How To Calm Down Swelling From Knee Arthritis

  • "...I have OA in my left knee along with chronic swelling. Should I continue to play golf? Am I doing damage?" - James Schrimshire
Our reply: "The fact that you have swelling means your knee is chronically irritated. Being on your feet for too much is likely going to continue to cause swelling. That means that golf is probably not the best thing to be doing right now...You need to get that swelling under control!"
James' reply: "Thanks for the reply. My doc said that I would probably have to come in occasionally and have him draw the water off of my knee until I decide it is time to have the knee replacement. He has tried cortisone injection and various nsaids, and ice. Nothing affects it. It actually seems to be better when I workout or play golf."
Chronic knee swelling often happens when knee arthritis is not managed properly. There is so much confusion on what to do about swelling when it comes to knee arthritis.
Many people just charge ahead with life and suffer the consequences of quickly progressing knee arthritis. They're making their knee worse every day they keep the swelling there.
Doctors don't always know what to do. Since their training is in medicine, they usually offer anti-inflammatory injections and medications but that only give temporary relief.
Getting the swelling to calm down for the long term to get knee arthritis under control requires looking at the mechanical pressures and loading going through the knee joint.
That's what we talk about here in this video.

I have been doing Feldenkreis exercises for months and have stopped all this stretching since intense pain in my knee became a problem. I had to buy a walking stick. I woke up one morning and wanted to do some belly dancing moves. These simple hip rotatations absolutely restored my health and eliminated the knee problem. Imagine my surprise when your description of repetitive, low impact movement matched the belly dancing routine. Doing this regularly along with your glute strengthening exercises is giving me hope for complete recovery.

I've been dealing with this exact condition for several years...my doctor told me I would need knee replacement eventually and has prescribed Tylenol and cortisone injections. I did one session of your exercise and it immediately feels better...thank you so much!

Your doctor is selling you the bill of western medicine goods. Tylenol and Cortisone are not the answer. Cortinsone is a temporary solution, and your body will reject it after several injections. Side effects from these injections will not be good as it changes your body's immunology clock. You may need a joint replacement at some point but I would suggest seeing a doctor with a modern view.

Be careful with Tylenol. I find it doesn't work as well as Advil anyway because of the inflammation. I use no more than 1200 mg per 24 hours of Advil and it manages hip and knee pain well (3 capsules).

Great explanation here David ! Thanks a lot ... amateur bodybuilding here... I was wondering why lunges are painful at first, but gradually get easier after warming up...
I have patello femoral, and inner tibio femoral syndrome. My cartilage is beginning to wear out.
The glute thing came as a shock to me, since my physician and my PT have emphasized the necessity to exercise the whole leg in order to prevent tendonitis.
I guess you don't support leg extensions !
When I can't exercise, my legs get skinny so fast it is really demoralizing. I am 55...
I've seen many of your videos and really love how compassionate you are with people.

My knees were brilliant I never had a twinge I never had a problem until recently I started getting out of the house I’m walking 2 miles a day more than ever in MY LIFE (66 years now) and I’m inflamed in my knee in pain and sick. I even kept walking when inflamed I was enjoying the freedom so much..I see now big mistake

Glad I got in at the last minute to say Hi while u were live - thanks for the shout out. Made my day !
Folks listen to this man ! I did and after 2 months of the knee program the pain is minimal, the swelling is down, I can move around easier in bed and can get up and down stairs normally again, even in the morning - before I found Dr D I was struggling with even one step at a time on the stairs. If ur having an extra sore day just ease up on the exercise - listen to ur body. I find I need to move every 40 mins or so. First I do the tailgate swings and then do some of Dr D's knee exercises and I'm good for another 40 mins. I have OA and torn cartilage in both knees but I'm definitely on the right track to heal. No meds and no injections and my goal is to avoid surgery. Thank you so much David.

I can attest to the fact that starting PT exercises created swelling in my knee and calf immediately. I was doing hamstring, calf, quad and butt exercises for the the 1st time. It felt like I re-injured my knee all over again, and I had to call off work for 2 days straight as a result.

Your channel has been extremely helpful for me during this journey to recovery. You talk about alternatives that no major Ortho channels have mentioned. I would love to know your sources.

When my knees were swollen, I performed knee rehab& foot exercises on the floor. That way I could still exercise, but very gently. Within a week, my knees were better, and I could do more intense exercises because my knees could tolerate it. Now I continually do these exercises as preventative care.

Such helpful advice. I've found my knee swells doing the exercises recommended for OA by physios and the ones you say are the wrong ones are exactly the ones that make my knee swell. I do have a glut imbalance and follow your exercise regime which is building up that inactive glut. Thank you so much.

This is the best information yet. thank you for everything you have shared here. I have just had a menisectomy. Actually that was about three months ago and I’m still struggling with a lot of pain. I love what you had to say about the PRP injections. Going to the doctor tomorrow to check those out. Working on my glutes. Loved hearing everything you said. Is there a hope for me after having a meniscectomy?

    • @epmanualphysicaltherapy
      @epmanualphysicaltherapy  Год назад +3

Hey Dawn! We're glad to hear that you're working on your glutes! That's the best priority to have right now. There definitely is hope after having a menisectomy. Getting more glute strength, and using it well during walking and other movements, dramatically takes pressure off knees to keep your meniscus in the best health possible. Best of luck to you with the doctor!

For my swelling I get a whole head of celery, cut it up in small pieces, use the biggest cooking pot and add water and bring to a boil, then put a lid on it and steep. Steep and drink it. Can keep in refridgerator and heat up I microwave or drink cold.

While sitting, will either alternating or simultaneously tightening your glutes also be beneficial? I am so excited to have been led to your videos! My chiropractor is the one who suggested speaking to the knee surgeon. The orthopedic surgeon, who only does knee replacements, suggested I try physical therapy, after I explained why I would not do steroid shots. I am retired and arthritis & cartilage reduction have begun to affect my activities. I am not someone who sees a doctor very often, I do not take any prescriptions but try to limit sugars, gluten, pastas, breads etc and use herbs and oils. I have begun to do PT and the mat exercises, they are having me do, have been more successful with my concentrating on firing my butt muscles, using your suggestion! By adding your walking, stairclimbs, light cycling, leg swings and using my glutes videos to my days, I am beginning to get excited about healing and being able to walk my dogs around the lake again and explore the woods again (it's almost mushroom season 😊)! Bless you and your sharing this vital information! I look forward to watching and following all your videos. ❤ Thank you! 🤗 P

Hey Pauletta! Yes, tightening the glutes while sitting is beneficial. Alternating sides is great to master control over the muscles. Then as you get better, tightening as hard as possible for 10+ seconds would be great to do. It's great to hear that you're doing better with our advice!!! YAYYYYY!!!!
We wish you the best this upcoming mushroom season!!! 🍄

Tailgate swings have saved me! Sometimes a long drive can really painfully irritate my right knee. Since I drive an old truck, I will take a driving break to swing my legs for a minimum of five minutes and I'm able to continue my journey: it is NOT my imagination that my knee feels 100% better! TG swings, glute and toe clenches are all suggestions that have tremendously helped my 66yo knees. I know these aren't "cures" but I'm so grateful for the relief these exercises provide, and I thank you, Dr. Middaugh!
