    When the iPhone is in a tripod you can open the shutter for up to 29 seconds. You have to adjust it manually. Also I believe there are a few apps now that will let you shoot in RAW such as Halide. This was almost the PERFECT video night mode/ astrophotography test that I've been hoping for bc I really want to see what it can do with its potential maxed.

    Android does night mode for more than 2 years, new iPhone drops with a nightmode that's easily out-performed by Huawei's, gets all the credit.
    Not gonna take anything away from the iPhone. It has a sick camera, and I gotta give it to it, but this right here is just sad and it just keeps on happening.

    • @Quoutub
      @Quoutub 5 лет назад +1

      mehrab hasan Actually Google has a night mode since 2013. It's called HDR+, it's just a faster night mode. The difference between HDR+ off and HDR+ on is huge in low-light. Night Sight could be also called HDR++.

      . The P30 Pro takes better nightshots than any other phone on night-mode 'without' their nightmode :p
      And btw...they way night modes work on phones, they're not supposed to be 'live'. A phone cant show you what it's gonna capture for the next 2-5 seconds in real time. The ones that do, show you an estimated brightness level, which the photo at the end doesn't necessarily always turn out to be.

    Not sure why Armando keeps talking about raw on iPhone. Computational photography of night mode is supposed to utilize every last bit of dynamic range from the sensor. Also DR is limited by the tiny sensor. What you see on the iPhone is the best you are going to get.

    • @mondobytes
      @mondobytes  5 лет назад +1

      And maybe he dont need a camera anymore😉. ..I think this test seems a bit stupid. ..🤔but maybe 10 years from now almost nobody need an expensive camera ?
      Today this Iphone is good for small prints and Instagram.
      But I dont look at it as good camera...only a really good phone camera.😊...Still long way to go.

    • @jjones1107
      @jjones1107 5 лет назад

      The phone camera is small but capable. Apple software post processes images before its sent to the photos app. There are apps that let you save the image before the post processing happens, and saves it as tiff. It’s not exactly raw but it lets you manipulate the image better than the Apple software can.

    • @Quoutub
      @Quoutub 5 лет назад +1

      Computational photography doesn't just leverage the dynamic range of the sensor, it also increases the technical dynamic range of the camera by combining multiple exposures (though in this case this might be not better than one single long exposure possibly, I guess the iPhone combines 30 1s exposures, but I don't know why). A dng file would be useful, for example a different white balance.

    • @cooloox

      @@jankarlsson5358 Lenses is the biggest issue after sensor size. Just go to the zoo and have fun looking at the small pebbles (oh wait, that's the lions) in your images. Go to a football match and good luck capturing detail on the opposite side of the pitch.

  • @ChannaEdirisinghe
    @ChannaEdirisinghe 5 лет назад +1

    I hardly comment on RUclips videos but this is very interesting. Lot of RUclipsrs don’t push night mode to next level. Amazing content. Keep up!
    Also night mode algorithm on iPhone captures multiple photos on different lenses and exposure levels (definitely on RAW) and use machine learning to build up the night mode photo in compressed format by extracting features in each RAW photo. So even if iPhone ever allows RAW output for users I doubt it will have night mode then.
    Edit: But this is a very positive start on computational photography era on mobile phones.

    If you guys used a tripod with the iPhone 11 you would have gotten options for longer exposure times. The gyroscope inside the phone detects when the phone is on a tripod giving you options for longer exposure times anywhere from 2-30 seconds. I would love to see an update with these exposures

      We did use a tripod, all shots were done in 28 seconds

      @@mondobytes I appreciate your reply Armando! I must have spaced, because I went back and rewatched and yes you indeed shot with the iPhone mounted on the A7RIII. My apologies! With todays news of the Pixel 4's astrophotography mode, how do you feel of the iPhone 11's night mode capabilities? Do you think it would still be comparable if say a third party app was developed on iOS?

    I thought the iPhone can go up to 30 seconds exposure if you have it on a tripod? I could be wrong but I think iPhondo did a test and was able to get 30 seconds. I’ll have to go back and rewatch that video to check.

      Update: I went back to watch the iPhondo video and he was able to get 30 seconds. Maybe it was darker where he was or he just played with the setting more, I don’t know.

    Why didn't you bring a Android phone like Huawei or OnePlus?
    I've taken amazing starry night photos with my OnePlus 6 since it was released.
    I really didn't understand "back in the day" talk... why would you even talk about it when youre not trying a modern Android? Missed opportunity here I think.

    i doubt you're gonna be able to shoot raw like that. the reason being there is a lot of software trickery involved to make this happen. not just an open shutter
