Great video! I've been a savvy world-wide traveller for many years for both business and pleasure and I get hacked off when I see folks paying through the nose at the desk for something that they could have got so much cheaper at home, had they known about it. Purchasing a car hire excess policy in the UK, is the all-time winner. One area that often confuses unwitting hirers in foreign countries is the toll road system. Whether to pay the rental company for an electronic toll pass for the duration of the hire, or risk paying cash as you go? Maybe that could be the subject for a later video. Keep up the good work. Love your channels.
Totally agree about taking annual excess cover. I’ve got Worldwide with Zurich for £98. Admittedly you have to pay the car hire company first then claim back and I’ve not used it yet so can’t claim to know how picky they are about refunds.
Great advice there, I used hire cars a lot in Spain, and was only ripped off once, by Goldcar at Alicante, never again. Took out a yearly excess policy thereafter, and never used Goldcar again.
Good useful information, especially for people who have not had much to do with car hire companies. There are so many companies trying to scam people. Thanks Jim Great video.
Another horror story, in malaga, the guy in front of my booked his car under his name eg Alan Smith. On his credit card his name is Mr a smith. They wouldn't let him have a car unless he rebooked there and then (at vastly increased cost) under Mr a smith. He didn't back down but had to pay cancellation fee which he said he would contest when he got home. Him and his wife (in tears) left to catch the train to malaga city and planned to hire with another company for the following day
Would always use Alamo in Florida as well. We used them again in April and it was a breeze. Straight to the garage, pick the car and drive away and no problems at drop off either.
@@jetsetjimbo That's what I love, I chose the new Mitsubishi Outlander this time as not something we get here now. Basically an X-Trail underneath but drove really well and had 7 seats. Two weeks for £570 at Easter which I didn't think was too bad at all.
I’ve used Goldcar at Alicante airport when travelling to Murcia. I booked it through Expedia, paid for the extra insurance fee for full cover, but on pick up at the airport, Goldcar didn’t recognise the insurance policy offered from Expedia, and said it would not cover the car as it’s not Goldcar insurance. So a few €100 later it was cleared up
They have a terrible reputation. If you ever fly into Murcia (Corvera) try lamangarentacar.com/ - we've used them several times and it's a piece of cake - everything is upfront and never had any drama
I Know it well! We stay up near Sucina most years (Hacienda Riquelme - great pricing around there for rental or purchases) but are venturing to Malaga area this year.
I've hired abroad (Spain and Greece) many times. I had a great experience this year with record go (who I'd used before) in mallorca. They don't review great but my experience was spot on. Last year I got stitched up at malaga airport using discovery cars. I had my own xs insurance policy but only £2000 credit card limit. As I'd paid off most of my holiday on it but also booked the car hire using it, they insisted I had £1500 clear (I had 1350). Otherwise I couldn't have car. They suggested I ring my bank. It was a Sunday so no answer. I was forced into taking their zero excess at £300 - not a great start to my holiday. I've upped my limit to 2500 now but going to Cyprus soon and their reviews look much more favourable.
@@jetsetjimbo brand new yaris cross hybrid with only 800km on clock. Immaculate although I still took videos in and out as you suggest. They also have a fast track system for pickup and a key drop off for our of hours (I noticed some other companies charge for this) Ps sometimes scratches etc aren't easy to pick out when hiring from inside dimly lit multi Storey airport car parks.
It’s easy to hire an EV over there but I’ve never done it as always end up roaming the desert somewhere. I know the Tesla network gets busy in LA but am not sure how much of anything else there is to be honest. Petrol is around $5 per gallon in most areas on LA now (although have seen it closer to $6 in the posh bits)
What would you suggest regaring a car seat, we have an 18 month old and the car seat we use here is one of those massive isofix units. No way to get it on a plane? The big companies charge a silly ammount per day but we found a smaller one in portugal who charged 20€ for the whole trip.
Really great start Jimbo, lots of very savvy insights and sage advice. Looking forward to more on the new channel. How about one on ferries seeing as that how a lot of UK families get abroad. This could include breakdown cover too. Bravo!
Great vid thanks. Can you or anyone else recommend a very good and honest car hire company in Faro Algarve Portugal? P.s. I have subscribed to your channel. My first having watched many.
Hi Lee, I’d say start with the companies in the links and just read through the reviews. There are rotters and good companies in every country and some can be particularly good or bad in a particular location (for example Alamo might be great in USA and horrible in Spain) so read the reviews on the booking site as well as on Google 👍
haha yeh this May upgrade offer as my car wasnt available only extra £35 a day.i said no.force selling so i focefully said i want a car similar to what i payed for and im not paying any extra.ive already paid.you took my money so provide me with a car at no extra cost
On AutoEurope it states under the Full Damage & Theft Protection option that includes a refundable excess: C.D.W. Deductible: EUR 2,500.00, VAT included, paid locally. Does that mean you still have to pay up to 2500 if something goes wrong and you have to apply to get a refund or is it a credit card amount they hold?
Yes, deductable generally means excess. Most companies put a big hold on your credit card so it could just be badly worded and actually mean the credit card hold but still seems steep.
South of Rrance is not cheap for anything really. Try googling some local car rental places and check their reviews. You can sometimes save a few quid that way in some areas.

Agree re the tolls.

I’ve used one before (Axa was the insurer), refund took about 2 weeks.

I've heard some AWFUL stories about Goldcar. No idea how they continue to get away with it.

haha i just watched your aiport parking video and was adding a comment about you doing a car hire video.then you said watch this video here^.good job
Result!

I like the fact you get to choose the car with Alamo rather than simply getting handed the keys to something.

With sat nav “Down load all maps you need before you go “ you then will not have worry about data use . It’s brilliant and easy to do .
You could make a video to show people how to do it. “Off line maps”

Thanks for the info. I have applied for an ESTA in the past, and agree that best to apply directly. Appears a bit onerous but not.

I’d buy a smaller cheap one and stick it on the plane. I’ve checked one on Ryanair a few times for about £15 I think.

how many car rental companies recognise the excess cover for £54
They don’t need to. It’s your cover, you pay the excess then get a refund from the insurer. I’ve used it before, took about 10 days.
