    I bought the Caribou as soon as it was released and love it. I live in Australia and was used to RAAF displaying this aircraft. It is my type of aircraft and is very rugged. I have had the chance to look all around these aircraft many times. I have worked on fighters, transport, Photo recon. small freighters and at 73 still doing maintenance and repairs on light aircraft part-time. Love MSFS what a huge jump from FSX. I have downloaded as many RAAF Caribou repaints as I can. Keep up your lay-back style of reviews I like them. Thank you.

    That honker was designed for exactly that sort of landing. If you had used the stol speed indicator you would have used even less runway!!!!!! The Caribou was the plane that many in our armed forces swore by in tight situations. Bloody loverly video AV!!!!

    Good stuff as always Av. The point of that gauge under the glare shield with the fast/slow on it is to guide you to an optimum approach speed for short landings. There's a diamond and either a circle or triangle on it (I don't recall which). Depending on your all up weight you put the needle on either the diamond or other symbol (the placard below tells you what weight you would select which) and that's you're ideal final approach speed if you're trying to nail your landings as short as possible. I guess the idea is with it under the glare shield it's still in view while focusing outside, rather than having to keep glancing down at the panel, also means you don't have to think about numbers, just fast or slow.
    When you fly by it, it's really pretty surprising just how slow you can bring her in on the approach, I think it's somewhere around 65-70kts, really helped me, just from the perspective of getting past the reluctance to get such a big aircraft that slow lol.

    • @Wolf_Sim.Actual

      It varies with weight of course, but at the lightest weights and Flap 40, the Vref gets down to 54kts.

    @12:00, the explanation of the gull wing and how the enhanced angle off horizontal improves lift, stably, at the wing root, was enlightening. And, the flotsam and jetsam at Gorge River is indeed cool.

    • @Wolf_Sim.Actual
      @Wolf_Sim.Actual Год назад +2

      With all respect - and not sure on the Corsair - but the ‘gull wing’ was not to provide more lift. It was designed to shorten the landing gear and keep it stronger. I do suspect the Corsair did the same thing. To clear a large prop but still have strength in the landing gear. I have a little over 1000hrs in the real airframe. (DHC-4). Out of interest, they dropped the gull wing in the DHC-5 when they installed turbo props.

    AV: "BB is dropping the Otter!"
    My initial reaction after hearing that sentence: "BY THE THRONE, NO! HOW COULD THEY CANCEL THE OTTER? ALL IS LOST!"
    Wording, eh? I'm already sitting at home with covid right now, no need to give me a heart attack, too. :p
    As for the Caribou, i'm a bit torn. Lovely aircraft, lovely visual model, of course, but...... Eh, it's as another Asobo-sponsored plane, and that means low cost, but also marginal systems depth, probably no manual and so on. Not much to really sink your teeth into. I feel I've already bought too many planes like that; Planes that i'll fly literally a couple of times before i go back to something with full-depth systems that cost twice as much. There's just more to get into and even learn from, there.
    So now i think i'll just get the truly shiny stuff when it comes out and save my money in the meantime. Call me a snob if you will.^^
    Oh, and there's the fact it's only on the Marketplace, with which i am now completely done. Risking numerous transaction errors just so you can wait months for updates is just no fun.
    Gotta say though that NZ scenery is absolutely lovely!

    A quick note on some of the side-info you gave: the first version of the Paramount mountain was inspired by Ben Lomond Mountain in Utah. It was later updated to resemble Artesonraju in Peru. The opening scene in Raiders was filmed in Hawaii, not New Zealand. So, as impressive as Mitre Peak is, it didn't have anything to do with Paramount or Raiders.
    Keep up the good work!

      Ok, I meant until later another day... life, eh? 😂
      The short field approach gauge is just an alternate asi, uncluttered by irrelevant info and positioned up high to maintain good peripheral view of the field. The two individual marks to the left of centre mark the approach speed, depending on weight. It feels really (REALLY!) 'wrong' coming in that slow, which is probably why you 'need' constant confirmation like that
      As for the haters, I assumed you were a real-world GA pilot before I ever heard you mention it from your understanding of basic aviation concepts, and from your ability to translate that to more complex aircraft and systems you readily admit to having no experience of. But what would I know? I used a weather preset once in a sim and have even been known to spawn on the runway when leisure time is limited, so I'm not a (former) real-world pilot either.

    • @AvAngel
      @AvAngel  Год назад +1

      I use weather presets all the time to fly in different conditions, its fun :D
      And yes I am, I don't ever pretend to be an expert, and I also have to play the 'youtube game' of making sure things stay entertaining and that means somethings cutting some corners in the name of the video.

    A little bit more info about the fast/slow indicator, or as DHC call it the 'short field approach speed indicator'. It's driven by the stall warning system (specifically the right side lift computer, looking at the right side lift transducer vane aka angle of attack vane) and shows you how close to stalling you are. Because it's driven by the stall warning system the weather and altitude and aircraft weight are irrelevant, all it cares about is attitude and airflow over the wings. It is calibrated to work on the final approach phase of a flaps 40 landing, and it does exactly what it says on the tin - FAST means you're going to waste runway, the triangle means you're doing it right in the real world, SLOW means you're doing it right in the sim :) The stick shaker should kick in about when the needle gets to the L in SLOW at flaps 40. ObDisclaimer - this is real world info taken from DHC-4 service manuals, I haven't tested any of this in the sim to see if it actually works, although it looked like it worked pretty well in that second landing, even though I'm not sure you were looking at it LOL :)

    • @Wolf_Sim.Actual
      @Wolf_Sim.Actual Год назад +1

      Light stick shakers come on at 8kts above the stall. Heavy stick shakers at 4kts above. You can see the motors on the back of the yokes - an eccentric weight spins on the end of electric motors.
      Not modeled as yet, but I suspect it will be in an update. Certainly the switch to test the stick shakers functions.

    Hello,
    This plane is absolutly unrealistic. 10s from cold & dark to ready for taxiing. They could have done something great, they didn't. With some planes like the Beaver you need to follow correctly the check-list to start the engine, with some you also need to warm-up or your engine will break (Wilga), but with this big plane what do you need ? power, magnetos, start engines, start alternators and lets go to the runway. frustrating.

    • @AvAngel
      @AvAngel  Год назад

      I mean it’s the same as most default aircraft even the beaver can be started with fuel mags start. They don’t make the famous fliers that deep for a reason , realistic? No but you can follow the checklists and do it right, most stock planes let you be unrealistic even the dc3 minus the realism mod

      Enjoy the simulator, I just got the carabou and love flying it. I don't hop in it when I am in a systems nerd mode as it really isn't for that.
