I really am envious of you living in the Eternal Spring city of Kuenming. Flowers through out the 4 seasons. The azalias and rhododendrons are spectacular in the Spring time.
China is definitely becoming a role model for other countries to look up to. In my humble life time I’ve seen a poor troubled country with a huge population get transformed into this modern and advanced country in virtually every way. I was working in HongKong in 1978 and remembered that you never got any change back because it’s just expected. HongKongers looked down on the mainland Chinese who were treated as intruders and illegal workers
Born and raised in HK and had lived in many countries in the past … which really opened my eyes and made me love and appreciate HK even more. In my opinion HK is still the best. ❤
I have to let you know that it's not just China that doesn't have a tipping culture. Most Asian countries are like that. It's just typical Asian culture not to ask for tips.
I hate tipping. I love the fact that you don't have to tip in China. I was in Nigeria once and after I paid a round number currency note expecting some change, the waitress didn't come back with the change. When I asked her, she just ignored me. Such arrogance. At least have the courtesy to say the balance is for tipping.
I live in Canada. I appreciate that we have people here from all over the world who can tell us what we're missing. Honestly, I'm afraid to visit China as I'll quite likely not want to come back home!
The weirdest thing is, unlike most other countries, the police in China exhibit a sort of 'counter-nationalism'. They are much friendlier and more patient with foreigners, especially when you look different from the locals, maybe
When I was in college in 1994, I had the experience of standing for more than 30 hours on a train from Shandong to Harbin. I admire myself when I think about it now😂
Since retired, I travel to China every year and stay for about a month. The food is cheap, hotel is cheap and everything is 1/6 cost of US. I will leave again in winter. I don't like heat and humid.
You should see the tipping culture in the US, its world leading. Nowadays it feels like you go into a coffee shop or restaurant just for tipping and if you are lucky they will give you something to drink or eat, just like watching commercials on TV with bits of TV shows inbetween.
Im from Singapore, ITS SMALL AND "SAFE" but many had said China being such a massive country, its well managed and is as Safe...wow! Was in Arizona and people asked me where im from, told them Singapore and they replied.."is it part of China?"...😂
In November 1978, Mr Deng Xiaoping visited Singapore. He was so impressed with this country's progress, he asked if China could borrow the "architect of that country" to help plan the economy of China. IN 1985, Singapore government released the Deputy Prime Minister, Dr Goh Keng Swee (吴庆瑞博士) an economist trained in UK to help draw up the economic development blueprint for China. Since then, there was no turning back and China was blooming beginning from Shenzhen, Shanghai and other cities along the coast. The economic development soon spread inland to other cities including Kunming. So, beginning from one leader who caught the vision, the country makes great strides. Please make a visit to Singapore and you can see a more advanced version of Kunming. Oh, you can use Mandarin and English there. The people there speak and write both. The people there are waiting for the day when one can catch a HSR to go to Kunming. Maybe, in 10 years' time.
Lizzy, I understand your "harrassed soul" rant and its reasons. I too am harrassed by the "failure" of so many countries in so many ways. Even the countries I like very much make me want to shout about why they can't get some of the obvious things right. But like you, I don't want to name names. I love your spirit for fairness and truthfulness and your love for perfection. I saw your video about your mum's trip with you on the fast train and I could see how passionately you wanted her to share your enthusiasm for what you see as so good in China. It takes people a while to understand things. Keep up the good work. Can you share your food moments with us, and maybe museums and libraries and theatres in China. Also, how could they get their cities to become "botanical gardens" as you put it, when only a decade or so ago, they were choking with pollution?
It's good to travel, for people to see the differences in other countries, some people don't have the luxary of traveling abroad to other countries, to see the world, but, you're very lucky & fortunate enough to afford that luxary, some people in America, don't travel abroad outside their own towns, let alone to other countries, so they stay behind the times within their own countries, but I guess once you've lived in a well developed country, get used to the way things ordinary people take for granted, then travel to other countries, that's when you start to appreciate the nicer things that China has to offer it's people. So that in itself is a good thing, cause when you go back to China, you'll appreciate all the effort, the hard work, the improvements that China has made for it's people. I cannot speak for every single Chinese person who lives in China, but I can say that a majority of them, are content with life in China as opposed to say, people in UK, USA.
One thing about living in China, it is very convenient in every way. It is also the safest place I have ever been. After a few days there, your safety is never even a thought to consider.
when you go to a restaurant to eat, the server takes your order, the server brings your food/drinks to your table, when you are done you pay the bill - so why tips?

First of all, China is not an immigration country, so it is very difficult to obtain permanent residency in China, but at the same time, China is very tolerant of all those who come to China. There are various ways to stay in China. As long as you have a normal heart and live and work in China, you will definitely be very happy.
living 27 years in Shanghai I agree with most of the things as well I don't use the perfect transport infrastructure myself except the very advanced highways by car . Too crowded in the trainstations and Metro . Airports I can't avoid but meantime I apreciate very much the polite and friendly entry and exit proceedure. Maybe the biggest surprise for first time visitors. Next surprises are the very friendly population and finally the extreme beauty of some provinces in the backyard of China like Gansu, Sichuan a.s.o. The biggest downside in my opinion is the cashless payment system. For a short time visitor without wechat nearly not to handle! Besides, people , specially kids loose all overview about their accounts , furthermore the last bit of privacy in China is totally gone. Nevertheless, China is a fantastic place to live and for my part , I pay cash whereever it's still possible 😁
There is a bargaining culture in China. I am English, my wife is Chinese We got married in England because this is where we live ( We also had a wedding celebration in China for the benefit of her relatives and friends but that's another story) We bought the wedding dress in Suzhou which is THE place to go for a wedding dress in China. We bought a lovely dress complete with veil for about £60 , for a dress of the same style and quality in The UK, you could add a 0 to that price easily, maybe even more. However the funniest part was before we paid for it my future wife seemed to argue with the owner of the shop, voices were raised it all looked very uncomfortable. I asked my fiancée "What's wrong?" She said "Shh, trust me, l know what I'm doing😉" Then she beckoned me to follow her and we walked out empty handed. Then the lady called us to go back in. After another discussion ( This time a lot more subdued and polite) the lady went to the back of the shop and then emerged with not one but TWO beautiful party dresses and put them on the counter. My fiancée examined the dresses, smiled , said something to the lady and both the wedding dress + the party frocks were carefully wrapped, she paid with her phone and out we went with them. Then she explained what had happened. It turned out that after a lot of bicker banter not only did we get the beautiful wedding dress etc. for only 60 quid, the lady had thrown the party frocks in F.O.C! Imagine trying to do that in Marks and Spencers! 😂
LOL, I am with you on this one, I used to live in North America, and I had been living in a pretty shitty neighborhood back then, and I didn't feel it was dangerous whatsoever and I even went out in the middle of the night for some POPEYES, I heard guns shots at night all the time. But the waiter took away the cash and the tableware and then disappeared. Finally, we went to catch the plane without a penny.
Apparently, you have never been to other more civilized countries in Asia where trains run on time, people are friendly and polite, no tips and no bargaining, no yelling and shouting.

I was shocked when I tried to buy a gift card in a restaurant , on the receipt, it was asking for tips. 😂
We love you too Lizzy.
I have to let you know that it's not just China that doesn't have a tipping culture. Most Asian countries are like that. It's just typical Asian culture not to ask for tips.
tipping is akin to giving money to a beggar.. if u want to insult a chinese, just give him money.
In Canada tipping is out of control. I deliberately shop at competitors that don't point a device at me to select a tipping option.
I hated tipping as a customer, did i tip o much or too little? It bugs untill you go to sleep.
Chinese people are efficient and strive to deliver excellence in all they do.
Can’t tell you how much I enjoy your channel. You are such a great person. ❤
Always good to have various bills and change so they can't do that to you again.

The weirdest thing is, unlike most other countries, the police in China exhibit a sort of 'counter-nationalism'. They are much friendlier and more patient with foreigners, especially when you look different from the locals, maybe
The complaint about your travel is exactly the situation that China had been 30 years ago😅 What an amazing progress during last 3 decades!

*Kunming is a spring city with four seasons.*
Instead of expecting tips, many restaurants include a "service charge" of 10% in the bill, so read the bill before you decide to tip.

I don't know why I always come to listen to Lizzy's whining.

LOL, I am with you on this one, I used to live in North America, and I had been living in a pretty shitty neighborhood back then, and I didn't feel it was dangerous whatsoever and I even went out in the middle of the night for some POPEYES, I heard guns shots at night all the time. Now I resided in Beijing China for a few years, the last time I went back to the same old neighborhood which had dramatically improved its safety over the time I was there, I felt extremely unsafe and uncomfortable, I guess I was too spoiled by China, lol.
