I like that this scene's score isn't really suspenseful or tense. It's very hopeful and uplifting and lets you know that everything is going to be okay.
Talk for you, I was worried the man look through the mirror and spot little Jack. I was VERY tense and scared at the moment, begging he didn’t get hurt or killed.
nagham kakoz yes but the difference is he's actually seeing it and taking it all in for the very first time. Was a bit worried seeing the outside world would be too much for his mental stimuli though, hence his initial reaction. Powerful scene.
Ehhh he’s still a sociopath. They’re often affable because they want to project the image that they’re just flawed and a victim of society or lull people into a false sense of security. A person with empathy wouldn’t be able to do the things Nick did. Notice how he’s detached from Jack? Even though he’s his son, he doesn’t show any real concern about his health nor the fact that he’s “dead”. The only reason he didn’t bury Jack in the yard is because it would be too noticeable and it would be more pragmatic to bury him elsewhere. Plus what if he discovered Jack wasn’t really dead. He’d need to kill him, and there’s witnesses in the neighborhood.
In the book, Ma miscarries a baby before Jack and it's buried in the back yard. Makes it much more intense in the book! (not a huge spoiler, it doesn't happen during the book but before Jack was born)
It's such a metaphor for being born/re-born, and IMMENSE courage at accepting the world and dealing with it successfully despite a complete lack of experience... VERY Powerful stuff...
So incredible that if Old Nick had not had that one shred of empathy, had he decided to just bury Jack in his yard, he might have gotten away with it. It was this one mistake that was his end, and Ma & Jack’s beginning.
Genie Hossain the conversation isn't shown, but Ma refuses to let him bury Jack in his back yard. She does that because she knows Old Nick will have no choice but to take him out. It was actually a great escape plan
#1 Dad He didn't have to listen to her. She wasn't there, she wouldn't have known if he had buried Jack in the garden or not. In this situation she would have known, Old Nick would have noticed that Jack was alive and would have punished them or something but if Jack had really been dead Ma wouldn't have known if Old Nick listened to her or not.
I do like how Old Nick isn’t completely heartless. This could be a sign this is a metaphor movie. See, he and Joy (Ma) have normal conversations sometimes despite the situation showing she’s used to it that much, there’s never any sign he wants to do anything bad to Jack and even shows that he simply wants to see his son and like in the clip even pauses in shock realizing his son is dead (not knowing it’s a trick).
CULLTHEHERD nope at one point he tried to touch jack and Ma freaked out and he nearly suffocated her and said “don’t forget where you got him from” implying that he could’ve just as easily killed jack
This scene had my on the edge of my seat, crying. One of the most genuinely moving scenes I've experienced, and the same can be said for the following scene.
The Godfather, Jaws, blade runner, stand by me, Forrest Gump, fight club, children of men, no country for old men, the silence of the lambs, Die Hard, The Mist, misery, Psycho, drive, the thing, the devil wears Prada, breakfast at Tiffany’s, Apocalypse Now, and pretty much anything directed Stanley Kubrick (such as a clockwork orange, Dr. Strangelove, the shining). That’s just a shortlist off the top of my head.
I cried and cried at Jack’s first glimpse of the World. And then he remembers he has to save Ma. Climb out of that truck, when he’s so overwhelmed, and somehow follow her voice in his head-and he does it. Cried even harder.
I love that she trained him with key words that he could remember. Jump, Wiggle Out, Stop, Somebody. Whatever order it was that’s gotta be intense for a five year old who is looking at the world like WE would if we saw Mars for the first time
Jacob has the most incredible eyes I have ever seen. He can make you feel anything with just his eyes. It's as if he has access to every emotion- the entire human experience- and can convey any part of it through his facial expressions and especially the look in his eyes. You cannot teach this. It's why he already was so incredible an actor at ages 7-8 while filming this. The more I see him work, the more I feel it's an injustice to just compare him to other child actors. He's easily the best ever in that group. Over the next few decades, the question will be answered as to whether he's the greatest screen actor we've ever seen. I think he may be.
I keep rewatching this scene it’s so amazing the score, how it’s shot from jack’s perspective, and how quickly it changes from whimsical and wonderful to a fast paced horror movie.
This scene made me cry like a baby. The fact that all these little things we take for granted. This boy has never seen anything than what was beyond those 4 walls. These scene just really got to me because it's so real and so well done. Just honestly a beautiful yet melancholy part of of the movie.
This scene brought tears to my eyes. There aren’t many things that make me cry. But this, this made a grown man cry. Why? Cause we often take for granted how big and perfect the world is. And him seeing the sky for the first time. Made me remember that I’m just a little piece in a big universe.
the hard cut to the shot of the shed from above is so powerful. Jack thought Room was the full extent of the world and then turns out it’s just a tiny shed in a backyard in a city with hundreds of thousands of other yards on a planet where 7 billion other people live.
What a direction . The director just didn't let old nick run to his truck instantly. he made him stop and let him do some self introspection about how much suffering he has given to her. Old nick now was attached to the mother and child And was thinking that how can he end it without facing the consequences.
I agree with you. It humanized him a bit even though he’s arrested in the end. This makes me think this movie is a metaphor for divorce. See The family roles in the movie are the same but the room is symbolic of how the parents feel in their environment. Eventually they divorce and the mother wins the son and takes him to a new environment like they’re moving houses. The rest of the movie is about them adapting to this new situation. The mother is relived but the son wishes things were back to how they were. Jake wanted to stay in ROOM representing how a child doesn’t wanna leave his home the first time.
I think he was contemplating on burying him in the backyard but he had one little shred of empathy in him to give the mother her wish which led to his downfall. Incredible scene.
I agree with the comment above. I think he was really just contemplating burying the child in the backyard since Joy wouldn’t know whether he did or not, then he did feel bad and decided to keep his promise
One of the best scenes in recent memory. Incredible choice of music and the acting from this mere child is incredible, to capture the nuances they needed from him. Absolutely incredible film, although it is bleak and depressing as hell, it remains for me one of the most powerful films Ive ever seen and Ill never forget it. Masterclass in filmmaking.
This scene is also depressing as it was inspired on the real life scene of 5 year old Felix Fritzl (youngest child of Elisabeth Fritzl) who was so mesmerized at the outside world that his nose was pressing against the window of the police car throughout the ride (the scene was stated by the police who got him from that basement).
That part where he’s taking quick, shuttering breaths and trying not to vomit.... it’s because he’s never experienced such thrill in his lifetime. This is the first time he feels wind, and cold air, and is moving as fast as he is. It’s overwhelming.
I love when the dog immediately knows that something’s wrong even before Old Nick grabs Jack and the owner catches on not long after. Thank goodness for people like that man and his dog 💕
I am so happy i didn't watch any of the trailers for this movie, my heart was pounding hard in this scene. it's a shame the trailer shows the whole fucking movie and a lot of people watched it.
The music is by the band This Will Destroy You and they make really ambient atmospheric post rock music. Highly recommend! This is their song "The Mighty Rio Grande"
In the book, it is explained that Joy had another child before, but it was stillborn or something. He buried the baby outside of the shed... So him looking at the yard before ultimately putting Jack in the truck is him recognizing something that has happened before. They don't include that in the movie.
I like that this scene's score isn't really suspenseful or tense. It's very hopeful and uplifting and lets you know that everything is going to be okay.
Kind of takes the tension away though.
But still a good scene.
Alan Guillermo not really I thought it was ok for him but his mom was going to die
Alan Guillermo absolutely. The score makes the scene!
Talk for you, I was worried the man look through the mirror and spot little Jack. I was VERY tense and scared at the moment, begging he didn’t get hurt or killed.
It's similar to what might be used when astronauts are rocketing out of orbit... Leaving the world into the great unknown
One of the greatest scenes I have ever seen in my life. No words, just Jack's reaction to the world around him.
i had a date and went to see this movie. I nearly cried lol in this scene cause i know This will destroy you for years. best movie 2015
haha. The music always gets me.
And the trailer gives it away.
It’s one of the best scenes in the history of movies. Phenomenal
My heart the first time I saw this scene
The look on his face when he sees the sky for the first time!
Kitty Grimm
He has seen the sky before from his skylight
nagham kakoz yes but the difference is he's actually seeing it and taking it all in for the very first time. Was a bit worried seeing the outside world would be too much for his mental stimuli though, hence his initial reaction. Powerful scene.
Kitty Grimm Agreed
Kitty Grimm it’s a girl
It's a boy
Scary to think he almost buried him in the backyard, but one ounce of heart he had left decided not to
Chewy shits heavy
and got him caught lol
Ehhh he’s still a sociopath. They’re often affable because they want to project the image that they’re just flawed and a victim of society or lull people into a false sense of security. the reason he didn’t bury him in the backyard WASNT because he still had a heart but because he didn’t wanna get caught with a body in his yard
It's such a metaphor for being born/re-born, and IMMENSE courage at accepting the world and dealing with it successfully despite a complete lack of experience...
VERY Powerful stuff...
This.
Why do y'all have to make everything metaphorical 😂
This is the same music for Moneyball
@@themilfyway because everything is. Filmmakers are so intellingent
RIIIIIIIGHT! I didn’t think of it like that.
So incredible that if Old Nick had not had that one shred of empathy, had he decided to just bury Jack in his yard, he might have gotten away with it. It was this one mistake that was his end, and Ma & Jack’s beginning.

Miss Mirthe Old Nick is a monster
I do like how Old Nick isn’t completely heartless. This could be a sign this is a metaphor movie. See, he and Joy (Ma) have normal conversations sometimes despite the situation showing she’s used to it that much, there’s never any sign he wants to do anything bad to Jack and even shows that he simply wants to see his son and like in the clip even pauses in shock realizing his son is dead (not knowing it’s a trick).

I literally couldn't stop crying. Just imagine how he must have been feeling.
You don't have to imagine. It's all in Jacob's eyes for you to see. And that is the power of his extraordinary talent.
This scene is everything. Jack‘s reaction to the world is so beautiful and amazing. Our world is amazing.
This scene had my on the edge of my seat, crying. One of the most genuinely moving scenes I've experienced, and the same can be said for the following scene.
M. Gustave H. Keyword: genuine
there are very very few examples when the film is better than the book
this is one of them my friends
I'd add Shawshank Redemption and Contact to that list. Oh, and The Ring -- the book that movie is based on is hot garbage.
Cierra the film was merely the improved version of the book by the author. let's not forget she wrote both the book n the screenplay
Stuart Little, Beauty and the Beast, Carrie.
The Giver. (This is a joke, the giver movie was garbage)
I cried and cried at Jack’s first glimpse of the World. And then he remembers he has to save Ma. Climb out of that truck, when he’s so overwhelmed, and somehow follow her voice in his head-and he does it. Cried even harder.
This scene had me on edge thinking "Come on Jake! You can do it! Jump!"
Ashlee Johnson me too i was freaking the f out the whole time
Hailee same
Ashlee Johnson your killing me because you said Jake bruuuuuuhhhhh it’s jack
Jake? Really? Lmao. It's Jack 🤦🏽♀️
Stephanie Ann Jake is his real name
imagine breathing fresh air for the first time..
My heart breaks into so many pieces when Jake sees the sky for the first time.
He's such a good actor
same
I love that she trained him with key words that he could remember. Jump, Wiggle Out, Stop, Somebody. Whatever order it was that’s gotta be intense for a five year old who is looking at the world like WE would if we saw Mars for the first time
Those eyes get me every time

I'm not sure there is any character in a film who had so little screen time, who I despised as much as old man nick.
at the end i was like JUMP JUMP JUMP JUMP
When he got out of the rug, it was like he was born again!
This scene will destroy you.
Jonathan Michael great reference to the band
It MADE me!
Jonathan Michael nice
The scene is so cathartic after watching the whole movie that you’re screaming “JUMP! JUMP! RUN!” at the screen the whole time. Pretty powerful stuff.
This scene alone demonstrated why Jacob Tremblay deserved a Best Actor nomination. Powerful beyond belief.
The acting and casting on this film was superb
This movie is an absolute masterpiece
I agree. My first time watching today and I cried like a baby.
The whole movie is so 😢 i cried
I think of this scene sometimes and i remember the first time i watched it by myself.. i cried so much. One of the most powerful scenes i’ve seen
This scene brought tears to my eyes. There aren’t many things that make me cry. But this, this made a grown man cry. Why? Cause we often take for granted how big and perfect the world is. And him seeing the sky for the first time. Made me remember that I’m just a little piece in a big universe.
Big yeah, perfect hell naw :)). But yeah, emotional stuff indeed
the hard cut to the shot of the shed from above is so powerful. Jack thought Room was the full extent of the world and then turns out it’s just a tiny shed in a backyard in a city with hundreds of thousands of other yards on a planet where 7 billion other people live.
This scene just fascinates me and makes me imagine how seeing the world for the first time would actually feel like
Just finished watching this movie and i was fucking balling at his reaction to seeing the real world
I get the chills more from this scene than any other scene in any other movie ever. Absolutely flawless
What a direction . The director just didn't let old nick run to his truck instantly. he made him stop and let him do some self introspection about how much suffering he has given to her. Larry Abrahamson ?
This scene makes me cry Every time! The music, the way he opened his eyes when he saw the sky, when he jumped and started screaming. Omg.
That's the movie that introduced me to This Will Destroy You. I'll forever be thankful. What a nice film.
One of the best scenes in recent memory. Incredible choice of music and the acting from this mere child is incredible, to capture the nuances they needed from him. everyone when they were watching this: “ WHAT ARE YOU DOING OMG GET DOWN HES GOING TO SEE YOU”
Such a beautiful movie
This movie shows so much emotion, it is in my opinion an amazing movie
I cried like a lil bitch.
me too man, me too :(
Now this is licensing of your band's music at its finest. 👌 Well done TWDY. 👍
Be proud.
I remember screaming “JACK RUN” watching this for the first time
That part where he’s taking quick, shuttering breaths and trying not to vomit.... it’s because he’s never experienced such thrill in his lifetime. This is the first time he feels wind, and cold air, and is moving as fast as he is. It’s overwhelming.
This makes me want to cry.
That scene brings tears to my eyes.
They chose the right music for this. This Will Destroy You is a very good band.
The song is “The Mighty Rio Grande” by This Will Destroy You. Excellent choice for this scene
Oh my goodness. Thank you so so much. I’ve been searching everywhere for the title. Thank you!
I was at the edge of my seat yelling at him to run 😂😂
this had me on the edge of my seat omg
Incredibly powerful scene! Most memorable scene I've seen in a long time..
This scene made me so anxious 😭😭😭😭
How did this kid not get at least nominated for an Oscar?
Never been more on the edge of my seat then this scene
Wish you'd included the part where he actually escapes (jumps out). What's there is still great though; thank you.
I love when the dog immediately knows that something’s wrong even before Old Nick grabs Jack and the owner catches on not long after. Thank goodness for people like that man and his dog 💕
The music really makes the scene!
My eyes are sweating :c This was so beautiful
This movie turned my whole aspect on life I love this movie so much
amazing scene! beautiful post-rock! Jack for president!
I can’t express how i fell when I whatched that scene
Thats a mama's boy❤
This scene has me fucken shook! I had never been so anxious watching a movie before
This is the place everyone feel same Ariana.. It's to rare that a movie scene affect that much.
It's like Jack was re-born.
A cinematic masterpiece
I like how Old Nick’s truck is the exact same as the toy he got for Jack. (The one Jack eventually dismembered)
What a brave, strong child.
Yo this scene had me tense asf 😭
I am still stunned and disappointed at the fact that Jacob Tremblay did not receive an Oscar for this scene alone.
This scene has the impact of a scene in a science fiction movie where a person is being launched into deep inter dimensional space lol.
I have a heart of stone... and I was on the edge of my seat.
This part right here I had a mini panic attack
this scene made me cry watching it when it first came out , I just got the book this month . I enjoy it so much
Is it just me or am I the only one that wonders what was going on through Old Nick's mind when he was driving before he found out it was a trick
Pretty intense, on-the-edge-of-your-seat stuff!
Wtf is wrong with the comments that praise nick and try to see that he is heartless that monster is the worst shit ever
I literally watched this last night, and then the next morning, I heard the exact same score for a Jeep Cherokee commercial
Love the music! Very hopeful ☺️
The Mighty Rio Grande was used in Moneyball too. Great song.
My heart was racing It’s worse than watching a horror movie
I cried so hard when I saw this scene I still cry when I see it such a brave soul😭😭🙏🙏😇😇
This scene’s music made me remember about my past life and how I left my old friends
Pack your bags, Jackie boy; we're going on a feels trip
😂
I know it’s not in the video. But I like how the dog was aggressive to Old Nick as dogs can sense evil in people and was trying to protect Jack.
One of the most incredible movie scenes I have ever scene, every emotion running through me watching this
This scene is one long panic attack
I hope that Jacob Tremblay will be always handsome in the Next movies thanks his puberty playing Luca Paguro in the movie Luca 😍😍😍😍😍🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
This soundtrack is perfect
He was supposed to see the world at day 1.
He had to wait 5 years.
If you're reading this. I hope you don't know what that's like too.
It’s so emotional!!
This movie is really good
I am so happy i didn't watch any of the trailers for this movie, my heart was pounding hard in this scene.
it's a shame the trailer shows the whole fucking movie and a lot of people watched it.
The music is by the band This Will Destroy You and they make really ambient atmospheric post rock music. Highly recommend! This is their song "The Mighty Rio Grande"
Beautiful
now this is the time where they needed captain marvel
this scene gives me so much anxity tho
In the book, it is explained that Joy had another child before, but it was stillborn or something. He buried the baby outside of the shed... So him looking at the yard before ultimately putting Jack in the truck is him recognizing something that has happened before. They don't include that in the movie.
All the times she planned or got frustrated sent me into a panic attack.
I cried like a baby😭😭😭😭damn this was tough.
I always have to skip this part because I get so nervous even though I’ve seen it five times
Why
Watched it last night . 😵😓💔
I love the Wilhelm Scream at 2:24. You can just barely hear it, mixed in with the music.
?
