I've taken it quite a few times, to Paris and Lille. I've not had any complaints thus far. It's fun to run a GPS speed app on your phone and see it get close to 200mph

Nice one. Is it a Premier Inn Z hotel? I stayed in one just over London Bridge. Excellent! Great for 1 person, bit tight for 2, but brilliant value. The cafe downstairs was very good as well.

Have to try one of those - I use the Premier Inn Tower Hill but last time I stayed there it was £320 B&B a night last April, but really convenient for a Trinity House dinner and travelling in and out of London City Airport to Glasgow/Edinburgh. Long gone are the days when I used to travel south from Glasgow to go to a meeting at Temple for £25 RETURN on EasyJet - the lunch and car parking at Glasgow airport each cost more than the return flights, could be a long day though leaving home at 4am and getting back after midnight. Best I can do these days is a mid morning flight south to City Airport for £45 but the northbound leg is invariably £150 or more……….

Earlier this year in January I had a 7 night stay in a 3* hotel in Malta for £79 for the week, and ~£20 flight each way booked separately from London airports (Luton and Stansted). Seems to be quite a lot of out of season deals that come up for Malta having a look around travel websites/agents. The weather can apparently be bad but it was around 17-18c each day I was there with no rain or anything bad which was much nicer than the barely above 0 it was in the UK. May be one to look out for, lovely little island for some sightseeing

Good idea the "your parking space". My sis was in Brighton and was £23 for on street parking. The amount to park anywhere is crazy.

Jim, you think the price hike for going away during school holiday time is iniquitous/ daylight robbery you should see the price hike year round if you are a single person wanting to go away on holiday…………. In term time most companies charge double the couple/family rate and in school holiday time often even more.

We did it this summer and it was cheaper than hotels or Airbnb. The place really nice. May not the best place for kids 8 to 13 as there is much to do in place. Recommend

Thanks for this great advice. Recently I hired an SUV car from Hertz in Johannesburg for 3 weeks. On the last day while returning the car we had a puncture. We simply changed the punctured tyre for the spare and put the punctured tyre in the boot because we were in a hurry. When we arrived at Hertz the guy told me that I had to pay for a new tyre because I had not taken tyre and glass insurance with them - I did take out insurance with another company so no big deal, but just remember to fix punctures and don't return the car on a spare tyre to avoid unnecessary charges. The trick is this: if you get a puncture you need to remove the punctured tyre, put on the spare wheel, go to a garage and fix the punctured tyre. Once the tyre has been fixed put it back in the car and put away the spare wheel. When you return the car don't mention anything about the puncture. They will examine the car and check that the spare wheel is there and they won't charge you anything. That's a tip the guy at Hertz gave us. One last tip for those hiring cars in South Africa...if you need to take the car across the border to other countries like Eswatini you need to get a cross border letter. It gives you permission to cross the border with the car and proves that you have not stolen it. The cross border letter can take up to 48 hours so remember to request it early. I was stuck in Johannesburg for two days and had to pay for emergency hotel accommodation because I had not requested the cross border letter in advance. It was horrible! By the way I live in England and I booked the car through Expedia. It had not been clear when I booked the car with Expedia that the cross border letter can take up to 48 hours to be ready and I did not think much of it because in the past the letter was issued instantly.

Pre Covid always used T5 business never has any issues Mercedes minibuses always waiting short 3 minutes ride to terminal but post Covid the prices are ridiculous even long stay. I’d never use anything but official airport parking & only park myself , I don’t want any Eastern European joy riding my car about. Pod parking done it once never again expensive & the most uncomfortable bumpy ride especially if you have a bad back like we do, then on return the pods had broken down so had to catch the shuttle bus instead. I’ll give the stately home a look at next time but the last few times I’ve just got the super loop bus to Heathrow which I can connect to via a short bus ride from my house dirt cheap & regular the only downside is then having to get to T5 from the T2/3 bus terminus via the free train.
