- The legend of Lê Lợi, His Magical Sword & The Golden Turtle God is one of the most prominent in Vietnamese Mythology. The story is told in many different ways but this was the way I found it was told most commonly.
A beautiful story with a tragic ending...
Was watching the whole thing expecting the story to end badly. But no, it's the reality that was the messed up part 😓

Ya, that made me feel like a crash test dummy hitting a brick wall
Vietnam Excalibur. Also that was pretty sad for the turtles
I’m genuinely and pleasantly surprised, as a Vietnamese viewer of your channel never once did I expect that this story would have an entire video on it.
Also yeah, the lake is now called Hoàn Kiếm, which is just “Returning Sword” 😂.
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@DougSharpeI certainly did.
Sounds like a Vietnamese version of EXCALIBUR.
It's a magical sword that gives the wielder incredible powers and the sword is connected to a magical lake.
The only thing missing is the sword in the stone.
I thought that
Bloke finds a magical sword 🗡 kicks invaders ass and becomes king
lady of the lake
Turtles are big, hard, round lumps, been compared to rocks oftentimes, a sword in a turtle's beak isn't dissimilar to a sword in a stone.
That’s where the turtle came in. I like this version better 🐢
Less stones and more turtles
Hey Doug, congrats on surpassing 400K subscribers last week! Also, you should be surpassing 400 million views this week as your viewership has increased to about 1.6 million views PER DAY!
Aloha from Honolulu! 😄🤙🏽
Thanks Sean! 400k was a big milestone for me
@@DougSharpeI subscribed at 420k 😂.
Another funfact: the Hoan Kiem turtle is actually an species (scientific name Rafetus leloii, as in the name of the king Le Loi), and is slowly becoming extinct. Biologists in Vietnam said that they are extremely hard to breed, and at the moment there are only 2 of them left in the world (used to be 3 but one of them died in April this year). It is not just the water contamination that killed the turtle, but natural selection itself as well. But hey! Hope and prayers that the scientists are going to find a way to stop their inevitable extinction.
it is unknown whether rafaetus leloii is actually a seperate species or are just members of the rafaetus swinhoei. it's hard to tell since all of the research was conducted locally in vietnam with no international peer review. the vietnamese researchers were supposed to send the turtle's DNA sequence to GenBank in america to get it verified but they never followed through. the two turtles you mentioned at the end are confirmed to be rafaetus swinhoei, not rafaetus leloii. if rafaetus leloii is a real species, they are most likely extinct with the last sighting being a turtle corpse floating in hoan kiem lake back in 2016
The burning question on everyone's mind must be, do they make good soup?
Emperor mate , he ain't a king but a emperor - hoàng đế
There are a bunch of cool little tales like this in Native American folk lore.
never thought of learning my country's history from a foreigner. btw great video!
That's wonderful. I hope there's a mission to clean the lake and reintroduce the turtles 🐢 It'd be a great continuation of the legend.!
The subspecies is extinct
@@sebastiangeorge7714 and so went yet another... one more casualty in the new great extinction event hosted by man... 😴
I’m really excited that you are making longer videos, I mean the shorts are good but this is one of those moments where more is better 👍
Theory: The polluted river was trashed by the Ming dynasty
Love hearing you explore historical/ cultural myths and legends. Would absolutely be interested in long form content from you. I like the short stuff a lot and i think it brings people in, though.
Damnit. Whyd the turtles have to die in the end.
Man… another reminder why humanity can’t have nice gods 😢 💔 cool legend, and painful reality
i bet it would be good for the community if they could organize a lake clean up and bring back the turtles
This is a really good fact and legend at the same time, good job! Keep it up
Cool fact: The name of the sword, Thuận Thiên, means "Heaven's Will"
Nice to see some holiday themed fun facts. Enjoy Vietnam.
Human interference ending the story in tragedy yet again
Nice *STORY* just like those religions stories. You know, like the bible.
You know that's a sensitive topic and decided to trigger some nerve. For what? For the sake of truth? You think treating a sensitive topic without due reverence is going to enlighten anyone? One atheist to another, man: pick your battle. Else, you'll be putting a bad name on atheism.

I guess that's the way the cookie crumbles!
big sad that the last turtle died, regardless, it was a nice mythology story.
Thank you for your fun facts
wow 😮 great video 👍 🔥
Awesome legend! Keep it up! You're great at this.
Thanks! More Fun Facts☝ coming everyday
Way to go, Vietnam.
why
Beautifully presented. 🙏🏻 Thank you
Hopefully, they will clean up the lake and restore the turtles of the Lake of the Restored Sword.
have you gone to the "Bún Chả Obama" place yet?
A fascinating story. Hope you're having fun there!
having a great time!
If only we would repay the turtle god by not killing it
Wouldn’t it be pronounced Lay L-uh-i?
Both awesome & sad
Nice to see you in good health.
If they have had some respect or remotely believe in this legend they wouldn’t have contaminated so heavily that water or at least punish severely who dared to throw shit there
New intro unlocked, Fun legend
While this is old propaganda, this is the reason why the lake has that name.
Very interesting story and great hair dude!
fun fact you Pepsi short is wrong
Do you have a Patreon or something?
sad ending :(
The legend was fun, the fact was not.
Also, did the sword make his horse giant, or did he have to find a giant horse on his own?
Legendary loot lmao
Le loi or.... Lloyd? 🤨
LALO?
Sword Legend
I only know this channel for RUclips Shorts, didn't know he made long-form videos...
Ikea Excalibur - some assembly required and parts are missing.
🎉
🐢
👍💛
Are you going to make vlogs about Vietnam?
No, I've been the worst RUclipsr ever on this trip. While I am still making videos while I'm here I'm trying to keep the work load low and really recharge so I can come back stronger than when I left.
As a Vietnamese and a Hanoian, this is a genuine surprise that you covered this. Thank you
I'm happy tgat i finally had a look if you do long form. These and shorts are like two different universes 😅
Hope you’re enjoying Vietnam friend!
I am!
Oh no someone please bring back the turtles 😭😭😭
Gooooooooood moooooooorrrrrrrrrnnnnning Vietnam!!!
It would be nice to start a volunteer group to clean the lake. I started one in the redwoods and cleaned the insane amount of trash people dumped in the woods.
Bummer about the turtles, but otherwise a great story.
I love how you actually go
Wow. What a sad story.
Wow that was very cool 👍
Blud is now Sponsored by the Vietnammese Goverment 💀💀

I am enjoying it quite a bit
You are a genius. Keep following your nose :)

vote for companies taking accountability for what they did to this planet or we will have no more legends
