  • BJJ Question from Adolfo. Here's what he asks. . .
    ==========
Chewy, sometimes online I hear Black Belts suggest, “Train with intention” what exactly does that mean to you? I’m never really clear what that means.
    ==========
When you hear a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Black Belt say train with intention it’s very simple. It just means stepping onto the mat with a purpose or focused on something.
Oh and for the record, 9 out 10 Black Belts will probably agree that it's a damn good suggestion. The 1 that doesn't is probably McDojo. Now the intention could mean a ton of different things. . .
Your intention could be to hit the new technique you’ve been working on or to avoid getting smashed from a position you struggle with. Your intention could be to not get frustrated while your stuck in an uncomfortable spot during a roll.
Heck, it could even be to make sure you roll with the tough guy that you avoid during rolling because you’re scared of losing.
Just depends on what you’re focused on at the time.
For me, when I roll with a focus on a specific technique, my intention always starts with grips. I ask myself, “what do I need to make this technique work?” and I work for those specific grips.
And whether I’m competing or rolling I’m hyper focused on getting the grips I need. Because if I get the grips, I get the techniques. That’s the way it works.
I mean, when you breakdown BJJ to a granular level, it’s all about the grips and body positioning. Every technique begins with grab this and this. It's the reason a person that controls grips wins the roll or match.
This is why I put together a course all about grip fighting. #1 to give you specific techniques to break and dominate grips. But just as importantly to get you to adopt the mindset of a grip fighter.
A grip fighter is someone who doesn’t accept someone’s grips and fights for their own. Just this mindset can give you a skill boost to any position.
And if you’d like to give your grip fighting skillz a boost then grab onto the link below and check out my Get a Grip course.
    www.Chewjitsu.net/Grips
To wrap this one up to.
Set an intention for your next training session. And if you can't train BJJ right now then set an intention on your next lift, run or whatever you're doing to stay in shape.
    Talk to you next time.

I found myself doing this about 1 year in just naturally, i started keeping a jiu jitsu diary where I wrote down my plan for the class e.g. one day I’d practice having more confidence in the stuff I was doing and another day I’d work on only closed guard attacks and whatever techniques we did in class. It’s been really helpful for the past 3-4 years

I tell my students the exact same thing, but I also mention the concept of actively thinking about something.
Don't come to training turn your brain on for 2 hours, and then turn it off for 46 hours. Maybe think through the problem on the drive home, sitting on the toilet, watch a 5 minute youtube clip, ask someone how to solve the problem.
Ps I usually suggest you have the intention for a few weeks, not just changing every class.

This is solid advice! It’s the same principal I internalized when I played football; during hitting drills, I’d line myself up with the strongest/fastest guys and got clobbered for weeks. Now I roll with anyone of much higher rank than me (namely, the three Black Belts) at the dojo. It helps that they also give me feedback afterward.

it's one of those problems that's so unique to jiujitsu. In most fighting styles, even grappling styles like judo, you've got the availability of the technique de jour pretty much all the time. For instance, you can do o goshi from numerous grips, or if you're doing Muay Thai you could do a roundhouse from practically anywhere. But in jiujitsu some moves can only ever occur in very specific contexts. If you're really focusing on mastering the triangle choke, but you spend all of your rolling in the bottom of mount, you can't even really attempt it. So it takes a much more conscious effort in jiujitsu to train with that kind of targeted goal, although it's definitely worth it.

There is a certain point at which you get enough things committed to muscle memory, that it frees your mind to stop focusing on the exact placement of your left foot, and start focusing on other things, because you know your foot placement, it's automatic, and you know it by feel and can adjust it without thinking about it... until that time... you don't have the capacity to focus with intent. The good news is, this elevation afforded by muscle memory, it scales up as you go... you start uh muscle-memorizing? whole transitions... but until you have enough programmed into muscle memory, mentally your already overwhelmed just trying to survive ... how are the new guys to take your advice? I don't think I would have been able to. I ask cuz we got a new guy at our gym, and of course everyone told him watch RUclips, watch RUclips... so he asks me of all people what channels to watch... This is smt i needed to hear cuz i know this, but dont like to admit it. Theres this one guy who has gotten a lot better at passing my guard cuz we roll a lot together, and he’ll eventually make his way to mount. But being in his side control and his mount, man it fkn sucks. I havent experienced that lvl of uncofort for over a year cuz ive always been rolling with ppl who im better than, or ppl who are strickly better than me. He is in a lot of ways my equal, and a lot of ways better than me, which makes rolling with him so challenging. And having him on top of me makes me want to tap so badly, but i dont. Nevertheless, ive been a bit reluctant to spar with ppl and ask them to start in side control or in full mount for a multitude of reasons.

@@10Sethg, that’s awesome. It’s good to know that things improved and that it’s going better for you now.
I’m very new to it all. I’ve been training for just two months (I actually started three months ago. I did Jiu Jitsu for two months, but I’ve been out injured for one month). I’m a bit of a slow learner so when there is a new technique, then I need to drill it a lot before I can dial it in. The learning curve when starting Jiu Jitsu is so high, but for those two months I really gave it my all and did my best. I was completely incompetent, but I was enjoying it and actually having success regarding getting submissions, etc when rolling with other white belts. Then I hit a brick wall a month ago. I injured the muscles around my rib-cage during sparring. I went to the doctor to get an X-ray and thankfully my ribs weren’t broken. He said that it was a muscle injury. He told me not to do BJJ for 2 weeks. Foolishly I didn’t listen. I decided to go to class and just see the techniques and do some light drilling. But, I ended up doing some sparring….!!! I sparred three guys and it hurt every time, but I kept going. It hurt a lot after class…..and that night in bed was very painful and I could barely sleep. Next morning was absolute agony and I couldn’t get out of bed. Every morning is the worst as it’s when it’s most painful. I couldn’t go back to my local clinic to see that same doctor because he warned me not to do any BJJ. I thought my condition would improve in time….but it’s still very painful. I haven’t been able to do any Jiu Jitsu or even do any push-ups/weightlifting for one full month now…!!!! It’s super depressing!!!
When I was doing Jiu Jitsu I was so happy. Now I’m just down all of the time because I can’t train.
I just have to stay positive and look forward to when I recover and get back training. It’s just so frustrating, because when I start training again, I’ll feel like I’m right back at square one.
Did you ever get any injuries? How long were you out for and what was it like when you started back?
By the way, sorry for the long message!! I didn’t intend to write so much…haha!!

@@jerrylong6011 Thanks for the encouragement and response!
I have had to miss some class time. I also got an injury to the ribs, though not to the extent you are dealing with. There is one afternoon class I had to stop going to because everyone there was way bigger than me. My ribs starting hurting from the big guys putting their weight on me and I ended up skipping some classes for a couple of weeks. I find it hard to do but highly recommend warning training partners if you have an injury or problem. They have all dealt with injuries if they have been training for any length of time and know how much it sucks to miss class. The big guys dont seem to mind not putting their weight on you or you could even do positional sparring where you stay on top and reset if you lose the position.
The other "injury" I had that put me out for over a month was impetigo. There was a sore on my ankle that wasn't healing and by the time i realized what it actually was it had spread and took two rounds of antibiotics to clear up.
Getting started back wasn't bad. There was some catching up to do but I recommend taking notes and at this point, knowing as little as we do, we have months and years of training before we start to feel competent and missing a month or two of training really isn't going to noticeably change that timeline. When my ribs were hurting and i was talking to a purple belt about not wanting to miss class to let them recover he told me that i'm not going to learn or improve from just one class so skip the class rather than prolonging an injury that puts me out for an extended period. That's been really helpful advice because I feel so far behind and think that i can't afford to miss a class. I guess you're learning that lesson the hard way though...

Hey, Chewy, I've been interested in doing Jiu Jitsu for about 6 years. It all started when I first learned combatives while I was in ROTC in college. Now I'm in the Air Force, married, have a kid, and we're saving for a house. I can make time, but it's always been a matter of finances. I've been to a couple of free classes at different gyms and a friend of mine watches RUclips videos and then trains in open mats where the coach is fine that he doesn't show up to/pay for the classes. I've tried doing the same thing where I live, but the coach at the gym I went to told me that it's frowned upon in the Jiu Jitsu community. Do you have any suggestions?

I was getting crushed by a 220lb purple belt(I'm a white belt) and I found this little pocket for air to my left side and he noticed that and used his GI jacket to cover the little pocket and basically cut off my air. Seemed like a dick move but I assumed it was allowed

@@stevenconnolly28 it was prob with good intention. im not sure how new you are, but learning to not panic when being crushed and out of air is really the first step..i think...im also a white belt, but once i could control the panic things got a lot easier.

Hey Chewy I'm a very weak man I'd be lucky to bench press 130lbs and can't do 20 push ups. Can BJJ help me defend myself even if I'm very weak?

Yeah bro Ik I’m not Chewy. Strength definitely helps and your probably not gonna be able to beat somebody 100 pounds heavier then you who trains unless your really good just like any combat sport. I’ve seen people 145 smash guys who are 200 just with better technique, and that’s in the gym . Against an untrained opponent on the street you would kill those guys because it’s all about grappling knowledge and skill or size. Also anybody who ever wrestled can attest to this strength in a weight room doesn’t necessarily transfer to grappling strength. One guy on my college wrestling team was really weak in the weight room but on the mats if he got a hold of you he would bend you in half so don’t worry about weight training strength it’s two different things.

@@Steincooperfieldritzenheimer since I’m still new and outta shape I just sort of try to defend the majority of the time. After a bit over a month I realized my size, height, and strength are irrelevant factors. So I don’t try to go for submissions unless we’re drilling or older moves.
So for now I just try to stay out of submission and run the clock. It’s nice being told that I’m “strong” by my friends there but this isn’t weight lifting ya know? Moderately above average strength doesn’t help much here.
