This Is The Essential 1st Stage Of Learning BJJ or Any Martial Art

  • Today's video comes from a viewer in Europe who is a BJJ Blue Belt and as involved with a program where he will be helping teach police officers Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. He said that they've done 1 class already and that many of the officers were receptive but some of them weren't. His question to me is about tips on coaching these people.
    In this video I share some ideas on teaching people Brazilian Jiujitsu that don't want to learn it. I also share the idea of the 1st stage of learning Brazilian Jiu-jitsu or any martial art.
    If you're in a situation similar to Grabrielle then I hope the video is useful to you.
    Thanks for watching.

    A BJJ black belt once told me: "There are two kinds of noobs. The kind that need someone to prove to them that jiujitsu 'works' and the kind that need someone to show them they can do this without getting murdered.
    The first kind you just wreck shop on. The second kind you let play and then do some sweeps to them and give them some back and forth.
    The skill is in being able to determine what kind of person a noob is in the first few seconds of that very first roll."

    Chewy I'm a police officer, and I teach a few different types of law enforcement classes including defensive tactics. Police officers for the most part already think they can fight, and that makes them hard to teach... But he might be teaching officers that are being forced to come because their boss said they had to go. In that case they have to be there and can't leave. With police officers, teach who wants to learn and put the others on the back burner or talk to their bosses if it becomes a problem.

    The best “instructors handbook” I’ve ever read said on the first page, “you can’t teach them anything”. That was a hard pill to swallow, as a young instructor. The second part of the quote was “they can only teach them selfs”. So the takeaway was that the most important skill of the instructor was to inspire and create motivation in the student. And how to do that? Well that’s the rest of the book

    What I love about learning from my instructors is how I can relate to their teaching. In light of what is going on right now, as a black man I do believe it is good to teach police officers BJJ. I think part of the reason why we see these fatalities ( when it comes to policing) is because police officers don't know how to physically control people without using deadly force. The George Floyd case is direct evidence of this. The office didn't know how to restrain him without using fatal tactics. A BJJ white belt with a couple months of training would have known how to control him by not using a sickening and deadly maneuver. Same thing in the eric garner case. The man had him in a dangerous choke hold and didn't understand he was killing the man. This stupidity drives me insane. My only concern is that bad cops that learn BJJ will put it to bad use. I'm curious if you were ever concerned that you were teaching dangerous techniques to bad people ( not necessarily just cops). But I also think the BJJ culture will help cops in many ways especially in improving character. BJJ attracts many different people, so cops rolling with people of diverse backgrounds I think will mitigate their inherent biases about people.

    • @williamwilkins8022
      @williamwilkins8022 4 года назад +24

      I totally agree in the general case that cops should train in grappling, however, I don't think George Floyd was murdered because the cop didn't know how to restrain him properly. The knee on neck pin used by the cop is not one of the sanctioned pins used by his police department, so he would have been taught other ways. Plus, George Floyd had already been handcuffed and there were three other cops there. I think only reason for him to have used that pin would be to have inflicted pain/suffering on George Floyd.

    • @FFTuk
      @FFTuk 4 года назад +3

      William Wilkins was going to say the exact same thing. I’ve talked to police and corrections officers about this in the UK and I’m a long time BJJ practitioner. I think that teaching BJJ in addition to their regular close quarter control and arrest training would be a great idea, as disproportionate force is usually used out of fear or lack of knowledge. BJJ Training would give them increased confidence and more knowledge of what is safe and what is not. The best thing about black belts is that they can roll with anyone (young or old) at any level and keep them safe, even spazzy white belt ego filled guys. The police could do with more of this composure. But it takes a huge amount of time and dedication which not every officer will have. I will say though that the officer in question would have known that he was restrained and that no weight of any kind should be placed on him in this position, and he should in fact be sat up as soon as possible. My vote from a white guy in the UK- accidental murder. Tried to inflict pain because he was pissed off that the guy resisted arrest. Jail time 100%, and never allowed to police or work in security again.

And as they well know, not everybody learns the same way. This will give them additional arrows in their teaching quiver. Besides from actually enjoying it I think there are 2 main reasons people behave like this. People have egos. They can't accept getting beat up by anyone let alone a guy half their size which is going to happen all the time in jiu jitsu. Also, jiu jitsu takes a very long time to get a hang of. People want results tomorrow but getting to a black belt skill level takes many, many years. Even to be competent in jiu jitsu it takes about a year or 2 of consistent training. But even in a year or 2 you're still considered a beginner in a sense.

    From personal experience on both sides of this situation and sometimes giving this type of person ownership can help. One approach would be to have that guy walk through situations that he has seen or been in where he had to confront a potentially dangerous person. From there find out from him what constraints he has as far as tools to use to resolve the situation. Then work from that to help.
    If someone puts thought into how this will help them and is still not receptive then they truly do not want to learn.
    Maybe he will spar with a buddy who is into it later and realize it is worth the effort but ultimately he will have to make that leap.

    I say to police officers that don't want to learn jujitsu, send them to Ohau, where dang near everyone is trained in some form of martial from the time they could walk until currently. They'll learn or get their asses handed to them. My friend Trey Corrales was the senior Army Modern Combatives trainer for Wheeler Army Airfield and Schofield Barracks Hawaii. He would have Renzo Gracie come and roll with his class, to show them and let them feel what a blackbelt is capable of. The guys that didn't want to be there would change their attitudes after that.

    “I’d just shoot ‘em” is the most annoying shit. I hear it everyday. The guys I work with make fun of me because I “do that karate stuff” and they always find a way to bring up how cowboy they think they are. I usually ask them where their gun is. “in my truck” to which i normally respond with “do you think you could make it to your truck?”. I work with some lazy dudes who try to justify their laziness with how a gun being their (only) self defense.

    I wish the police just wouldn't recruit people that are unwilling to learn how to safely submit people. George Floyd would still be among us then :(

    • @SvenStadt

      No! The only way to pass a person out is if you squeeze BOTH arteries. That guy had pre-existing health conditions, according to the news reports I've seen of the preliminary autopsy. That cop may not have been the best cop, but Mr. Floyd had some substances in his system at the time, I heard....

    • @SwordTune

      @@SvenStadt Yeah, which may have been treatable if they dealt with him properly instead of kneeling on a cuffed suspect. They already had him restrained. They serve the public, and that includes Floyd. If he was under the influence of substances or making wrong decisions, the solution is not to prolong his situation but to help. If the police do not exist to help the public then what are they for?

      Safely submit people . . . That's an oxymoron if I've ever heard one.
      Sure, submissions practiced in the gym are reasonably safe, but that's only because there's a culture of "I'm going to submit if this goes too far." If you have to restrain an opponent, and they don't tap to an arm bar, the only way to finish the fight at that point is to break their arm. With an RNC, the only way to finish is to choke them unconscious.
      BJJ is force. Yeah, the proper technique might seem effortless at times, but this is violence. There's nothing safe about it.

    I think for cops at least they are built up by the fact that most people are good. Even bad guys most times don't want to hurt people. So that means a vast majority of the people don't fight or half fight. Even less for strong looking cops. So they are lucky they haven't had someone scary and dedicated fighting or trying to hurt them so they are lulled into a false sense of security that they don't need to train and they are already as tough as it comes. I understand how the mindset happens. Somemcops can't be taught and hopefully they stay lucky

    Where do you ask questions??
    Iv been training for like 2 years on and off and I was wondering how I could be a better training partner?? I seem to be annoying some people and a blue belt just fucked up my neck in a guillotine after seemingly (guys a blue belt and outweighs my skinny white belt ass) having trouble with my guard retention and upping the intensity to the point where it freaked me out abit and I lightened up to try and make it safer.. then he jumped passed my legs when I went to sit up guard and caught me in the tightest guillotine I have ever felt and it felt like my discs in my neck slipped or some mad shit ahahaha ... is this just jiu jitsu because iv never had anything like this happen before in the 2 years iv been training and I'm wondering if it was something I'm doing because iv had a couple of other white belts tell me I go to hard ..I don't think I do tho, i play a guard/guard pass and pin based game and only use triangles and armbars right now so I can't go hard if that makes sense?? I don't think iv ever hurt anyone or rolled in a way which makes it unsafe for my partners and I definitely havnt been doing no car crash strength guillotines on people ahahahaha... am i being a wimp and should I roll lighter and just let people tap me or should I go hard and not ever lighten up if I feel it's not safe because I think that's how that one guy fucked up my neck 😅... feel confused or like im missing key components of bjj mindset or something.. please give me some advise if you would be so kind @chewjitsu

    I'm not a police officer so it would be nice to get a real perspective but I would have thought BJJ was tailor made for the police force. Can't think of a better art for safely restraining and controlling a member of public who you are trying to protect (even if only from themselves).

    I call it "otherism." If someone else has a skill I don't have, it's so much easier to make an excuse why their skill is stupid and useless, than to learn that skill for myself. So not only do I not have to learn it (with this excuse), but I'm already better than you for not knowing it (in my mind, anyway).
