  • Serialized on my birthday, this Medium Bright Yellow Mach I is a long time companion that has seen its fair share of neglect. We plan to bring it back but before we start, I want to tell you where it ALL started.

So much of your story resonates with me. When I was a teenager in the 80’s, I looked through the autotraders for a cheap cool car. When I found the 71-73 fastback mustangs, I was forever hooked on first gen mustangs. I started looking for 73’s since that was my birth year ( although now I prefer the 71-72 grill). When I saw the front of a 69, I was again forever changed. I prefer the side profile of the 71-73 fastbacks but the front of the 69’s are what really captured my heart. In 1994, I bought my first mustang… a 69 Mach 1. At that time I started reading Mustang Monthy and Mustangs and Fast Fords. The 69 I bought was in pieces because that was all I could afford. I learned how to work on cars with that one. Although I sold that car… I eventually bought another 69 Mach 1 that I still have. No matter what shape it is in, I will not sell it. Keep reminding yourself of why you feel in love with these cars in the first place… then everything else is just details…

Glad to see this car back on the channel. Similar story, sorta, I was 16 in 1973. My buddy down the road from me got a brand new blue '73 Mach 1 with the silver stripes and factory slot wheels. 351C 4V with factory dual exhausts. And I loved, that car. I wanted one sooo bad, but my Dad would not buy me one, and I didn't have the money to get one. So I ended up with a '65 Mustang GT 289 4V. Now, I did love my car, but I really loved that Mach 1. My friend and I spent a lot of time in his car, I got to drive it quite a bit, and it was just what I wanted. Anyway, the following year, my friend was speeding, rounded a corner, swerved to miss a car and totaled the Mustang. He ended up bruised up pretty bad, but I was not with him, which probably saved my life. Fast forward, I retired a few years ago, and thought it would be cool to find an old Mustang and take it to cruise ins. I was looking something in the '65 to '68 range. My wife said, "get a Mach 1." Somehow, I found our '73 in Benson, NC, that had been restored and was yellow and black with the full gauge package. We went and looked at it, spent more money than I wanted to and brought it home. It is a good driver, looks and shows well, and I have enjoyed tinkering on it. I was able to take my buddy, for a ride in the car and we shared many memories. He passed away a few months later. I am so grateful I got to share another ride with him in a '73 Mach 1. Well still enjoy it today.

Happy belated birthday Jeff, I have been following Autorestomod since it’s inception. I have had my 69 Mustang “GT” for twenty years and it is slowly coming back together. I won’t go into details why I love the car here, (to long a story) but like you I am building her the way I want her. Years a go I met an Concours restorer in England who used to restore Triumph TRs to 100 point winners for his clients. His best advise was as soon as the paint dry’s all metal want to oxidize and the best way to have the most fun with a old car is to restore it to a well maintained five year old car. It is not perfect but you can have fun with it and who cares if the paint gets a scratch.

This is why I love cars, hearing the stories behind them. I have a 72 Mach 1 my dad passed down, it has been in the family since 73 and I still remember climbing in the trunk as a kid helping him change the shocks on it.

I remember the video you posted about this car way back when. I have a special relationship with the 71-73 Mach 1. My best friend in high school had a white one with the 351-C and ram air. We drove the hell out of that thing. Driver's seat was broken so we jammed a 1x4 between the back and the base to sit up straight. Lots of good memories in that car.
On a side note, it's hard to think it's been 8 years since your dad passed. I always enjoyed the episode when the "O Team" would pay you a visit. Thanks for sticking around and doing what you do. FYI thanks to you guys I still carry wasp spray, water, and a way to communicate with my buddy in salvage yards.

I followed your journey with this car back in the 1990s when you were in Lakeland. I even remember when you were getting your garage built. I lived in NY at the time and was restoring a 1969 Mach 1 then that I still own. I now live in Orlando and brought my car with me. It has also sat because life got in the way. Now that I am older (we are about the same age) I will be going back through it just like you to get it on the road. You were a hero to me back in those Mustang Monthly days, hope to meet you in person someday. Have you made the trip to Blue Oval Car Barn in Mineral Wells, TX? That would be heaven for a 71-73 Mustang fan like you. Best of luck in your re-restoration of this car.

thank you for the story, it sucks that you had to go through hell to get here, I am glad to see it and you still owning it means a lot. A solid driver quality 4 speed 351 Cleveland with a lumpy cam sounds like a really good way to spend a weekend getting a burger, ice cream and a drive through the hills! looking forward to the rest of the story... My 93 notch back I bought in 95 has spent too much time sitting, and has been ressurected several times and is going on drag week next month! then after that is some road course work at Grattan Raceway in Michigan.
    keep after it! Jeff.

Cool, I have a similar story and timeline. I recall as a 5yr old having a 70 Boss 302 Gr Or. as my fav and deciding I would one day have one. At 16 I got a 80 2.3T and it blew up a few months later. I lerned how to put in a 302 and then went onto hop it up. I was not totally satisfied with it, so was looing in our Buy and Sell Magazine and found also in 94 and also by typo in add a 69 Mach1. It said it was a 351W 4V but was actually missing the motor. I bought it and it needed frame up but was a So Cal car and had no rust, Yellow also and fully loaded. It has been a part of the family ever since and at so many events, good luck Jeff with resto and hope to see you at a Mustang week some day!

Fantastic idea! I'm in a similar position... I've owned a 67 Fastback since 1995, and always wanted it to have a manual tranny. My buddy has been on my case, and is gathering clutch parts and such. Some day, it will have a 5-speed, so it can be the car that I've always wanted to drive across the continental divide to visit our son. Looking forward to watching the new videos.

  • @OlysGarage
    @OlysGarage 18 дней назад

Totally understand the feeling. I am the same way except it was with 66/67 Fairlanes. That's what dad and I were doing back in the late 80s into the 90s. My dad tried giving me 1963 Fairlane Sports Coupe. I turned my nose up at it (regretfully now!) but rather wanted a 66/67 Fairlane. I later set my heart on a 1967 Ranchero XL, Dark Moss Green Met. 289 3sp car. I was 12 years old when we picked up the shell from the local junkyard in 1991. Completely restored it, amateur driver grade, using alot from the stash we had accumulated over the years of buying and selling the 66/67s. It was beautiful when it was done but there was battles fought over what was to be done to it. It never was 100% the way I wanted it, as he wasn't allowing some of my ideas...and that forever haunted me. But it was my 1st car and my 1st restoration, and done with my dad. I drove it for a few years as a daily, up until I went into the USAF. It had been in a couple really bad fender benders, but I wasn't gonna give up on it. Kept it, and fixed it both times. He held onto it for me while I was gone, stored inside and then outside under a lean-to. When i decided to get out and moved back home it went into a storage unit for a few years, then I finally brought it home with me and it's been in the corner of my shop ever since. Its survived marriage, divorce, raising 2 kids, and many other moments in time.... I just have no desire to sell it. Since my dad passed in 2020, I've been thinking that i need to just suck it up and tear it apart and build it the way i wanted to in the 1st place. Put and end to the weird animosity that it carried. Should have done it when he was alive, just to drive down a point! LOL but at that time money wasn't plentiful and I didn't wanna start the arguments again. One day I'll do a video on it. If you look in the background in some of my in-shop shots you can barely make it out buried with crap all over it. If anything, it's still cool to have your 1st car still! 😊

Jeff, thanks for sharing. I understand the struggles at school with dislexia. I've had a teacher so frustrated with me that she broke a yardstick on my back. Home was worse when I came home with D's and F's on my report card. I had to go to summer school every year and still struggled. Jr. High and high school was better because VoAg, wood shop, metal shop, and auto shop was someplace I could succeed. Believe it or not I got a lot of help working through it in the military.
I got a 70 Mustang sports roof for $800 in 1978. It was a basket case. My Dad and I fixed it mechanically and gave it an Imron paint job. I sold the car in the late 80's to pay the rent and other bills. I regret selling it and Mustangs are expensive now. I got a 72 Ranchero Q code instead. When I get time and space in the garage I'm going to rebuild the C6 transmission. Thank you for your video I appreciate you.

Jeff, thank you for sharing the story behind the car, I always enjoy that. We share the same age and, I too was taken by a Mach-1. Our neighbor down the street ( about 72 or 73) had purchased one. I recall only seeing the rear of the car only, Black & Silver with MACH-1 emboldened in the back. I recall the car having huge meat (wide) rear tires and occasionally I’d hear or see it when peddling my bike down the road, good memories.
Truly looking forward to your work on this car and building it to be driven and, more importantly, as you want it to be.

Jeff what a touching story and I’m so glad you shared it. I almost had a ‘71 Mach with a ram air 351 when I was a Ford mechanic fresh out of high school. Unfortunately I just couldn’t make deal. It was basically abandoned at the dealership. If I can ever find a good deal on a ‘72 sprint fastback I’ll make owning one a reality. Until then I’ll have to be happy with my ‘66 fastback. I bought it 4 years after the ‘71 deal fell through. That was in 1984 and I had been in the military for 2 years by then. It was also the same time I finally broke down and subscribed to Mustang Monthly. A subscription I kept for over 20 years. My father found it for me, tipped off my an original owner of a ‘66 coupe he was repainting. The car belonged to the guy’s brother and it was outside of Spartanburg. We went up and the deal was made. It was a factory GT born with a 4 speed and equaloc rear! It was the last car my father painted for me (Silver Blue) before he passed a number of years later. Yes, I still own it to this day, 40 years this month.

Jeff , thank you for sharing your story and spilling your thoughts out! Nobody! I mean nobody understands the connection between Our Mustangs? I was addicted to Ford cars at a early age, as my father only drove fords! My dad made sure my older brother had a conservative 66 mustang with 6 cylinder with 50 k miles on It for a first car. It still smelled new back in 76. When I turned 14 in 77 my dad had asked if I wanted a car? Surrrre! $75.00. later came home my first mustang , a 1966 mustang 289 c-4 convertible with a 100k on the odometer. But the car ran ! It made Fred Flinstone proud with the rotten floorboards for stopping , but it was mine! I have been hooked ever since! Again Jeff thank you for sharing your 72 Mach 1 it’s a beautiful car, we see past everything and the potential of our dream cars . 7:55 thank you for Llc of your writing expertise with Mustang Monthly! I have every issue

Jeff, my story kinda like urs, but I'm close to the end of a two year restoration. Not that I haven't taken breaks along the way, because of lack of initiative.
Mine is gunna be a restomod, Wayne's stang, 1970 mustang Mach 1, summit racing estimates my 302 build will have 400hp but at the point of connecting the engine back up to the car, the water, electrical, and vacuum lines, been so long I've forgotten what under the hood looked like, I've pretty much have the water and electrical laid out. Vacuum lines however I have no clue - changes along the way, block bored out .60 over, new .60 over stock pistons, a magnum comp cam 280 duration 512 lift a highrise aluminium intake with a Holley 600 cfm 4160 with the washable k&n red full filter oval breather, I closed the hood very slowly the first time, it clears, yeah, four speed car, not the top loader.
Any helpful hints on hookup would be greatly appreciated, just North of Houston Texas

Those 71-73s are now expensive. 20 years ago, heck, even 10 years ago they were cheap compared to the 65-70 models. Glad you got a nice toy when they were much more affordable. Great video! Dont ever sell it until you absolutely have to.

I really enjoyed you sharing your Mustang journey, fully in agreement with your build it how you want it. A nice stock looking cruiser is hard to beat. In 1973 I lucked into (OK that luck cost $1500) a completely stock '69 Cobra & that's the route I've always taken. Other than aluminum PI intake, engine is still stock (hefting a cast iron, FE intake quickly kills any dream of remaining completely stock). I've added options that would have been available when new such as AM/FM, race mirrors, etc. In '17 I installed P/S. Yeah, the old man had gotten tired of using both hands to make sharp corners and shift at same time. In '92 I'd installed the quicker ratio P/S sector, and it was much stiffer to steer. After procrastinating 25 years, I finally succumbed and installed the full system.

I have my dad’s original 71 fastback that I came home from the hospital in. I drove it in high school (was a POS) and then it sat outside for 19 years. Four year restoration that was completed right before he passed. It literally is a family member, so i understand the passion.

I enjoyed your writing in the mustang mags. When I first turned 16 I wanted one of these big swoopy mach 1s. This was what a mach 1 to me was. Finally wound up with a 70🙂 At that time the 70 didn't seem as tough as the 71. Since then the mach 1s have been my favorite cars. Really can't understand anyone not liking a 71-72 mach 1. A dealer sent me to Aiken in the early 80s to pick up a 69 mach 1🙂

I have a 63 1/2 Galaxie 500 which I bought in 1986 the year after I graduated high school. It has never been fully restored just a decent looking driver. My Dad and I worked on it together and I drove it throughout the late 80's and early 90's but some engine issues sidelined the car and some personal things left me with very little money and the car sat idle for years . In the later 2000's my Dad and first cousin built me another 390 and that engine sat on the stand in the garage for a few more years but finally I got it back in the car and now it's back on the road. The car has a lot of sentimental value to me since my Dad and cousin helped me work on it and they have both passed on. It will never be sold as long as I'm still kicking.

I fell in love with the 71 Mach1 when my neighbor, who restored 65-66 Mustangs, brought one home when I was 16, back in 1981. I bought it and paid him monthly payments. Had to rebuild the engine, 351C 2V, and drove it through college. Thought I needed a newer car and bought a new GT. Bought a 67 fastback that same year for $800. Thought I no longer liked the 71-73. When I turned 50, I decided I wanted to build another and found this one a couple years ago. Been working on it here and there, but still needs a lot of work. I have all the parts, just not a lot of time. Hope to take it on Power Tour next year. ruclips.net/video/NTf8-sbrmDc/видео.htmlsi=hGqp47Cz436CGkTj

A '71 was my first Mustang. I love them. It drove me insane to take it to car shows in SoCal just to hear people say things like "that's not a real mustang" and "Oh this is the ugly years." I actually stopped going to car shows because of it. It was a time to either fight people or leave the community. I've had some crazy cool cars over the years and nothing brings out the idiots like picking a car that's not in the cool kids club.

I know how you feel. I got my first car in 94 It was a 68 mustang needing restoration. I fixed her up and she was my daily driver until 08. I go another car because gas was killing me she was regulated to weekend cursing and shows. Around 2015 my health took a turn for the worse, I no longer had disposable income it all went to doctors and hospitals. I recently took the car cover off and she fell into disrepair transmission shot floorboards gone Interior rotted. Only thing going for her now is the engine still runs like a new one.
