That is astonishing what Paul has achieved , such quality work and highlighting how people previously bodged jobs on this boat !! Well done !! Joy to watch !!
What a fantastic, informative video. Well done Paul, I would have no idea on a job like that. Mel you are a treasure keeping him going with food and drink and then getting down in the engine bay. You work well together 👍
It pays not to prejudge people and to watch them grow as you two have. Your a lovely couple who have embraced boat life and taking us on a wonderful journey with you, I thank you for that :)
That was was brilliant! My wife cheered when Paul extracted that sleeve!! - we live in Japan and she is Japanese, so for her to do that, is a rare compliment indeed!! Well done young fella!
That was quite a job that few boat owners would tackle on their own. I commend you Paul for all the effort and determination which went into this job. I also learned something . . . you have a much more modern stern gland design than I've seen . . . most boats have that rope and grease packed tube which is tightened occasionally with nuts to draw it in. Your design is much more like a crankshaft seal on a car. Well done Sir !
You have done well because you are young and fit, and have an income, i enjoy your vlogs, you have come such a long way since your first days, you are very honest!
Surely pleather 😉😉 I did laugh when P was describing pushing the shaft into the flange and wiggling it, you too are well behaved Cape Brits I assume so you weren’t being innuendoesk right😉
Took a big gamble messing around with that prop when limited time in a dry dock, That guys a legend definitely earned a beer 🍺 And your so supportive Mel 👍
Congratulations to you both. So impressed with Pauls calmness under pressure. Helped hugely by his ever supportive Mel. You have both achieved so much , you should be proud of yourselves, we are 👌🙂.
Paul, you are the man! What a save finding that incomplete bearing coolant loop. Can imagine what the fook the absence of the cooling rig would have fubared in the engine bay. Cheers for yet another must-see and LIKE vlog.
I learnt a trick yrs ago to remove the stuck outer ring of a collapsed bearing or a steel bush. A small bead of welding across the inside of the ring or down the centre of the bush shrinks the ring when it cools down. Careful not to burn through and weld them in though...keep the amps low on the welding machine.
I have thoroughly enjoyed your journey, being equally clueless about all things NB it has been fun to learn with the pair of you :) Well done spotting that stern gland bodge and fixing it :)
Great job Paul, sorry you had to do the task the hard way, a bit surprised there wasn't any equipment available from the boatyard, OXY/Acetylene to heat and expand the bearing housing and a chop saw to shorten the propshaft..either way you got there in the end..👍🍻
My Dad always said things like “ a job worth doing is worth doing well” and “ if you do the work yourself you know it’s done well and there’s no one to blame but yourself” Did your Dad say these things Paul? Your work ethic reminds me of Dad😂🤣😂. You’re a hard worker in your own right Mel, who would ever cut their mattress and put it back together, make all your own curtains, upholstery, window covers , pillow covers etc. black the boat , whatever the job needs doing. . So you’re definitely not a useless couple slogging around taking up moorings , so there Spencer😲🙄. Congratulations on completing the jobs👍🏻🙋🏼♀️
😂thanks! Hahaha we were just having some fun with Spencer’s comment😉😅 we sure have gotten so much out of doing all these jobs in many many aspects 👌🏻🙏🏻
Outstanding job well done. Unless there is something special about your set up, I'm sure there should be a flexible R&D coupling between the clamp on the end of the propshaft and the gear box. Also if you have used the old nuts on the propshaft clamp I would advise putting new nylock nuts on to prevent them coming loose which could cause the shaft to turn in the clamp damaging it. I know because that's what I ended up with. Glad to see Mel kept you fed and watered
Great Job Paul. You would have thought the engineer would have made sure the hole on the weed hatch was clear as he fitted the pipe (or not) A lot of hard work to do in a short time.
Hey guys, just a cautionary note. I too thought blacking the base plate wasn’t necessary until we dry docked this Spring at Davies Boat Yard on the G&S who have a deep dock and so access to the base plate. It was shocking to see ours and after scraping I’m glad to say our bottom is now blacked!
Hi another good vlog just thought I might say that you should fit a R&D coupling in your shaft had you had one fitted before you may have got away with not damaging the prop as they take the shock out of hitting things also mine is exactly the same boat and engine as yours and when I fitted mine the difference in noise and how much smoother the cruising is it is amazing money well spent(only takes 16mins to fit) The other thing is whoever told you that you don't have to black the bottom is wrong that is a old wives tale tale they do rot and it is always better to black the bottom if you are in a place that has the facilities to lift the boat up to get under it
Hello both, how you doing? I think your doing a great job both with the videos and life on the boat. Paul seems like a man who could put his hands to anything. The home you have is looking better week by week. Keep up the great work you are doing.... Regards from Spain, Reni 🍷🍷
What was Spencer Wilton talking about he's a wally everyone is novice at some time even him, it's taken him a couple of years to become the first class wally he is. Must be very tiring being perfect Good vlog you did a great job and can't wait for part 2 next week same place same channel. Keith
That was kind of a dumb thing for Spencer to say. We're all new the first time we do anything. I wonder how much chaos and clogged up moorings he caused. Also, Christmas idea for Paul: a pin punch set. They are used for knocking out or driving in pins, but they would have helped with bending over that tab for the propeller nut.
Hi Mel Paul, nice to see you both,I don’t know if I have said something wrong, but you never answer my comments no more ,you know how much I enjoy you blogs I think Paul is a perfectionist every thing he does it’s always first class I have enjoyed watching him do different things to the boat ,as you know I worked on different types of boats for over 40 years, I used to cut down the middle with a axe saw blade on the tug I used liquid nitrogen wow very dangerous stuff to use it freezing the bearing instantly then it shrink just pushes out ,so pleased you got the cutlass Bering out did you cut it and heat it ? Good job well done Paul ,till next time take care keep safe, John 🤷♀️👏👏👀🥂🌹😂🍺🍺
Thanks John - you could never say anything wrong to us - never worry about that. Paul heated it initially but in the end it was just a matter of taking the time to cut it. Of course as you say you know your stuff! I think Paul was chuffed but also hoping to not have to do it again any time soon. Though if he does I’m sure he’ll have an easier time after doing the installation himself! Take care John and chat soon!😎😊
What an insult to say you were clogging up mores...not like the sunken Boats and wrecks all around the system...time they were removed...love to see how you are getting on and prepared to do your own work...
Good morning guys its a bit late but do you know there is a special "Puller" made for extracting Cutless bearings. Nevermind. Paul your persistence and perserverance paid off Well done. Now youve got your nice new shiny prop its a shame you have to cover up Annabelle's jewel in that dirty canal water.Good job on the blacking too I was wondering did you have to replace any annodes.Happy cruising on your way home X
Well done yet again guys. You two certainly get ripped into all kinds of jobs whether easy or challenging. What did you reckon to the Dacrylate blacking? I used that on mine ealier this summer. Dacrylate is just down the road from where i work. Yove got me panicking by the way, ive got a Liverpool boat similar age with the same stern gland as yours with the cooling pipe ... bet you can guess what my first job will be next time i get back to the boat !!!!
Happened to notice the weed hatch, in addition to the lack of a connection hole to the bearing, did you not protect the inside of the weed hatch with a coating of blacking?
I'm sure there were challenges back in the days when horses powered narrowboats, but sometimes I wonder if it wouldn't be simpler to switch back to actual equine power.
Have heard and seen that horses have their own constant maintenance norms and their periodic maintenance challenges. Here in our little farm burg the local psychologist gal is also a horse farmer with their farm just 2 miles down the road from my home. Have volunteered at their therapeutic riding center some.
if that is a bit of the brass bearing sticking out in engine compartment ,would it not have been better to knock it out from inside ?,you got the boat in the dry dock ,how do you except water to lubricate prop shaft ,will work once in water, as weed hatch fills with water ,that is why you have a cover that has to be tightly screwed down so engine room does not flood
If it possible to ask for some advice as I have a vetus stern gland and am having trouble removing it, is it possible if we could arrange for a vid chat or something like that as we are struggling.
Hi! Sorry getting to this comment so late! Paul is away on a work shift currently so I’ll see if he’s got a moment when he gets home after this weekend if that’s not too late!✌🏻

" Bunny Chow" and " 'n Boer maak 'n plan " . Good to hear South Africans are on the cut. It is our dream to also do the narrowboat thing. Enjoy.
Howzit Tom! Hope you get to do it too one day!
The spencer who left the nasty post sounds like one of those owners who you avoid being anywhere near, mr perfection and know all and a prize pillock.
Great come-back to Spencer Wilton. Rolling up your sleeves and doing the jobs yourselves carries a lot of kudos.
😎👍🏻just having some fun with the silly things people say! 😉thanks so much!🙌🏻
Well done Mel and Paul, great to see the confident way you both tackle the maintenance jobs and Paul your boerer plans werk lakker.
