The age of Michael Vick | The History of the Atlanta Falcons, Part 5

  • Few athletes have ever inspired a city like Michael Vick inspired Atlanta. Vick was a transformational athlete who forever changed how we think about the quarterback position, an apparent superhero who did things that, even years and years later, still seem impossible. His time in Atlanta met a heartbreaking, devastating end. But in the aftermath, against all odds, the Falcons somehow found a way to make us laugh.
    This is part five of a seven-part series.
    Written and hosted by Jon Bois and Alex Rubenstein
    Directed by Jon Bois
    Produced by Alex Rubenstein
    Additional contributions by Joe Ali and Kofie Yeboah
    Rights specialist Lindley Sico
    Secret Base executive producer Will Buikema
    Secret Base managing editor Ryan Nanni

    While I accept that Vick has paid his debt and he's clearly a changed man due to it, but it never sat right with me that people tried to justify his actions by claiming it was a product of his upbringing. This wasn't some small pit bull fight in his basement. Dude was running a farm of over 70 dogs all of whom had to fight over and over again until they died. That goes beyond a bad upbringing. The sheer industrial scale of the operation was crazy and showed an indifference to the animals that borders on insane.

    • @thrustersengaged6290
      @thrustersengaged6290 3 года назад +186

      I would say it's more than indifference. Vick was personally involved in shooting, hanging, and electrocuting dogs, and even killing them by slamming them into the ground. Not to mention the lifetime of torture these dogs endure to become fighting dogs. If 70+ dogs were seized, how many dogs suffered at his hands over his life? Hundreds? His participation and money would surely encourage others to abuse more animals as well to participate. If he is truly remorseful and trying to make right after serving his time then he may deserve forgiveness. But what he did wasn't a 'mistake' like some people say, it was a sick and twisted pattern of behavior that continued for years.

    • @chadowen4766
      @chadowen4766 3 года назад +190

      Critiquing America's carcereal system and saying that he paid his debt to society is one thing and I largely agree with those things. But the suggestion that this was just a natural outcome of his upbringing or a mistake he didn't realize he was making borders on absolving him of his cruelty and that's just a bridge too far for me.

Other major talents in the Class of 2001 include: Richard Seymour, Santana Moss, Deuce McAllister, Reggie Wayne, Drew Brees, Algae Crumpler, Chad Ochocinco, Travis Henry, Steve Smith (Panthers), and T. 1)Why didn't you put Zimmer's comments on the topic?
    2)Lamar Jackson wasn't an "unbelievable failure of karma doing its job", but rather karma getting Petrino higher and higher, so his downfall would be all the more disgracingly hurtful and exquisitely hilarious. After all, we got to have that image of his firing during his TV show!

    I like the whole documentary. But I don't like the part about Micheal Vicks dogfighting ring around 47:46. Full disclaimer: I think he paid his debt in prison, which many NFL players didn't do for their wrong doings. So I think it was alright that he came back. He also tried in later years to make it up.
    But the whole part sounds like a huge apology to why the authors like Micheal Vick. He did a horrible crime in torturing those dogs. Yes, other peole did heinous crimes, too. Many even way worse. But that doesn't make it right. That's whataboutism. Also his upbringing shouldn't be a apology. Something something about jumping from a bridge.
    Just my two cents.

      I think it's just an equal reflection on the celebrity nature of NFL football. Football players are celebrated for their accomplishments, more than deserved compared to the US military. They also are condemned for their crimes, more than deserved compared to the US military. You're right to think of this as whataboutism, but as I recall at the time, the media pounced on Vick, going way farther to attack his character and anyone who supported him than was ever warranted. I don't think the writers want to accuse us of hypocrisy as much as provide a balance of perspective.

    I feel like there's a post-script with Michael Vick's story that probably could have been added to this episode, but wasn't because it didn't deal directly with the History of the Atlanta Falcons:
    After Vick's prison sentence was completed, he looked around for work a fair amount. He had considered both the Arena Football and the Canadian Football Leagues, until an old playoff rival thought that he could be an asset to his team. That rival was the Philadelphia Eagle's Donovan McNabb, who convinced then-head coach Andy Reid to get a deal done. Initially only on a one year deal, Vick not only proved himself still skilled enough to perform in the NFL, but also resilient, since he would be McNabb and Kevin Kolb's backup quarterback through most of 2009. Vick, wanting to make the best of his second chance, was enthused when the Eagles picked up the option for a second year of his contract.
    It's in 2010, though, that made me personally really remember Vick's time with the Eagles. Sitting at a record of 9-4, the Eagles travelled to New Jersey in a Week 15 divisional matchup with the also 9-4 New York Giants. The Eagles performed in a lackluster manner through most of the game to say the least, and by halfway through the 4th quarter, they trailed the Giants by 21 points. By most accounts, this was a game that was a done deal.
    Not for Vick though.
    Vick did the equivalent of swapping out what would have been in 2010 the modern PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and wiping the dust off of his old PlayStation 2 and original Xbox. He then proceeded to do the equivalent of booting up Madden NFL 2004, and play as himself against the real life New York Giants for the final 7 minutes, 28 seconds of play.
    In what has been dubbed as the "Miracle at the New Meadowlands," Vick led the Eagles to score 28 points in not even half of a quarter, with a scramble ability and athleticism that would later remind me of Carson Wentz during the Eagle's 2017 season, which would culminate in the team's first Super Bowl win. Hanging onto that thread of the 2017 Eagles ever so briefly more, during his later time in Philadelphia, Vick would share the quarterback room in 2012 and 2013 with Nick Foles, the Super Bowl 52 MVP, during his first stint in Philly.
    The idea that Vick potentially influenced Foles in his early career and his athleticism would be reflected in Wentz, always makes me think positively of Vick as an Eagles fan. I'm glad that the team gave him that second chance after his sentence, and I think that it goes to show just how much a second chance to a repentant man can mean not only to him, but to the community around him.

But no, blame his "upbringing" for being a horrible human being decades after he escaped that life. I've been a die-hard Falcons fan my entire life but I'm never forgiving Vick. Absolutely despicable, unforgivable actions. It blows my mind that people act like he did nothing wrong. I love this channel but I lost a lot of respect for trying to make people pity Vick WHILE HE WAS SERVING TIME for his disgusting acts. And really, using politics as a scapegoat for defending Vick? Wtf do they have to do with each other?? Smfh. No way you can read this and still forgive him;
    A report by a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) investigator provided more details on the April 2007 killings, saying that the men hung approximately three dogs “by placing a nylon cord over a 2 X 4 that was nailed to two trees located next to the big shed. They also drowned approximately three dogs by putting the dogs’ heads in a five gallon bucket of water.” They killed one dog by “slamming it to the ground several times before it died, breaking the dog’s back or neck.”
    According to a witness, the men fought their trained pit bulls with pet dogs, and they “thought it was funny to watch the pit bull dogs belonging to Bad Newz Kennels injure or kill the other dogs.” Before fights, dogs would be bathed to remove any poison or narcotic that might have been placed on them to hinder their opponents’ performance. Losing dogs sometimes died in the pit. Gambling purses were frequently in the thousands of dollars.
    Dogs who lost fights were sometimes executed:
    “In or about March of 2003, PEACE, after consulting with VICK about the losing female pit bull’s condition, executed the losing dog by wetting the dog down with water and electrocuting the animal.”

There's plenty of people from the same area as Vick who have absolutely nothing to do with dog fighting. He had a choice, he chose the bad side.
    But he absolutely deserves to be forgiven. He's paid his debt to society, he works to fix the damage he's done, and he's just another human being and we all need forgiveness. And the world would be a whole lot better if people were forgiving.

To take advantage of those creatures and brutalize them for entertainment or personal gain is one of the most despicable things I can think of. Michael Vick's mom's house was on my dad's route to work at the Norfolk Naval Base every day. He worked night shifts, so in the lead up to the draft, whenever he got off he wanted so desperately to go say something to her about Mike joining the Falcons. Obviously he never did, but on his way home from work the morning of the first day of the draft he saw her packing. She was a public school bus driver, so everyone knew that meant Mike had made it. My dad was super pumped and lo and behold, Michael Vick went from our college team to our pro team.
    He was by far our favorite player, and I think I still have my tiny Vick jersey made for 5 year old me somewhere. needless to say I didn't wear it after a while, but we've always supported him. even when he made his comeback, he was helped by Tony Dungy, one of my all time favorite coaches for finally helping Peyton get over the hump and one of the best people ever in the NFL, in my opinion, both before and after he was released. he became a better person and a better football players, and I think opinions on him show a person's true views on rehabilitation and forgiveness.

Most have said their peace on the dogfighting stuff, which we could go on and on with. Really didn't like the fluffiness regarding his play in 05-06, "not reflecting in his numbers" and insisting he worked hard but then just a quick quote... No, it was actually an incredible problem of him not working hard. He was legit coasting on athletic ability on a $100M contract while his peers were well above him. And I know they saw the interview with him and Jim Mora and he admitted again that he wasn't watching any of the tape they gave him at home. His quote was they could have put a million dollar check and he'd never see it.
    Vick was very important to Falcons history and he is why I am personally a fan of the team. But to dunk on Mora (rightfully so) and to gloss over that period of deterioration for Vick, or maybe misrepresent it, doesn't sit right with me.

      I'd say 2 years wasn't nearly enough, and I suspect he only got off that lightly cause of his money. The poor easily get 2 years for some trivial possession charge. He got 2 years for torturing animals because he thought it was amusing.

      @@frother No, he only got 2 years because he was rich and famous and they wanted to make an example out of him. Before then, dog fighting was way more common and you would get some community service hours or a slap on the wrist. I remember dog fighting happening in my neighborhood in the early 2000s.
      On top of that Vick was never the one fighting the dogs. He just allowed it to happen at his residence. I get it, a pet should be treated like family if you bring it into your home but you people care more about dogs than you care about humans suffering all over the world. It's ridiculous

    Why are you guys talking about Vick like "oh my god poor Vick! The world just won't forgive him!" What are you talking about? Everyone stopped giving a shit by like 2010. He went to play for the eagles.

    Your coverage of the animal cruelty portion of Vick's story is disappointingly biased. You gloss over the atrocities that he committed in 30 seconds before spending 4 minutes rationalizing it. The fact that he grew up dog fighting almost makes it worse because it means he was doing it for years. I'm also confused that you really want me to feel sorry for him because he had a mental breakdown in prison (aka a "dungeon" as you emotionally put it). American prison reform needs to happen but we're talking about dog fighting. Same with the hand wavey dates. We're not talking about those, we're talking about Micheal Vick being a dog fighter. To me, it isn't about forgiveness because his crimes didn't personally affect me. I don't care about some "debt to society". I hate him because he tortured those animals. Nothing he does can erase that. I respect that he's worked to better himself but he'll always have the mark of dog fighting.

      I grew up around racist white dudes in the rural south. I didn't grow up with the racism. Even as a child I could identify how wrong and stupid that is. Same for dog fighting, or for drowning or electrocuting dogs.
