Once seeing the finished project I have to wonder. Why not just buy cloth and do whatever size you want with static grass? There was next to none of the original green grass showing.
I’d love to see more videos of terrain from wish or AliExpress. I know it’s all cheap crap, but I’ve always been interested in seeing it actually used in an interesting way.
I did a whole table of Caribbean terrain using trees, shrubs, and some scatter crates and barrels that I got off of Ali. Also used simple posterboard to make my buildings, chipboard for my bases. For "real" materials, I used some drywall spackle for gap fill, tile grout for sand (just like Luke), cheapo rattle can spray paint, and some Armypainter washes. All in, I could build another table like that for about $50, definitely less than $100, and that's including the paint, grout, and spackle again. Chucked it all down on a $55 Tablewar 4x4 mat, and that was the spendiest bit of the whole thing. People ask me if my buildings are 3d printed, it's awesome.
Your added grass definitely takes it to the next level. I actually had made one from felt a few years ago. Nice thing about that is, you can make it much bigger.
I bought this mat earlier in the year, it's great for the price as is. I checked Wish but found it to be much cheaper off of Aliexpress. Generally anything you can get on Wish you can find cheaper on Aliexpress due to the sheer mass of sellers.
I'd love to see you do something similar to this, but making various sized miniature bases into a savannah plain lands theme, complete with tall grasses and everything.
If you haven't tried it rather than staples, F3 carpet adhesive from Ball and Young in a yellow tub good stuff. Need a spatula or notched trowel to apply then lay the sheet down, pull tight and clamp or staple edges :)
Looks good. One thing to note ordering from Wish is that it takes an age to be delivered so factor that in to any timescales for a project. I did a wargaming wish.com shopping video on my channel and was generally suprised with what I got for the money spent. I may have to do another one soon.
Yep waiting for 12 orders on ali express .....£200 worth of recasts... seems like a lot of money but ... all the kits would have been £1200 retail... onky ever had 1 bad cast i love it
Very nice! My boys and I are in the process right now of making our own gaming mat. Collecting materials now, but should start building in a week and post on our channel. I like your static grass application..may have to pick one up
Could it be a good idea to get like a simple clothes rack or install something on the wall on which you can hang your gaming mats?? It wouldn't take up much space along a wall (not more than the rolled up ones take up wherever they get stored) and you get the added benefit of them always hanging straight when not in use (could clip a very light weight on to the bottom too) !
reminds me of the original GW gaming mat, but cheaper and better for cutting up for small field/grass areas. I'd never cut up my original GW mats - but with a minimum of work this is well within most budgets. Especially on this side of the world, Chinese stuff is good value both for cost and shipping.
They would be perfect, but a bit expensive: I use a 5-foot by 9-foot Ping Pong Table. It will require six mats to cover, with overhang. Full retail, at $20/mat, would be $120. I am thinking carpet tape would be good to hold the pieces together, on top of the Ping Pong Table top. Very tempting...
Reminds me of days gone by when you could pick up a grass mat from GW. It had a paper base and ripped easily and the static grass got everywhere lol great tips here mate
this looks pretty much exactly like the killing fields terrain mat which is about to be available to the larger public, only smaller and a fraction of the cost.
would it be worth just spraying some other greens and browns over the top of the mat to keep it low profile and more flexible rather than adding grass and glue to it
If your carful and read the description of items on wish more than once, study the pictures carefully and, probably more importantly, don’t forget that delivery charges can bring the cost of an item up to the same as from other online seller apps, like eBay and Amazon. If you are careful WISH can be a very good way of funding an otherwise expensive hobby, and finally, stay away from the items that could incur import duty, admittedly those are few and far between, but nonetheless be careful.
I think that looks awesome for a cheap setup. I really need to pick up some more of your 6mm dead grass as well, ( any excuse to use my grass applicator ) it really does make a board look realistic. Those are some great looking terrain pieces you added too.
Loving your work and products more and more, the more I see them... Will definitely be making some purchases in the new year ... Keep the vids coming 😁👍
For less than 20 USD its a great buy, especially since its so pliable. Couple things that would be neat to see. In theory could the enamel be replaced with Polyshades/polyurethane? They cost half as much and might already be on hand. A snow/winterized version When you use a tool or product over 15£ like the can of enamel please mention other projects it can be used in. Generic Video Ideas Miraclekoo UV Resin, really cheap off amazon. I'm using it to do windows in MDF buildings but would love to see how someone who knows what they are doing could do. Right now I am using parchment paper for backing while curing (it leaves a slightly rough clouded finish). Love to know what you would use, and any tips on casting bits. Lastly, in the states our craft stores are awash in "Lemax Village collection" holiday tat. In December it will all become steeply discounted. Could any of the holiday trees or textured city display mats be useful?
@@GeekGamingScenics Crap, you called it out specifically too. I am not sure why I thought it was enamel other than me thinking back to a rust-oleum can sitting on my work bench.
These are being sold at hobby lobby now for $40 a pop....I touched it and it sheds more grass then my fuckin black lab. Immediately threw it back on the shelf
I'm new to the hobby and your videos have given me a high standard to play to. I prefer your custom boards but this may definitely adds diversity. Not bad!! And Luke, when are you getting more stock in mate? GGS website is empty 😂
Love the idea. Since I don't have an applicator yet I'd probably use pigments to give it some colour variation. But by now the mat is probably sold out on Wish anyways :D
Awesome how you turn such cheap tat into a masterpiece! Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on mad Bob's miniature's Kickstarter campaign for foldable terrain buildings. They look like a great idea to solve the old storage problem, but obviously would want to hear what the expert thinks
I've met that guy - they're pretty good buildings. Hard plastic, and yeah, they collapse down to store. Put a little effort into them for paint and stuff, and they're solid
Mixed metaphors there my old son, never mix cms with feet unless you are trying to be utterly confusing. Mat wise yeah looks okay but what is the time limit on shipping?
first time I've heard of wish, I'll give em a look. Did you build those buildings? If so do you have a link for how you did it as those are ideal for something I have in mind.
Dude for the amount of effort and price this is baller!
I think the glue, and static grass he added is worth more than the mat haha
Did you buy any chance catch the name of the quick dry glue he used with the varnish mix?
You crazy crazy man, 3 feet and 10 centimetres?
Ruaridh Mackenzie I was gona say the same thing lol
Pretty standard way of measuring in the building trade :D

yeah makes perfect sense, brilliant idea nightfall...... :-)

I have some smaller mats from Wish to test them out. This video gave me some ideas of how to use them. Thanks for this!
That is cool! the end product would suit AoS or LoTR Rohan settlement

How is the mat holding up now that its been 4 years?
Thanks for pointing me onto Wish. Interesting site! Also, great results with the mat!
You made water in to wine here Luke ^^ love it!
I have been looking for a gaming matt and this is perfect. thanks
Cool idea! I'm already on the link to buy one 😁
Interesting tip with the glue/varnish 🤓
Can you cut it to a smaller size? Will it allow you to model it around hills, building etc.?
Where are the buildings from please? They look great and compliment the mat really well!

Fantastic. It looks serviceable out of the packaging but your improvements put it inline with much lauded, high cost teddy fur products. Well done!

Very nice. Thanks you Rock. :)
From what wish has advertised to me in the past I was really unsure what I was going to see. It’s a dark place is wish aha. Great video
Great review! Thanks for doing this video. I've been looking at these mats on Wish for months.
Good tips on this. It's an easy build no brainer. Love this hack. Thanks Luke
great vid, just wondering if that varnish your using is a polyurethane based varnish?
I think this is an amazing idea for a cheap product and turn it into something amazing
Thanks, enjoyed and you have brought some new life to my Woodland static grass applicator.
Ha! Ordered one of these a couple of weeks ago for Rangers of Shadow Deep. Nice to get a preview. Cheers Luke!

To be honest saw this video and ordered one..the static grass falls off in droves..you will need to seal it somehow before use
good on you Luke for sharing the tip rather than reselling em with a decent markup.
Lovely mat. Great work
Lol when you put the foam pieces under it and made a hill my brain exploded through my skull.
This looks awesome, thumbs up!
Got some trees off wish of various sizes in one bag for £2 bloody mint for the money, helps give a size contrast against my titans & knights.
Does it cut easily? I assume it would stick down to MDF to use as fields etc. With regular PVA or would it need the Gator glue style stuff?
Awesome end result 👍🏼

Liking the buildings, where did you get them from?
Also like the buildings and would like to know where these can be obtained
What glue is that?
Once again he finds a product and improves it 👍
Where's the houses from?
nice, ive been buying these mats off wish for years, i have 6 different ones ranging in a good colour variety
can also buy them on Aliexpress
Currently scouring WISH for other bargains! This is amazing. Cheers Luke.
I found a pack of like 20 or 30 pine trees that were all ~40cm tall for a few bucks. Worked perfect for my board
would it be worth just spraying some other greens and browns over the top of the mat to keep it low profile and more flexible rather than adding grass and glue to it
See I was wondering the same thing. I was thinking maybe try dry brushing some other colors in if you don't have a static grass applicator
Matt looks cool ... i need one so i can cut it up to bits. diorama grass for years .... especially as 12" square is probably the biggest i build
been meaning to buy these mats for ages, came up nice
Very cool. Hard to niece it was so cheap!
Does anybody know where those houses are from?
