  • To put it mildly, Adam Carolla didn’t grow up with privilege. He doesn’t even know how to spell it. So where did the current obsession with privilege come from? And how do we get over it?

    Script:
Privilege…what's the obsession with privilege? It's driving me nuts! Not only didn't I have privilege, I don't even know how to spell it. (I think there's a ‘d’ in there somewhere, isn't there?)
If I told you a story about a kid who grew up poor, product of divorce, did a lot of dumpster diving, sister ran away at age 14, welfare and food stamps…if I told you that kid was black, you'd go, “Well, yeah, that's because of systemic racism.” But if I told you that kid was me, you'd go, “Whaaaaat? What are we doing? What happened to your privilege?”
The real white privilege isn't privilege: It's knowing that nobody cares about you, good or bad. No one's gonna do anything for you because you're white and no one's going to do anything against you because you're white. I'll give you an example. When I get pulled over by a cop, I assume it's either because I was speeding or the cop’s an officious jerk. But either way, my skin color doesn't play in. If I was black, I'm assuming that it was “driving while black,” or that he was profiling me.
Let me give you another example of the white privilege I’m talking about-the privilege of not obsessing over privilege. I had a neighbor call the police on me during the day-during the middle of the week, when I was doing a construction project-because our phone lines got crossed. So I picked up the phone to call Anawalt Lumber. My neighbor picked up the phone. I said, “Oh, sorry. I think our lines got crossed somehow.” Next thing I know, a police cruiser rolled up to my home.
Now, if I was black, I would have no choice but to think that was racially motivated. I mean, why else would your neighbor call the cops on you because your phone lines got crossed-unless, in fact, you're black? And as a matter of fact, I'm not even black and I think it was a racist incident.
Do you get it? Whites do have privilege, but not the privilege the race hustlers are selling.
I don't think people really drill down enough on this. I've had horrible things happen to me my entire life. I've had school teachers and counselors that were horrible. I've had construction foremen who treated me like crap. I've had program directors who treated me like crap. And the good news is, is I'm white, so I just know they're a-holes, not racist.
Why do we want anyone worrying about someone else’s privilege? Who cares? This is America. You make your own breaks. Anyway, isn’t the goal not to judge a person by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character? I think I heard that somewhere. What's the guy's name-Marty? Anyway, privilege means you have it better than most, not that you have it better than some.
How about tall people? Tall people have an advantage over short people. Thin people have an advantage over fat people. Attractive people-you're welcome-have an advantage over the homely. There are always gonna be people lower than you on the totem pole, no matter what color your skin is. Wait a minute-are we allowed to say totem pole? I feel like that's racist.
Every minority person living in the United States in 2021 is doing better than people living in the Congo, Bangladesh, or many other places around the world. And if you don't believe me, then why are they all trying to get here? Do the math. We're a systemically racist country that people are trying to kill themselves-they're literally risking their lives-trying to get into the systemically racist country. Let's just say this country was a facility, and the facility was systemically racist. And every year, people died trying to hop the fence and climb the wall to get into the facility. People of color? Would that make sense?
The great news is, is that if you're willing to bust your hump, there's no better country to do it in. So maybe we should stop obsessing on skin color or gender or sexual proclivities and get on with the hump-busting.

Are we under the assumption that having all of that guarantees the nullification of white privilege and racism? Oprah is a billionaire that got profiled and degraded by a white woman. Not saying “all white people” of course. But let’s not be in denial. Many “whites” help fought for civil rights across the board. Many against as well.

My privilege was a mother that loved me enough to take care of me until I could take care of myself. And I remember the food stamps and the shame that they brought each time we used them. I don't feel privileged to be white, I feel privileged to get up everyday and accept that I am where I am due the choices that I have made.

Well it can get really technical and philosophical as the question gets more nuanced. We are all products of our environment and genetics. I believe in privilege but not necessarily race privilege. I agree that there are other factors at work. I do agree that its more accurate to say things like majority privilege, class privilege and good looking privilege. Wouldnt you agree with that? There are two magic weapons used by dictators to fool the people: one is class hatred, the other is national hatred. Class hatred means provoking the poor to hate the rich, while national hatred means provoking one nation to hate another. Mao Zedong killed the rich with the poor, and called on the poor in China to liberate the proletarians all over the world. Hitler used the Aryans to kill the Jews and called on the Aryans to conquer all mankind. The United States is very special. Wall street or Deep State want to obtain unlimited power, but they can not encourage the poor to oppose themselves, so they can only deliberately create racial antagonism. The aim is to isolate the right white male like the trump. At the same time, they describes themselves as a super representative who respects science, attaches importance to environmental protection, supports women's rights, supports people of color, supports LGBT and supports the equality of all mankind.

I don't dare speculate about your motives, not knowing you. But I have the distinct impression that 'white' folks misread Sowell. I think he is trying to stiffen the resolve of black folks, NOT trying to soothe the fragile egos of white folks. ''
When covertly bigoted white folks see a comment like this, they tend to pat themselves on the back for not being black. Inwardly they are probably thinking that poor Thomas is a 'credit to his race'. Is that why they quote him with such zest?
Have they forgotten the history of their own 'preferential treatment'? Not that it always worked out that way in every individual case, but I think most informed people know the general drift of history.
It is true that many poor Europeans crossed the Atlantic in search of better conditions. African 'immigrants' to this side typically DID NOT come of their own accord, and many perished along the way. Such scars do not disappear in a single generation.
These remarks are NOT to be taken however as an endorsement of 'inverse racism'.
Sometimes counter-narratives of racial supremacy arise among groups with long-standing historical grievances, and these narratives may do much harm. The 'black muslim' cult is a classic example of this. Two wrongs do not make a right, and as Scripture says, 'all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.'

"When covertly bigoted white folks see a comment like this, they tend to pat themselves on the back for not being black. Inwardly they are probably thinking that poor Thomas is a 'credit to his race'. Is that why they quote him with such zest?" Nope, They quote him because personalities like him stand up to the race-baiting in America that's promoting hate and division. Sowell is old enough to have lived under ACTUAL systemic racism, so he has something to compare present-day circumstances to.
"Have they forgotten the history of their own 'preferential treatment'? Not that it always worked out that way in every individual case, but I think most informed people know the general drift of history." Oh we know, but diversity hires have been a thing since the 1970s. It made it hard for my dad to get a job because he wasn't black.
"African 'immigrants' to this side typically DID NOT come of their own accord, and many perished along the way. Such scars do not disappear in a single generation." We are far more than a single generation away from slavery, and several generations removed from the de jure racism of the past. The reality is, race-baiters want to keep resentment alive.
"Have you ever read the book of Exodus, in the Bible? The Israelites were slaves in Egypt for over 400 years. They could have entered the Promised Land after two years, but it took them 40 years, and even then their troubles were far from over!" Uh, the reason why they were in the wilderness for 40 years was because when they sent spies into the Holy Land, they were so intimidated by the giants in the land and didn't have faith in God, so God punished them by declaring that the current generation would not enter the Holy Land except for Joshua and Caleb who did not doubt God, and that's why they roamed the wilderness for 40 years until that generation passed away. Very bad example. Also, the Bible is clear that all the troubles that Israel had were self-imposed. Whenever Israel turned away from God, He removed His divine protection and caused famines in the land (like in the Book of Ruth) or let their enemies beat them (like the Philistines). Yeah, I have read the Bible, and it does NOT support what you're trying to push.

@@gromhellscream4487 so for example, before 1968, you could be denied home ownership or bank mortgages for being non-white. The 1968 civil rights act changed that, but most people's wealth are tied to their family's wealth. So if someone bought a nice home, in a good school district in 1965, that is now worth over $500,000, but a black family was denied that, and was forced to rent in slumlord conditions in inner cities with bad school systems, those impacts carry into the future. The wealth gap between racial groups closes a little each year, but the reason so many black families are poor and live in dangerous neighborhoods is a carry over from racist laws. The average white family had centuries to generate wealth and buy land, where the average black family has had about 50 years with the same rights. And these effects carry over to a lot of other areas of life. Because in the USA, school district funding is dictated by property tax, poor black familes trapped in the inner city had to send their kids to the worst schools. To this day, the most underfunded and underperforming schools in the nation are still majority black.
So even though there is no more legalized racism, systems existed in the not so distant past that led to a group socioeconomically underperforming today because of racist systems. Systemic racism is different from overt racism, which trips people up. Black families being on average poorer then white familes (8 to 10 times poorer actually) is not due to current people actively denying them rights due to their race (overt racism) but due to the lingering impacts of a system that disenfranchised people for centuries (systemic racism)

One of my friends was talking about how black folks are in major poverty, systemic racism being the cause of it, etc. He proceeded to ask the Nigerian kid if he’s experienced racism in America yet, and if he came from poverty in Nigeria.
I’ll never forget what he said. To paraphrase:
“Black Americans, even in poverty, I believe still have a house, a bed, and a lot even television. A lot of them are big too (fat). So, that means they have plenty of money to either buy a lot of food, or eat the McDonald’s all the time. That’s not poverty at all. That’s a pretty good life in many parts of Nigeria.”

I grew up in South Florida around many first-gen immigrants from Africa, the Caribbean, East Asia, and Latin America. Nigerians, Haitians, Cubans, Jamaicans, Trinis, Filipinos, Dominicans... you name it.
And most of them told me at one point or another that they couldn't stand native born minorities because no one would have put up with their spoiled entitled attitude back home. I had one African coworker tell me after seeing some African American youth rant about something or other, that back home, the village elder would have beat that kid with a rod for mouthing off to his seniors. I had a Jamaican neighbor send her kid back home after he started running with the wrong crowd.
Native born Americans don't really know how good they have it until they start spending more time with people who lived in countries where "privilege" means electricity and running water.

I would prefer frank rebuke to innuendo.
If you were to defend American exceptionalism as a doctrine, what would be the foundation of your defense?
Do you deny that hubris and national pride have been the source of many tragic wars?
'For where jealously and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing.'
(For the larger context, see James 3:13-4:4 at the very least.)
No doubt you have read Psalm 2 from beginning to end.

@@jesusislordsavior6343 Hmm, I feel I should apologize for a such a quick cheeky comment. I think the particular issue I took was that the verse out of it's full context puts a lot of emphasis on ownership, where-as I much prefer the other more imagery around a shepherd or father which implies a lot more intricacy. In a similar vein I think of while I might legally own my dogs, land and house, but it doesn't end there - the much more important thing to me is that I'm the caretaker and custodian of all three. I suppose I focused too much on that to really read what you were saying.
If I were to defend American exceptionalism, it certainly wouldn't be modern day America - I certainly believe the early Americans deserve a level of reverence. At one point the concepts America was founded on were revolutionary, but now America has forgotten some of its' founding principles, and other countries have adopted a lot of them. There's not a huge amount that sets America apart from the rest of the developed world - except the sheer size and power of America compared to other nations - which is something that for those of us in other nations who fall under America's protection should probably be a little more grateful form.
I suppose in essence you're right, that the privilege isn't necessarily to be an American - it's to be born into a place where food is plenty, and have an opportunity to meet all of our needs, and make what we will of our lives. It's not an America specific thing, but it is an enormous privilege, but something to be grateful for, not proud of. Something that wherever we are we should work to preserve and improve for everyone still to come - contributions are things I think it's reasonable to be proud of.

My father explained to me that officers have been shot at and even killed when pulling someone over, so they are carefully watching your every move. Dad said to immediately roll down my window when I pull over, then keep my hands on the steering wheel where they can be seen at all times. If I need to reach into my glovebox or purse for my ID or car registration, FIRST ask the officer if I can and tell him where it’s located before you reach for it and move slowly when doing so. When dad told me this as a teen, I didn’t get mad or think his advice was lame, it made perfect sense.
This is advice I passed along to my sons. If we had been black, then it may be a thought that crossed my mind it’s what we have to do because of systemic racism towards our people of color, but we are not black.

I remember we were on Welfare and food stamps, and Mom was working 2 jobs, then at age 14 I started working to support the family. But we all survived and are doing well now. Why? Because we were raised to work hard and have good morals. We were spanked when we got out of line and punished for doing stupid shit. That was amazing! It needs to be a commercial run on every station!
I have been saying this my whole life. My father grew up in crappy circumstances without family wealth (which is a big lie people keep saying holds you back). He’s been pulled over for having a tail light out or just random other crap by over zealous cops. (We love cops by the way and prefer them being over zealous rather than blowing off stuff they find suspicious.) He is as white as can be. He worked hard, finished college in his sixties and owns an expensive home in a great neighborhood now after doing “menial labor” at a blue collar job his entire life. That is with several health crisis (including cancer) and other things along the way.
Instead of teaching people to blame others and tell them that one particular part of them holds them back, why don’t we empower people by saying the truth! We all have aspects we have to overcome and everyone can be a jerk for some reason or other. Even me!

My privilege was my dad being a sociopath, my brother has schizophrenia, and I grew up poor and was not taught anything about budgeting. I joined the military at 18 but, got out in 4 years because I was young and thought someone would hand me a job. I worked very hard and got a great job in a few years and built a life for myself. At 45, I trusted in family and friends who I should not have and lost almost everything. I lost my job, apartment, savings and most of my belongings. Now at 51, I've started a new job and rent a room from an older couple. Why am I privileged? Because I live in the United States of America and I can work hard and rebuild my life. I am. I can make choices to do better. There is no "system" to prevent it. I am grateful everyday for this.

Oh the irony! White privilege allows all of you to deny that White privilege exists. People of color can't be "colorblind" and ignore the discrimination they endure every day. We need to listen to their experiences with empathy and realize economic disparities passed down through the generations are not functions of laziness/personal failure, but something far more complex. In 2019, the median net worth of a White family in the US was $188,200 and that of a Black family was $24,100. That's not to say that there are not poor White families and rich Black families, but the disparity is stunning.

When I was in College a number of years ago, back when people discussed things toward gaining knowledge and enlightenment, before they started to attack people for such discussions. I had a number of conversations with my black friends. And I discovered something that I would tell my friends in hopes that it would help them in life. And that was that I did not wake up as a “white” man, I did not eat as a “white”man, I did not spend my day thinking I was “white”. I simply lived my life, only considering my race when I got into academic discussions on the subject. Though I am “white”, I did NOT define myself as “white”. Or rather, being “white” was not something I considered in my every day life. I don’t mean that I define myself as “purple”, or some other woke silliness like that, no, I am “white”, but being “white” was something I just never really thought about, at least outside of some academic discussion. However, what I realized was that a lot of my friends that were black did define themselves as black. And as you are suggesting, most everything was put through that lens. Not all of my friends, but most of them seemed to constantly remind themselves that they are black. Being black was a defining factor by which they lived their lives, and I believed that that was tragic. Not tragic to be black, but rather tragic to always be considering their color within the scope of everything they do. And moreover allowing that priority to be a filter on how they saw the world. Of course, there are reasons for this, but reasons or not, it is not a good way to live.
Today, I see that others have also noticed that there are people who do not constantly identify with their race (like me), and we see that as a central theme of critical race theory. That zealot faith (critical race theory) preaches that whites should celebrate their race and identify with each other as such, as “white”, to be proud of being “white”, and pretty much everything a KKK grand wizard would preach to his flock back when the KKK was relevant (negatively). But for myself, I don’t want to wake up being “white”, or eat as a “white” man, yes, I am “white”, but I don’t define myself by my whiteness. I don’t think about it at all, other than maybe academically. Let me repeat that, I don’t think about my race in most every aspect of my life. It just is not something I have in my mind when I wake up, or eat, or jog, or shop, or get pulled over for speeding, or whatever else I do. Yet that filthy religion call critical race theory wants me to waste my days pondering on my race. It will be a greater tragedy if we allow critical race theory to segment society into racial compartments rather than break down those walls that divide us.
This is all off the top of my head, so I am trying not to offend anyone, I am just trying to say that it is nice to just be a man, and not have to always qualify myself as a “white” man, I mean, that is what I always did, my race never enters my mind outside of academic discussions. And I wished that for my College friends as well. I wished that they would find comfort in just being a man (or women), without always having to qualify themselves as a black man (or black woman). It doesn’t change the fact that I am white, or they are black, it just removes that qualifier as a filter that often complicates life.

Man. Look at some of these beautiful, appreciative comments...and please count me among them. I don't speak of it, but growing up without often having utilities, meals, a home, transportation, etc, leaving as a teen with no ID or opportunities to engage the workforce and figure it out, being roughed up and thrown in jail so many times or at the wrong end of guns, and all the while having wonderful black/brown friends who had everything they needed and would tell me, "Get it together, man!", just makes all of this recent "race" stuff more bizarre. 8 years ago, I was broke, had to move into my parent's house, and my employment opportunities were slim to none. I then received what, frankly, I needed the most; a swift kick in the ass to get off it and do something, anything, or I would be homeless. So on the recommendation of said ass-kicker, (To this day, thank you Roger), I went to CDL school and became a Truck driver. It was hard work to learn and do, but I stuck with it and basically became debt-free. Now, I teach new drivers how to do our job and last year, I closed on my first house with one of my sisters, (pay half of the mortgage and the house is occupied when I'm at work).
So yeah, tell me again how this "Privilege" played a part in my own personal success. I could use a good laugh.

My privilege was growing up in both predominantly minority neighborhoods and predominantly white neighborhoods. I’ve lived in urban, suburban , and rural areas. This comes with the privilege of knowing first hand and for certain that there is no such thing as systemic racism. Only people can be racist.
Also there is a distinction of not liking someone’s culture and not likening someone’s race. For example, I’ve met people from urban minority neighborhoods who really don’t like country music and the lifestyle and culture behind it, and I’ve met people from rural and suburban predominantly white areas who really don’t like hip hop music and the lifestyle and culture behind it. This has nothing to with race. There are many people who are from those areas who also don’t like their own culture and popular music they grew up with. So many times when someone calls something racist it’s about the culture not the race.
Beyond culture is the content of your character which is what most people in the world focus on. Sure there are stereotypes, but these stereo types lean heavily on how you dress, how you talk , and behave/carry yourself. They aren’t based on race alone as the left wants you to believe. If someone dresses snd behaves completely differently you will see that race didn’t matter at all.

It is jealousy that most disgusts me. It's such a petty, self-defeating emotion. I see it every day. Most men look at me and think, "I want what he has." Perhaps one in a thousand thinks, "How can I achieve what he achieved?" He's not jealous - he's motivated. Who knows, we might work together one day. But most men are not like that. They have the desire, but not the initiative. It's like a dog watching you eat and wishing he was a human.
And that's the tragic thing about jealous people. They think they hate me, but really they hate themselves. Because deep in their hearts they know they're too lazy to fight for their dreams."

Yeah, you're privileged if you have the luxury to not think about your race. If you start out poor and became successful, no one's saying it didn't take hard work, but it sure helps to have privilege. In fact, when liberals talk about privilege, they aren't saying you're rich or powerful. They are in fact talking about something social, something that Adam Carolla refuses to understand or is simply lying about.
For example, your resume is more likely to get looked at by a potential employer if you have a white-souding name, like, say, Adam, than a black-sounding name, like Jamal.
    Source(one of many): cos.gatech.edu/facultyres/Diversity_Studies/Bertrand_LakishaJamal.pdf
For another example, you are more likely to get pulled over if you are black, and more likely to get searched, even though you are less likely to have drugs, guns, or other contraband. That disparity disappears at night, when the race of drivers is no longer clear to cops. No one has ever said all pullovers are because of racism, but there is a racial issue in the system that targets black people more.
    Source: www.nyu.edu/about/news-publications/news/2020/may/black-drivers-more-likely-to-be-stopped-by-police.html
The reason people try to get into America is that America and other western nations have destroyed much of the world, including Congo and Bangladesh, in order to steal their resources and labor. Slavery, colonialism, CIA-backed coups, invasions, funding of terrorist groups... The USA and Europe have done it all, and that is in part tied to their racism. They are the most powerful nations on earth, and they treat non-whites outside of their countries even worse than they treat their own. What a stupid argument on PragerU's part.
