Well, this is the second GMT Master 2 I've reviewed, and as much as I like the watch, in theory, the practice is a little different. I say again, this is not a fake watch, so the other conclusion is that Rolex is slipping. They are all hype these days and the watch you receive after handing over that vast sum of money does fully justify the price tag. But you all knew that, right? Cheers, Jody

If it's your first GMT, don't expect a GMT bezel to be as crisp as a diver. It's more indents than clicks. It does float up slightly as you turn to the indents but mine doesn't play up and down or forward and back at rest and lines up pretty much perfect. The rotor is audible but not at all noisy. No real play in the end link at the watch face. Thank goodness. I would have been very annoyed. Thanks for the heads up. I inspected the hell out of it before leaving the shop. Cheers guys.

Well, the reason is simple enough. Rolex spent massive amounts on establishing themselves as the superior luxury brand during the 70's and 80's. Us who grew up in those decades were brought up to believe that a Rolex could keep perfect time while being contained inside a rally car tire through the Paris-Dakar. The amount of people from those generations who are now pretentious deuce bags is enough for a solid customer base and they could never possibly think of anything else to buy than the by far most recognizable "luxury" item!

And this is exactly why I do not own a Rolex. Regardless of what the “economic” value a bunch of deranged strangers place on these. I simply cannot internally justify the cost of these things. I have a couple Tudors, a couple of Omegas, a Seiko Sarb line and a Citizen Grand Classic line. None of them are cheap watches and none have that kind of obvious and easily avoidable flaw. The tudors were a bit of a trick to obtain.. the others were fairly easy to get without the expense and the ass-kissing required by the Rolex AD. The value proposition simply is not there for me.

Also, I've always thought 904L was harder and more resistant to acids than 316L (making it more costly to machine watches out of, which might explain a portion of Rolex's higher prices?). Its not like rolex makes 2000 pieces a year, the make over half a million. Its a glorified seiko in some respects and I'd argue you get more for ypur you money from seiko in both quality and construction, especially at the marine master level, on into grand Seiko. If Rolex doesn't watch out Tudor will supplant them in the hierarchy. You are getting the same watch for 1/2 price or less.

"Worth" is very subjective, I don't ever dispute they're a great watch but for 20k GBP I could get the whole Omega '57 Trilogy set in the box. I'm not a Rolex fanboi but I get why people want Rolex, just categorically isn't for me, I'd rather have an AP, Patek or even just a JLC. EDIT: just a Grand Seiko to be honest.
I'm certain 95% of the watches Jody has reviewed over the years could be purchased for the cost of this watch.

By coincidence, I was wearing my ancient Invicta pro-diver when the thumbnail for this video came up. My watch has fewer QC issues than the Rolex. Someday, I'd like a Rolex anyway, but since I have to wait anyway, I don't mind wearing an homage.

Wonderful review. This is the kind of critical commentary I am looking for as a potential buyer.

I totally agree with you Jody. What profit margins are they working on I wonder. If people only knew they probably wouldn't buy them. It's all a game really and one day everyone will wake up and smell the coffee. 🤔

AND, consider that Rolex is a Charity and pays virtually zero taxes!

All watches manufactures work on profits with many using slave labour components from China.

Unfortunately there’s always a new batch of new money posers to buy up everything Rolex spits out; many probably think there’s a battery inside.
Short of a long worldwide recession or world war, Rolex will be fine.

have to be honest that with solid caseback watches i kind of like having the rotor noise! its just a little quirk for me to feel like im "waking up" my watch so to speak

I'd heard the rotor on the new 32xx movements was really loud in comparison to the 3135 for example. My Sub's movement was the only one I never ever heard, which made me think Rolex had something over the other brands in that respect. Feeling and hearing a rotor on anything over a few hundred pounds is poor.

After watching the video I dug out my Rolex GMT bought in October 2012 and it has none of the defects mentioned. Looks like quality control was better back then or Rolex were actually caring about producing a superior watch.

Rolex stainless sports models are all gorgeous. You just have to hold the watch to appreciate the substance. I do not wish to own a Rolex as it would freak me out to wear it as a daily... not in terms of scratching it, but rather losing it or being mugged for it. I own a Tudor and that is pricy enough for me, but it does not stop me from admiring Rolex, Omega, et cetera.

If the Rolex branding was removed and you reviewed the watch objectively how much would you say it was worth?
Or more to the point, how much would you pay?

Exactly a point I have made for years on a Rolex. Those that love Rolex always give Rolex a pass on all what Jodie pointed out.

Why do GMT watches come with 24 click bezels? If it works for Adelaide on GMT+9.5, why not the quarter hour zones? How hard would it be to have 48 click bezel instead?
