  • Why on earth would you train BJJ if you're going to get injured???
    This is a question that came up recently from one of the viewers who is interested in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu but is worried about training because of the potential risk of injury.
    In this video I share my personal reasons as to why I train in spite of injuries. One is a story about an old power lifter who was a mentor of mine when I was a young kid. The way he presented himself was an inspiration to me.
    I talk about the deep reasons as to why I've been involved in BJJ since 2003.
    I also share a couple ideas on how to potentially mitigate the risk of injury and avoiding getting injured.
    This is a pretty long ramble with some different twists and turns in it. But I hope that it's somehow useful to you with your training. :)

    For my blue belt promotion we did an iron man (where you roll with everyone in the gym from the white belts to the black) and before I even knew I was getting promoted that day I dislocated my shoulder performing a shitty ankle drag takedown and my shoulder got ripped out of its socket. It was a previous injury but then I went and relocated it and my coach told me that I was getting promoted too and asked if I still wanted to do the iron man I said "Fuck yeah I still wanna roll!" And I put my right arm in my belt and grabbed it immobilizing it and I rolled with everyone in the gym with one arm. Many of them put themselves at the same handicap to even it out and I did really well ironically. It was one of the greatest days of my life and I wouldn't give that up just to have not felt the pain of dislocating my shoulder.

    • @gerasbetlas
      @gerasbetlas 3 года назад +2

      That iron man thing seems to be a bit ridiculous to me :) the gangs do that to their newbies (just beat a guy up in the group) i think your coach knows when you ready :) there is zero need to roll with 30 people and go crazy like you did :) unless you feel a bit more superhero that you endured 30 guys going 50% on you.

    • @rohitchaoji
      @rohitchaoji Год назад

      @@gerasbetlas I think the Iron Man might be like a rite of passage than a qualifying exam. Like in a gym in my city, when you get belt promoted, you get thrown by all the higher belts. Some gyms will have everyone whip their belts at whoever got promoted, etc.

    Truth. And people have huge amounts of sympathy for someone who sits on the couch and still got hurt, but if you're beat up from the gym or bjj (from actually doing something with yourself) it's your fault and everyone has that "play stupid games win stupid prizes" reaction.

    I started training because I was at the academy with my kids 4 days a week, yet didn't have the motivation to get to the gym after my my dad passed this year. Fell in love with the sport watching my boys train, and thought I would try it myself, since the adult classes are right after the kids classes. No excuses, right? I was hooked immedialty and can't tell you enough how much bjj takes the pain and stress away, and helps me get through the tough days.

    Strangely, i have always had an irrational fear of starting things too late in life to qualify their passionate pursuit. Like the window had closed on my getting good at something i was potentially interested in. Even as a teen! As an older man, i thought about the guy crossing my "finish line", and he didn't give a fuck what other people thought about his endeavor to succeed in something. Took me until the middle of my life to become more self-aware, and less self-conscious. Better late than never. Really enjoyed this video. I'm sorry you lost your Mom so young. Thanks Chewy this one really hit home. This year I've torn my pcl, broke a rib, and even chipped up my front tooth lol. But I haven't lost the drive to still train. The other day I told a good friend of mine that I was going to start training for the next local tournament. And his response was, "oh nice going to get yourself injured again, good luck with that." It didn't deter me from my goal, but has been lingering in the back of my mind. Injuries happen and I'm happy regardless of what happens

    Thanks Chewy, great vid as always and this perspective really resonates with me. Until about a year ago when I decided to get my shit together and start working out, I was overweight and did zero exercise and woke up every morning feeling like a fat old woman with a hunched over back and sore feet. I'm 43 years old and only in my 2nd week of BJJ and I fully expect injuries, but an injury from doing something rewarding that you love is preferable to feeling like you've been hit by a truck every day simply because of neglect and laziness and inactivity. The body is meant to be used.

    Third going on fourth year practicing BJJ. This year partially tore by distal bicep tendon one week before IBJJF dropped out but trained 4 days later modified to not use that arm at all. Before that similar to both shoulders. Modified to not use that body part. Recently rib pop again one week before competition training. Still competed anyways. It did affect some things but overall did well. But 2 months later still not healed so...gonna do just tech and drilling and no rolling see if time truly heals. Rib injuries suck. 5 weeks into BJJ severe rib coastal separation took me out for 6 months. Keep at it with the ups and downs. Good advice thanks brother.

      Go for it brother!! I have a C5/C6 posterior/anterior fusion too (rollover accident) with about 40 percent reduction to mobility and have gained a little back, but its pretty much permanent. I had a crazy fear initially of rolling onto my neck or anything having to do with twisting or cranking it in any capacity and with the guidance of my team: i'm pushing limits everyday! Know yourself, your body and the limitation of movement then adapt your techniques and train within reason bro. If there is anything you don't feel comfortable with, I know your coaches will understand and have you work the technique from another angle and I also tend to use more neck/back defense, leglocks, deep half guard etc. as ways to mitigate the chance of anyone getting too close to my neck from jump. I wish you nothing but the best and we will progress together!

One thing I try and do to get my training partner thinking if I can't get my arm free or simply don't want to stay held down; try framing (turning in) and finding a way to straighten your arm out and either try to get a butterfly hook in or entangle legs. I use Lockdown whenever possible as a means of both leverage and distraction. Hopefully that made sense and sortve helps ;) good luck! If I find better resources I'll let u know.

The gym I train is closing, and the our coaches are brothers. So we had less than 20 days to find a new place and one of the brothers went out on his own and got a gym just for him, whithout letting the other brother know until he announces to all the class. So bascially we are forced to choose between one and other coach, which creates kinda of a broken family vibe. What should I do? Go to a completely different gym instead of choosing between them? Btw, I live abroad and that guys were like my family far from my family...

    I need some advice. I have been doing bjj 6 days and yesterday I felt a rib pop when I had someone applying a lot of pressure. I thought I might have broken a rib. I stood up and stretched and didn't feel any pain. Took deep breaths and no pain. When I laid on my stomach in bed I felt a little discomfort noting major. When I apply pressure in the area I feel a little discomfort. Laughing and coughing I don't feel it.
    I have class today. I feel like I can drill without problems but I think in rolling if someone gets in side control on the bad side it might hurt. I don't want to make it worse and be out completely. Thank you guys.

    Hello. I have a question. Who is the Bernard Hopkins of BJJ? I watched Hopkins fights over and over again and learned a lot about boxing, like I would pick up on nuances and tactics, techniques I didn't notice before, and it became fun to re-watch fights and pick up the depth of boxing, like learning a language. Hopkins first fight was 1988, so his foundation has to be good. So, who is a good BJJ practitioner, that is fundamentally sound, rarely is out of position, tough like an old school philly fighter, that a person could watch and re-watch to learn from? Thank you.

    ANYONE WHO SAYS BJJ IS NOT AN EFFICIENT WAY TO DEFEND YOURSELF HAS 0 FIGHT IQ. The only situation were it's not effective is if u are getting jumped. But honestly unless your a damn good striker your best bet in that situation is either get a WEAPON OR RUN. That's just comments sense. 1on1 bjj is still king, the only way to counter bjj is with bjj. Even a damn good wrestler would haft to use bjj to keep you from ripping off limbs. Thanks agian great video!!

    You will get injured in anything active you do....any sport or even hiking, biking...anything...you WILL get injured at some point. Live life and enjoy it all, don't let the possibility of some nicks and bruises stop you from doing the fun things.

    Question: I'm a two stripe white belt. Recently rolled with a 4 stripe white belt. I'm 180 pounds and the guy I was rolling with weighed at least 250 pounds. The guy obviously knew he weighed at least 70 pounds more than me, but proceeded to try and get side control by literally slamming his body weight down on my ribs. Sprained my ribs and they still hurt today. I may not be able to train this week. Guys at my BJJ school were "congratulating" him by saying "hey your opponents will remember that."
    I'm kind of pissed off about it, but not sure if I should say anything or just let it go. Kind of makes me want to choke the guy out. Anyway, how would you guys react?

    Is there any major differences between BJJ and Gracie Jui Jitsu?
    I’ve been training BJJ for a few months and I’d love to have a focus on self defence with my training and I was wondering if I could get that with BJJ. Plus I love my gym and want to know what I’m getting.
    Cheers chums!

      themusicguy Thanks Dude!
      That’s helpful. I’ve been think about adding more boxing to my training and finding out it’ll help with my BJJ only encourages me more to include it.
      Thanks for the help!

    Question, if I already have a herniated disc. Would it not be advisable to do Ju-Jitsu?

    • @irontoad777
      @irontoad777 3 года назад +1

      Hey bro you can train. You need to explain to your coach that you have disk issues and adjust your training accordingly. I'm 47 and started training 2 years ago. I have herniated disks in my neck and lower back and a few other wear and tear injuries. When I'm sore or hurting i let my coach and fellow class mates know and they are careful with those areas. I have to tell you bjj has strengthened my neck and lower back and i hurt less than i ever have. Now 95% of the time i can train normally. I've never felt better. You can do this, go get your bjj on my friend.

    Here's a more important question. How do you continue to train AFTER you've been injured, or while you're injured. Like if I stopped training to let my meniscus heal, I'll get really far behind. But I just cannot train as hard as I'd like to - and as hard as I used to - with my bum knee. How do you train and continue to improve your game and you're general level of fitness, when your body will just never be the same again?

    if you have any injury, you have to do intermittent fasting (24 hrs)! i know it sounds nuts, but studies have proven that it lowers c reactive protein. c reaktive protein is an inflammation marker and a lot of pain comes from inflammation.
    also if you want to go nuts, do intermittent fasting and the carnivore diet. carnivore hasnt been proven yet, however its very promising so far.
    i have a herniated disc (c5 c6) and arthritis in multiple joints, im only 25 and the past 3 years were ruined by all the pain. i started carnivore and intermittent fasting approx. 8 days ago, I FEEL GREAT!! Back to bjj on monday :)

      Fallout MGTOW Make sure to do a lot of mobility training such as mobility wod my friend, inflammation is a biological response to what has happened to you body, so always make sure to go after the root problem and not just the side effects of that problem

    What’s your routine if you have one to train your antagonist muscles?

    • @assassin295
      @assassin295 6 лет назад

      I don’t find it odd at all let alone “very” odd. Chewy even mentioned how jiu-jitsu keeps you crunched a lot basically using the majority of your pulling muscles so I was wondering if he had a specific routine he does to train the majority of his pushing muscles to balance out his training and prevent injuries.

    The community aspect of bjj is the same as any type of community the more time you spend with them the more you know them and get more comfortable around them. Church for example wouldn't work if community wasn't a part of it.

    I'm in a bit of a situation chewy! I have been training judo for about a year and i started jui jitsu about 7 months ago. But i had a bjj seminar and it was on a day i trained judo so i said i'll go to the seminar but miss a jui jitsu session for me to make up for the judo the next day. But my judo sensei had a HUGE go at me saying it was disrespectful then he calls my jiu jitsu coach a prick! I'm still training but it just doesnt seem the same with judo and i'm loving bjj more than ever what do i do?

    • @Matt-zi3vd
      @Matt-zi3vd 6 лет назад +4

      I would say your Judo coach is an egotistical prick! Judo throws are dangerous and I would be 100% sure he wouldn't lose control and drop you on your head before continuing with him. If you want to miss a class for any reason that's your business not his. Whether it be a BJJ class, another Judo gym or a pie eating contest he has no right to do that and owes you an apology IMO. Maybe he was having a bad day?
