    I generally won’t watch a video that’s more that 10-15 minutes long, but you guys did such a great job tweaking tones, gains, volumes, buffers, and guitars it was very helpful and educational. I would have liked to hear more humbuckers since I’m mostly a Gibson guy. The bad news is that like all thing guitars, it boils down to personal preference, and now I’m in a quandary of which OCD pedal will be my first to buy. I can already tell that this is going to get expensive because I will want buy several versions. Please don’t tell my wife because she will just come after you when she’s done with me…Rock On!

      Could be tricky to fit all that into the decal but I reckon it'd be worth it.

    I owned a OCD 2.0 just before this video came out. After watching this I purchased a 1.7 and have been in love ever since. I have gone through countless other gain pedals trying to find something that can out perform it to no avail. Nothing does what the 1.7 does.

    • @stratfun

      I think 2.0 sounds screeching and a bit acid, 1.7 version sounds warmer and well balanced, definitely better..

    • @joeysgear1419
      @joeysgear1419 11 месяцев назад +1

      I have both. If i had to choose one its undoubtedly the 1.7. It is my primary 'make the sound more thick and chewy without adding any gain' pedal. Makes the overdrive of any Marshall style amp sound better. Squish, bounce, chew and sponge forever. I have thr GE too and it has its plavce for fender clean headroom amps. Very natural on low gain and lets the fender sheen shine. It's the antithesis of the 1.7. The 2.0 sounds best in 18v.

    it may just be that i haven’t waded through all 200 comments, but i’m surprised to see a pretty unanimous preference to the 1.7, considering i REALLY heavily preferred the v2 in almost every instance in this video. I guess that just hammers home the point that different isnt better or worse, it’s just different.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  5 лет назад +14

      Hooray for that comment! Thank you. And of course there’s the whole other variable of what people are listening on. Different headphones and monitors sound //radically// different after all. You own ears are the only judge. And preferably in the room. We want the whole world to realise and believe this!

    • @Aleph_Null_Audio
      @Aleph_Null_Audio 5 лет назад +3

      I prefer v2 as well. I might feel differently if they had selected different amps, though, or different mics. There's always some variable that you can't account for.

    • @kochjb32
      @kochjb32 5 лет назад +5

      I also preferred the v2 from what I heard here and I prefer the v2 with my rig. I've owned both and used them both until I found myself gravitating toward one over the other. I kept the v2. Also, I think there is a tendency to like the one you have if you haven't had a chance to test them on your rig! That may explain some of the comments here.

    • @mal2ksc
      @mal2ksc 5 лет назад +2

      It seemed to me that v2 might have worked better with amps that aren't already mid-scooped. Aside from the V1.7 having a lower center frequency for its Tone control, I think you could get them to sound more or less the same with proper EQ going into one or both of them.

    • @SaxJockey
      @SaxJockey 4 года назад +2

      @@kochjb32 I'm finding the same. I bought a V2.0 first, loved it, but recognised that it has a LOT of low end (which cannot be removed by increasing the tone/high end). Then I bought a V1.4, thought that was great (less low end, brighter, more lively top end/harmonics). However, the V1.4 is not capable of providing the chunky fat low end of the V2.0, the V1.4 tends to be a little harsh. Concluded that the V2.0 suited me best, never harsh in any way and the low end controlled by nudging the bass down on amp a little (which I should have tried in the first place).

  • @GxBxN
    @GxBxN 5 лет назад +7

    I prefer the v1.7. V2 sounds great still, but 1.7 has a thicker/richer midrange that I prefer. I opened up my OCD and low and behold it’s a 1.7. Cool to note the differences!

    Things you didn't want to know:
    -The OCD started off as a Voodoo Lab Overdrive clone, which in turn is based off the distortion+. Not saying they all sound the same. The differences are there and they affect the sound, but the voodoo especially is very close. The use of mosfet as clipping diodes as in the OCD has a debatable influence on sound, but in most cases they are very close to a 4148 (I was testing this with a friend)
    -The observation that using the same pot position isn't very indicative is very true Mick. The earlier OCD had a linear volume pot, so set the same way they would be MUCH louder. Some versions have a different value of the gain pot. Pot tolerances are large too.
    -The changes between 1 and 1.3 are minor. 1.4 introduced the germanium diode in series with one of the mosfets, but many people disliked that version, so I guess they removed it somewhere before 1.7, since the new teal special edition proudly features it again?
    -About the V2, most of the changes involve that jfet at the input. It's not a buffer but it's basically like one. That's the discrete class A 5457 input stage, that's the reason the input impedance is bigger (and how it affects the sound), that's the reason you can choose to have buffered bypass (is it trendy again?)
    -"The OCD is the only pedal with clipping to a voltage reference instead of ground" from the germanium version page. This was an interesting one. the Voodoo overdrive did it too! Also, sound-wise it doesn't matter at all, it's just a different circuit design choice.
    Still, there's something about this pedal that i like. I use my diy clone a lot.

      Also, IIRC Jeorge Tripps also used the clipping to voltage reference design in some Way huge and more recent MXR pedals.

      @@NicD5150 i have made the v3 too, i guess i can make the germanium switchable if I want. Only regret of v1.3 is that it uses a linear volume pot and 1m gain, but i know where my settings are.
      Clipping to 4,5v when the signal is floating at 4,5 is the same as ac coupling the signal and clipping to ground, tested in ltspice. It just saves some parts since there's another op amp after it

However now I have a V2 OCD for solos, a tube screamer for crunch in addition to reverb, delay & chorus and just the amp for clean & it’s opened up a whole new world. I never was ecstatic with the way the fulltone power supply really introduced a ton of noise. I put the pedal on a voodoo labs dingbat tiny because it's so nice to travel with. It's powered by a truetone onespot pro with 9, 12 and 18v ports. Now I absolutely love the ocd v. 1.4 at 9 and 18volts. The ocd is dead silent and it does everything that we love the ocd for.

    Interesting to see Dan and Mick review all the different OCD’s in one overview and reflect. The OCD is a classic sound. When I first immersed myself in pedal world years ago (thanks in large part to TPS), set out to research and choose an Overdrive/Distortion and build my own pedalboard, I exhibited my own OCD by trying hundred’s of pedals. More than 300 of them actually. I recorded samples of all of them, put them into Logic so I could compare them. I definitely liked the OCD. However, I ended up choosing two others: Blackstone Appliances’ Mosfet Overdrive (BAMO), and the Hudson Broadcast. Of course I keep my hand in and listen to, try and record all of the new ones that come out, but I haven’t had any reason to reconsider.Yet...

    Loved the episode. Learned a good bit. And Thanx to Dan, I'm now rather lite in wallet. Around the 38 minute mark, some Dan Chords were strummed using the Ge & D. Memory Man..... and it was a 'yeah baby' moment !!!🎸🎶🎧 Bought the new Limited Edition - OCD the next day !!
    Killer sound. Keep up the great work guys.

    This explains so much to me. I had an OCD v2 that I never could bond with, it seemed to always have a harshness that I couldn't dial out. Pulled it off my board after a year of trying to love it. It was finally replaced with a D&M Drive that got me much closer to what I was hunting. Maybe an OCD v1.7 might be more of what I was hearing in my head

    Funny story, I bought the OCD after your first vid where you covered it a couple/few years ago. Got it home, played it, and said ‘what the hell Dan and Mick, this sounds nothing like you’re review!’ Then looked at the model number....v2. Personally, I love the v2 sound - pushes my amps a little harder, compresses the preamps a little more, but really liked this comparison and the differences. Now I understand I was really looking for a v1.7... CASE SOLVED! 😁

    My OCD was built in early 2007. Above the date is written, Rev.3, I think. The writing is hard to make out.
    But I ALWAYS feed the OCD 18 volts. It's better and more dynamic. Recently, I've put a Greer Amps Lightspeed Organic Overdrive after it. I find that pedal "tames" and warms the OCD.

    I leave the OCD V2 on my board with the buffer on. That way it takes care of my long leads, etc. Sounds great. The V2 is scooped, but that works great for me because I like the natural scoop in my blackface Fenders. I don't want to "correct" that with a mid hump. I wish every pedal gave you the option to choose buffering on or off the way the OCD does.

    • @SaxJockey
      @SaxJockey 5 лет назад +1

      Another thing about the V2.0 with buffer on, is that it cured a horrendously loud pop when I first turn on my Big Muff Pi (Tone/Wicker). The OCD runs into the BMP, usually either one in use; very angry when both on! The popping from the BMP occured even with (Boss) buffered pedals either side. The o/p impedance of the V2.0 (10k) is higher than Boss (1k) so maybe that has something to do with it. I also like a scooped sound, I have a Boss GE-7 set to mild scoop, it lets the 6.4kz (Presence) shine through on a Strat. BTW I also have black face Fender.

      @@SaxJockey Very cool. It seems Michael Fuller put a lot of thought into the V2 and how well it plays with other pedals and amps.

    I’m just an at home hobby player on a budget, but I will say that of all the different overdrive pedals I’ve experimented with, my absolute favorite is my Joyo Ultimate Drive (OCD Clone). It definitely is THE most versatile drive I own! What else is cool is how it well cleans up with the guitar’s volume control. Thanks for sharing guys! ✌🏻🎸🎼

    Stacking the v1 and v2 at low gains give some pretty great tones. I perceive the v2 as having more bass and treble but maybe that's due to the "mid scoop". Haven't run them in parallel yet. That's next up in my journey. Great show gentleman, I've been waiting a long time for this one.

    I completely agree with some of the stacking comments like the soul food one. My OCD is really worth it's board space as its not only great on its own but it behaves really well when playing with other pedals (and with the guitar volume pot)
    Love the show as ever.
