    Here in Indonesia where it's a very religious country, I'm sure movies like this will be underrated & slept by people. Few people will probably ever watch such daring & risky film, let alone to deeply understand the messages of the film. I truly admire the filmmaker for being courageous enough to make a bold, non cookie-cutter movie like this! Finally, a high-quality movie that can be discussed deeply & makes people think.

    • @ajrollo1437
      @ajrollo1437 6 months ago +5

      Religious films tend to get lost in the mix because they are either OVERTLY religious, and that's usually terrible; or they simply use religion as a frame for a story - a common cultural reference point. I actually saw a FANTASTIC horror film from an Iranian filmmaker (based in the UK because of a fatwah or something) that used the 1970's revolution and the Islamic concept of djinn to tell a fantastic horror story. It wasn't an "Islamic movie", or a "religious movie", but it used those elements well. (Similar to "The Exorcist" - it's a film steeped in Catholicism, but it's not a Catholic movie, if that makes sense. Whereas the recent sequel was criticized the most for actually ignoring the Catholic aspect of exorcism.......a specifically Catholic practice, and the antagonist of the film was specifically a demon from Catholic mythology. You can't simply excise Catholicism from the story and expect it to remain a coherent thing!)
      I think my objection is that so many film makers - or storytellers in general - simply discard religion entirely instead of treating like a piece of our real world - distasteful or not.
      It's a bit like seeing images of streets without any of the garbage, or the electrical wires, all the ugly things you never think of, but you definitely notice when they aren't there, because it's not real. There's a whole scene about that in the documentary "Crumb", about the artist Robert Crumb. Fascinating man and a fascinating movie, if you want to listen to some new ideas on what art is and musings on how awful the '60s were.

    BRAVO to this! This was amazing. A24 rarely disappoints. They are redefining the horror genre with films that make you think. There is a time and a place for ax wielding maniacs, and then there is intellectual horror. These A24 films are never as literal as their trailers. This movie keeps you guessing and was very suspenseful. The first half is a little slow because you’re expecting it to be paced differently due to horror generally moves faster…BUT they are setting up the story and every detail and every piece of dialogue matters later. This gets in your head and in a good way. It challenges people to THINK. The two lead actresses were amazing and I've never cared for Hugh Grant movies, but he is deliciously evil in this. • @alexanderwinn7446
      @alexanderwinn7446 7 months ago +14

      @@noahbalulisit was a metaphor. The doors going to the same place meant that no matter what you believe (or don’t believe), we all end up in the same place. The “horror” came from them beginning to question the very thing they believed with all their heart. The film itself is a metaphor of deconstruction of religion. That’s why it ends the way it does (no spoilers for anyone). I mean, without spoiling, the title “Heretic” is shown to be blurred at the end. Mimicking the idea that she was so convinced in the fact that he was a heretic in the beginning of the movie, but as she got to questioning her own beliefs, the idea of him being a “heretic” became blurred.
      The movie is meant to be her own personal journey through deconstruction. How the realization of the nonexistence of your faith and religion can be jarring at first, you don’t want to believe it. You suppress it (like how she revealed at the end that she knew about the prayer experiment all along but chose not to believe it). But as you begin to go deeper you realize that your religion likely borrows from other religions, and that you have no reason to believe that your “prophet” is not a false prophet.
      The true “horror” wasn’t Hugh Grant’s character. It was the idea of realizing your life has been a lie, and coming to terms with that
