He was in jail as the castle was crumbling around him, but guess who let him free? The Ashen One. He is obviously grateful for his escape and gave him a ring he held dear in exchange for his freedom. Then he asks you to look for his partner whenever they can. The Ashen One, being a true bro, brings a bone of the partner to give him sad closure. He is inspired by their bravery and achievements, that he put himself on the line to get items to aid the Ashen One in their travels. But alas, as all tragedies, he perishes in this cruel and uncaring world that has outlived itself and it's destroying everyone's life. Ashen One recognizes that this will the fate of every resident if the Fire keeps being linked. That is why the Ashen One gives the Maiden her eyes back. They wish for this world to be consumed by darkness and lay it to rest for another age to arise. They may not be alone in this journey with the maiden by their side, but even as the flames die out, they could not feel the warmth, as they lost something close to them. A dear friend.
