You reacted to Noir. Thanks for reacting to this one! Yep, it is about gossiping about her but then copying her. She has a blond bob and glasses, people appear like that. She switches to long hair, people change to that in the next scene, and that's when she goes to the salon and gets the pigtails. She comes out and everyone has them. And so on. At some points she feels like a queen bee, but bees are social. She's a butterfly, more... lonely. Nallari is a negative word for a social butterfly, but it's also an instrument. The one at the beginning of the song sounds a bit like a synthesized one. She's got a retro, disco, dancey style in general, especially for her b-sides. That's not usually your vibe, right?
Lalalay is sort of similar sounding to the Korean word Nallari. I'm posting what DKDKTV's explanation below which explains the korean word and song's message a bit in detail. “This is a song about not giving a crap about what others say and being yourself… In the first verse of the song, Sunmi talks about the people that are talking behind her back and the way she sings and acts in these slides in the music video show that this talking behind her back doesn’t affect her much. It’s more of a minor annoyance. Again Sunmi continues to show that she has zero amount of f*** to give. She says she’s naughty but she’s not a ‘Lalalay’ but even if she was a ‘nallari’ she could give a s*** less about how you feel about her. " “Nallari” turns out to be a Korean word that’s used to describe people who try to act cool, usually teenagers. “Cool” meaning partying, smoking, drinking, and while it is usually used in a negative way it can also be held positive depending on what the context is. “I guess the closest English equivalent would be a party *****, though ‘nallari’ is not as vulgar of a word nor gender specific. The chorus is a simple musical repeat of the word “nallari” DKDKTV explained that “nallari” has three different meanings within Sunmi’s song. - Firstly, the word has the most typical meaning most Koreans would understand, as it’s very commonly used. - Second, it refers to the Taepyungso, a traditional wind instrument. - Finally, the word “nal-la” means “to fly” in Korean and the word “nallari” shares two out of three syllables with the word. He expanded on the concept of “to fly” and analyzed the butterfly imagery that’s used throughout “LALALAY”, beginning with Sunmi emerging from the suitcase like a butterfly leaving its cocoon. “Sunmi is letting go her past, her dead skin, her worries and flying like a butterfly, free of worries and not giving a single f*** just like the lyrics suggest. People flock Sunmi trying to pick out every little wrongdoing out of her but ironically at the same time they also try to follow her every move, they secretly admire her. Sunmi is the opposite of a bee. She doesn’t give a f*** and she does what she wants be it being a nallari. She is a butterfly.” -DKDKTV
