Susei is really the epitome of being a self made talent. When she started V-Tubing she not only created her own avatar (drew, rigged and animated it) but it's remained basically the same and she's the *only* Vtuber to come into Hololive as an independent Vtuber to keep their model. She literally made herself into a Star via hard work, talent and determination. Like others have said she just got back a couple months ago from Throat Surgery and beyond all of this she's one of the finest Tetris competitive players in the world. An amazing person all around.
@@Loczek531 they aren't wrong, Suisei is able to stand her ground in Tetris matches against strong players, search her Tetris moments up, they won't disappoint you.
@@Loczek531 not really exaggerated. I don't dare admit she's one of the best but with a record of standing against the second best player for five minutes it's an impressive feat.
Just to point this out, becuase I find it very interesting: Suisei made a Twitter Space after this video went online and told her experience and behind the scene for this take. Yes, she did it in one take (that's the rule of that studio room) and she was nervious, but because she was the first VTuber appearing on The First Take, so she was thinking that if she screwed up here, she would be screwing up for every one else. One thing to note is that the staff and her manager, during the meeting, suggested to Suisei to not do an introduction and warm up like others and just go for the singing, since there were people who didn't know about VTubers and others that doesn't like VTubers in general, they suggested to blow them away with her singing. This worked out perfectly, she blow them away and after some initial negative comments, after she began to sing, no one was saying anything.
良い説明をありがとう。 私もあなたのように伝えたかったが、私の英語力では不十分だった。 (DeepL translation)Thanks for the good explanation. I wanted to tell them as you did, but my English was not good enough.
@@kamodomon0913 Thank you my brother. I did not know about Suisei saying this. I did know she faced criticism from some shallow minded people that easily dismiss things out of hand without giving them a chance. She deserves all the recognition in the world. I have tears in my eyes everytime I hear her sing. She is amazing.
Thank you for saying this. I did not know about this twitter space for Suisei. in context, the pressure must have been immense. She fkn _smashed_ it out of the ball park tho
Considering Suisei announced that she would be taking a 1.5-month break from streaming to undergo a throat surgery in September and returned to her activities with a live concert in November is truly admirable. So much hard work, passion and talent among the hololive members.
Yeah, she didnt even take a proper break. She released an original song right after returning from her break, and you can most definitely hear her lack of breath and slightly rough voice. But it seems that her voice fully recovered here, so thats good.
To further expand on this, her natural vocal range used to be quite much higher than it is post-op. However, the vocal stability, overall tone quality, and range has not really changed.
for detail on this: the surgery is just a small operation that the doctor said it won't affect her voice after fully recovering, but she did indeed take 1,5 month off and need some rehab later due to having to completely silence for 2 weeks. The one that really affect Suisei voice is about at the end of 2021, she has to change her streaming voice tone due to constantly speaking in high pitch for years (for cutesy impression, a lot of vtuber do this) did some damage to her throat. After that she using a more stable and lower voice to not hurt her throat anymore.
Honestly, Suisei being THE FIRST V-tuber to ever make it onto "The First Take" is something to take note of. Not only has this V-tuber been through hell, but she's gone from indie V-tuber, to Hololive super star in just a matter of 3 YEASR. AND THE FACT SHE DID THIS AFTER HAVING THROAT SURGERY A MONTH BEFORE THE PERFORMANCE!!! She has definitely earned earned the respect of every musician and V-tuber in the world.
thank you for your reactions and opinions, sometimes it's enough for us to just enjoy the artist's song behind the avatar without having to judge their original appearance
Probably another interesting thing about her is that she's entirely self-taught, even until now. According to herself and other vtubers around her, she's a very instinctual person. She can't really explain how she does it most of the times. Her training method basically consist of recording her own singing, listening to it, and then experimenting / tweaking a few parts to her own liking, record it again, tweak it again, rinse and repeat until she's satisfied with the result.
She's the same way with everything else too. She just has an ability to pick things up really well, and then she practices and practices until she's really good.
Three funfacts: 1. This is her performance after she stop singing (and talking) for over a month due to her throat surgery. She said she wants to postpone this video and her live concert because she worried her singing voice isn't at 100%. But due to schedule and tickets already sold she decided to go through with them. 2. Since you're curious about singer vtubers, you can also check Ayunda Risu's Alice&U. She's so good at singing but she don't have enough fund to make a lot of original or cover songs. Also she hired a vocal coach but the coach said that Ayunda pitch is amazing and she has nothing to teach Ayunda. 3. While Suisei made a ton of Original and cover songs, she also stream herself playing games, especially Tetris. She's so good at online Tetris she can go toe to toe with world's top #1, 2, 3, and 4 Tetris players.
> #1, 2, 3, and 4 Tetris players. *With handicap. But then again, she can sing, read chats, and react to chats while playing Tetris so.... impressive in other ways. I also completely forgot about her surgery. Damn, that's even more pressure lol
the surgery and timeout after was in october and she came back from that hiatus with a 3D live show in early november so no, this performance is not her "coming back" from a surgery, that was a couple months ago.
Thank you for being one of the only (if not the only) reactions that give us hoshiyomi a proper technical reaction to suisei and only lightly and very politley touch on her model herself. There are so many reactions out there that just either can't get over the vtuber model or don't believe she's even live in the studio in person, comment on it and downplay her skill because of it, instead of giving a proper analytical look at what she is bringing to the first take. Yes we get it, it's not a 3d person you're looking at, but that's not what suisei wants you to pay the majority of your attention to for her song, its the song itself. For someone who is musically inclined but not of the vocal variety (and Im sure not the only who feels this way after watching your reaction), I really hope you do another video for her next first take performance which comes out tomorrow and look forward to it.
I think you put it perfectly whats so cool about having a virtual avatar. It's only about how talented you are and looks don't really matter (or can be modified). The fact that most of the big vtubers are not only singers and dancers but are also gaming streamers who entertain thousands of people live is just... yeah they are the full entertainment package!
What a time to be alive when we're having a serious discussion about the vocal talents of a girl who the community fears as an axe-swinging Tetris God.
A bit of curiosity: the guy playing guitar here is Inoue Taku, the composer and producer for this and some other of Suisei's songs. He's also a composer for Idolm@ster, one of the biggest multimedia projects in Japan. After listening to some of Suisei's older songs, he fell in love with her voice and offered to compose a song specifically for her to sing. The result was 3時12分, translating roughly to "3:12 AM", which I personally really love. They eventually formed a two man band: Midnight Grand Orchestra and continue to work closely on their individual carreers as well.
I've been watching you since your reaction to Lisa and now I can't believe you reacted to my fav vtuber singer! She opened the path for vtubers to the mainstream and both her fans and colleagues are really proud. Vtubers are basically content creators that use avatar and some of them are pursuing their career as an artist. Suisei often streams on her channel and her contents usually playing games, live singing, or just talking.
I was trying to point out the difference haha, and now I have people jumping me in the comments. Thanks for being kind about it. Thing is I was approach by a lot of people with "singing ai on the first take" so I wanted to make sure I will point out this is not ai generated but a real human. :)
@@Katriinka in case it’s confusing, a lot of people get the idea that it’s an AI because many early vtubers had an AI theme and role played a little bit with that.
One of my favourite vocal coach reactor and one of my favourite vtuber artist. I am dreaming of this day and now it became true. Thanks for reacting to her. i hope you can continue to react to more vtubers because they also have the talent.
im really happy to see more vocal coaches analyze vsingers. for this first take video i have added 2 japanese vocal coaches to my playlist and just added Katriinka to the list. the playlist also has a dj and a pair of professional singers.
How much you were able to get out of just hearing her voice is the main point. Vtubers are/were a niche genre and they were worried about getting mainstream negativity, so her managers and her decided to not do the standard intro and just sing, to shut up the haters before they have a chance to dismiss her or lose intrest. It worked.
hoshimachi suisei, tokoyami towa and mori calliope are my favourite singing vtubers, all 3 are from cover corps hololive brand of vtubers. towa is also a japanese vtuber like suisei. highly recommending her live version of -error-, its an emotional one, i also recommend palette from her. mori is an english vtuber living in japan, she does both rap, ballads and pop music and she is the only vtuber to my knowledge signed to a major label, in her case universal music. songs from mori i would recommend are songs like Excuse My Rudeness, But Could You Please RIP? (an austrian vtuber called takanashi kiara, also from the hololive brand, makes a cameo in that song/video) and end of a life.
There are many Hidden gems in the Vtuber Industry especially when the "subculture" was just starting. Suisei started in 2018, it was a struggle back then due to low subscribers/viewership and thought multiple times about quitting but fortunately here we are with her being the first representative of Vtubers in first take. FYI, she will be back at first take in Wednesday 22:00 JST
@Cannabis Dreams As the name implies, they get singers, mainly Japanese singers, to come in and sing one of their songs while being live recorded. There is no splicing, autotune, anything. Performers get one chance and the first take gets edited and uploaded straight to the channel.
@CannabisDreams pretentious is crazy its just a chance for the artist to show themselves and their skill as naturally as they can so people can see that they really are good
Wow I'm so happy that you took time to try and understand (or maybe you already did) what a Vtuber is and not just assume she's just an anime character 😅Thanks for the reaction and her second FIRST TAKE is coming out on Wednesday too.
Glad to see a Voice Coach react to this. We've already had a ton of other people from various musical stand points react to this and from what I saw they had different critiques but most of them don't usually talk about the voice, more so a full breakdown and critique of it. That said! I believe you'll enjoy Nanashi Mumei who's also a VTuber from the same company where Suisei's from! She's from the English of Hololive so I think you'd have an easier time understanding them.
And all of that singing came from someone that has been on throat surgery september last year, this song is all her struggle manifest as she wrote the lyric but the powerful notes are request from her management. To be a declaration/warcry that Vtuber will and shall be known by general public
This is so interesting to me since I like both Vtubers and Kpop. Kpop has TONS of vocal analysis/showcases that I really enjoy and have always wished was in the Vtuber community too. Like it would actually be awesome to know Vtubers’ supported ranges and which ones uses proper technique and whatnot. Well anyways, thanks for this!
from all the reaction of suisei's stellar-stellar, i really like yours the most because you're not only just reacting like "oh she's good etc. etc.", you also explained everything so even an amateur like me can understand what she's doing on every part of the song
I like the reaction from vocal coach instead of a random reaction, because I get to see the techniques being used by the singer explained by the vocal coach. Awesome reaction and I am glad its about Sui-chan! She will appear again on The First Take channel this wednesday! :)
I've noticed a lot of times you were reacting with Suisei using strain to make it more impactful was when Suisei was singing the words "Datte boku wa hoshi dakara" (Because I am a star). It's definitely on purpose for this song since it's like a declaration, especially if you're familiar with her story. If I had to pick one song to represent Suisei, it's definitely Stellar Stellar.
I love it when Vtubers grab the attention of pros. It really helps people understand that their growth and progress isnt an accident. It also helps me put into words what i feel makes these talents appealing
I really appreciate the knowledge u showcased here about VTubers along with your analysis :) Suisei is my favorite in Hololive not only because of her singing but also her Tetris skills
I don’t know Dick about music so hearing a breakdown from someone so musically inclined was very helpful to get me to a level of appreciation for what she did and how hard it must of been. Thanks for the video.
Also it was really interesting to hear you talk about how practiced her passaggio is. She herself has said that she's only had a single vocal lesson in her life and is entirely self taught. I agree that for the most part the strain in her voice was intentional, but I also think it's partially because she's never had any formal training. The subject of maintaining vocal health is particularly important in the vtuber sphere because these girls stream everyday for multiple hours while voice acting the entire time. Add singing on top of that and the strain they must be under is immense. It's become very common for vtubers to have throat issues and take time off because of it.
I have seen many videos from you but never thought you could show interest in vtubers too! Thank you for understanding the charm about vtubers! For me, it's about enjoying the voice and the personality without the usual ""pretty face" that normal artists and idols have to maintain constantly for the media.
Aaaaa thank you so much for explaining the vocal intricacies so clearly! Answer: YES Suisei is taking over the singing scene/world. Really hope you enjoy discovering more of her tracks :)
First time viewer! Loved your breakdown of the different vocal techniques she's using. I never really thought about the different style choices that Japanese singers employ (I just think they sound cool). If you want to hear another powerhouse vtuber singer, I'd suggest Ayunda Risu's song "Alice&U". She's an Indonesian vtuber who's been nicknamed the Celine Dion of vtubers.
I've watched a lot of analyses on this video but I think yours is my favourite. Not focusing on the VTuber novelty and instead explaining why verses 2 and 3 make me tear up. Thank you!
Thank you for this analysis! I'm hungry for more of these reactions that dive deeper into the musicality of the artists instead of staying at surface level emotional reactions. It helps me figure out why something is good, the technicality that goes into it. You got a new subscriber for me and I will check out some of your work.
She's the first vtuber on The First Take and she's paving the way for vtuber artist/singers to be more on the music industry spot light and it gives me smile knowing that but up until now, until you reacted to her performance that I get what a voice coach think of it, I like when professionals react cuz you really can trust their words and it has more weight when they judge performances.
I'm so glad to see your reaction to Suisei. Suisei also has deep middle range voice, and I like that part of her. It's a bit harder rock music than Stellar Stellar but I recommend her another original song TEMPLATE. The MV is on her channel.
I honestly love vtubers and their music. So much of the time a person's appearance dominates a performance, creating an almost another barrier between the audience and the music. Like you talked about getting so absorbed in the person's physical performance that you loose sight of the music. I feel like vtuber music is just often able to minimize that and have just have a much heavier focus on the music itself, as well as allow for more introverted people, or introverts, or even people who just value a quiet life and their privacy, being on them to still share their music. Like you said it's kind of a best of both worlds. I really recommend listening to it with the lyrics on as well. It really just drives home everything her vocal composition is sending out.
While most of the folks dropping by to watch this episode know Suisei and are aware of her vocal ability, it is super interesting and amazing to understand how and why she can do this. Thank you for adding in your thoughts and insights. It really does help me appreciate the people who do stellar performances.
Been following Suisei for years since her indie days. This is such a great event when her voice is now heard widely around the world. Suisei deserves it so much!! Thank you for this video, great reaction as always! Cheers!
Yay you did react to Suisei! 🥰 Now you should react to Ayunda Risu, another VTuber, Alice&U is her original song. Risu can duet with herself! she can sing in 2 totally different voices! What i like about VTuber is that a lot of people don't have enough confidence to perform in flesh. So having an avatar can bring a lot of new talents out, and not only in the singing world but in all aspects of life.
So happy that all of the hard work, all the blood, sweat, and tears that Suisei has fed to the fires of her passion for singing are finally gaining mainstream appreciation. And thank _you_ for such a wonderfully detailed breakdown of this performance! If you’re looking to dip your toes a little further into the pool of vtuber music, then I cannot recommend enough Tokoyami Towa’s cover of ‘Error’. Like Suisei, Towa’s voice is exceptionally powerful and even two years after its release the cover in question still gives me chills every time I listen to it.
thanks for your review! i think you really hit the nail on her singing and the way she's able to sound the way she does. i don't think i've seen a review like this yet, so it was a refreshing analysis with very good points
I will definitely say those points where you point out the stressed tones in the vocals, the lyrics are very in that same emotional tone of desperation and crying for help, especially as the lyrics to this song are very personal to her, so id say its definitely an artistic choice to make the peice hit those emotional strings just right. Was a bit worried at the start with the talk about AI, but you definitely have had one of the better takes regarding the whole vtuber concept.
it might have been a bit confusing, I actually wanted to point out that this is NOT ai generated from the getgo, cause a lot of people wanted me to react to "AI singing" while this is a vtuber :)
Thanks for the review. For people who have been following suisei since her early days. The fact that this performance is a milestone for the vtuber sub culture is already an achievement in itself, I cried when I was watching the premier on the first take. Suisei has become recognizable enough that her covers already get a million views at least. She has also collabed with taku inoue, hope you also review 3:12
Always great to have more eyes on the Hololive girls. Out of all the major vtubing groups their one of the most heavily invested in making music and holding concerts. Suisei will be on TFT again on Wednesday, but there are a lot of great people in the group and growing talents. If you feel like looking into them deeper at some point I generally recommend Watame (often her original "My Song), but there are a lot of great singers like Okayu, AZKi, Sora, IRyS, etc.
This is such a good video. I always love seeing vocal coach reactions like this since there's always so many things to learn that I could apply to myself. Just listening and attempting to mimic the singer is so different than actually knowing what the singer is doing and the choices that they're making. Hearing you talk about dynamics, passaggio and especially that part about the lower register being monotone has given me so much to focus on improving. Also, another Japanese artist that I feel like you'd enjoy is Kei Sugawara. They have a really interesting singing style that uses a lot of yodeling without overdoing it.
After knowing about Vtuber world, especially Hololive, I easily got caught by Suisei's amazing voice and wonderful songs ! She really have that powerful yet pretty voice that makes me enjoy most of her songs. I love hearing her karaoke stream, she have great ranges, but I think she can't or she choose not to sing too much songs that have high notes or have to use cute voice so much :') (sorry if I'm wrong hoshiyomis, it's just my opinion) But she's still one of the best singer talent in Hololive, and my favorite too !
she actually used to sing alot in a single stream and use cute high pitch voice as default for her character before but transitioned it to the current voice and shorter singing streams due to her having throat surgery last year.
I'm really happy to Suisei on the spot light. as per your question, I personally like the idea of getting to know someone's talent or personality detached from their personal appearance, I feel it brings more depth similar to how a blind person can taste and feel more vividly. amazing Tetris player, suspicious humor and multitalented singer with the starting drive and dream to become and idol....instead becoming a shooting star. definitely deserving of the commonly agreed top 3 singers in Hololive, heavy debate on 1st or 2nd. a Suisei, Kanata, Calliope, Sora collab would probably make the internet blow up, although Suisei has already sang duos with all the after mentioned.
Been waiting for your reaction to Suisei's TFT! and im always appreciative of your insight and the way you try to break down different vocal techniques. Always happy when our vtuber idols get recognized outside of the Hololive community. If i can make a recommendation, Id love to suggest listening to Ayunda Risu. Namely, her perfomance on RUclips Music Weekend, of this song Stellar stellar, or her original Alice&U. Not speaking for all vtubers but, Hololive on its own, is full of many talented singers, each with their unique tonal colors. Suisei is known in Hololive as one of their most powerful, and technical skilled singers. Risu on the other hand, is an example of raw talent. Just as powerful, if not more than suisei. Other notable names in hololive, would be Tokoyami towa (her song Palette), Tsunomaki Watame (her song 'My Song'), and Amane Kanata (Her cover of Unravel is amazing) I would love if you check them out
Suisei herself did call Risu "Celine Dion of Hololive" For more Hololive suggestions, AZKi is great at putting emotion in her singing, Inochi being one of the best examples of this. IRyS and Moona are also really good.
About the "Descending tone" of the song... I think people can only identify that on this version of the song. 🤣 Now for the original MV, I would call it a sensory overload masterpiece.
She has another one this Wednesday. Thank you for reviewing her vocals. So far the reviews I’ve seen mostly dwells to her talent in general. The other detailed breakdown I’ve seen is by one other RUclipsr who helped to breakdown the technical aspects of the melody portion of this performance
14:48. That's why vtubers are best. You don't care if they are charming, charismatic, beautiful or handsome etc. *You are here for their characters or voices, not for their appearance.*
Some info I've seen getting passed around. This song takes a lot out of her. It is written specifically to show off her limits. She normally refuses to sing this song before 3:00 P.M., to allow her voice time to warm up to it. Due to scheduling constraints, this recording was taken at 12:00 P.M. and she did not have enough time to warm-up.
I love this song and you did an excellent job analyzing Suisei's voice. I found it really interesting that you talked about her voice being "on edge" in the pre-chorus. Another reactor, ravenclaw reacts, used the same phrase to describe this part of the song, but rather than talking about her voice, she was talking about the music. I'm wondering if the polymeter added to how much her voice sounded close to the edge, without actually putting as much strain on it.
I'm really happy that you reacted to Suisei's first take. I've been watching a lot of your other first take reaction and Filipino singers. I don't actually have a lot of knowledge about the details of singing but I think your videos are really knowledgeable and I really enjoyed this one because she's my oshi.
i really appreciate your knowledge of being a vocal coach! implementing strained belting in your singing is walking on thin ice and i agree with that! most "vocal coaches" are incapable of analysing music like you Katriinka!
The composer has some time to get familiar with her vocal, and it may be that the song is tailored to her voice. That's maybe why she can sing it more easily. She had sing it for around 2 years too. And you will see her again next Wednesday, on her 2nd performance in First Take channel.
Suisei wrote the lyrics. The guitarist recorded on this video composed the music, and recomposed it for this acoustic version. They have collaborated many times, and know each other well.
@@ImFrelled yes, I am commenting about when she said "it also help that the song has.... ". She essentially said that the song fit her voice range. And that is I think because Inotaku has time to get familiar with her voice. They made 3.12 before this song.
If you want to hear some amazing vocals I reccommend checking out ALiCE&u by Ayunda Risu, from the Indonesian branch of Hololive (the same company Suisei belongs to). Suisei herself has referred to Risu's vocal ability as "The Celine Dion of Hololive." If memory also serves, at the time of recording the song she had no real formal vocal training, so she's going off of raw, self-taught talent alone. The lyrics (I recommend turning on CCs if you watch it as there is some language shift that isn't translated in the main video itself) and the song itself are in turn dedicated to her fans for supporting her, so there's a lot of emotional connect between the artist and the song.
First time here! Thank for insightful analytic about how Suisei sing. It’s very interesting to know more about how she sing as I am her fan. Looking forward to more video!
I looked through your old videos, I’m surprised you’ve never looked at Ado! She’s also an anonymous singer, she uses an anime style art to represent herself of social media and in MVs but she’s not a vtuber. She does live shows without lights on her so you see her as a shadow that moves across the stage. With the artist behind Suisei loves expressing herself through the character she’s made while Ado is more just “no face for you”. There’s never been a better time to sing for millions without being famous!
Other people have also mentioned this, but the original version is drastically different in feeling! And it has the best English subtitles too, they even match Suisei's own vocals so they're entirely singable! Suisei has done several lives (non-paid; live is the Japanese term for concerts) on her RUclips, and she sang Stellar Stellar in her most recent one! The video is " 【3DLIVE】遂に復帰‼重大告知ライブ ", and this was her return live after around a month of recovering from vocal cord surgery. Stellar Stellar is the very first song, at 2 minutes in. And lastly, she has two full albums out, "Still Still Stellar" and "Specter", the latter was just released (and she also just released a new single called Pathfinder)! "Debutante Ball" from Specter is an absolutely beautiful song, I think you'd love it Two Hololive singers with deeper voices are Tokoyami Towa ("Palette) and Nekomata Okayu (" 毒杯スワロウ ", or "Swallow the venom"). Of the 75 Hololive Production members, 60 of them have at least 1 original song (with over 500 total across everyone), and even more have cover songs. A third Japanese talent, Amane Kanata, sang the song "unravel" in her 3D live recently, and I think you'd be wowed by her performance! It'll be the video from 2 weeks ago in her channel (Kanata Ch.). She has Meniere's disease (which is uncurable), so she's slowly going deaf in one of her ears
I recommend hearing Ironmouse with her Opera Singing ("When I Look at You" from The Scarlet Pimpernel Movie) or the cover of this same song (Stellar Stellar) by Ayunda Risu, there is a lot of power on the voices behind these avatars and I love the idea of major artists one day being able to keep a complete separate persona without having to deal with the harassments that comes from fame
I like that you understand VTubers concept very well. Also, about many songs, not just this in particular I often find myself tend to like them, but I cannot describe words or reason why I like them, so having watching someone who can digest and point out reasons why it is really good is help me to understand reasons more, though I would say that I didn't know specific vocal terms (like passaggio), so I still miss some points, but at least I remember them.
I've been waiting for this day. Ever since your LiSa on The First take videos. I knew one day we would get a Suisei, I've been following her since her Debut with Hololive, and she's one of those artists that can blow anyone away with her talent, hard work and sheer willpower. She's an Idol, even among Idols. There are a lot of incredibly talented VTubers out there, and once people get past the "gimmick" of it, they see the pure skill these people have - and Suisei is one of the best. "Stellar Stellar" in particular is filled with all her emotions and feelings from her struggle, her fight on her Journey as an artist. There's a whole story there to look up, if you're interested. Also, her other song "Ghost" is just as incredible as this... and my other personal favourites from Hololive Idols with Amazing talent are; Towa singing "ERROR" and "Palette", Watame singing "My Song" and Moona singing "Perisai Jitu".
Im waiting for your reaction for this since Suisei 1st take is out. Katriinka She has another one 1st take coming in this Wed. (1st Feb) . Suisei comes a long way to be here. From Indie Vtuber, with her self-created model. Become one of talents in comedian.... I mean idol agency. Has 2 concert of her own.( and already announced the 3rd one) . Hope you listen to her other song/cover too.
I feel like I was given the chance to enjoy and appreciate listening to singers in a greater depth than I was before, due to your explanations. Thank you.
This song is like her master work. It'll be what she's remembered for when she retires. The analogy i always use with Suisei (this girl) is that of a race car driver: Most would go a little easy on the vehicle in order to finish the race, but Suisei pushes the car and risks breaking it to get just that 3% faster. And 3% faster means you win the race. (or the car breaks). Now do Tokoyami Towa, the only girl in her agency that can really challenge her for vocal power. (and who i think doesnt get enough recognition for this). I suggest the song "Error" as a good example of her style.
Thank you for reacting to her. I'm a vtuber fan, and only know "Suisei mouth voice good" like a caveman, glad to hear more insight from a professional in the field.
Suisei is one of the Hololive talents who knows the most about how to care about her throat. She used to have a very high pitched voice for her character which caused her a lot of throat straining, so she changed it and now uses a more natural voice. She also had a throat surgery on late 2022. The "yodel" is actually on her natural voice, as she speaks with a gyaru accent (something similar to english valley-girl accent) so it's not that straining to her voice. What stresses her throat is not singing loudly but singing calmly. She has a very loud natural voice but keep herself in check pretty easily which demonstrates the amount of control she has on her tones.
Hi, with the hololive reaction, you might be interested in reacting to holo member with the highest vocal range, Risu, which she showcases in her MV song Alice&U (And which at that time of that song, she vocally only been self studying without taking any lesson)
Hi! Person fully into the Hololive rabbit hole; Oh my god yeah the Vtuber scene is filled topped to bottom with insanely talented singers and songwriters, if you'd like some rec's on which members outside of Suisei to check out, it's a looong list, but if I had to keep it to just one, I could not recommend Tokayami Towa more, specifically her original song Pallet, her singing is on par with Suisei's in levels of uniqueness and sheer power, I've never really heard anything like her before and it'd be really interesting to see your reaction to it. Pallet has a lot of soul and heart in it and it makes me wanna cry every time I hear it, like Stellar Stellar, it's written straight from the heart and that comes out full force in its sound.
Susei is so amazing, just for making the vid and actually making good points, I sub! I’ve always just loved not seeing a persons face so I don’t mind but I feel that it’s bad that I mostly just get attracted to person by their voice, Yk since I’ve been watching Vtubers for like 2 years, Vtubers use their models to make people interested but use their personality, abilities, humor, ect, to really make people stay, it’s real nice.
Suisei "stellar stellar" and "ghost" is emotional while her "Next color planet" is cute and her collab with Caliope "Getcha" "Capsule" "Wicked" is cool. -Risu "Alice&you" is also fantastic
Suisei has one of the best singing voices in all of hololive. Easily in my top 5 along side ayunda risu (alice&u), moona hoshinova (high tide), tokoyami towa (palette), and pavolia reine (gate open: start). Such amazing talent in hololive
I've watched a lot of your videos reacting to Mamamoo, and while I love those girls, I'm really invested in vtubers and I'm glad you got introduced to Suisei, I hope you venture into the vsingers/vsingers because there are a lot of talented ones! A lot of people explained how vtubers are but basically, they're real people using unique avatars to be kind of like their online personality. Suisei will be in another First Take video soon, I hope you react to that one too!
Thank you for choosing Hoshimachi SUISEI As a fan of hers, I am very happy to hear professional commentary and reactions. I would like to tell you a little bit about the past of SUISEI During her school days, she did not receive any special schooling or coaching regarding her singing. She was a typical high school girl who loved going to karaoke with her friends and singing happily. Then, I learned about Vtuber through Kizuna AI and started working as an individual, but my activities were similar to general RUclipsrs, with game distribution and no music activities. I felt that there was a limit to my personal activities, so I challenged the audition twice and was able to join the hololive musician division. At this time, she had a voice trainer once, but she canceled it because she felt it wasn't for her. Since then, she has been self-taught in writing lyrics and singing. She thinks that her singing ability is supported by the singing voice of "Shiina RINGO", which she liked to listen to since she was a student, and the influence of "Inoue TAKU", who is currently working together.
Japanese vowels (not getting into the exact details though, just a basic key for those who are interested): A - usually described as A from "father" but can also sound close to A from "apple" E - like the E from "end" U - close to oo, like "oops" except the lips are completely unrounded, unlike English. I - like ee from "keep" O - like the O from "open" Note: none of these basic vowels are realized as diphthongs, so if you're accent realizes any of the above examples as such, then I suggest double checking the IPA for Japanese for a more accurate picture. Diphthongs: they all work as you'd imagine. No surprises there at all. Double vowels: Japanese assigns a unit of time to each "Mora" (similar to syllable, but slightly different), double vowels count as 2. Also, "oo" and "ou" merged and are realized identically now.

HoloLive has a lot of great singers and songs. Suisei is doing another "The First Take" Wednesday.
I recommend you listen again with the subtitles on. This song is amazing; about depression and defiance.
she is going to perform again in the First Take, februar 1 at 5am PT/8am ET/2pm CET/10pm , just with a different song.
cant wait to XG-Shooting Star 💫💙
Katriinka I recommend you Amamiya Sora voice actress and anime singer
Susei is really the epitome of being a self made talent. When she started V-Tubing she not only created her own avatar (drew, rigged and animated it) but it's remained basically the same and she's the *only* Vtuber to come into Hololive as an independent Vtuber to keep their model. She literally made herself into a Star via hard work, talent and determination. Like others have said she just got back a couple months ago from Throat Surgery and beyond all of this she's one of the finest Tetris competitive players in the world. An amazing person all around.
She's a psychopath!
I love her for this. 🤣
"and beyond all of this she's one of the finest Tetris competitive players in the world" let's not get ahead of yourself my man
@@Loczek531 No they weren't exaggerating, Suisei actually did played against professional Tetris players. You can actually find it on yt
良い説明をありがとう。
私もあなたのように伝えたかったが、私の英語力では不十分だった。
(DeepL translation)Thanks for the good explanation.
She has definitely earned earned the respect of every musician and V-tuber in the world.
thank you for your reactions and opinions, sometimes it's enough for us to just enjoy the artist's song behind the avatar without having to judge their original appearance
this. yes!
That's an amazing tidbit on her process, thanks!
gigachad suisei
If we see the method in another way, i can tell that she have ocd :))
A genius in a sense
Three funfacts:
Oh definitely pitch on risu. That squirrel is amazing, she is a squirrel girl that is amazing but also just want to have fun
Yeah, would really recommend Risuvs Alice&U and also her king cover would also like to recommend Shiranui Flare with her King cover as well..
the surgery and timeout after was in october and she came back from that hiatus with a 3D live show in early november so no, this performance is not her "coming back" from a surgery, that was a couple months ago.
abunda risuuuu❤❤ up up up
I've watched a lot of your videos for other artists and songs I like, but I don't think I've ever been as invested as I've been with this one.
thank you so much! it was really cool experience! I love the concept so much!
For someone who is musically inclined but not of the vocal variety (and Im sure not the only who feels this way after watching your reaction), I really hope you do another video for her next first take performance which comes out tomorrow and look forward to it.
thank you so so much! :)
this was so well explained. straight facts
What a time to be alive when we're having a serious discussion about the vocal talents of a girl who the community fears as an axe-swinging Tetris God.
legend watching axe swinging legend
A bit of curiosity: the guy playing guitar here is Inoue Taku, the composer and producer for this and some other of Suisei's songs. He's also a composer for Idolm@ster, one of the biggest multimedia projects in Japan. After listening to some of Suisei's older songs, he fell in love with her voice and offered to compose a song specifically for her to sing. The result was 3時12分, translating roughly to "3:12 AM", which I personally really love. They eventually formed a two man band: Midnight Grand Orchestra and continue to work closely on their individual carreers as well.
Suisei will be coming back on the first take this Wednesday with another song as well~
It's wednesday? Can't wait!
Wait... Where'd you get the date? Was it announced somewhere?
@@seighartmercury it was announced on Suiseis solo live
@@kingsnaa Oh! I haven't watched it yet, I'm surprised I haven't seen a clip of the announcement yet. Thanks for the info
Thank you tons! :)
You had me in the first half with that intro lmao. I was like, “no way she actually called Suisei A.I.”
I was trying to point out the difference haha, and now I have people jumping me in the comments. Thanks for being kind about it. Thing is I was approach by a lot of people with "singing ai on the first take" so I wanted to make sure I will point out this is not ai generated but a real human. :)
@@Katriinka in case it’s confusing, a lot of people get the idea that it’s an AI because many early vtubers had an AI theme and role played a little bit with that.
bruh I almost went on an unhinged rant in the comments💀
One of my favourite vocal coach reactor and one of my favourite vtuber artist. I am dreaming of this day and now it became true. Thanks for reacting to her. i hope you can continue to react to more vtubers because they also have the talent.
omg thank you so much! thats so sweet. I appreciate you a lot!
im really happy to see more vocal coaches analyze vsingers.
for this first take video i have added 2 japanese vocal coaches to my playlist and just added Katriinka to the list.
the playlist also has a dj and a pair of professional singers.
How much you were able to get out of just hearing her voice is the main point.
Vtubers are/were a niche genre and they were worried about getting mainstream negativity, so her managers and her decided to not do the standard intro and just sing, to shut up the haters before they have a chance to dismiss her or lose intrest.
It worked.
Hoshimachi Suisei are the first VTUBERS appeared at The First Take, but a lot of VTUBERS has great singing talent, maybe you should check some of them
Check Enna Alouette
Hope she checks out Suisei's albums and concerts!
@@josueblackopsz will do, thx for recommendation
hoshimachi suisei, tokoyami towa and mori calliope are my favourite singing vtubers, all 3 are from cover corps hololive brand of vtubers.
towa is also a japanese vtuber like suisei. highly recommending her live version of -error-, its an emotional one, i also recommend palette from her.
mori is an english vtuber living in japan, she does both rap, ballads and pop music and she is the only vtuber to my knowledge signed to a major label, in her case universal music. songs from mori i would recommend are songs like Excuse My Rudeness, But Could You Please RIP? (an austrian vtuber called takanashi kiara, also from the hololive brand, makes a cameo in that song/video) and end of a life.
@@Deilwynna bruh, how the hell you miss *Risu* from HoloID???
There are many Hidden gems in the Vtuber Industry especially when the "subculture" was just starting. Suisei started in 2018, it was a struggle back then due to low subscribers/viewership and thought multiple times about quitting but fortunately here we are with her being the first representative of Vtubers in first take. FYI, she will be back at first take in Wednesday 22:00 JST
we can share her music and even if we can't help her so much we can gather more fans more people to love her songs
@Cannabis Dreams As the name implies, they get singers, mainly Japanese singers, to come in and sing one of their songs while being live recorded. There is no splicing, autotune, anything. Performers get one chance and the first take gets edited and uploaded straight to the channel.
@Cannabis Dreams it’s played live but ok 🤷♂️ its also very popular, u just haven’t heard of it
@Cannabis Dreams pretentious? You do you...
I like vtuber idea actually! wanted to make one at one point as well to sing haha. maybe I will eventually :)
She's from the English of Hololive so I think you'd have an easier time understanding them.
thank you so much for recommendation :)
I would also recommend Calliope Mori who also from the English speaking branch but sings (and raps) in both English and Japanese
@@Chocolatenigma and her badly hidden secret identity :p
@@Chocolatenigma her singing isnt that great though, i recommend gura instead
@@fish-zb4tg gura is a nice suggestion for a vocal coach, she has a nice voice
She has Officially Taken the whole world by storm, for being a pioneer and the first ever VTuber to go on the First Take.
I will definitely want to see more, so I will be reading suggestions in the comments! :)
from all the reaction of suisei's stellar-stellar, i really like yours the most because you're not only just reacting like "oh she's good etc. etc.", you also explained everything so even an amateur like me can understand what she's doing on every part of the song
If I had to pick one song to represent Suisei, it's definitely Stellar Stellar.
if you wanna see her as a live vtuber performance, she did upload a free sneak peak of her recent concert on her yourube channel
For me, it's about enjoying the voice and the personality without the usual ""pretty face" that normal artists and idols have to maintain constantly for the media.
thank you tons for watching! I was always intrigued by vtubers and wanted to even make one to sing haha. Maybe one day, eventually. :)
@@Katriinka id honestly love to see your reaction to Mori Calliope, she's a Vtuber who raps, shes from the same company that Suisei is from, Hololive.
Aaaaa thank you so much for explaining the vocal intricacies so clearly!
Answer: YES Suisei is taking over the singing scene/world. Really hope you enjoy discovering more of her tracks :)
woah look who it is
Well well well well. Look who we got here
First time viewer! Loved your breakdown of the different vocal techniques she's using. I never really thought about the different style choices that Japanese singers employ (I just think they sound cool). If you want to hear another powerhouse vtuber singer, I'd suggest Ayunda Risu's song "Alice&U". She's an Indonesian vtuber who's been nicknamed the Celine Dion of vtubers.
thank you so much! a lot of people suggested AliceU so I will definitely check her out! :)
You got a new subscriber for me and I will check out some of your work.
thank you so much! made my day haha :)
Been waiting for your Reaction Video! TY so much! So detailed and I think it's the best!
Hoping IRyS (Another VTuber) gets the stage too!
thank you so much! :)
It really does help me appreciate the people who do stellar performances.
thank you so so much! I appreciate it tons ❤
For the new people he's referring to this song: [ ruclips.net/video/LYFciXBcXIQ/видео.html ]
She's just so phenomenal. Personally my favorite singer, such a beautiful voice.
I'm really impressed that you did a bit of research on her before reacting. I love it
This is such a good video.
Not speaking for all vtubers
but, Hololive on its own, is full of many talented singers, each with their unique tonal colors.
Suisei is known in Hololive as one of their most powerful, and technical skilled singers.
Risu on the other hand, is an example of raw talent. Just as powerful, if not more than suisei.
Other notable names in hololive, would be Tokoyami towa (her song Palette), Tsunomaki Watame (her song 'My Song'), and Amane Kanata (Her cover of Unravel is amazing)
I would love if you check them out
Suisei herself did call Risu "Celine Dion of Hololive"
For more Hololive suggestions, AZKi is great at putting emotion in her singing, Inochi being one of the best examples of this. IRyS and Moona are also really good.
About the "Descending tone" of the song... I think people can only identify that on this version of the song. 🤣 Now for the original MV, I would call it a sensory overload masterpiece.
Suisei really went "I dont need to talk. I just need to sing to explain why I am here."
And leave without elaboration
@@potatoxgaming9466 No elaboration, just a small, quiet, cute sigh of relief
Using a avatar is usefull to separate personal life from profissional life.

Ah yes Susei, a true gem, shes worked hard, Her singing is amazing she’s talented in just about anything she does. Glad shes getting recognized
suisei actually uses a variety of different vibrato throughout the song. this information was made more clear by one of the jp vocal coaches.
This was a good analysis of Suisei's sound. Thank you for bringing some more attention to this space.
i really appreciate your knowledge of being a vocal coach! implementing strained belting in your singing is walking on thin ice and i agree with that! most "vocal coaches" are incapable of analysing music like you Katriinka!
It's crazy that she can be an amazing singer alongside being a Tetris Goddess, save some talent for the rest of us, sheesh
"Debutante Ball" from Specter is an absolutely beautiful song, I think you'd love it
Two Hololive singers with deeper voices are Tokoyami Towa ("Palette) and Nekomata Okayu (" 毒杯スワロウ ", or "Swallow the venom").
I've seen some of your videos in the past and I gotta say I'm really impressed at how well informed you were about this whole thing!
It's mind-blowing to me that this whole performance, instruments and all, were done in one take
I've been waiting for this day.
You look so proud at the end, with your hands together; amazing detailed reactions!
Im waiting for your reaction for this since Suisei 1st take is out. Katriinka
She has another one 1st take coming in this Wed. (1st Feb)
.
Suisei comes a long way to be here. From Indie Vtuber, with her self-created model. Become one of talents in comedian.... I mean idol agency. Has 2 concert of her own.( and already announced the 3rd one)
.
Hope you listen to her other song/cover too.
I would love to see her live since you are saying she has also an amazing personality! :) thank you tons!
Those who know the lyrics and her history be like :
😭 i'm proud of you suityan, really proud 😭🥲 you really are a hoshii
I feel like I was given the chance to enjoy and appreciate listening to singers in a greater depth than I was before, due to your explanations. Thank you.
thank you so much!! :)
The crazy thing about this video is this was all done in one take, any mistakes that may come. No retakes at all
It was really nice to see someone react to a vtuber's singing from an analytical perspective! Not enough do. You got a new subscriber lol
Hi, with the hololive reaction, you might be interested in reacting to holo member with the highest vocal range, Risu, which she showcases in her MV song Alice&U
(And which at that time of that song, she vocally only been self studying without taking any lesson)
I hope one day you get a chance to check out Ironmouse's triumphant return with "When I Look At You."
Thank you for choosing Hoshimachi SUISEI
As a fan of hers, I am very happy to hear professional commentary and reactions.
I would like to tell you a little bit about the past of SUISEI
During her school days, she did not receive any special schooling or coaching regarding her singing.
Highly recommend turning on english captions, the lyrics add a lot more to the enjoyment. Powerful song.
Japanese vowels (not getting into the exact details though, just a basic key for those who are interested):
A - usually described as A from "father" but can also sound close to A from "apple"
E - like the E from "end"
U - close to oo, like "oops" except the lips are completely unrounded, unlike English.
I - like ee from "keep"
O - like the O from "open"
Note: none of these basic vowels are realized as diphthongs, so if you're accent realizes any of the above examples as such, then I suggest double checking the IPA for Japanese for a more accurate picture.
Diphthongs: they all work as you'd imagine. No surprises there at all. Double vowels: Japanese assigns a unit of time to each "Mora" (similar to syllable, but slightly different), double vowels count as 2. Also, "oo" and "ou" merged and are realized identically now.
I love it when you learn a lot from the reactions. Keep these videos up, they're really enjoyable thank you so much! ❤❤
