God, one thing that's annoying about the Z-axis that stumped me for the longest time: by default Harmony sets to 3D paths. It's definitely something you should change to separate (xyz instead of 3D path) for defaults. Otherwise, easing means that if you have z movement, it'll try to compensate which can result in stuff shifting forward and back as it oscillates into position, even when you ease what looks like just perpendicular movement. AE actually has the same problem, ironically.
This is an important point. I did an hour long deep dive on 3D paths and separates a few years ago. But it’s such a niche within niche topic that it’s views are still super low. So I think I lot of people who would benefit from that information have unfortunately missed it
that "short alt+up/down" WAS ALL I NEEDED AND COULDNT FIND IT ANYWHERE!!!! Thank you onion skin, i've been sharing all of your videos to my college discord server. SO HELPFUL!
Thank you so much for this! I knew about the z-axis, but I didn't realize the alt + arrows was a shortcut for it. Now I can do that rather than zooming in far on the top view and dragging, or - what I've been doing lately - manually going into the layer settings and typing in an infinitesimally small amount as an adjustment.
I'm using Toon Boom Harmony 21 and, for whatever reason, the alt+up thing doesn't seem to be working. I realize I'm trying to do a lot for my character turnaround, but I'm hoping the characters nostril can change z positions when the head begins to turn, so it can be hidden by the tip of the nose. Whenever I try to alt+up, it moves the nostril up on the y axis. I want I'll keep looking for other solutions, but I was wondering if this was something I'm doing wrong.
Getting super frustrated... Alt Up/Down doesn't work on my toonboom. And yes, I am in the drawing/camera panel. worked fine in the Trail version of Premium but I can't afford that. Essentials seems to be buggy af
Weirdest thing, this suddenly wouldn't work in a project I exported from Storyboard pro to harmony Premium (both v22). Couldn't see any differences in the layouts or settings, though for some reason colour space wasn't selectable so I think there was a connection somewhere. I tried it on a fresh scene and it still works, but when I use Z-axis changes on the layers in the primary project it just makes it zoom from a point rather than go in front of another layer. Edit: solved it. Composite was set to 2d and changing it to 3d flat or 3d enabled z-nudge again.
@@OnionSkin I was wondering that. Maybe it had something to do with it being directly exported from storyboard pro? I'll check the other scenes and see if they're in the same situation.
well, i got some errors(?) where the object is on an hiigher z space but on opengl view still shows behind the object that is below the z space if changes to render view and perspective view, it shows normally as the config should be

thank you, that worked so much better then going through 1000 nodes trying to see where the builder put underlays and things.

You've saved my life, sir
5am before the deadline?
this was a really cool video! z space is interesting and this was a great use of it.
You, sir, are my savior.
Thank you very very much!!!⚡🙏🏼
You are the god of toon boom ❤️
A short answer in the first 5 seconds. Woah
this is what I exactly searching for
thank you, its just what I was looking for!
2:36 I FIXED THIS when I'm having trouble with Atl + up/down !!!
YOU'RE THE GOD OF TOON BOOOOOM \^^/

that will really help.

do you make sure the things has a peg?
With great Z depth. Comes great responsibility.

Glad you solved it! 3D flat is the default so I wonder how it got changed?

@@OnionSkin Ah yup, every scene exported had it set to 2D by default. Weird.

Sounds like a composite issue. Make sure all your composites are set to pass through!
@@OnionSkin unfortunately, they are
Email me some screenshots and I’ll see if I can’t figure out what’s going on
Can you apply this to pegs?
I kinda wish this was possible with normal drawings and not just rigs or with pivots
It is! If you're working frame by frame or on a single layer shapes are nudged forwards and backwards with CTRL+Up and Down.
or
Right Click > Arrange
ah ok, gonna try but might get a bit lost on it@@OnionSkin
is there a way of doing for the same layer, let's say I copied something of a previous frame but wanted behind the next one.@@OnionSkin
👍
COLIN. HOW YOU DARE PUT KEYFRAMES ON YOUR DRAWING LAYERS!!!
TRIGGGGEEEEEEREEEEEEED
Just you wait till the IK video
@@OnionSkin you wouldn't DARE
i'll give you some shade for putting kf on your DRAWING LAYERS just you wait till MY next vid kicks in !
I mean, I agree that key frames are for pegs. But sure, fight me lol
