- Have you ever wondered why people repeat destructive patterns and seek validation in harmful places? Today on Psychiatry Simplified, we dive into a powerful monologue from the show "Baby Reindeer" to explore trauma and its link to the cycle of harm. Don’t worry, no spoilers ahead!
"Baby Reindeer" revolves around aspiring comedian Donnie Dunn. Working as a bartender in London, he offers a cup of tea to a customer named Martha, leading to a spiralling cascade into themes of obsession, trauma, and the struggle for control.
This video explores the realm of emotions, unconscious motivations, and their impact on behaviours. This exploration into psychodynamics reveals how deeply embedded emotions can profoundly impact our lives without us even recognising them.
We will delve into how past trauma influences current behaviours, the role of implicit emotional memories, and the challenging yet rewarding journey of psychodynamic psychotherapy.
Join us as we explore Donnie Dunn’s psychodynamic world in "Baby Reindeer" and understand the profound impact of trauma and self-sabotage on human behaviour.

Hmm, sometimes the truth is overwhelming. The movie sounds veery confronting, this video gives us an interesting overall perspective.
Unravelling everything in the subconscious obviously is a mind field of challenges.
Sometimes it seems best, better if people are better normalised n learn to operate, ever so imperfectly in everyday life.
The movie, very concerning n not light viewing obviously suits some to endevour to watch. You can,t unwatch it of course!Truth can be as ugly as sin, learning to luv, understand, accept yet not normalise abnormality may be good guides, may the Lord bless us as we endeavour to do min harm n help our God,s deal along the way, thankß for the insightful real review
Well said!
@@PsychiatrySimplified for a lot of us, dissecting the frog means the frog dies!
@@petervanrun4626@petervanrun4626 Yes, I completely understand, hence why it's a longer-term process. Change is never easy for everyone, but for some, of course, the emotions are a lot more intense. Its like learning a language - it takes years to be fluent
I love your videos. Great to watch at work between semesters at school!
Thanks for the feedback . Appreciate it 🙏🏻
Hello Dr Rege,
I like your videos alot, and i think you do alot of good by posting these .
I am also writing to seek your guidence, and as i have anxiety that has been very hard to treat, and i would love if you could give me some ideas as to what steps to take to get better.
Thank you Greatly.
A key to treating anxiety is identifying the phenomenology carefully.
Please see the video on anxiety vs Hyperarousal vs agitation -often what is described as anxiety is the latter two which requires a different treatment and contributes to treatment resistance.
Yes, funny enough, i just came from that video. I deffently struggle with all 3 of those, with mostly anxiety and sometimes hyperarousal, and in some cases even agitation. I have a big problem beceause hyperarousal is very easly triggerd by exciting thoughts or stress. It has also started to trigger when i try and use my adhd medication, ever since my anxiety started. Which is a big problem because i also have severy adhd, and life is very hard without my medication. Do you know why this might be happening to me?
My doctors and psychiatrists are not really familliar with terms like hyperarousal, and aggitation, and they only really know about anxiety, so its hard for me to get help with things like this.
@@buzzdown418 Have a listen to the clonidine vs guanfacine video - you may have some ideas in the context of ADHD.
great video very informative but the Music is very annoying and loud
Sorry about that. We will keep this in mind moving forward
Excellent and Very Interesting although The AI art is very creepy!
Dr can I ask a question off topic? Does the use of Duloxetine cause frequent urination? I started on 30mgs 6 weeks back and it seemed to begin with this new drug up tp 8 times a day. I'm now on 60 mgs and it has got worse. I don't have diabetes as I was checked over in Jan. I will talk to my Dr in 2 weeks but wondered if you knew of this as a side effect?
Thanks for the feedback. I'll ask the editor to go easy on AI. It's not a common issue - however what Duloxetine can do is urinary retention so what can happen is incomplete bladder emptying which then manifests as a frequent urge to micturate which is the most likely mechanism rather than polyuria.
Hello Dr
I have a question about SSRI related extrapyramidal side effects
If patients have Essential Tremor what is the most safe treatment option that don’t affect their tremors
Its very difficult to answer this as one would need a detailed history to understand the issie to provide any solutions.
SSRI related EPSE is rare - if it does occur it can indicate a dopaminergic ‘deficit’ - so the clinician can take a history to rule out these aspects. Age > 65 this issue may be more common - in younger individuals in context tif anxirgh / depression can occur in ADHD etc. Or ifvascular risk factors are present - diabetes, HT, smoking etc. Ps not advice
@@PsychiatrySimplified I mean that patient have movement disorder like ET and also have mental health issues so can we give him SSRI - SNRI medication oor it will make their tremors worse by stimulating serotonergic receptors in inferior olive neurons
@@Medsyria1 can't answer that - SSRIs can worsen a tremor in some of the vulnerability is present. This is more likely at higher doses. However presence of anxiety itself van worsen essential tremor as well. So a risk benefit analysis
@@PsychiatrySimplified Thank you for your informative answer 🌹
Good video and explanations as always. But AI "art" is not cool
I'll pass on the feedback to the editor. What specifically wasn't cool
@@PsychiatrySimplifiedit was overkill ie too much!
@@PsychiatrySimplified Not only is it overkill (and, IMHO, not aesthetically pleasing), I personally dislike it for ethical reasons
Example timestamps of overkill images: 3:50 and 4:20
@@alexschrijnemaekers8067 yes we have taken that into account - the editor has acknowledged this. Thanks for the feedback. We appreciate it
