Rob, your video on creating channels for people over 40 was fantastic! I highly recommend continuing this series. From my experience, those over 40 often struggle with the tools and equipment needed to create RUclips videos, making it hard to stay consistent. Keep up the great work!

I like a RUclipsr to produce a good quality video, a decent one. I will admit I don't like a RUclipsr to edit or do heavy editing. If a RUclipsr yawns or sneeze as long as they say excuse me. I'm good. If a fly or bug is in the room and the RUclipsr fans it away or says shoo fly, they doesn't bother me at all. Not at all. There is a RUclipsr I like who does not do heavy editing. If she needs to get some water, you can see her walking to the refrigerator to get it. She'll take some sips, sit back down and say something like, whew! I am so thirsty. I needed that. If her doorbell rings guess what. She answers it. We may not see who it is at her door but she answers it. She has a very successful channel. It continues to grow. If a video isn't edited or heavily edited, it looks decent and presented neatly and is good content I'll like it. That's my opinion on video editing. I'm enjoying your over 40 content a lot.
      Please keep it coming.

I love the bloopers. I think it’s so important for people who want to create content, to see this. It lets us all know that we all go through this part, and not to let it stop you from creating. I also agree with and push the subject of “just start”. Spending too much time prepping and not enough time uploading is such a set back. Excellent job with the videos Rob!

Hey Rob! Thanks for that video. I can completely feel with you. I have a new channel and just got 1000 subs and I start over again and again, when I say hello to the folks. But I noticed, that you have to stand up for every take. I would recommend my setting: I use Ecamm Live, a Sony cam, a boom mic and a iPhone and you can plug everything in your Mac. In Ecamm Live you can switch between the cameras with a Steamdeck and even start and stop videos. So you could easily sit in your chair, start a recording with a button, switch to the iPhone while recording and even start and stop recording - without leaving your chair! All your takes will be saved on the Mac in a folder (and the audio is included already in the movie file!). That’s what makes it super-easy for me to do videos. I just have to fight with motivation and fear of being a bad youtuber. :D If you need more information about my setup: let me know. I would be glad to help. Have a great one! Jens

    • @RobtheMaritimer

I actually had my audio and video recording the whole time :-) But great ideas with Ecamm and the audio! I use Ecamm Live during my weekly live stream on Tuesdays... love the software! Cheers :-)

Hi Rob, I just discovered your channel thanks to this "start youtube over 40"-series and I really appreciate it! I started my youtube-channel a couple of years ago when I started to play music again after almost 20 years of not playing anything. I really stuggle with stage fright as a musician and hated the sound of my own voice. I decided to start recording videos as a way to force myself to face this issue and publish it despite all the anxiety it came with. And with the hope of being able to see some improvement over time, as you mentioned in one of these videos. My first songs are really awful and cringe to watch, but it is fun to compare with some of the newer ones.
But there is one hurdle that I still haven't jumped over and that is speaking videos, to just talk to the camera. This feels even worse than singing, and with the added challenge that it would make sense to do it in English and that is my third language so it adds another layer of cringe... (my first language, Swedish, would really limit the potential reach) :)
But there has been an idea of doing some speaking videos too, I just need to jump in and do it. Maybe some behind the scenes or music studio related topics, just to get started. Your series inspired me to give it a go, now I just need to face it head on and do it!

Speaking to a camera is something that most people find very uncomfortable... it's really hard until you get used to it! I can only imagine how much harder it must be if you want to make English videos but that isn't your first language. You should check out Peter Lindgren's RUclips channel... he's from Sweden and English is not his first language either and he's grown a very large channel of over 600k subscribers. He sometimes stumbles over English words and will then launch into something in Sweden which only Swedish speaking people would understand... but he does it in a humorous way! Anyways... thought you might like to see how someone else handles that :-)

@@RobtheMaritimer Thanks, I will check him out. There are of course a lot of us Scandinavians who make content in English (in our own strange languages, we would be very isolated), and generally speaking we are used to speaking at least one other foreign language. But it is like you get another personality with another language. I am not the same in Swedish as in my second language Spanish or English. So it is hard to achieve the same autenticity. But of course, a lot of content creators also adopt a "persona" even in their native language, some very successfully and others less so...

I’m certain many viewers felt the same during that specific process. We know we just need to have a bullet point script, but being in front of a camera knowing what you’re putting out tends to be most challenging. Hi Rob, Subscribed for sure. There is so much value in someone close to your own age teaching or showing us all this vs. trying to understand the teachings of younger folks who were born into the youtube/tech world. (Seems like they just assume you know all the lingo and start their "beginner tutorials" at a point beyond what I know.) I would like if you made a video of what moves you actually make in your (DAW) to adjust or fine-tune your audio(compression, EQ, Reverb or stereo delay) and video editing as well. I am trying to work with Final Cut Pro for video and Logic Pro for Audio. I am an Apple guy. But I've heard that most DAW's have similar features. I am just on the trial versions, but would love to see you go through the moves on how you do yours. Thanks for sharing! Great video!

From a camera nerd, for clarity… for shallow depth of field, it’s “large aperture” not to be confused with “wide angle”.
Ideally, you want to use a “longer” lens / zoom more and place the camera 6-12’ from you to be most aesthetically pleasing (doesn’t make your nose large, etc.). It also narrows how much background is in view.
Achieving both of the above is not a cheap lens, so there are trade offs.
Another simple tip… use the lens hood. It improves your image quality by blocking stray light.
    Thanks for your videos!

@@RobtheMaritimer Wide angle / closer lens does also contribute to making depth of field shallower, but has tradeoffs with image distortion from needing to be physically so close. (Conversely, a longer lens avoids the distortion, but it’s not so easy/cheap to get the same low f/ value.)

Great video, thanks for sharing I appreciate that. Just a small observation: I know you said you are a new user of cameras and so am I, but the millimeter value (mm) tells how wide the angle of the lens is(called focal length) , now, the ‘f’ number (f2.8 and so on) tells how wide the aperture can open (the opening for the light to come into the camera sensor) and this is what makes the image more or less blury and blurs the background.
This is what I understand to be true - you could always double check as I’m no authority on camera.

@@RobtheMaritimer that’s interesting. I certainly have had that problem doing a podcast for somebody else. So I did a little research and it does happen. It maybe it depends upon the exact model of the camera. Or maybe the temperature inside your space? Or maybe even the resolution you are recording at. But anyway, devices with these kinds of batteries will frequently overheat if used continuously. So will your phone.

    • @RobtheMaritimer
      @RobtheMaritimer  2 месяца назад

@@Dave_Outside I remember reading/watching that some models before the a6400 had that problem... maybe the a6000? a6600? The higher the f-stop number, the smaller the aperture, which means less light enters the camera. The lower the f-stop number, the larger the aperture, and the more light enters the camera. So, f/1.4 means the aperture is pretty much all the way open, and lots of light is entering the camera. Also, with a lower number the depth of field - the area in focus is less - narrower - so you can achieve that ‘blurry’ background. It’s not necessarily a wide angle lens as you could have a 400mm lens with a low f-stop. As always - great videos, you're really putting yourself out there.
