    The Axe kick actually works quite well in karate combat because of the 45° pit wall . When people fall back on the incline an axe kick / spinning axe kick can become quite destructive for them.

    I wouldnt discount the backfist. It's essentially the same as a jab from the Philly shell, which a lot of boxers can use effectively. It's not super powerful, but neither is a jab. Doesnt make it useless.

    • @Nergal123
      @Nergal123 2 года назад +7

      Jared Cannonier used a backfist against Derek Brunson right before the vicious ground and pound, it seems like a dangerous technique to me.

      Power jab can be powerful, push off the back leg with a good timing and precision. I've put few guys in trouble with that one

    • @Jaburu
      @Jaburu Год назад +4

      It can actually be more powerfull than a jab since you can bring the hip in. it's just doesn't come natural to (kick)boxers. the hip-movement for the left backfist is kind of like the one from the right cross. very strange if you are not used to it. also it doesn't fit if you are squared up. now if you got an angle on the right (after he moved; maybe he slipped your jab) it fits. a teqnique not beeing used often in MMA doesn't not always mean it wont work. in this case it could just be due to the fact that it wont com natural with a boxer o Muat Thai basis.

      A backfist in karate is like boxing's jab. I have knocked out several Mma guys with a ridgehand that's one those if you train it right it can do damage.

  • @killaben85
    @killaben85 2 года назад +33

    Gabe ridge hands are used often in Karate Combat and have been knocking people out, it is something you are going to want to prepare to defend against. I understand where you are coming from Bill "Superfoot" Wallace said that when he went to Kickboxing he got rid of his ridge hand and back fist from his arsenal because they don't work well with Boxing Gloves. But bare fist and small gloves like Karate Combat uses does make them effective techniques. (Though your guard makes the back fist less effective against you).

    Just a few thoughts. The ridge hand. I don't use it, but it does have more reach than a hook. Backfist.. I do more of a Bruce Lee back knuckle which is more like a jab but a bit circular. It's very fast. Lastly, the hook kick. much more effective off the lead leg. I look forward to seeing you on KC! Best luck!

    I have seen a competitors head gashed open above the eye with a lead leg hook kick in light contact point competition (Tae Kwon Do) and I have done 3 board breaks myself (first degree) with the same kick. Wonder Boy has a really wicked hook kick in MMA. I wouldn't sleep on that kick bro.

      Yes, I ve hurt people with it too, it's crazy how you don't need much , especially when people do not expect or do not see the blow. But as you said it can be powerful as well.
      I use rear leg for it, front, not so much, but I'm thinking of trying it through a switch motion, like its a Thai style front leg switch kick, turned into lead leg hook kick. Who knows😄

    Something karateka excel at is sweeping at long range. Now, a sweep from far distance is not always going to get your opponents down (though it's super cool when it happens), but it's more of a set up/annoying attack. Some even use it to check the distance and follow up with a blitz.
    Edit:
    Exactly how I predicted. Bruno was able to get you down with the sweep. In that case, footwork is key to avoid getting swept. Either backing or crashing in with a strike.

    The sidekick doesn't have to be done from a sideways stance leaving your legs exposed if low kicks are allowed. It can also be done pivoting on the foot, bigger tell of course, but if you're good at it, it can be done... thing is also if you chamber other kicks similarly it's not that easy to predict and you can still use a jab to mask the lead sidekick, or your footwork, retreating then landing it as the opponent steps towards you... or one of my favourites, after delivering a rear leg roundhouse kick landing with the rear leg in front, or a lead leg hook kick (not the spinning version)... so you land sideways and go straight into it. Anyways, great content as always.

    Take any doubt out of any techniques simply by sparring. It doesn't need to be take someone's head off brutal just go live with another human once in a while. You find out real quick what's for show and what's for go, and really how much effort a flashy kick takes for such a low chance of success. 1/2 to 3/4 speed with gear, it's a blast and has very little risk of injury.

    I had a lot of success using crescent kicks of all things . My legs are short but I have super long arms so I would use crescent kicks as a way to pull down my opponents arms and follow with punches . But we always sparred with GI's so all that fabric helped with getting enough friction . Probably wouldn't be the same on just skin epsecially once they are sweaty

    Backfists can work dude, especially on clinch transitions, you might not have the angle to punch but if you can give someone a backfist bitch slap you might block their vision enough to get a punching angle on them or if they have relaxed to reset you can affect people. Canonier did this well in his last fight against Brunson.

    The Giga kick is really a sneaky one. I always called it the Kikuno kick, because Katsunori Kikuno was using it very effectively to the liver. Also always liked the brazilian kick, which they kinda renamed in MMA to the somewhat goofy "question mark kick".
    I absolutely agree on the backfist. Whenever I'm in the situation where I could throw a backfist, I throw a hammer fist. The backfists that you see working are actually mostly forearm strikes - same thing with ridge hands. Which to be fair is fine anyway, my karate sensei always said to not focus on the part of the limb that much just because the name says it - it's the motion dynamics that matter, not the actual fist.
    Also agree on the hook kick. It has a way higher landing percentage in sports karate because in that format, people reach with their hands a lot more. They see the leg rising and try to pat it down, but mid air it changes sides and slaps them on the side of the head that's now unprotected because they tried to reach for the kick. But in formats where people keep their hands up, you're mostly gonna end up jamming yourself (recent example: Manon Fiorot vs. Jennifer Maia, threw two very nice hook kicks which ended up getting her in trouble).
    The compromised base during the blitzes is also a sport karate malady - since ultimately they're supposed to get just one hit in and then the action is interrupted, it all simply becomes a game of speed and closing the distance. That's why they learned to leap during the blitzes. Done correctly, you're not supposed to change levels or go "flying" during your punches.

    I would say the success of the Brazilian kick is the result of someone throwing multiple low kicks to eventually bait someone into dropping their guard to land that head kick. That is how Kyokushin-based fighters successfully use the technique. I would also add the same is true for landing half roundhouse kicks to the ribs and kidneys. It is painful to throw those kicks without setting the kicks up, otherwise as you point out people drop their elbows to your foot. I think that is why throwing low kicks to the thighs and/or calf is important (it's important for numerous reasons). My personal rule-of-thumb is the higher the kick the more risk there is in throwing it, which is why setting up techniques is important.

  • @maggnet4829
    @maggnet4829 2 года назад

    I want to throw in an argument why you would want to sprinkle in less efficient kicks and punches: predictability. If you limit yourself to a small set of techniques, the opponent can more easily predict what attack you are performing.
    Besides: A weaker technique uses usually less energy. You might want to use them to help control the distance to your opponent without using up to much of your energy.
    Another argument: while the opponent deals with your weak attack you can follow right away with a stronger one that breaks through.

    Ah yeah, the jumping barrage of punches, they're so awkward, because most of those shots wouldn't land and the shots that land don't even hurt that much and the opponent it's mostly just tiring himself out for no reason, but still they're scary, somebody is jumping and rushing at you full monke, it's more like a psychological attack if that makes sense

    The reason the ridgehand became 'popular' was that you could throw it 'deep' and miss the edge of the glove and hit with the forearm to the temple.

      Yes. I've seen him do that. And a couple other high level guys in MMA or kickboxing. But for most people I don't believe it works well.

    Isshinryu karate stopped teaching hook kicks and crescent kicks as "basic" kicks, because few people can get enough power on them to be effective. Students are told to practice on their own, but it is generally explained that kicking above the waist costs you about 1% of your power for every 1 degree you go above horizontal. Therefore, to be effective with head kicks you need to practice them on your own time, not just in the dojo/gym. I would never use a Hook kick or crescent kick in a street self defense situation, as they seem too slow to evolve and too high risk.

    First time I absolutely disagree with you: On the hook kick.
    Actually, it is my signature move. My hook kick is pretty much feared at my gym. Though we are just amateur fighters.
    Hitting the hook kick with your heel is devastating. Even with your opponent having his guard up, there is always a good chance you can go passed it and hit the opponent's head slightly behind the temple but still at a legal target area.
    Plus, the hook kick is perfect within a combination. Not many opponents expect you to throw a hook kick.
    You could do the mid side kick couple of times and then fake the side-kick and throw a high hook kick instead, vice versa.
    The tucked knee is the same for both kicks. So, your opponent will not be able to tell what you are throwing.
    Or fake a roundhouse, then go a bit further with your tucked knee and throw the hook kick on the other side your opponent's body.I can even throw the hook kick in in-fight, because other than the roundhouse kick, I can adjust the bending of my lower thigh with the hook kick. Especially if you for example throw a punch combo and finish it with a hook shot left, your hip and body is perfectly adjusted to follow up with a fast left hook kick.
    You are right, executing a powerful hook kick might have you land in an awkward and vulnerable position. However, it is all a matter of control. Keep your knee up after snapping your hook kick out. You can then even follow up with a devastating side kick.
    Depending on your flexibility you can even use the tucked knee as a guard in front of your face. See BILL SUPERFOOT WALLACE.
    Moreover, I think the hook kick can be a knock-out kick just due to speed and target area. So, you might not necessarily need to overturn your hip and leg while throwing the hook kick to create more power.

    You can make the hook kick more powerful by adding a similar hip rotation like you do with the side kick, but it takes a lot of training and skill. Sports karate guys of course don't do it like that in order to avoid warnings

    The normal hook kick can work from the front foot. With the back leg like shown in the video it is not a very good technique. Same goes for the side/back kick. The front foot and spinning variations work. But the rear leg side kick does not (most of the time)

    Idk, hook kick may be not the most powerful kick of all, but could be ridiculously powerful and dangerous, you just have to build a proper kinetic chain for it.
    The way you showed it, it wouldn't hurt anyone, but done with upper body reverse - whole another story.
    It's danger is it's sneakiness. It starts as a usual rear leg roundhiuse, but lands from another side.
    So I definitely wouldn't disregard this technique. Heel to the temple, or to a jaw is always a bad experience.
