This was something I struggled with when fixing my moms scrub cadet. Bought the wrong alternator, returned for the right one AND bought a new starter without the correct about of teeth and absolutely destroyed the ring gear. Turns out that the ring gear didnt have a kit to replace it (some weird generation of vangard that the flywheel and ring gear are super rare) and found a used one in good shape. I spent a lot of money, but learned alot in the process.
I needed this video like 6 months ago! Anyways, great video! Keep it up!

This video was both entertaining AND informative- Didnt know youtube videos could do that!! haha Another great instalment from a hardworking mower shop and scammers at every turn!
Point that Taryl makes about that little diode is so critical unless you have deep wallets . A battery hold tons of amps and always wants to discharge to earth. In a car EVERY circuit has resistance to stop this. Even the starter motor has extremely low resistance to allow the battery to dump most of its amps at it as it can handle this flow.
The Mower has that little diode to allow the juice to only flow towards the battery and on a car the diodes are already inside the alternator doing the same job. If you find you battery totally dead- zero volts one morning, its possible that a diode has shorted or a circuit was left on like door open or lights.
When ever i have to work on a unknown engine, i always check the oil, water and wires in case someone has fooled with them so as to prevent what Taryl found; a ruined alt and possible overheated wires back to the ignition and all sorts of damage. In a mower, you can repair this easily, in a car with large hidden wire looms, really bad day ahead!! so check dont assume what others have done!

19:54 yeah, i had that too, had a customer waiting around for me to look at his crappy mower and wouldn't just leave it, he was in A BIG HURRY and had to have it TODAY. He started futzing around with it while I was finishing up another job. He got his handy dandy spark plugs and socket and pull the plug, left the wire dangling...(it wouldn't crank when it came in, see where this is going?) He cranks it, then I hear screams of FIRE! FIRE! it was full of fuel, and he sprayed fuel all over the ungrounded plug lead. Luckluy I keep several extinguishers around, if you look at my profile pic, I'm a 33year veteran firefighter. I got it put out quickly, and the guy looked glumly at his mower and said, " well, it's gonna cost more now, isn't it?" I said yep, this is why I asked you to leave it. He learned, and has been one of my best customers ever since. He drops his stuff off, and says call him when it's ready, no hurry. 😀

About 5 years ago I had about the same shit happen but it was too early in the morning 4 me to put out a fire. A local guy brings this ancient old Simplicity and just by getting near it you could tell the carb was the issue the entire machine stank like gas. I ask him to push it off the trailer he has it on and leave it. But oh no he doesn't do that. The trailer because of the height of his truck and the hitch he could have easily just left it roll backward off the trailer but no as it is drifting backwards he turns the key to start it and then it back fires spits flames a few feet long and the thing erupts into a fireball he jumps off the mower rolls down the driveway then gets up starts dancing around my driveway hopping on one foot with both pants cuffs on fire he tries to put out his pants cuffs whips off his sneakers... Needless to say he drove home in a pair of my pants.... I called him about 3 month later after I got the new hood and wiring harness 4 it and asked him to come pick up. I said next time you decide to have a Bonfire in my driveway bring a bag of marshmellows.. He laughed like hell a long time on the phone until I told how much the bill was... I told him he was lucky he didn't catch one of my trucks on fire he wouldn't be able to afford that bill.. I definitely not a firefighter... It's lucky the whole mower didn't go up but because the carb was leaking there wasn't that much gas in it. What was in it was scary enough.

That "how much is the new one, and I told him the price..." bit cracked me up! Taryl looked like he was reliving that moment in his head.

my grandpa still owns an auto brake shop and about 10 years ago he had got done doing a water pump on a buick lesabre and started it went to wash his hands and piss and forgot about it(very very quiet engines so its not hard) and started writing up the bill and the bay doors were shut because it was winter. well my mom got a call and it was my grandpa, he said a mumble and she heard the phone drop and THANK GOD his shop was less than 2 minutes from my mom and dads house because she flew over there in her car and picked him up off the ground. carbon monoxide took over that little 3 bay shop very quick and that was after almost 40 years of working on engines a HUGE wake up call to ALWAYS make sure you have good ventilation when working on gas engines. stay safe guys ✌

Hi Taryl! Love this video. I was just watching it for knowledge and entertainment, but it turns out that you covered something I needed to know. That is the spring on the cam that releases the compression in the valves to have the engine turn over faster. Now I was told that the spring sometimes breaks, but you said to set the valves, so imma try that first 🙂 Thanks Taryl! 😊

People are really hard on these little engines and then call themselves fixing them in less then a minute WITHOUT evaluating what they did at all, then they really have to pay"the price".
I bet that repair was about $300.00 or more because they bypassed that diode, causing the alternator to fry like it did.$$$$$$$$

Great information Taryl! It sure is annoying when you get a machine in to replace one thing and about 10 other things show up. Kind of like rebuilding a bathroom, you plan on spending $2000.00 and it ends up costing $5000.00. That had to be a hefty bill on that mower, you definitely made it lots better than it came into your shop!I always learn something watching your videos and I have been working on and fixing mowers since I was a kid in my Dad's lawnmower repair shop, that is over 50 years ago!

OMG your comments sound so much like what I say to people who say they fixed it but it don't work now! HAHAHAHA! On a serious note, your instruction about valve setting for compression release was a revelation. I've been running a Scotts 25 horse mower for over 7 years now. Great mower but a hard starter. Recently decided to do a "refresh" with new gaskets to address the governor seal leak. Sure enough, the valves were almost three times the required setting! Thanks again for sharing the wisdom!

I learned some things that I hadn't thought of to look for like the alternator wire routing. And Why does the engine die if the alternator has low output. I thought it was a spark thing.
