    You seem to be reading my mind at the moment with these reviews, all the shoes I’ve been looking at or buying, and there you are. 😆
    My Magna lite WR SG came last week. Taken them out 3 times so far and really digging them!
    The non-WR version of this shoe got really good feedback, but I’ve heard many people express concerns about the breathability of this WR version in summer.
    I’m not worried about that, these feel pretty airy to me, replace the thermal insole for a start!
    Plus with the WR you have a more versatile, trail shoe you can wear in the spring/fall too for when you get caught out with the weather.
    The high flexibility and ground feel of this SG sole surprised me and I love it.
    I haven’t been impressed with the rigidity of the sole (and ankle) of some of the vivo hiking boot options tbh.
    But this Magna is ace, I could go all day in these bad boys.

      @AndrewFolts  8 месяцев назад

      Yea, I could see it getting a little steamy at like 80-90º in the summer, but otherwise it's super versatile. Def loving the SG tread, it's really flexible and grippy. Just makes you want to take off!

  • @handinhandcreative

    Thanks, bud. I was just looking at these to replace my gobis for trail running. And maybe something a bit more aggressive for diverse trails. I was hoping you mentioned the running bit and I’m so glad you did, because on the site I was thinking,… “i could run in those!” Ha. As always, you’re killing it. Much love dude!

    • @AndrewFolts
      @AndrewFolts  6 месяцев назад

      Yea, I could see you liking them after the Gobi's. Bear in mind that they won't work as well for roads, because the deep lugs will get chewed up a lot faster than the Gobi's flatter sole. But def a trail beast. The Vivo Trail Knit would be another good pick. Not as grippy for heavy mud, but more versatile for all terrain.

    Thanks for the video, recently started consuming your stuff after doing research for my second season of climbing CO 14ers. One interesting thing I noted is that Vivo shoes across the board seem to be pretty heavy in comparison to other brands. Not sure if they weigh shoes differently or just more quality materials but yeah.

    • @AndrewFolts
      @AndrewFolts  8 месяцев назад +1

      Depends on the model. For example, the Magna's are only 332 grams for size 44 and the Softstar Switchback (a similar boot) is 383 grams. I do like the Magna series more than the Tracker series for agility, but sometimes a heavier boot is nice when you're on hardcore terrain.

    • @HackSparrow8
      @HackSparrow8 8 месяцев назад

      @@AndrewFolts yeah I think there are just a so many variables that go into the weight. Recently I ordered the Lems Primal Pursuit Mid Waterproof which is 334g and has some padding. Was a little hesitant to go all the way to Vivobarefoot for hiking. So will see how it goes!

    How is this compared to the Magna Forest Esc ?

    • @AndrewFolts

      The sole is lighter, more flexible, and better on soft ground, while the Magna ESC is heavier and more protective for extreme rocky terrain.

  • @Moving4Well
    @Moving4Well 8 месяцев назад

    Watching from the UK, your reviews are so damn good. Whats your view on the breathability compared to day the magna forest esc? Which do you thibk would be a better multi-purpose shoe not just for the wet and mud? Thanks! 😊

    • @AndrewFolts
      @AndrewFolts  8 месяцев назад +1

      The ESC sole is better for mixed terrain, but it's also thicker and heavier feeling. I can run in the Magna Lite, but not in a ESC tread. Breathability is slightly better with the Lite, because it's so thin. That said, if you're on firm ground more than 50% of the time I'd go with an ESC or FG sole.

    • @Moving4Well
      @Moving4Well 8 месяцев назад

      @@AndrewFolts thanks so much for replying 😀. Ive also considered the Decon FG2 - do you think I'd be compromising a lot regarding water resistance compared to the Magna Forrest ESC or the Tracker Forrest ESC? I don't make a habit of jumping in puddles, but I spend a lot of time out with my kids in parks and woods in the wet.

    • @AndrewFolts
      @AndrewFolts  8 месяцев назад +1

      @@Moving4Well The Decon's water resistance is still good being leather. and you can treat it with beeswax. You'd just have to watch out for water splashing up onto the sock liner tongue at the top, which could get wet.

      My foot's 10.5 in long and the 11 fits me with room at the toe. If your foot is 9.5, it seems like 11 would be too long. Vivo's are fairly roomy in length.

    Great analysis as always. I just wanted to ask, how does the water resistance compare to the Magna Forest ESC? The ESC gets water through the wool collar when submerged. Is it the same with the WR or have they used a different material there that's more water resistant?
    The WRs are discounted right now and I was thinking of getting them to use in the Rain and walking through puddles etc. I need them to be able to handle at least a few minutes of submersion in the water. Do you think they're sufficiently more waterproof than the ESC to warrant a buy? Thanks!

    • @AndrewFolts
      @AndrewFolts  7 месяцев назад +2

      Yea, water will still come through the collar if you're in a deep puddle, say. No "water-resistant" shoe is going to survive two minutes of submersion, They're really only meant for rain and shallow puddles, wet grass, etc. The resistance is similar to my Magna FG's, which shed water well, but will soak through eventually standing too long in deep puddles.

    • @CptAngelADVlogs

First time walking through wet morning grass, my feet were soaked within the first 2 holes of disc golf. Super bummed because I bought 2 colors😫
      Still love them but they’re useless in wet conditions. Really wanted these for damp winter Michigan days. Oh well

    Great review! I just got these (size 11) and I'm finding that my left big toe (left foot is about 1cm bigger than my right) is sitting right at the point where the material changes from the soft fabric to the harder material and I found it a bit irritating and restrictive when my toe moves up while walking. Do you think that might get better with more wear or its probably a bit tight?

    • @AndrewFolts
      @AndrewFolts  5 месяцев назад +1

      It's hard to say. One thing you can try is gently stuffing a sock into the front of the shoe when you're not using it to stretch out the material a bit. Taking shorter strides can also lessen how much your feet bend and mitigate rubbing to some extent. Better your your body, anyways.

    • @kaushlaks
      @kaushlaks 5 месяцев назад

      @@AndrewFolts that's a good idea. As an fyi, another issue I have found is, with the charcoal color, and red insides, the color leaches onto your socks when you sweat. I imagine that might stop after a couple of wears though

    Hi Andrew. have you posted the update to this yet? I have two pairs of Magna's sitting in boxes on my floor. I normally take a UK 42 but Vivo's sizing suggested the 7 for me so I took both to see which fitted the best. How are these barefoot shoes meant to fit? I have really wide feet, hence why I'm trying Vivo. The 7 is fine if barefoot or thin socks but if I usemy hiking socks then I have to use the larger size. Which one??? The larger size feels a little like Flappy the Clown and the strengthening on the laces seems to bite when I step forwards. Any wisdom on barefoot shoes, socks, no socks or the Magnas would be much appreciated.

    • @AndrewFolts
      @AndrewFolts  4 месяца назад

      Hey Karl, here's my full review: ruclips.net/video/p1Ufraxz7z8/видео.html As for width, that's a tough one. Vivo's are wide but not extra-wide, so the size might be the solution if you need thick socks. Alternatively, you could wear thinner Injinji merino wool toe socks, which are super warm but don't take up as much room. ruclips.net/video/_e6BC2vfl4w/видео.html They're all I've worn for like seven years.

      I bought the primus trail 2 aswell and the decon fg2. ( down goes my bank account!) but I’m only going to keep 2 out of the 3 pairs so I’m just deciding between them.
      I love the decon so I will keep them but just deciding between primus and magna- primus seems more useful to varied terrain/ I live in Australia so not a lot of wet muddy walks where I am but the tread of the Magna seems super handy for slippery steep places but maybe the decon could work for that too when I do winter treks in places like Tasmania.
