  • Hey! In this video, I'm shooting the Tokina atx-m 33/1.4 for mirrorless APS-C cameras. (It's basically the same as the Viltrox 33/1.4!) The question is: How good is this lens compared to the super-cheap, super-good manual-focus TT Artisan 35/1.4? Let's see!

    There doesn't seem to be any real difference between Viltrox and Tokina lenses, apart from minimal cosmetical differences and also some small firmware issues.

    Hello Tom,
    Another excellent review of two interesting lenses. Still living in hope that the Exakta review will appear one day though!.

      I feel guilty! As a fact, apart from the Exa 1c that I already made a video about, I got an Exacta Varex and then also an Exa 1 and a beautiful Exa II to shoot and review … 😍

      Exactly ! And since people don't have the time & need to wait for you, err "friend", it's much better to go out and seek interesting compositions whileas being alone. I've always made the best compositions alone, friend back & forth, at some point, they can't understand, when you check the angle, the PoV, the light...

    The difference in size is quite a bit. Nice breakdown.
    BTW the score at the beginning of the video "The Gentlemen" is eerily similar to the intro of a song called "Sons Of Winter And Stars" by Wintersun. That's a masterpiece \m/.
    Anyways don't wanna deviate from your work. Good stuff. Stay inspired!

    Hi 👋 loved your honest reviews and amazing way of explaining.
    Question, I am new to fujifilm please advise which lens would be better performer overall TOKINA 23mm OR VILTROX 23mm. Thanks alot

    • @tomscameras
      @tomscameras  Год назад +1

      It's the same as with the Tokina / Viltrox 33/1.4: The two lenses are basically the same. It is actually hard to impossible to answer the question if there's really any true difference between the two brand versions of these lenses.
      Because any differences that you clearly could see, like e.g. if it has a USB port for firmware updates or not, can also be related to the date of production, not just which brand it is.
      I didn't shoot the Viltrox or Tokina 23/1.4 yet. So I can only refer you to other reviewers who already tried them out, sorry!
      For what it's worth, I did shoot the Fujinon 23/2 for quite some time. I can very much recommend this lens. It's, of course, one full stop less, but the image quality is very good, handling is better than with the Tokinas and Viltrox lenses (for example, the aperture ring has real clicks), autofocus is super snappy as well.
      I also can totally recommend the Fujinon 50/2 for the same reasons. However, I'm much less impressed with the Fujinon 35/2, especially as that one heavily relies on digital distortion correction which I consider a fail for a relatively slow standard lens. That's one of the reasons why I prefer the Tokina 33/1.4. Also at this particular focal length, I personally find f/2 a bit limiting.

    Hi Tom,
    the Tokina versions (all "clones") of the Viltrox Design are a subtle tad better, because of advanced multicoatings, albeit it comes at a price, they do cost all more than their cheaper Viltrox counterparts, whileas otherwise being 99% the same. I like my 35/1.4 TTA APS-C on my X-E series Fujiilm much, even though ~52mm isn't being my fave focal length - 35mm (23mm on APS-C) it is. 🙂
    I wish a great all saints day !
    greetings

    • @tomscameras

      @@tomscameras Greetings Tom, not exactly, but when you google it, there are few 1:1 reviews, and the Tokina shows (always, usually) a tad more sharpness, and bit better flare resistance, than it's earlier released Viltrox counterpart.

    great review Tom.....thanks for confirming that I got the 'right' lens today in the mail.....which is the TTartisan :)...now I wonder how it would be comparing to the fuji 35mm f1.4...?

      I had the Fujinon 35/1.4 a few years ago. It is a fantastic lens. I hope I'll have a chance to get one soon and run another direct comparison. In contrast to the Viltrox / Tokina 33/1.4, the images taken with the Fujinon have that rich, classic, nice look to them. I see this look also a little bit in the TT Artisan. Overall, the 35/1.4 is maybe just the best TT Artisan lens for APS-C!

    Thanks for the good review...now, you've tested the Tonkia and the Viltrox which one of the two lenses do you believe is better regardless of the price? Do you recommend the Tokina 33mm f/1.4 or the Vlitrox version?

    • @tomscameras
      @tomscameras  Год назад +1

      Honestly, I would just buy the one that you come across at a better price. I didn't see any quality difference whatsoever between these lenses apart from the cosmetics and that some have the USB port, some not (but again: I've also seen the Viltrox without USB port, it seems to depend on the production run).

    A full manual lens is ok if you have all day to photograph your subject and it is not going anywhere any time soon but if that is not the case then you may have a issue.

    • @tomscameras
      @tomscameras  10 месяцев назад

      Hehe, well. Let's say it's a very individual thing. I certainly don't need all day to take a photo with a manual focus lens on my Fuji, otherwise how long would I need to take a pic with my analog film cameras without light meter? A week maybe ... :-p ...
      But on a more serious note: Manual focus is not for anyone, there I totally agree with you!

  • @jtrr1991
    @jtrr1991 8 месяцев назад +1

    You said that the Tokina version of the lens does not come with a correction profile while the Viltrox comes with one. Where did you get this information? Do you mind telling us how the correction profile works and how we can have access to it?

    • @tomscameras
      @tomscameras  8 месяцев назад +1

      My information is based on that I set my camera to JPG mode and checked if the JPG files that the camera creates internally are corrected or not in terms of vignetting and/or distortion. In my case, using the Tokina lens, they are not automatically corrected. So I checked available information on this subject on the internet and found that at least on some Viltrox lenses, the JPG out-of-cam are corrected.
      So I say "some" because I cannot say anything about ALL the versions that Tokina and Viltrox have released of this lens. There might be changes in different production runs. The same is true for the built-in USB port because, again, here I saw during my research that some lenses have it and some don't.
      Keep in mind that most RAW converter software comes with their own correction features so if you're shooting RAW, you don't need to worry about this anyway. It's only about the JPG out-of-cam.
