The Realm of Shadows is not in Mequella’s head. It is a new land according to Myazaki. The Shadow Realm is where Merika went when she was Empyrean and this is the land where she became a god. Mequella is following her footsteps. To what end we don’t know yet . But he called the Tarnished here via the egg because we are somehow key to whatever it is he has planned.(probably to yeet Messmer the Impaler) There are suppose to be others (NPCs) from the Lands Between that journey here as well tracing Mequella’s steps and we are suppose to ineract with them and they will give us the lore of the lands, Mequella’s possible intentions and what Merika was up to here when she became a god…Or try to kill us. Yes and no. In the interview Myazaki dropped a day ago he said GRRM wasn’t involved in writing anything new for the DLC. What he did was write so much character lore and character interactions that they couldn’t fit everything in the base game and so what was left out to further flesh out the lore was utilized here in the DLC. In other words the lore for most of the DLC and its characters was already penned by GRRM during the launch of the base game.
I'm hyped mostly because they took like 4 years release a DLC most studios don't spend this much on even a Expansion, let alone DLC(I know for Fromsoftware a DLC is basically as big as a legit game expansion)

There's no real over-arching plot - it's a game full of lore like playing DnD. And that's fine, there's nothing really wrong with that. I just prefer games that have an actual story to them or a character-driven narrative. I couldn't sympathize with any of the characters dying because they all had pretty much the same personality, or rather lack-of. The combat was fun as hell, so I don't think the game is bad. But I think it's just considered "10/10" when compared to all the other garbage coming out lately. 🤷♂

Using the games method of storytelling as a fault against its high status because it doesn't fit into the traditional mode of tell all linear storytelling seems like missing the point of different methods of writing or game design. Not to mention the changes needed to fit properly into an open world game which causes all types of problems when talking about linear storytelling.

Miyazaki said in an interview that there will be 8 new weapon types. Not just weapons, weapon TYPES. With the kicks in the trailer I'm guessing at least one will be a more hand to hand one, unless that's just a new Ash of War for fists or something. Though if kick weapons are added I wonder if they'd redo Niall's prosthetic to be a proper kick weapon.
also voosh is right. I never liked the argument that fromsoft is discriminatory because they don't have difficulty sliders. you can literally play any other game. I mean I'm all for making games easier to access for disabled people, but just because you fucking suck at dark souls doesn't mean you are entitled to just have an easier difficulty given to you. I do think there is a problem with people not realizing that not everything needs to be for them just because other people enjoy it. It's more of a consumerist identity kind of thing. I dont see a reason for all games to not have a difficulty setting. Whats easy for some may he hard for others. I never liked the gatekeepy mentality around fromsoft games especially. I have yet to see a legitamate reason to not have a difficulty slider at all besides "it will ruin my experience if other people can have fun while playing an easier version cause of my fragile ego". Finished god of war ragnarok yesterday. The ending was everything I expected and was satisfying, but there were multiple places throughout the later part of the story where there could have been a player choice no matter how superficial.

There is no celestial rule that say a game can’t have cutscenes or QTE, if you don’t like cutscene just don’t buy game with cutscene. There are many cutscene heavy games that are really good (TLOU, god of war, uncharted)
The problem I keep coming up against when playing Souls-likes, including from FromSoftware is that I have played DS1 and keep thinking "I could be playing DS1 instead of this". Anyone else have this issue or is it just me?

You absolutely overestimate the average person. The vast majority of people are completely ignorant of most things and half the people are below average intelligence. There is no level of dumb where you don't have a large number of people completely miss the point. Helldivers is aggressively riffing on Starship Troopers, giving you an orgy of evidence that you are a victim of very, very bad propaganda that plays on your vanity and readiness to accept a narrative that makes you the hero. The truth is, you don't get a ship to command. You are just one guy in an enormous reservoir of frozen guys on your ship that get thawed as needed and shot into battle. The supposedly elite training is super barebones controls and not nearly enough to be ready for an actual fight. You just run through a course that obviously gets used a hundred times a day. You get instructed by a canned voice and automated systems, handed a cape like it's a big deal, then shuffled into a pod on a rocket full of pods and loaded into a ship. The resources of Super Earth are basically endless, but all you get is rationed out subject to approval. You are a glorified grunt in a sick joke of warfare. And the gamers (tm) don't get it.

I finally started and am like 20 hours in and gotta say... so far its felt way overhyped. It's not bad by any means but its not blowing my mind. Bloodborne is still the magnum opus imo
Yeah. I dont really like the openworld stuff that much but then having the freedom to do more or less whatever you want makes entering a "legacy dungeon" an even bigger pain in the ass. The gear you find at the start is pretty mid. Also, a lot of the "bosses" you find in minor dungeons lack the design and difficult you would expect from a Fromsoft game. I think the game improves a lot in the second half, after you reach Leyndell.
I feel like I’m being a downer, but honestly I’m not that excited about this. Like if this has released 9-12 months ago I’d be freaking out. But idk, this game came out like 2 years ago, the hype around it has died off, and I’ve moved on from it. I’m still gonna play this and enjoy it. I’m sure it will be great. But I feel it’s been too long since the game came out for me to care as much as I normally would. For reference, the souls-like FromSoft GAMES (demon souls, dark souls, bloodborne, Sekiro, Elden Ring) usually come out 2-3 years apart. I’m sure this will be a big expansion, but it’s still just gonna be an expansion, from the info we have on it it’s not going to be anywhere near a full fledged game or ER sequel, yet it’s releasing almost as long after ER as we would normally expect a full new game from them. Miyazaki said in an interview that there will be 8 new weapon types. Not just weapons, weapon TYPES. With the kicks in the trailer I'm guessing at least one will be a more hand to hand one, unless that's just a new Ash of War for fists or something.

also voosh is right. I never liked the argument that fromsoft is discriminatory because they don't have difficulty sliders. you can literally play any other game. I mean I'm all for making games easier to access for disabled people, but just because you fucking suck at dark souls doesn't mean you are entitled to just have an easier difficulty given to you. I do think there is a problem with people not realizing that not everything needs to be for them just because other people enjoy it. It's more of a consumerist identity kind of thing. I think it is a mostly capitalist phenomenon.
I dont see a reason for all games to not have a difficulty setting. Whats easy for some may he hard for others. I never liked the gatekeepy mentality around fromsoft games especially. I have yet to see a legitamate reason to not have a difficulty slider at all besides "it will ruin my experience if other people can have fun while playing an easier version cause of my fragile ego". Thats what it always boils down to in those arguments

Finished god of war ragnarok yesterday. The ending was everything I expected and was satisfying, but there were multiple places throughout the later part of the story where there could have been a player choice no matter how superficial.

Emphasis on cutscenes is poison for games, almost up there with QTEs
There is no celestial rule that say a game can’t have cutscenes or QTE, if you don’t like cutscene just don’t buy game with cutscene.
There are many cutscene heavy games that are really good (TLOU, god of war, uncharted)

The problem I keep coming up against when playing Souls-likes, including from FromSoftware is that I have played DS1 and keep thinking "I could be playing DS1 instead of this". Anyone else have this issue or is it just me?
I can't think of a reason to replay ds1 over the other ones, other than nostalgia. Maybe it's your comfort game and that's fine.

You are just one guy in an enormous reservoir of frozen guys on your ship that get thawed as needed and shot into battle.
The supposedly elite training is super barebones controls and not nearly enough to be ready for an actual fight.
You just run through a course that obviously gets used a hundred times a day. You get instructed by a canned voice and automated systems, handed a cape like it's a big deal, then shuffled into a pod on a rocket full of pods and loaded into a ship.
The resources of Super Earth are basically endless, but all you get is rationed out subject to approval.

I finally started and am like 20 hours in and gotta say... so far its felt way overhyped. It's not bad by any means but its not blowing my mind. Bloodborne is still the magnum opus imo
Yeah. I dont really like the openworld stuff that much but then having the freedom to do more or less whatever you want makes entering a "legacy dungeon" an even bigger pain in the ass. The gear you find at the start is pretty mid. Also, a lot of the "bosses" you find in minor dungeons lack the design and difficult you would expect from a Fromsoft game. I think the game improves a lot in the second half, after you reach Leyndell.
Elden Ring is straight up the most overrated video game I’ve ever played.
I feel like I’m being a downer, but honestly I’m not that excited about this. Like if this has released 9-12 months ago I’d be freaking out. But idk, this game came out like 2 years ago, the hype around it has died off, and I’ve moved on from it. I’m still gonna play this and enjoy it. I’m sure it will be great. But I feel it’s been too long since the game came out for me to care as much as I normally would.
For reference, the souls-like FromSoft GAMES (demon souls, dark souls, bloodborne, Sekiro, Elden Ring) usually come out 2-3 years apart. I’m sure this will be a big expansion, but it’s still just gonna be an expansion, from the info we have on it it’s not going to be anywhere near a full fledged game or ER sequel, yet it’s releasing almost as long after ER as we would normally expect a full new game from them. That just hurts my excitement for it. We’ve waited like 75-80% of the time it would take to get a full new game or sequel, just to get what generously will probably be about 40-50% the content of ER itself.

It's not a sequel to Elden Ring, it's an expansion, and nothing about the info we have been given indicates it is even approaching the scale of a full game. Also idk if you forgot when ER came out, but it's been over 2 years since ER came out, and this DLC will be releasing 2 1/2 years after ER came out. So no idea where you got in your head the time scale of less than one year.

Limgrave is only about 1/6th of ER as a whole. So even generously assuming what "bigger and more dense" means, that's still only 1/5th of ER. Map size is not a good metric for content, you wouldn't use the fact that DS2 has the Frozen Outskirts as an area as an argument that it has way more content than the other games. Likewise DS3 has 18 full unique bosses. Whereas ER has a bad history of counting repeat bosses as main bosses, you fight a variant of Margit 3 separate times.

Yeah if I showed someone the trailer for The Old Hunters, or The Ringed City, they'd also think it was a full game. Nothing we were shown shows a scale beyond what a single area in ER already has. And every trailer for every FromSoft game shows many different bosses.
