I used to be able to open a pattern, choose the size to my measurements from the pattern provided, lay it out, cut and sew. No sew anymore. Thank you for all the tips for copying the pattern. I am enjoying your videos...thank you for the detail you provide.
I work at my family's medical supply store in the San Francisco area, and we sell rolls of the sort of paper you sit or lie down on when you go to the doctor. It's called exam table paper, and we sell it in two widths-18" and 21". Both sizes come in 225-foot rolls and we sell them for $8 per roll. I use the 21" for tracing patterns, and when I've got the pattern how I want it, I take the exam table paper version and trace it onto brown packaging paper. The pieces of each pattern can then be rolled up and placed inside a mailing tube or something similar. Just label it on the outside of the tube!
Wow! I thought I already knew how to use a pattern....I was wrong!! This was great, I learned so much, again. Thank you Aneka, I'm so happy I found your channel.
I can't tell you how grateful I am to you for sharing your knowledge! I'm self taught and am finally taking my sewing to the next level because of your tutorials. I really want to learn how to draft my own patterns and would appreciate any advice. Thank you so much! Cheers 😁
Omg, i came across your channel and I literally binged watched your videos and it has thought me so much. Your teachings are so clear and understanding.. thank you so much for all your teachings; Really appreciate your channel & you.. your AWESOME!!!!!
Super helpful. I could sew but wanted to improve and started trying to make copies of patterns and make some drafts for sewing my own underwear. All to avoid shopping. I started using Pellon and because I had to use a pattern in a book, I just ordered a vintage super foldable cardboard cutting board which has a grid on it so I can enlarge the pattern if I can't get to a copy machine. I liked your advice on coloring/colouring your size lines on the pattern and penciling the curves if you are not able to with the French curve.
Glad I was able to help with a few things. Those vintage cardboard cutting boards are great; I still have my grandmothers. A great investment. Wishing you all the best with your sewing and patterns. Aneka x
Hello from Los Angeles, CA. I found you last week on You Tube and have been watching you ever since. I love your step by step instructions. You are very organized and make professional videos. Thank you! I greatly appreciate all you videos! You are awesome!
Wow, what a lovely comment. Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a lovely message. Really pleased you like my videos and teaching. Huge thanks, Aneka x
Wow, Aneka! Thank you for your very prompt reply. And thank you for the edit. That's very sweet to go to all that trouble. I really intended you to think about it and maybe reconsider more demonstrations in future tutorials. I think your a great instructor and have learned a lot from you. Thanks again for taking my suggestion seriously.
Hi Patty, it's not a problem at all. I actually added the edit into the front of my next video 'how to pattern match fabric', as it made sense to show the process again there. I hope that is ok? It will be up Sunday or next Wednesday (as my Introduction to Pattern Matching will be launched today). I really appreciate your feedback, I want to make videos that teach, help and inspire my subscribers - so feedback is important to make sure I get this right! Aneka :-))
I find it easier to put the original pattern on top and with tracing paper and a blunt tracing wheel trace onto the bottom pattern paper. Thanks for a great video. 👍🏻
A costume designer uses 3.5 to 4.0 mil see thru plastic used in construction. Came in rolls. He copied with a thin Sharpie. Looked a useful idea and a sturdy choice.
After seeing these videos on tracing your pattern pieces. I ordered a see-through transparent roll of paper from. Amazon, 36 inches wide by about 20 some yards long (it could be longer). One of the reviews criticized this paper saying it was uneven in tone, but as long as you can see through it, hopefully, it will work for grading pattern pieces to blend various body dimensions into a pleasing workable final pattern that is more of a custom fit than the averaged out one size fits all in the size range you need.
I use lunch wrap paper and when it is not wide enough I sew 2 pieces together with a 3/8 inch seam which I fold flat. I find this better that taping. Grease proof paper is good too and usually has one side that takes the pencil better than the other. Silicon coated backing paper is less good. Thanks for the video.
John Dekker Hi John, what a great idea to sew the pieces of paper together. Thank you SO much for sharing your tips with others! Greatly appreciated. Aneka
VERY interesting and informative, THANK YOU 🌻Yes pls Aneka do give us some info on the thick tracing paper u showed ,maybe even how to obtain online ,when possible of course .😊
I am about to pop over to the show to find out the weight and then I will try and find a suitable online source to recommend. Will let you know asap. Aneka
I'm from Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 and your teaching style is fabulous. As a beginner I have learnt many important practices and this is brand new experience for me. Can u kindly advise on how to download patterns. I have visited your website but I couldn't find the method
Thank you for your lovely kind words. I am working to get the patterns finished and then they will be downloadable. Everything got delayed because I wanted to launch fuller figure sizes at the same time as normal sizes. Aria and Paxton are coming very soon. Aneka x
Another great video thank you. I've only just got into sewing after learning at school which was a long time ago. I have recently inherited a huge amount of material with some on the roll which I would love to use. Only problem is I just don't understand how to use patterns or what all the symbols etc mean or even have any idea what would be best to start off making.
Hi Beth, so pleased you like it. I would start with a simple pattern such as a skirt? Or maybe even my free pattern - Copen dress or top because then you can follow along with the video and I explain things as we go: ruclips.net/video/ASKmwy7xklk/видео.html Or here is a skirt one I have made: ruclips.net/video/LSxqYMqnBB8/видео.html I do hope they help? Good luck, Aneka x
Enita, I know that you are a wonderful sewer! I've searched & searched on RUclips, and there are almost no videos showing us how to fashion old fashion (Betty White type) Sweatpants anywhere! Remember the kind that where somewhat stretchy, but not baggy at the crotch? Sweats are the perfect thing to pull on when getting the kids off to school, or having to go outside to shovel snow. Would you show us how? Thank you!
Hi David, yes you will want to copy marks onto the fabric. This is usually notches, as well as any circles or marks that indicate details. I hope this helps? Aneka
Hi Deborah, I actually just picked this up from my local craft store (A0 sheets) as I only tend to use it when I am pattern matching. I don't have it on rolls like the other paper I use. Bear with me and I will call the shop tomorrow to find out the paper weight so I can find a similar online option. Aneka x
I believe she is using vellum paper. I bought a roll of it off of amazon for a good price. It's thick but still translucent enough to see your pattern underneath. The brand I use is Pro Art vellum roll 36 inches x 5 yards. Hope this helps! ✂️💞
I love your tutorials. Two things, where can I purchase that paper you're using? And can you do a tutorials showing how to use the French Curve when making alterations. In particular, how the numbers on the ruler correlate when altering? Thank you.
Hi Michelle, do you mean the thick tracing paper? I purchased this in A1 or A0 sheets from my local craft store. Do you have somewhere that you could try? I will find out the weight of the paper and get back to you. Of course I can show how to use the French Curve, the numbers only really help when you are measuring curves, or I use them to make sure that two curves are symmetrical. For example for a curved (bowed) dart I would remember that I used the shape of the curve from 5" to 8" and then use the same shape on the other side. I will do a video, thank you for the suggestion. Aneka x
Hi Billie! Thank you, really pleased you like the video. Sorry that you feel that way, I try to keep my videos as professional as possible. I want to make sure that people get what they need from the video, and have learned what they watched the video for. Aneka x

Hello Inas, yes you can cut the lining with princess seams and the main bodice in the embroidery fabric (it sounds lovely) without princess seams. You will need to make a pattern for the front bodice. Or work to position the princess seams back together, so that you can cut the bodice in the exterior fabric as a single piece. Does that make sense? Aneka
