  • Its country out here in Puna Hawaii. You have to be tough and you should be able to out run lava if you want to live in Puna. After all we are living on a volcano. Kalapana Gardens is a subdivision built on a fresh lava flow.

    I saw this area back in the mid-90's. There wasn't much of a road back then and only a couple of crazy residents that had to use dirt bikes to drive in. It's great to see that the road was put in and the hand-built homes are being built. The landscape reminds me of living in the desert. This must be the new "place of refuge" for the modern day.

That garden is now a moonscape as you well described on your tour. Dude, you are the coolest/calmest person. This is my favorite volcanic area of study. The number of brave and hearty souls, who have returned to the destroyed Kalapana Gardens, and once again thrown caution to the wind is a huge plus, continues to grow. They exemplify the true "Pioneering Spirit" here, and never seem to give up. in spite of Madam Pele.

      What happened to all those people who lost everything?
      I understand they do not own their lots anymore. Loosing everything you own... Hard to imagine how it may effect their lives. They must know something about something. Continentaler’s mind would probably be off the track and commit suicide, since main “program” has been broken.

    The steam you drive through on 130 is fine. I live next to those plates and those cracks run through our yard and under my hale. She burps out fumes with all the steam but they have monitored and still monitor those cracks for so2 and it's nothing to trip about, you're more often than not smelling lots of hot earth and lava rock mixed with plenty steam. That said, I'm so used to it that I don't roll up my windows driving through and had an asthmatic buddy with me and it messed him up so I'm not saying it doesn't deserve caution and respect, just that it is MOSTLY steam.
    I put up a clip of me mowing our section of the cracks if you wanna see something fairly surreal it's on my channel. Aloha 🤙 Imua Puna

    They must have some really lacks zoning codes there. In most states you can't get a building permit in a 100yr flood zone or build even a 15' x 15' chicken shed within 50' or more of intermittent seasonal creek even if it hasn't flowed in 40yrs. Forgive Mr if I don't shed a lot of tears the next time the lava flows, especially if Federal monies (yours and mine) are used to bale em out. Hater's, I'm just saying

    was there a guy who lived here alone on the lava? I saw a program years ago about a guy whos house was out on lava and he had to walk to a long way to get to his house across lava. It's been decades since I been down to Kalapana. Great video you have here. Some questions:
    1. After people's properties got covered by lava in the 1990s, did they retain ownership of that property or was it surrendered, sold or auctioned off?
    2. Aren't some of the same people who lived here before the flows took their property able to resettle on the same parcel they owned?
    3. What will the status be for those many residents who lost their property in Leilani, Vacationland, etc this year? Do they still retain the property and be able to build on it someday in the future?
    This area would be good if the state would allow those large RV homes to be used. Lava flow comes... just drive your home away. Surely an RV is not like a real home, but it is an option that should be considered.

      Someone in another video said that people retain ownership.
      However, I’m wondering if there are foreclosures if loans are not paid. If your only home is covered, I doubt one could live elsewhere and pay their loan and new home.

    • @AsianNIGMA
      @AsianNIGMA 5 лет назад

      The Hawaii Files Channel if it’s covered by lava you lose your property to the state, you can’t even get a insurance claim unless you prove your house caught fire prior to the lava

    • @hawaiifiles
      @hawaiifiles 5 лет назад +1

      So the 700+ homes that got covered by lava this year, all the people lost their rights to their property??? I find that to be very un-American. There have also been farmers who lost ag land. There has to be some kind of justice for the home/landowners. I can understand the part of insurance not covering but ownership of the land itself is different I think. I guess someone needs to do some research into the law on this. Plus how did the people in this video get these properties? Did they own them previous to those lava flows or did they buy them afterward?

    Aloha Gabe. I grew up in Hawaiian acres but my grandparents left me 2 lots in Kalapana. I am going back this January. I have a couple of questions if you dont mind. When I look at the map it shows some of the roads have been established but some of the roads are not in. My property is on a road that is not cut in. Is it my responsibility to pay a dozer to cut in a public road? Or I just drive the easiest path to my property even if I cross other peoples undeveloped land? Do you know if the lots have been resurveyed or is each owner responsible for that? Thank you so much.

    @Gabe : How long after a lava event before plant life is completely back to normal. Thirty years is obviously not enough.

      Depends on lava type. Ohia trees repopulate a-a lava in a few decades. Folks also drive dozers across a-a flows break and smooth it down. All the lava here is pahoihoi --much more solid

      @ Thanks Hugh : Is 120 years a good guess for pahoihoi-lava ? Or will it take longer ?

      weeds in a few years
      big trees 30+ years
      jungle 100+ years
      depends how far the seeds have to travel and if lava just keeps flowing

      Also significantly depends on rainfall rate. The Big Island (nearly 14,000 feet tall) significantly interrupts the Trade Winds. As they get pushed up the slopes to cooler altitudes, their moisture precipitates as rainfall. Up by Hilo, and farther north, that coast gets huge amount of rain. That area has dozens of waterfalls pouring over the cliffs into the sea. The Tradewinds-sheltered lee side (Kona side) gets relatively, very little rain --and is almost a desert (prickly pear cactus thrive there). Back to the South rift zone and its lava, the Puna coast kinda runs from northeast to southwest. And the local rainfall rate is high in the northeast and evenly diminishes the farther southwest one goes. Kalpana is much drier than the newly lava-engulfed area up by (former) Kapoho. And that, of course, affects the botanical regeneration rate

    So every time the lava comes the land is sold to new buyers?

    • @gabehumphries5483
      @gabehumphries5483  5 лет назад

      LOL no
      if you own land that gets covered in 50' of lava well your land is now 50' higher

    • @kansasthunderman1

      The owners still have legal title to property that's covered with lava. In fact, someone is now the proud owner of a new volcano at Fissure 8.

    so if people lived there before, do the land rights go away just because of a lava flow? don't they still own that geographic location?

    • @gabehumphries5483
      @gabehumphries5483  5 лет назад +2

      no you still own the land even if it gets covered by lava

    So, what happened to the property rights of the original residents? Are they the ones selling the land now? Or is their property deemed to be 'gone' and the land is being re-sold by the county/whoever?

    • @kansasthunderman1
      @kansasthunderman1 5 лет назад

      The owners still have legal title to the land covered by lava. However, it's a good idea to have the GPS coordinates of your property line just in case another lava flow comes along.

    Thanks for the look around, there is a landscape ready for restoration and it looks like some people have started. Casuarinas (iron-woods) are a good pioneer plant as they are nitrogen fixers, any quick growing legume would be worth a try, too. My garden started, 30 yrs ago, on a block of cereal cropping land that had been cleared for about a century, it is now a productive woodland (see facebook.com/ecological.sustainability/ for pictures and ideas) cheers

      FEMA money, taxes I pay. I don't know why government is allowing houses to be rebuilt on lava flows. They will get taken out again.
