You won’t believe how many people commented on the ice test I did a year ago and said freezing rain like this is impossible. They must be from LA because this just goes to show what it’s like in a real world situation!
Thanks for doing this video André. This was a big fear of mine with these pop out door handles, even with always keeping my cars in the garage. I do have to park in an outdoor parking lot, from time to time, so you never know. Great video.
I don't know the exact mechanics of your car as I drive a Toyota Yaris Hybrid (European version). But last in year's winter it helped to spray some WD-40 on the horizontal plate/gap below the mirror. It made the folding/retracting easier and made sure that the automatic end-stop found its correct position. 😎
Thanks for the info. I usually deactivate the folding mirrors for the winter because sometimes the amount of snow and ice will completely jam the mirror and trip the sensor, making the mirror floppy and useless. Ask me how I know 😎
@@u.e.u.e. if I was parked in the street I would activate it. I actually turn it on when I park in certain places, but turn it back off when I get home.
Yeah the door handles opened fine on my EV6 this past months times, even when we had down to minus 10 C during night, and minus 8 C in the morning, but basically none of the 4 handles would pop back in properly due to snow or ice. Had to clear it out the best I could, and then they closed properly. I did hear in the Danish EV6 FB group though that someone did have so much ice on and around the doors, that they bigger issues just opening the doors. I love my EV6, but those door handles are just not great for areas with proper winter temps and snow/ice.
Thanks Andre ! Although this'll never happen to me living in the tropics, love all your EV6 content, have been waiting one year for my EV6 to arrive, hopefully it'll be in the next few months - fingers crossed. Keep up the excellent work !!! 😎
Thank you very much. I usually preheat the cabin for 15 to 30 minutes and don't have to scrape ice, but in order to make this video I left the car frozen. I have not scraped ice from my cars for 3.5 years 😎
I can tell you on the 2wd long range EV6 there is no fancy automatic door handle and the manual say to hit with your fist and if that does not work, hit harder!
What's your process for doing that? My garage is still pretty cold and I would like to take advantage of heating the car and battery pack up before I go out. But I don't have a regular daily schedule so using the app to schedule a departure doesn't work for me.
I don't have a daily work schedule, but I go to the gym 4 times per week so I set up a daily schedule in the car for 5am departure. When it is going to be cold the next day I make sure to plug the car in for the automatic schedule to work. If I forget to plug in, or if it isn't that cold, I use the app to manually start the climate before I get dressed to leave the house. This way the car is always warm and defrosted.
I believe that quite a few people in America have garages they put the car into to avoid this problem, it must be worse in Canada! I really can’t see what one could do short of preheating the car and that probably wouldn’t melt the door ice. In your position I would be tempted to build a garage or perhaps a car port. We in the south of England rarely get snow and just a bit of frost. However this year we did get snow and when driving sheets of snow and ice came off the roof, quite dangerous! Had to stop and clear it off. Can’t imagine how you cope if that happens each morning, do you also clear the roof before driving?
Good video Andre but this can be a very different situation on any other than the GT Line PKG 2. when you don't have the powered handles, it can be a lot harder to manually open frozen handles.
Thank you. I agree, if you don't have the self presenting handles it will be more difficult. One thing to consider though is that preheating the car will usually solve the problem. I never leave my car frozen like this before entering and never have to scrape ice off of the windows. I usually set the car to 25C full defrost for 15 to 30 minutes. That should be more than enough to melt what is on the handles, but I would have to verify that and make a follow up video. Thanks for pointing it out.
I noticed at around 4.11 into the video there appears to be something covering the charger port. Is this something you made or is it commercially available? I have an EV6 and this would be really useful. Thanks for the videos
It is a charge port cover from MaCapuche.com. I am currently making a video about this EV6 version, but you can see the Niro EV version in a video I made about 3 years ago. The segment on the Niro EV port cover from MaCapuche starts at about 9 min 23 seconds: ruclips.net/video/J-jzLgAkhW4/видео.html
Hello Andre, with the winter road condition well on the way, can you give us your honest opinion of the tail door window dirt accumulation and if not having a rear window wiper is an issue.
I will make a video about it because it is not an issue at all in the EV6 since the rear design is more like a sedan than a hatch. There is never any dirt or snow on the rear window and no wiper is needed on the EV6.
Thanks for the information on the EV6 update. I'm still waiting for them to become readily available before buying. On a side note, I notice you have a heatpump. The reason I mentioned it is that I am seriously thinking of installing one but as I live in Western Canada with night-time temperatures going well below freezing in the winter. What is your experience in those conditions
A heat pump is worth it even when the temp drops to -10C, which is not very cold. It depends on the efficiency of the unit you buy, some work below -10C. Ours is a small split unit and not used as a main heating source though.
@@EV-olutionI think you might have been able to make the video anyways. Someone posted here in Denmark that they tried this with starting the heating some time before needing the car, but the heat did not make any difference in regards to the door handles, and the ice going in the cracks around the doors. But then again, if heating worked properly at that specific situation / for that person, is the question.
@@EV-olution Yeah I can see there was some success, while not perfect. But yeah the issue about stuff getting behind the handles happened many times for me as well. But never heard before that the winter mode setting actually has any relation to warm air being pushed towards the handles. Maybe the other Danish EV6 owner I saw posting about his doors being iced so much they were hard to open, did not have winter mode on.
Thanks for the nice demonstration. I’d like to echo on Bills request about heating issues. Since the onset of winter and colder temperatures there have been quite a few comments on social media from ev6 owners that are having issues with heating, especially the front floor. I have asked on different FB pages and the response seems to be mixed. Some say they have zero issues while others are getting frustrated because apparently the dealerships can’t find anything wrong with the car. What has been your experience?
Thank you very much. I am typing a response under @Bill Ryan 's comment. It should appear under his comment shortly. Thanks for watching, I appreciate it.
I have not made a video about that yet, but so far it is following the same trend as my Niro EV and my wife's Soul EV, with a 25% loss of range in the winter. I am getting about 330km of winter range so far.
I only turned the folding mirror feature on for this video. I had anticipated things and turned it on the day before in case I would make the video. In the winter the feature is always set to off.
The other 2 doors were right beside the house, protected, and there was nothing to show. As for the hatch, stay tuned, you will see it in my next video. I am editing it.
"Cool" Video, Andre. But off-topic, do you charge the car with the cable looped round the charger as shown? Surely, with AC charging, you've created a coil, and at 7kW current, the risks of nasty eddy currents are really high. I always uncoil my cable completely whilst charging
Usually the cable is unwound when charging but I have become lazy since moving to this house in June and have not been unwinding it for months. You are correct though I should not leave it coiled, although, I have not had any issues 😎
Thanks for mentioning this, Mr Smith. It never would have occurred to me. I don’t have an EV yet but when I do, I’ll make sure I uncoil the charger before plugging in.
@@mikehedrick6544 I agree, that would be very interesting, but I am pretty sure that equipment required to visualize eddy currents would cost thousands of dollars and I am just a guy making videos at home, for fun, and to help people, not a big company.

I had to push my door handle and the door in pretty hard to break the ice after the recent snow storm in Niagara Falls before Christmas. The temperature was minus 20 celcious though.
Making a video is a good idea, but for now here is what I can tell you, and also answer @Peter Schmidt at the same time. There are some owners of the EV6 that have heating issues and others that do not. There are two main reasons for the issue that some people have, one of them is a software issue. When I received my car I would get heat, but when I would precondition the cabin, either by schedule or with the app, it would only blow cold air. Once I had the software recall done at the dealership that issue was solved. A related issue that has happened to me two or three times this winter, is heating working as it should, then I turn the HVAC off by mistake (thought I was on radio settings), then turn the HVAC back on very quickly. In this situation the air being blown is cold air, but it can be resolved by turning off the HVAC for about 30 seconds and turning it back on by pressing the Auto "button" on the HVAC control panel. In other words, my EV6 heats perfectly 99.9% of the time and the odd time that I cause the issue with a fast off/on cycle of the HVAC, I can resolve with the above method. The second cause of an EV6 not giving heat is a defective part in the HVAC system. It seems that some batches of a specific part in the HVAC system, causes the car to not produce heat. This can only be resolved by having the part replaced at the dealer. Unfortunately I don't remember the name of the part in question. I hope this helps and thank you for watching.
