Thanks to this video I pulled out my 1973 sears rototiller, just like the one featured, and put in a new electronic coil, new carb and fuel lines, changed the fluids and after 20 years of sitting ...it runs like a swiss watch. Smooth. Thanks Taryl for your wisdom (That is your smarts)

Taryl's small engine & machine videos are quite excellent. He does a great job of explaining what the problems with the machine are..how to fix those problems and what parts & tools you'll need. The video quality and detail he shows you is tops. This is your small engine "go to" guy in my opinion. I've learned things about equipment from this guy I dont even own...but if I did I know now who the first guy is who will have the answers to point me in the right direction. The tiller in this video was definitely worth a 6-pack of 🍺 beer and I don't even 🍸 drink,I would have bought the guy a 12 pack of beer and told him to"keep the change".HAHA!!.
That tiller will last almost forever the way its built(like a tank)and most of the time your only going to use it twice a year for brief periods of time anyway(spring planting/fall harvest),unlike your lawn mower.
I was noticing after you were using the"Z"bender Tayrl,you didn't"temper"that end of the throttle cable.Alot of mfg.'s"temper"both ends of the cable because that's a wear-and-tear stress point.(No big deal,it was just an observation)
Back in 1974 lawn/garden equipment was made alot better in general,thicker and better steel,NO PLASTIC,alot more machined steel gears,more cast iron in the engines too.
AND THERES YOUR DINNER!!.

Taryl, we love watching your videos. My husband had one of these tillers, from brand new. Used it up till 10 yrs ago. The lower unit developed a hole. But a wonderful tiller. He really enjoyed watching you fix it.
You are the best small engine repairman ever. I grew up on the farm in the 50s and know how to fix things so I respect you because what you do makes perfect sense.
So I watch these types of videos religiously. Small engine, atv, auto shop, etc. I usually fall asleep to whatever is playing on RUclips (I rarely watch cable or Netflix anymore). Yesterday I wake up at 5 am pretty groggy, barely awake, and glance at the tv with eyes still crusty from sleep and I see this guy fixing engines and I cannot recognize his voice. The camera pans up and I see this crazy guy with Austin powers teeth and I stare for a few seconds thinking is this real or satire? I fall back asleep I guess and when I wake up I assumed it was a dream. A few hours later I come upstairs from working on an atv and RUclips is playing for my dogs (drowns out air compressor noises). Guess who’s face I see !? Needless to say I sit down and watch the video and holy crap he’s not only funny but super knowledgeable. I love the combination of humor and teaching. Great concept. I’ve been binge watching for the last two days. Not only are you recording everything you’re doing but you’re also talking through each step. Very awesome for someone who needs help with any of these machines.

I bet Taryl could set the rpm by sound. It’s great to see people pass on how we fixed equipment back in the day. Don’t need special tools for everything. I would rather find an old tiller than some of this new stuff they have. My dad had an old 70 something tiller and that thing would tear through the dirt with ease and have good gardening soil in no time. That’s for the video and glad I found your channel.

Taryl, I have learned that you are the ' go to guy ' to learn about small engine repairs. I think this video is one of the best . I am one those guys that love older anything. I am a firm believer that the older engines, and accessories were made to last longer than the new stuff. I look every day for older equipment and tools being sold.. I don't need any of it, but I love to own it and work on it ! Again, thank you for sharing your knowledge and talent ... PS : including the parts replacement number is a HUGE help too !
This man is already taking Hollywood by storm, chosen by vanity fair as the sexiest man mechanic alive, , ladies once you lay your eyes on his drive train, nothing else matters, and trust me he has the horsepower to backup that drive train. ALL JOKING ASIDE WHEN I NEED HELP ON A MECHANICAL ISSUE THIS IS THE MAN TO SEE, he makes every task seem so much easier than i view it as. He is a walking library of knowledge, if i had to choose one only one man on a mission to mars for a year it would be none other than this man. And Taryl i mean that with the deepest respect, i have learned more from watching your videos than from any other source, hell you have probably forgotten more than most of us will ever know, and you are always right , and by the way we named our last child after you as a tribute to the greatness that you possess. Its very refreshing to see a guy that actually repairs equipment not just replaces parts. Rock on mate.
I enjoy the Hillbilly back yard mechanic buck tooth guy who has been around small motors all his life and likes making old Briggs engines come back to life. We all started on those and they all are a lot of fun. Not much has changed on them except the electronic ignition they have came up with. I am glad you post these videos because they are very entertaining to us old farts who grew up putting these motors on mini bikes and go carts back in the 60s and rode the shit out of them all summer long. God those were the times hopping them up to where they would out run the neighbors most expensive mini bike when we just had a little cheep one.
Tayrl,I have my dads 1950 David Bradley(sold by Sears and Roebuck)it has NEVER had the engine taken apart,(1.5hp.Briggs/Stratton rope start)it STILL HAS the original spark plug in it and it STILL RUNS and it doesn't burn a drop of oil either...NO JOKE!!.
4 gauge I just restored a 1958 DB Roto-Spader w/2.75hp engine. Cool old machines. I’m hoping to get a DB Tractor to restore next.

I love how thorough taryl is ...I have done all the same stuff and he really does not miss a beat and he is entertaining..
I used to use carb cleaner as a starting fluid, but I switched over to using a spray bottle with some two cycle gas in it. It provides a bit of lube for the top end, especially on engines like this one that has been sitting for quite a while. And yes, carb cleaner in the eyes really burns! And if you happen to have the official small Briggs flywheel puller, it has the right hardware for pulling those float valve seats. You just have to provide your own spacer tube. Excellent video as always Taryl! That’s pretty much the same procedure I use when something like this back to life. My Dad used to always tell me, spark, fuel, and compression and it’ll run..

Hard as a carb! Best be changing that! You the man! I have about 40 of these engines ranging from 3.5hp to 10hp and I have been using all your tips and tricks to get them running like new again for future hotrod mini bike and go kart projects. I really liked the micro jet drill video you had. I bought a set for myself and it makes life easy when swapping carbs after intake and exhaust mods. Can really tune up these old engines. Keep the videos coming you were a better teacher then the ones in my university. Much appreciated and very entertaining.

I am very proud of the Dactal family for many reasons. First, you had an idea, and then you finished it. Second, you blabbed all the secrets of small engines. Third, you gave us the confidence to work on our own stuff. With your guidance, I took a 1977 chain case of a Yard Man tiller completely apart and fixed it with a 5/8" top shaft I had to get made. After I put the engine back on (135202) PulsaJet carbitrator---- It actually worked!!! I owe most of my gumption to you. I now collect a certain brand of metal toy that was extremely popular from Mound, Minn. --so Slippers does have SOME sense. Thank you for realizing your RUclips dream. Now RUclips can build a second story onto your shop!

A good additional step to your tank cleaning with vinegar and bolts at 21:20, I'd do that, but jack up the rear wheels of a rider, bungee strap the tank to the side of the wheel, start the mower, throw it in gear, and let it power clean the tank. Lol

Taryl I have a tiller that is around a 1958 or so put a 3.5 hp tecumish on it 30 yrs ago ,stolen from my younger brother off his mini bike lol , have a great holiday , ps just replaced the gear box seals this spring all is well ,from your friend Thom in the Motor City, Detroit Michigan, (retired auto mechanic of 50 yrs.) love your videos very educational.

Great stuff, Taryl. As you said, they don't make things like they used too. That 1972 Sears Rototiller is built like a tank! That is the year I hired into GM. 30 years and out and haven't looked back sense. Those days are long gone. I was given a 1966 Simplicity Landlord 101 by my neighbor about 24 years ago. It's all original. I did touch up some of the white paint, which was pretty rusty looking. New tires and fuel lines and a new carburetor. Oh yes, it needed new spark plug, points and condenser as well. It came with a 42 in mower deck and a dozer blade. A set of chains for the rear ties too. It still starts right up and runs quite well for an original engine. I have never done a compression test to see how much compression it has. I had to replace the axle seals, which were leaking. Like you said that old stuff is built extremely strong compared to today's equipment. I mainly use the Simplicity Landlord to move my utility trailer from the back storage building to where I can hook it up to my Yukon. Your videos are very entertaining as well very informative. If I need to work on any of my machines, I look to find one of your videos, which covers just about every subject.

Taryl, a BIG thanks going out ur way. I don't bother with cable t.v. I'd rather spend hrs on the interskreen watching you fix engines. seriously, I got back into this last year as gas on a lady
friends generator got left on. power went out for a day and she had no heat. I called her to say
"HI an how R ya. she told me she caught a bad cold. so I went and got her generator, pulled the'
carb apart, let it soak all night in carb cleaner, blew out all orifices with shop air and used a bit
of wire from 10 stranded and ran thru holes in jet. serviced air filter, gapped plug and got a new
magneto coil which some call an ignition module, so HI-TEK! Got ther running good and adjusted
the governor, It works great for her now. I service it for her free cuz she's a sweet woman.
Anyway, like I sed tho, Thanks very much for these great vidz. I'd rather get an old engine to run
than to get a new one. Two thumbs up to U junior and Slipperz!
Absolutely loved this video....I had that same exact tiller given to me with a blown motor...have another motor I'm hoping to get up and going and put on there...love these old machines...most front tine tillers I let my scrapping buddy take unless they are easy to fix and can resell but ALL old machines I keep...I have 5 old Ariens rocket tillers and won't part with them for anything....best they ever made!!!
