Risk of Rain 2 Review - The Final Verdict

- Risk of Rain 2 has a very acute understanding of what makes roguelikes fun. It's progression is fast and rewarding, which means you always feel like you're working toward something meaningful. Its loot is varied and impactful, which means it's actually worth investing in and seeking out. Its enemies are formidable and and attack you in droves, which means fighting against them is always a joy, especially when you fight them in numbers.
Risk of Rain 2 has that crucial "one more run" quality that the best roguelikes need to have, and offers a deeply compelling and addictive experience that proves that Hopoo Games can make a good roguelike regardless of what it looks like.
Never start a game at 12am because you might think that you'll just play one and then go to sleep, but then you'll be slaying bugs and fireballs all over the map till you realise that birds are chirping outside and it's 4.30 in the morning!
Are you watching me ?!?!
Hahahah i fucking love your comment man. It's 1:17 and its downloading right now😂 i'm gonna sing with those birds thats for sure
Its 1:30 am and im installing now. wish me luck
1st thing I see is him buying a fungus on commando when there is a stickybomb right there. I know im gonna like this review
@Zatchooze Naut still over 22 min on stage 2
Reviewers these days are paid to make reviews as quick as possible. Only 8 hours of gameplay and he starts reviewing. wtf
honestly i don't expect a beginner to know. it would be much more accessible if you could read the item and description by hovering over it before buying it or when it's on the ground.
I doubt if he even played this game for 5 hours
@@drftr6073 Tbh this is a good suggestion
i like when he said "frozen wastelands" the video cut to the moon. do they know about Rallypoint Delta?
That's what I said lmao
Facts
Also he called the music in the game Lo-Fi... I feel like Chris is currently dying...
Check the difficulty the game is being played on in each clip. That's some games journo strats right there.
Did you just complain about the game being slow while on the easiest difficulty?
The one that explicitly says that it slows down difficulty scaling (that is: the speed of the run/monster spawns)
I’m not sure you covered enough of the game’s core features like artifacts or alternate modes for this to be a fair review...
On 20+ min he was on stage 2
He also has the sprint key unbound.
to be fair first few stages are kinda slow too
Casual, normie reviewers. What you expect. They're the equivalent of cheating off cliff notes for a book report.
I haven't played the game, but its still strange to see the top comment of a video that gave the game a glowing review to be a complaint about how it wasn't glowing enough
I like at 4:10 when they read the description of rainstorm and then immediately picked drizzle
the thing i find funny is that i first heard about RoR2 from a instagram ad and everyone on there was saying "aNoThEr FoRtNiTe ClOnE" clearly proves none of them played the game
Same reaction as the other guy.. you must be joking right? If people unjokingly called this a fortnite clone.. what's next? A chess game being called fortnite clone?^^
@Hxxzii i bullshit you not bruh thats all everyone was saying meanwhile im sitting here like "did y'all even look at gameplay or just assuming"
3rd person shooter??? Must be a fortnite clone!!!
No way you drop onto an island in a blue vehicle with nothing and it's 3rd person?? Must be a fortnite clone
I bought the game today and when i started to play literally without knowing i spended 3 hours playing this game is really addictive. I 100% recommend this game
4:15 getting to the end of the stage as quickly as possible 8 minutes on the first stage on drizzle
And 20+ on the second
And only having two items
As someone who has played WAY TOO MUCH risk of rain, this game is a 10/10 easy. You only showed gameplay from 1 character, you never played on Monsoon difficulty(which would have made you take back your "slow beginning of runs" comment). You didn't show any of the artifacts you can unlock, either of the 2 alternate game modes that are available, multiplayer capability, modding the game on pc, or any gameplay from a hour+ long run, where you have become incredibly overpowered and is so much fun. I think if you add all of this to your review, the game becomes a 10/10.
yeah its a pretty bad review tbh.
its like he played 30mins and then finished his review
You should consider doing a review :)
Review scores are subjective. It's fine if you think this is among the best games you've ever played. See, I think the game's visuals are not that interesting to look at, while some others could love the art style. Just this, in my eyes, makes it unable to be a perfect 10 out of 10.
He showed huntress too and he did talk about multiplayer
Probably just didn't get that far
It's amazing how in the beginning I never wanted part 2 to go 3D. But man after first time playing it I was like "yes"
that’s exactly how I feel right now. should I let go of my fears?
@@Hell_Inc yes let go..it's really really good
@@CubamusPrime cool. i'll check it out!
It hurts me how this person play huntress without sprinting
She is made for straving for godsake
Despite being disappointed by the final boss, this is still one of the best games I’ve played in my 40 years of gaming. If you’re looking for a game that makes you feel like an absolute god, this is no1.
Interesting, I really like the final boss. I find the last stage itself to be lackluster. Overall I agree that this game is one of the best I have player.
I can kinda see why you would be disappointed, but its still a pretty good final boss, especially lore wise
I don’t know who’s gameplay this is but I’m sorry to say this. Is a baby playing?
i mean the persons sprint key isnt even bound

hes on controller
@@ytawesomegaming3216 Bro I'm on controller it's easy as shit to play idk what this guy Is doing
@@alfresco1552 Hes a game reviewer, what do you expect
How can this guys review the game playing on drizzle and only with the first character.
He did play with the huntress
This dude’s gameplay hurts to watch
Low key my GOTY. This is despite playing and loving Ghost of Tsushima.
Ghost is a solid game, but it's not goty worthy. It's way too simple of a game and the stealth is vastly undercooked. It's a good first try at a new IP, that's for sure. Sucker Punch will probably have the time to add some much needed combat and stealth mechanics to the sequel.
imagine thinking "AAA open world crafting game with light RPG elements" of the month would ever be GOTY
Same. I even prefer it to Doom Eternal, Risk 2 is just so damn good I can't stop playing it. Sure there are some issues (bland final stage, some questionable balance "fixes" this update, sometimes you wonder if they even playtested certain mechanics or bosses) but generally it's one of the best games I've played in the last few years.
Played it for 2 hours. It's a complete mess. Uninstalled. I'll go back to Dead Cells where you can actually parry and dodge enemy attacks and where pretty much all items are somewhat useful. And yeah, superior game design for sure.
Also feels like the balance is completely out of whack with god tier items and characters and complete trash ones.
@@Draclord35 probably not know how to play. This game is all about mobility and evading attacks. The randomness and varied items make each run unqiue. Some characters might be much more overpowered but each haver their charm.
I can tell by the gameplay that the reviewers needed WAAAAAY more time with the game before making a fair review.
What does that mean? Like how bad they are at aiming? Or they didn't find positives / negatives regarding it?
I was thinking the same thing. I come to a review to help me determine if I wsnt to buy the game or not. This did not deliver. Dude just showed some gameplay and read the description of the game. Lol. I could've watched the trailer and read the back of the box for that. Appreciate the effort tho.
@@aaronh678 not sure what OP was saying. But yes, there's not pros and cons section or anything of the likes. Just some gameplay and a heres wht you do in the game. A review should tell me what's good about the game. Whats bad about the game. Things you like/didn't like and would change. How well it controls. Etc. This guy falls way short.
This would be 10/10 if this guy played in Monsoon.
And showed more than 3 stages of gameplay,
and showed some of the other characters,
and covered prismatic trials,
and artifacts,
and...
There is just too much missing to consider drizzle the biggest problem with the review, honestly :/
Worth the risk

@@ovenmitts 2
bro you literally played on the EASY difficulty then complained about it being easy, you know you unlock a new character for completing the first boss 5 times and another new character after reaching and defeating the third boss, you can literally get these just by a few hours of playing, this is a really poorly made review imo, if you really wanted to review the game atleast get a few characters out of the 10 that are available, it just sucks you're putting in the least effort possible.
This dude plays on easy and calls the game easy
Why would you grab Bustling Fungus as commando?
Or y'know why pick it at all if you're not playing engi?
A very bad, uninformed review to be honest. The gameplay at the beginning just shows how not to play the game. He then plays on Drizzle, the lowest difficulty possible, which most dont even recomment for anything other than your first 'tutorial run', and which in itself leads you to a lot of bad habits. He then complains that the game, in tutorial mode, feels slow. Like, oh really? That so captain obvious? It also doesnt help presenting the game if you basically only show gameplay of the first 3 stages, where the game is, by design, 'slow' due to a lack of items, contrary to lategame where everything just explodes, causing chain lightning to go everywhere, while you move with 200km/h. He also mentions how much health bosses have.. not really.. you just took waaay to long in your stages and are way too undergeared. Actually, compared to normal elite, that spawn later on (there are elite bosses too), normal bosses feel like they are oneshot - and sometimes actually, literally are. The game also offers a lot of different characters, yet this review mostly only shows one, which imho is the most boring one there is.
Besides character variety and mid-lategame showcasing, the review _completely_ skips things like artifacts, or prismatic trials (the latter admittedly being kinda useless right now), which are other core parts of the game. I'd give the review a 2 out of 5. I guess i had to give you one star for at least summarizing the appeal of the game decently at the end..
Agree this is very poorly done review. I have 200hrs in rn and this review doesn't represent ROR2 properly at all
I don't think you could have been any more pretentious than you were, did you even watch the review in its entirety? He gave it a 9 yet you're acting like he shat all over your mother.
@@jordanrobinson9474 I dont care the slightest bit about what score he gives the game. Unless you are one of those people just skipping forward to the score, it's actually the single most irrelevant, most subjective information in the entire video. Or in reviews in general. So tell me, how does the score change any impression left by a visual review?
If somebody made a review of a fast paced racing game where you can double jump, glide and rocket boost your car, but only showed some scenes from the tutorial where you drove 50km/h and did not yet have any abilities and then gives the game a 9/10 score.. did he properly represent the game? No, not in the slightest.
Imagine someone made a reivew of Dark Souls, saying there are action packet, deadly bossfights.. but only shows some lame boss where he stands in one position and just blocks. For the entire video.
Does a score change the way the game got presented in any way, shape or form? Of course not. The impression left by the review would be completely wrong, and potentially turn people away from the game. Just as it is the case here. If i did not already play the game, all this video would have done is convinced me of, is that it's just not for me.
'you took waaay to long in your stages and are way too undergeared' you can pick one of these condemnations and still maintain your rant, but if you're committed to holding onto both, then you've either waged a logistical criticism against the game itself and how its possible for a semicompetent player to drone for too long across too empty a map or you've waged a harsh criticism at the reviewer in particular, calling them incompetent (and at that point, your comment wouldn't amount to much)
@@neontime8507 If he's incompetent at what he does; why make a review?
Man this gameplay is hard to watch.
It really is
Only shows one character, plays on easiest mode, clearly doesn't have much experience in the game based on playstyle... come on. You didn't mention artifacts, which change the entire game, the different characters, any of the hidden locations, the different difficulties, the challenges, this is a very lazy review. The game is a fucking masterpiece, give it some respect.
Didnt he give it a 9/10? Why dont you calm down a notch.
Seeing this I just bought this on switch with ror1 built in. I see you going hard for this. I look forward to playing this game on switch
@@shawnsmith564 It's very good. The reviewer only really scratched the surface and still thought it was worth a 9/10. That should tell you everything.
@@RevolverRez thank you. I look forward to playing this on switch
Ah yes another RoR elitist. Played the game a bit, looked at some topics, found elitists like that everywhere. Nice.
LOFI? Really? The game has everything but LOFI music, it has one of the best soundtracks you can find on any recent game.
I thought the same thing at first, but the game does have some lofi ish tracks.
Best sound track ever I'm always jamming when I play
How do I stop playing. Like literally I played 10 hours straight and it's always one more run.
This review is so poorly made and doesn't do the game justice.
Nice review drizzle Daniel
The game is slow..... WHAT you don’t even how the sprint key bound to something you just removed the most important and useful thing in the game
He clearly starts to sprint in his gameplay but go off on your tirade.
this feels like it was written by an AI
If I’m a fan of rogue-like ? Idk, but I have a gazillion of them in my library of games...
This one goes above all of them. The review was poorly made so don't judge the game off of it, maybe look at another review or some proper gameplay.
The actual goal of the game is to get as many explosions as possible before your pc crashes
The two main things I'm interested in are: Does it run well on Switch without slowdown or major bugs? Does it receive updates as often as the PC versions?
on switch it runs really good and the updates are the same, maybe on switch they come 1 week later.
I'm glad you guys liked the game and all but uh... You forgot to show or really talk about all the vastly different characters like Loader, Rex, hell CAPTAIN who was the new character to go along with the 1.0 release that you guys are reviewing.
Altogether though, if people see this video and get excited about the game and decide to pick it up, expanding the fanbase, then hey, I can't complain too much, hope you guys talk about the game more, it's fantastic!
Loved the hell out of the 1st game and bought the 2nd for PS4 and Switch. This game is 🔥.
Love the profile pic. How long have you had the game? I know you said its fire and I've never played a rogue like game but this looks really fun and was wondering if like it's the kind of game that keeps pulling you back in and you dont get bored of it after the first 20 hours or so
@@intriguinglyenigmatic1743 thank you. The first Risk of Rain was my first step into rogue lite and its a power fantasy gone right and I had it for a while. If you buy Risk of Rain 2 physically it comes with the first game as well. I highly recommend bro.
@@Riophi awesome man. I'll look into then and see if I can find a physical copy. Thank you
@@intriguinglyenigmatic1743 you are welcome hope you enjoy!
Would have been nice to discuss ANY of the abilities or weapons you get. Are there skill trees or is everything just a random drop that you can equip or not equip, do you get to keep your abilities between levels? This review left a lot of info out.
There are a variety of unique characters, you start with just 2 of them, and can complete achievements to unlock the rest. Every character (other than 1 DLC one) has alternate abilities you can unlock by also doing challenges/achievements. The focus of how you progress throughout each run is based on items and equipment, items being passive buffs and equipments being active abilities on long timers (think of them as ultimates in other games).
Wait, lo fi?
I never heard of this game before because it does look interesting
How long would this game take to finish?
Does this game have cross play? My friend has in on pc and I wanna get it on my ps4
Unfortunately no it doesn't
this video has made me realize how much i distrust gamingbolt.
It's not a bad review per say but maybe you should actually play the game instead of goofing around in the easiest difficulty just because you have to review it.
Basically, what I'm saying is "How about being a good and not-a-cliché video game journalist for once ?".
The artstyle looks awesome! I'm guessing that its an Indie too? Indie games have been impressing us soooo much!

I didn't take in any of the information he said, I spent the whole video trying to figure out whether this was an actual person talking or a text to speech machine.
Anyone else reading comments and just sighing out loud?
I think it should be a rule that reviewers beat the game on normal difficulty before making a literal “final verdict”
Maybe mentioning the multiplayer would be an idea?
How old is the term "rogue like", I've never heard of it before I heard about this game.
Considering "roguelike" comes from a 1980 game, i'd say pretty old
@@RealisticHum4n Thanks, I've been a game for 25+ years but I gotta admit there are still things I learn about history of games every now and then.
Lol drizzle. Also can these dudes like ever sprint?
Calling the game slow, while playing on the easiest mode which literally slows down the game. I’m speechless
What intesterst me the most about this game is the centered camera.
Also Dead Cell is another masterpiece.
Dead cells is much better IMO.
@@Draclord35 it's different kind of game.
@@Draclord35 but the main problem with DC is that it gets frustratingly hard. I just stop playing it.
Eh. Maybe I didn't play enough, but it just felt bland.
@@CubamusPrime It does a better job at guiding you through 0 BSC (tutorial) and early on you unlock tons of useful stuff every run. Most builds are also quite obvious (only thing that you might have to check online is which item can get which affixes). RoR2 explains you nothing at all and everything gets extremely confusing when 20+ enemies are on the screen (some of them blending with the environment).
To me RoR2 is much more frustrating than dead cells which can be tough but rarely unfair.
Is there a tutorial or is it just "See that thing? Go kick it's ass"

FACK ME! This became best games? I'm '89 and I was waiting for so long for games to become more complex with beautifull graphics. This is what 104k people on Steam gave thumbs up. Back in my days this would be considered a browser game not 25 euro game. I trully do understand concept of something just being fun but and I do believe this game is (or it wouldn't get any positive review) but considering todays technology they could polish the graphics just a tiny bit.
