The transformation of Arnie from a shy mellow nerd to a cool kid on the block to a supercool deranged greaser psychopath is among the best transformations I've seen in any movie.
I wish more films that have the protagonisf toughen up would take inspiration from this

Great review! I stumbled over this review just today because I own a similar car. It's a -59 Belvedere blue on beige but I still get "Christine" all the time. When I was in high-school I saw the movie "American Grafiti". To say it had a profound effect on my life is to underestimate things. I wanted to be like the kids in that film and started to look for a cool car to fix up. In -78 I found my Plymouth Belvedere in a junkkyard and it was ready a few months later with a lot of help from my dad. I drowe it to school and later to car events and people thought it was a cool car. But then of course the movie Christine came out and my car became extremely recogniseable. Everyone called her Christine and evetually I gave in to that and that has been her name ever since. Over the years I faced a lot of preassure to change the color scheme to fit the movie car, change to Fury trim and so on but I never did. How could I? It's my Christine. Today I'm 62 and Christine is 64 and I still take her to car events every now and then. So I get this film 100%. It's a love story. And if it's true love it lasts. Until death does us part as it's said.

From an "American Weird Kid" growing up in this era - this story makes perfect "Nerd-vengeance" sense.
This is a movie about finding love, in abuse.
When Christine is on the building line in the beginning, she is the ONLY red one... because in reality, all of the Plymouth Fury's, were all boring beige colors. But not her, she's special.
And on the line, the Supervisor (hmm, a cigar chugging prick who bares a striking resemblance to another character, 20 years later..." Well, that guy sneers and cusses Christine as "ugly" - just as he does 20 years later.
When the assembly line was suddenly stopped because the inspector finds a flaw, and that idiot had his hands in a "Chop Off" area - well, her hood fell down... wasn't her fault. The humans suddenly stopped the line - it was inertia...
Add onto it, when Christine was still "a baby" - some asshole smokes in her, and just drops his ashes on her...
    So, she killed him.
Okay, fine - she's a "Borderline Personality Disorder" (aka female NPD) - but, Arnie gave her a lot of love.
"Brand new wipers, for a broken windshield..."
Christine NEVER killed anyone that did not assault her in the first place.
    It was all self defense.
And Arnie loved her... the whole time.

George LeBay tells Dennis that Arnie had the same look in his eyes like his brother at the sight of Christine. I thought that explained well why he sold the car to him

Thank you for the really good and well thought out review.
I remember seeing most of the movies reviewed on this channel on the big screen. Only movies I haven't seen on the big screen are those of the 50's, but remember seeing them on Saturday Afternoon Matinee shows on TV back in the day when VHF/UHF channels were on separate dials. I really look forward to seeing the results of your "next revvvviieew!"

Wow, I've never looked at the soundtrack before - right there on the playlist, it calls the attack by The Shitters, literally as "The Rape." - That is an interesting piece of information on the intent of the storytellers.

@@RetroNerdGirl If you listen really close at the beginning, the very end of the factory scene, the noises of the factory will sync up with the music as it transitions to 1978.
When I lived in Alaska, I must have watched this movie a dozen times or more, probably twice a year. Not much else to do at -50° than overanalyze old movies! LOL

There is a common theme in movies about one who is bullied... they stumble upon some 'Elixir' which permits them to initially protect themselves, but which they invariably abuse! This goes back to 'House of Horror! (& possibly before!)

My mom loved horror. She loved the car. She had a love for the 50s and 60s cars. The first time I watched this was in the mid-80s the night before Easter. Why was it on at that time, I don't know. Sis and grandma were asleep of course and mom and I, being insomniacs, stayed up late to catch it. Mom was sympathetic to the car! WTF. I also went to school with bullies like her. At my school, kids were allowed pocket knives. Yeah.

Unfortunately they're looking to screw up another King adaptation. Including this one.😭
A Ga-ron-tee movie from Stephen King that WILL make you cry is, "The Green Mile"
A great first time/share for everybody.
    As we go along:
    1. The guy on the assembly line was killed because his cigar ash fell on Christine's seat.
It also establishes that she's evil from the beginning.
    2. If Buddy is in High School so am I..
    3. He should have gone after Darnell financially after discovering Christine was trashed in HIS garage.
    4. There was a story line where Dennis and Leigh were in a relationship but it was cut out because it
would have made the movie too long and it would have changed the dynamic of their relationship with Arnie.
    5. Love Harry Dean Stanton.
    6. Christine's windows were blacked out so we can't tell if Arnie is driving her or if she's killing Moochie,
    Rich and Buddy.
    7. Arnie's "job" for Darnell is running hot stripped parts and drugs. That's why he had an alibi for the attacks.
    9. King's favorite adaptation (so far) is The Storm of the Century. Another first time/share HINT HINT.
To steal a little from "Misery" but not batshit crazy, "I'm Stephen King's biggest fan". Read most of his
books before everything was on the internet so almost nothing gets by me. Including differences in
    the books and the adaptations.

"Show me"....gets me every time! I definitely prefer the Films origin for Christine. it seems more believable, oddly, that the car is just born bad, a cursed item, or possessed by something evil from day one. I like the book too however.

💥💥 I mean you just basically answered your own question why darnell had to die.
He was a witness to Christine coming back all burned up. He called to see if arnie had his Cadillac which he did so he knew arnie wasn't in the car.
It's called getting rid of loose ends pretty simple to me why christine killed Darnell.

When I first heard about this film I thought it would be awful.
A horror film about a possessed car killing people it just sounds like something you'd find on the horror channel. But it is really good the effects are brilliant the acting is brilliant and it's shot so well.
I love the way the songs reflect what it's thinking. It gives christine character

RNG -- so I'm debating whether or not to try to grab groceries before the threat of rain, and here you pop up. I am stunned -- you're a non-driver too!? (That would make young nerdy you safe from Christine -- you couldn't drive her anyway.) No wonder you love New York, land of taxis. And yet like you I dig automobile design. I wouldn't have a clue what to do with a Lamborghini Aventador, but I like looking at one. The whole interrelation of human and car probably still works best as literature. The Theodore Sturgeon short story "Killdozer" has a broader and more fantastical backstory than the rather throwaway TV movie, and I appreciated King's story "Trucks" ending with speculation that humanity might be reduced to representing trucks in cave paintings. I think the car becomes a player in the bigger and creepier question "Can our civilization just go ahead and function without us?" I recommend the Ray Bradbury short story "There Will Come Soft Rains" to set the mood for that. I never got into this movie, it never sold me -- and yet that bugs me, because I think this is a rich theme still awaiting a definitive treatment. Sorry to just have literature to recommend this time, but sometimes that happens in the world of moviemaking. Gotta sign off -- still need those groceries -- but right after I do I'm going to try to attach a quick sweet Canadian cartoon from 1966 in which Martians mistakenly think that cars are Earth's dominant species. It goes along rather cutely until around 8:30 when it mentions "parasites" and "hives." To date I think this remains the single best exploration of Humanity vis-a-vis Cars (as opposed to "Duel," which still relies on a hidden psycho driver). As ever your insight and passion are greatly appreciated, RNG. (Oh, and it's just plain Alexandra Paul -- not Alexan-dri-a -- no relation to Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez. Alexandra Paul appeared in "Dragnet 1987" as "the virgin Connie Swail" (!) and went on to become a star of the TV show "Baywatch.") Excelsior! ruclips.net/video/wFaHArkYLsM/видео.html

I don't think I've ever met anyone over the age of 17 who doesn't drive and doesn't know how. I assume that you have spent your whole life in a major city like NYC? I can't even imagine living like that. To each his/her own.

John Carpenter and Stephen King. Good combination. You gave a very good review of this movie. You see a lot of details. Love your voice when you describe Si-Fi movies.

Ah, Christine-- from the days when I used to pick up each new Stephen King novel the minute it came out. I was like a Deadhead camping out for tickets. This one wasn't one of his iconic masterpieces, but it was a good book and, as you say, the 50s elements were timely-- back then we used to say that the 80s were just the 50s in color. I've always wondered if King named the main character Cunningham to connect it to Happy Days (which makes it even funnier that Scott Baio was considered for the part). I never did see the movie, because I had already come to believe that it's impossible to adapt Stephen King-- the only King movie I ever really liked was Creepshow, which was an original (and that would be a great movie for you to review-- I assume you love it as much as I do). But, judging from your review, which I always trust implicitly, they did keep the main character arcs intact and this story was a true tragedy. As you said, some people just can't be saved and there are few among us who are incorruptible. Thanks again for a wonderful review, RNG. :)

It was such a pleasure to review this film and I agree with you completely. I do believe you are also correct about the Happy Days reference. 😊

There is a strong chance of a new version being made. I hope it is more a sequel, even tangentially, as the ending definitely made it an option.

I think Christine was more of a bad influence on Arnie, as opposed to having literally possessing him in the movie. It was more of an unhealthy relationship, as if Christine was being manipulative.

It appears that Arnie can manage himself that he doesn't need anyone the 2 had taken a dislike of his car his parents are in disgrace and they were blamed on him not having Christine at the residence and getting him another is but Arnie regard his only car Roland Lebay's father gave him handing it down.

I never thought about it until watching this retrospective, but perhaps the backward rolling odometer represented a countdown to her owner's inevitable demise? Some things can't be saved. Some people can't be saved. Just a thought. Also as for Darnell's death, remember that he insulted Christine. "You can't polish a turd." As we learned from watching The Car (1977), homicidal vehicles simply do not forgive insults.

I have not seen AKIRA. It's been recommended a lot. I will consider it. I might be into anime, but I haven't been exposed to too much of it or any of the very popular stuff. It's on my list though.😊
