The absolute master of polymetric, unique time signatures. It never gets old watching drummers try to figure out his time signatures and giving up. The complete heir to Neil Peart and it's easy to see his influence. This song is a complete showcase for him, and deservedly so. What might be more amazing is the fact that Danny is 58 yrs. old when this was recorded. Tool is simply an experience. Danny is simply one of the best drummers alive today.
I saw these guys back in 96 when Danny was 24 years younger. The man is still a beast but back then he looked like a statue carved from marble. He played the whole show in naught but a loincloth. During the infamous 46&2 solo he would hit the drums and snares so hard he would be busting sticks left and right, yet would fluidly grab another stick and keep going without missing a thing. Danny truly is something near inhuman.

Because you asked about time signatures: Tool has a habit of changing up rhythms multiple times throughout a song. Lateralus had a 9-8-7 signature that kept repeating (which is the 16th step of the fibonacci sequence, which that whole song is written around).
Amazing to hear this is your 2nd Tool song. Welcome to the rest of your life. Also, I totally love his backhand of the cymbals when Maynard sings "be-yond", so smooth. (14:20 of this video)
Danny is rightfully, and affectionately known as "The Octopus", because of his ability to be seemingly everywhere at once. A fun fact about octopi is that they 9 brains (one for itself, and one for each limb), which would totally explain Danny's ability for each limb to exist independently in its own time signature.

59yr-old 6'5" Danny Carey there with *all* the mesmerising polymeter/polyrhythm thru the central section, then slapping the absolute sh!t out of the kit towards the end with the aplomb of a gifted teenager who's just found his calling in life! LOL Tremendous. :)
Now people, I love Danny as much as everyone who appreciates what he has done with Tool, clinics and just jamming randomly with beginner's. I'm actually concerned about Danny being over rated from the excitement he brings through his talent. Yes, he does a great performance when he's behind a kit and can pretty much play absolutely anything you ask. With that said, please don't fanboy or fangirl out and overhype him. I know it's hard to do but respect him as a human and just enjoy what he brings to the table. Even though his ability is an Extra Terrestrial performance. One more thing I ask is that if you hype Danny, please hype Adam, Justin and Maynard. Also pre-Justin is Paul D'Amour on bass. Lest we forget Paul.
@@sammbobdylan Awww dammit, your interrupting a conscience effort of 100% gettin along with random people. Now it's all screwed up. THESE....NEVER....GET.....OLD. The reaction is the same EVERY SINGLE time. 1) "Wait...what time signa....." 2) the tiny, clean fills sneak in, knowing smiles creep across their face, "this is gonna be good." 3) by around 6:00 minutes, it's a done deal. Your comment very early on saying that you would watch this offline with your mate is perfect premonition. Full credit for recognizing that so very, very quickly. Also enjoyed the "I'm reconsidering my life choices" furrowed brow and sinking your head into your hands not long after. The consistency of these reactions from a broad spectrum of drummers is very telling.
Welcome to the world of Tool mate! Fkn amazing band. I've watched many reactions to this drum cam vid. I love that you appreciate Danny! He Is a magician.
When the verse starts they are resolving 33 over 8 in a pattern that one can count as 5 over 8, 11 over 8, 12 over 8 and 5 over 8 being looped. It is a theme that is reappearing - with the complexity that they shift where they place the accents of the polymetric theme. So it takes a while to get the headbanging from looking wobbly :O. Danny studied tabla drums with and Indian master for years (the masters of creating the craziest polymetrics and spin them polyrhythmically that may take 5 or more cycles to resolve itself). With the added complexity that Danny, of course, moves his arms independently to place his independently moving wrists-metrics over ever-changing drums and pads - like in the intermezzo building up in the middle there. His biggest trick is, however - making polymetrics feel so damned groovy and organic - instead of planned and calculated. Don't count. Just let go and feel it.
5, 11, 12, 5? I've always counted it 14/8 + 14/8 + 5/8. With the third repetition (when the guitar plays a variation) in each verse being a variant of 14/8 + 14/8 + 6/8.
@@TheHomieFedSmoker I’ve read, and it makes sense to me , only just😂….it’s 12/8 - 11/8 - 10/8 then back around again. So count 12 11 10. Feels right 🤷🏻♂️
Great video mate. 🤘🍺👍💜 I’ve watched all of the “Pneuma” reaction videos and to me, yours is the best. Too many cats out there try analyzing his varying time sigs and rarely do they get it right. You’ve got them all beat because you’re humble about what you know and do not know and this is very refreshing. Plus it proves that you’re the only one doing reaction videos that isn’t narcissistic. 😂 Answering your primary question about how much of this is muscle memory. A ton of it, but that’s still oversimplifying what’s going on. The muscle memory has to be there or you’ll never be in position to hit all of these notes, but the brain is razor focused because he has to think ahead to know when and where he needs to be when the changes happen. It’s mega difficult with Tool because the changes are so often. The polymeter section in the middle section is a perfect example. Watch his right hand throughout the entire section, and how the pattern changes. For example, at the end of that section he plays 5 drums with the right hand (all double strokes too, which is way harder) then he moves the pattern to 4 drums, then 3, then to 2 before the big punch. On top of that being insanely hard to play, it shows exactly how drummers can write to build energy and tension, leading up to a dramatic change. He narrowed it from 5 to 4 then 3 and 2 and that creates a vibe where it feels like the walls are closing in, and then BOOM! So it’s a ton of muscle memory but it’s also focus on the highest level. This video is a perfect instructional video for any and all drummers, and not just because of the complexity. The big lesson here is that Adam writes guitar riffs and he’s not thinking of a beat or time sigs at all (most guitarists write in 2’s, 4’s & 8’s) Adam just writes the riff that he wants with the notes that he wants, and the other members are able to analyze it, and then add their parts that enhance it. The point is for all musicians to focus on making the song as best as it can be. Don’t fiddle with the beat, don’t step on the melody, etc... and as complex as this song is, nobody in Tool is disruptive at all, they all work to enhance the song, the end. This is why members of Tool rarely can tell you what time sig apiece is in, that’s not how they write, which is how they end up with crazy sigs like 33/16. Another point that should be made is that most musicians read something like 33/16 and assume the added note falls at the end. It never is. Think 16th notes first of all, then think about how within a section they’ll add a note, then add another note, then remove a note, add another, subtract another throughout the pattern, and as you count it out you end up with an extra note. Yea, this is pure insanity on the highest level but what makes it even more mind blowing isn’t just that they can play to these odd time sigs, but they can come up with them in the first place. The polymeter section, again is a perfect example. Throughout that section Danny is using 4 limb independence, and each limb playing to a different time sig. That alone is nearly impossible to play, but the even harder part is being able to hear Adams riff and come up with a flow where all four limbs play different beats but they all end up in the same place, which is how Tool are able to write such smooth flowing pieces without using 4/4 or anything of the sort. And they’re not just math nerds crunching the numbers. If they were it would be hella jerky. It goes back to Adams original guitar riff and when they all add to it and enhance it, it’s as smooth as silk, despite the insane time sigs and 4 limb polymeters. Sorry for the long post, it’s pretty much required when analyzing this band. Again, great video. I’m now a proud subscriber. 👍🤘🍺 Have you done Opeth “Deliverence” yet? That’s another gem of a song with a mega versatile drummer, who’s not overplaying but it’s complex as hell, yet smooth as silk. The outro is as good as it gets.
New sub. Keep the Tool reacts coming, the band truly is incomparable and from a 25+ year fan I love seeing people experience them for the first time, makes me wish I could go back. Great reaction to the man-octopus that is Danny
Danny is providing an incredible and amazing framework. Of that there is no doubt. Adam, Maynard and Justin are bang in the mix and in time with their fantastic artistry too.
Danny was 58 push 59 in that show, chew on that one also Danny is considered one of the best jazz drummers on the planet check out Volto if your into that kinda thing
It's the fractals, man! Seriously, I love all the famous drummers, but Danny is on a whole different plane of existence. It's not even fair to put him in the same league with the other greats!
Welcome to TOOL. It’s good for you. Things will never be the same, in a good way. They’re up on that same echelon as Sabbath. It’s perfectly acceptable to worship both! New subscriber.
Subbed, epic reaction. Hearing danny is one thing. Seeing the human octopus is another thing entirely. Love sabbath huge influence on me musically and of course tool. Its funny you mention Bonham anyone else think hes ready for tools no quarter of led zepplin cover?. Stank faces at the ready
I envy you..... big time. Such a nice journey ahead of you. Diving into the wonders of the tool universum. You're in for a colorfull MDMA musical trip. No need to do drugs when listening to tool, it's already close to an OD.
I think you hit the nail on the head there, saying he's a whole sound of music himself. One of the most defining things I find in Tool songs is that, unlike other bands where you can recognise a song for it's guitar riffs, with Tool, it's the drums. They're not just a "beat" that's in the background, they're their own, living, fluid element that more often than not stands out above all of other other instruments.
Danny is the greatest drummer to date. People in older generations do not want to admit it, but he is. He definitely learned from and was inspired by the early drummers. But he is now the setter of the bar. In respect to all drummers, Danny is now setting the greatest technical and rhythmical bar in all history of mankind....And how old is he again?
Danny "Freak of Nature Poly Rythmn" Carey the absolute best, definitely up to my top 3 for awhile. What I dig most is how he is able to take us to such tribal spaces inside music we can relate to. It is extraordinary what he does and how insanely easy he makes it look....seriously! Great reaction my friend, this video never get's old too me mate, Cheers...
When I played percussion in marching band in High School, I played the quads and quints. For me, the vast majority of it was muscle memory. My body knew where it was in the marching set as well as where that meant I was in the music. You could have asked me to play a section by name but I wouldn't have a clue where that was. Put me on the field and march along and I knew exactly what I should be playing. My conscious brain was more of a passenger. Welcome to Tool my friend. :D
This was one of those reaction video's where I get so into it I start talking back hahaha. I'm just yelling "I know, right?" at my phone screen. I know you'll get a ton of requests for Tool so I'll just thumb up other peoples. You should do some Avatar sometime tho. Great band. Lots of energy.
Great audio quality on the Danny Carey video. Sometimes people have it the sound too low. I felt every drum beat while watching you react to it. Little things like that really make a big difference on our end.
This was easily one of the 5 best concerts I’ve ever seen. He’s only wearing that Celtics uniform because Danny is a hardcore old school Lakers fan. This closed out set 1 and he came out for set 2 in a Lakers uni for the pure comedy of getting booed in Boston Garden. He was laughing his ass off going back to the drums to destroy for another hour. #1 concert though is Pearl Jam in like 2002ish at Great Woods in Massachusetts which I’ve heard Eddie Vedder considers one of their best shows ever. They encored Yellow Leadbetter and every band member left the stage and Mike McCready did a 10+ minute guitar solo that had people, myself included, in literal tears. And that was AFTER 3+ hours of perfect music.
Inkface ur reactions in this vid is priceless...need to make the vid of u and ur old man have a few drinks and listen to TOOL...dan the man can drum for a man that could be in the N.B.A. glad he chosen music ☮️
Love your tats first off, second, tool is hands down the coolest band. The level of detail in the lyrics and song structures are second to none. Definitely a rabbit hole, and i absolutely LOVE watching people go down it for the first time. Enjoy!!

Dude, your facial expressions are so familiar to me. I hang out with a lot of musicians, and all the ones I've showed this video to had exactly the same reaction you did. Tool, in particular Danny Carey, are definitely one of the most inspiring bands I've ever known. Definitely up there with Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, The Who, and jazz legends of old.
Mate I play horn in orchestras and I pride myself on working out time signatures in Tool songs, there's a point in Pneuma (about 7 mins into your video) where I still after many listens have no fucking clue what's going on! Genius
The whole thing on muscle memory and such, the band has stated previously that with Danny they give him some leeway on live performances to toy around a little with his playing so long as it isn't so structurally different than they're used to so it doesn't throw off their timing, because Danny will get bored playing the same thing over and over each night - and you'll pick up on some of those small changes (different fill order from time to time, different fills completely - extended solos, but all still within an overall timing sum to be equivalent) if you hear a side-by-side of Danny's live playing against the album recording of the songs. Imagine that though, it's actually muscle memory that Danny is trying to avoid. He wants the songs to feel more fresh and unique each time, so instead of just relying on muscle memory, he'll make it *harder* on himself just to maintain the excitement of playing music.
You might want to check out Porcupine Tree and especially Anesthetize live from Tillburg for more great live performance. It's long, but I can guarantee that you won't even notice the length when you start the song. ;) Also Gavin Harrison on the drums is epic!
Ive said this before but danny carey is actually honest to god jedi. He does not think which drum should be played, it occurs to him through the frorce just before it has to happen.
It’s in like 14/8 and 19/8 in the first part then changes to 5/8, it’s all over the place man. Add the Swiss triplet in there as well and it’s just bananas.

59yr-old 6'5" Danny Carey there with *all* the mesmerising polymeter/polyrhythm thru the central section, then slapping the absolute sh!t out of the kit towards the end with the aplomb of a gifted teenager who's just found his calling in life! LOL Tremendous. :)
Yours was the BEST reaction video of this video that I've seen! Well done. "Well done Lad" was my favorite comment. Cheers mate!
Much appreciated Wheels have a great day mate.
So glad Danny is getting his due...he has been killing it for 25 years..happy you enjoyed it!
let me do the internet here!
People: so and so is the greatest drummer alive …
Danny : Hold my eight beers !
Lol octoholic!!!
NINE! You're forgetting 1
Everyone put down your beers and after we strangle the dumb out of this guy, hand him a beer and we can resume our united appreciation for Mr Octoholic Danny the drummer from another mother.
I hype for tool brah! i made a comment on Pneuma drumcam reaction .......this is danny's show..... What else do you expect?
and don't judge me what to do... I am not talking shit fan....like you... ! i just give my love to my admire person....in my own style...
I am not drummer and i don't even know how to read drum transcription .....before i listened to TOOL .......
but now can play Eulogy bridge because of Mr Danny ...... My appreciation comes from my effort .....you got that brah!
I am TOOL fan ....and i am not talking shit.....peace ✌️
I loved watching your reaction to this! I have seen most reactions to this song. I appreciated your analysis . Watching your right hand twitching to the beat was great; it showed you're genuine in your reaction. Meaning, not just for the sake of reacting for views. Thank you from one of the Tool Army Members (for life)!! You got a new subscriber. Do MORE TOOL!!
I think it's how he does his own thing while accompanying every other instrument along with the vocals. 1 in a billion he is. He's not only keeping time, in off time.. but making everyone better in the same moment😳🤯 One of the greatest hands down
THESE....NEVER....GET.....OLD.
You just got a big fat like from Texas man. Good reaction, I can see you were watching and listening.
Facts!!
Yeah...what he said...I havent a clue obviously but damn that sounded great!
5, 11, 12, 5? I've always counted it 14/8 + 14/8 + 5/8. With the third repetition (when the guitar plays a variation) in each verse being a variant of 14/8 + 14/8 + 6/8.
A year later and this is one of the most spot-on descriptions of DC/Tool/odd time signatures. Cheers mate.
@@TheHomieFedSmoker I’ve read, and it makes sense to me , only just😂….it’s 12/8 - 11/8 - 10/8 then back around again.
So count 12 11 10. Feels right 🤷🏻♂️
That snare is tuned so beautifully.
Great video mate. 🤘🍺👍💜
I’ve watched all of the “Pneuma” reaction videos and to me, yours is the best.
Too many cats out there try analyzing his varying time sigs and rarely do they get it right.
You’ve got them all beat because you’re humble about what you know and do not know and this is very refreshing. Plus it proves that you’re the only one doing reaction videos that isn’t narcissistic. 😂
Answering your primary question about how much of this is muscle memory.
Have you done Opeth “Deliverence” yet? That’s another gem of a song with a mega versatile drummer, who’s not overplaying but it’s complex as hell, yet smooth as silk. The outro is as good as it gets.
New sub. Keep the Tool reacts coming, the band truly is incomparable and from a 25+ year fan I love seeing people experience them for the first time, makes me wish I could go back. Great reaction to the man-octopus that is Danny
The Grudge..Ending is crazy on drums
Danny is providing an incredible and amazing framework. Of that there is no doubt. Adam, Maynard and Justin are bang in the mix and in time with their fantastic artistry too.
Danny was 58 push 59 in that show, chew on that one also Danny is considered one of the best jazz drummers on the planet check out Volto if your into that kinda thing
Tool is the GOAT!
He's a freaking wizard. An octopus wizard! Outrageous!!!!
It's the fractals, man! Seriously, I love all the famous drummers, but Danny is on a whole different plane of existence. It's not even fair to put him in the same league with the other greats!
TOOL is one of my favorites. Peace
Each limb exists in it's own time signature. At all times.
Dude, this whole show was absolutely amazing.
I love Pneuma reaction videos. I think it's cool that you'll share this with your Dad! How was his reaction!? The internet must know!
Welcome to the tool family:)
Welcome to TOOL. It’s good for you. Things will never be the same, in a good way. They’re up on that same echelon as Sabbath. It’s perfectly acceptable to worship both! New subscriber.
Loved this reaction. Please be sure to tell us about your dad's reaction. I hope you thought to record it. 🙂 I can't wait for more Tool. 👍
No one can do what he does, he's amazing. 3 or 4 different time sigs at once? Thanks for reacting!
Nice to have a fairly local reaction to music, hope you enjoy this Tool journey.👍👍👋
Totally agree.
He's biggest influence is John Bohnam! Too bad he died 40 years ago! But, there is only one octopus! DC! 👽
He's one of the greatest drummers of all time. He's one of the nicest guys also. Check out him playing with some teenagers playing The Pot.
Old Sabbath fan myself but I'm all in for more Tool. New subscriber.
Its so prolific when all the best finally meet and agree to play togethr🤙
Love your tats first off, second, tool is hands down the coolest band. The level of detail in the lyrics and song structures are second to none. Definitely a rabbit hole, and i absolutely LOVE watching people go down it for the first time. Enjoy!!
Not free styling but an odd time signature for sure. Tool is a master of odd signatures. Great reaction
As a musician myself i can tell you it comes from lots of practice and muscle memory.
I cannot tell you how much joy comes over a Tool soldier watching Danny Carey boot camp totally consume a new recruit!! Wish I had a dollar for every reactor trying to figure out Tool time signatures!! I'd love to know what you Dad thought of it! Another fun Tool reaction from you! 😊
If you get the chance to see them live do it!They are one of a kind.
Best drummer alive. ❤️
He is flow less, his timing, his technique, his accuracy, his patience makes him a perfect drumming machine
InkFace: Hey Danny, which Timesignatures are you playing in?
Danny: YES! ^^
He’s more likely to ask you “which limb are you asking about?” 😂
Awesome reaction! More Tool please! Best band on earth. Check out "Invincible", "Forty Six & 2", "7empest", they don't have a bad song, any Tool with do bud. Cheers!
You have to check out more, I seen TOOL in Brisbane Australia on the "Aenima" tour years back , it was great, the album to look at in my opinion
The Octypuss Cam🔥👋👋👋😊
Off Beat But on Beat. Amazing Performance
I watch every one of these that comes out.
Awesome reaction!
Danny Carey has been the best drummer in the world since 1989 bro
Dude, your facial expressions are so familiar to me. I hang out with a lot of musicians, and all the ones I've showed this video to had exactly the same reaction you did.
Tool, in particular Danny Carey, are definitely one of the most inspiring bands I've ever known. Definitely up there with Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, The Who, and jazz legends of old.
I enjoyed watching your face melt for 10 minutes. 😂
I came here to watch you react to Tool and Danny Cary and now I’m a subscriber. Please do more Tool.
Pure greatness..On display.... A master at his craft....
Danny has his own timing, and the quickest hands you've ever seen!
14:20 you shouldn't have turned your head away. You missed him casually slaughter that crash on the right without him even looking at it.
Exactly! That’s the baller move of them all on this video. 🤘
This broke my heart 😂
It’s a bit earlier than the timeframe u posted?!
@@Eleventhearlofmars 1 second earlier, yes, I'll edit it
Best drum performance i ever seen.
Ive been a tool fan since the early 90s. They never fail to amaze me. Danny Carey is a master of his craft. 🤘
You might want to check out Porcupine Tree and especially Anesthetize live from Tillburg for more great live performance. It's long, but I can guarantee that you won't even notice the length when you start the song. ;)
Also Gavin Harrison on the drums is epic!
Ive said this before but danny carey is actually honest to god jedi. He does not think which drum should be played, it occurs to him through the frorce just before it has to happen.
Earned a sub for this reaction. Excellent stuff! Cheers
this song (as with many of TOOL songs, the timing changes, throughout.. This one, used 4/4, 14/8, 2/8, 5/8, 7/8 14/8 again, and so on.
Subbed for being a fellow Scouser keep up the work lad. Tool are unreal
It’s in like 14/8 and 19/8 in the first part then changes to 5/8, it’s all over the place man. Add the Swiss triplet in there as well and it’s just bananas.
Subbed n Liked for all the TOOL you can handle :P ! ✌️
Greatest drummer of all time. Period.
Danny Carey is on a level way beyond most other drummers. Make a video of the ol man watching it with you.
Danny's drumsticks look like hummingbird's wings.
Welcome to the TooL army. They are incredible live.
Welcome to the machine man. Tool Is all there for you.
He goes around with 4 tentacles nailed down.
