He also started using his dad's shampoo after banishment, apparently. Edit: I just wanted to emend and correct myself - I meant he does not look like betrayer, not that I believed in him being one. Cheers.
Betray is a strong word. The people he "betrayed" were mostly power hungry gods and used his willingness to work with the evolving dragons as an excuse to banish him and seize power for themselves. Allying the dragons, rather than continuing the stagnant ways of Gwyn and his ilk may have potentially seen some benefit *for* his kingdom.

I think the implication is that Gwyn and the other gods are not much different from humans. Gwyn in a sense went hollow after lighting the first flame and the Nameless King is more like an undead lacking humanity after many ages have passed. The Nameless King is likely the last of the old gods surviving in the world by DS3. In a way the straight line he took was the long way around.
NK isn't hollow though, he's virtually dead by the time ashen one reaches the archdragon peak. He's brought back from the dead by ringing the bell. Gods don't turn hollow.

Thanks for showing the Sunlight Altar statue painstakingly put back together and comparing it to Gwyn and the Firstborn. It's curious that Gwyn seems to have ab armor of some kind on the rear plate for his torso. It's almost like the armor was accidentally put on backward, but with how even the intro cutscene uses the final game's arrangement, it probably wasn't an accident. The Firstborn looks and sounds like a hollow in DS3, whereas Gwyndolin, for all the abuse he has suffered and the time that has passed, is still recognizable as his DS1 self. If the queen of Lothric is indeed Gwynevere, rather than a daughter who took closely after her (a Ranni to her Rennala, so to speak), then Gwynevere is still able to have kids, but the Firstborn is all sorts of messed up. It doesn't seem like age did that to him, it's as though someone cursed him and burned his soul to fuel the First Flame. Perhaps removing the Firstborn's deific status wasn't just a symbolic gesture, and he was given the same treatment as the non-divine, the humans, and hit with the Darksign. Thanks again, Crest!
0:40 I find it really funny only just noticing the statue of Gwyn in the first game is just his character model just more statue colored, even though when you would think at this point statues of him would look more like his whole sane self, and not the hollow empty shell he ends up being.

I can only wonder what the nameless king must think of his father, his legacy, and what he did to the world. A powerful man not willing to let go of something that doesnt belong to him, going as far as building a massive city in the middle of nowhere just to hide the dark soul. I still don't know whether to think of gwyn as an absolute failure and awful person or as almost heroic for the amount of things he did.
It's really cool to see how much of the Dark Souls series is converged in the Nameless King, the boss. The lore, the fighting styles, a dragon of course, if anything could sum up Dark Souls it's that fight. Even the way get to Archdragon Peak, there's nothing more Dark Souls than hiding the best part from the players. It takes massive balls to do that aswell. 10:56, when you see the dragon in this perspective it does raise eyebrows. Very nice video. This convinced me beyond a doubt Nameless King is Gwyn's heir.
It's wild to think that if Gwyn was at his prime, he'd be even faster and more deadly than the Nameless King since the lighting storms and lighting bolts the NK uses to move around and speed/buff up his attacks was originally a power created and gifted to him by Gwyn Not only that Gwyn also would've had relatively advanced pyromancy from manipulating first flame and from being so closely related to the queen of Izolith and maybe he would've had some abyssal sorcery and occult sorcery tricks he picked up from the Pygmy Kings and Goddess Velka respectively
This has confirmed a couple things for me. The Nameless King was Ornstein's mentor and teacher: This perhaps was obvious to most, but to see what the "original" fighting style of Dragonslaying was like is really dope. Also this confirms that The Nameless King was an innovator, and considered for this reason among many, a betrayer. You can see this with his fighting style, wherein there is the foundation in Gwyn who's likely been a formidable warrior and effective teacher, buy upon which the Nameless King innovated, and created new moves, more suited for the slaying of Dragons. Hollows are not inherently insane, rather, their attachment to their souls, humanity, customs, traditions is what leads to their insanity upon their loss. Gwyn was but a husk of his former self, only capable of fighting to the extent which led to the kiln, thus despoiling him of all else. The Nameless King on the other hand had no attachment to anything except for what is just, hence his standing up against the cruelty dealt to the ancient dragons, his divesting of all that stems from the fire, and his embrace of perpetuity in the ways of the dragons. The followers of the way of dragons are those who live at peace, attached to nothing and living in the moment
Really fascinating, I think it speaks to fromsoft's consistent world building that could maintain this level and thought and detail within just one boss encounter. The movesets, statues, everything had been fleshed out.
Wait, so if the ancient dragon wyvern thing (I forget what it’s called) is protecting the nameless kings sanctuary, maybe the helkite is protecting his shrine? Or pissed it’s been desecrated?
I never put that together. Nice work, Crest. All this time and I never made the connection that a Hellkite Drake is watching over the Alter of Sunlight Statue and we see Nameless king befriended the stormdrake.
When I fought the nameless king I realized that the fighting style was very similar to Ornstein's, but I never realized the similarities it has to Gwyn's, subtle and interesting, great detail. 😮
Most terrifying thing is he mixed Ornsteins fighting style with Gywns making a brutal and offensively brillant style of maintaining speed and damage together. He keeps you on your toes like Ornstein yet has the powerful strikes of Gywn. Its beautiful to behold yet terrifying to face considering hes using ACTUAL lightning magic and not just a copy of it. Him being thought to be Fareem the War God could be seen. Not to mention being one of the only figures in the games to befriend and even ride dragons making him even more dangerous to make a foe of.
The statue for the Nameless King in DS1 looks like Grave Keeper Agdayne from DS2, in terms of clothing. I could be wrong, it could be the clothing of those blue guys in Earthen Peak with their spears.
I remember a theory suggesting that the nameless king is the actual first lord of sunlight and the lord of cinder we see might be someone else entirely
Should've compared NK with Dragonslayer Armour too. Same weapon art, similar attacks. Was probably his armor from when he was a knight. Dragonscale set is his regal attire.
Gwyn got his son's crown from the same crown store as his own. By the time they started getting pointy, the warranty had expired. In truth, Eidas was the proprietor of the crown store, and this is yet one more detail in the plot against the gods.
I think we do need some text sorry. Where does the complete statue come from? Was it hidden in the game files somewhere? Why is it holding the spear so awkwardly?
The red wyvern wasn't just watching the bridge in Dark Souls 1 all this time for nothing! It was guarding the statue of the nameless king, its master. Now that's what I call deep lore.
fun factoid including the chicken nameless king has 3 phases (no cutscene not to big to notice but he gains a few moves at half health when he is doing it solo notably more lightning based moves) more of a phase 2.5 but still.
One neat thing to add also, the backstab animation of the spear from Dark Souls 2 looks similar to the attack the Soul of Cinder does when he grabs you with a spear.
This makes me wonder if Ornstein was actually Gwyn's firstborn and the nameless king. The whole thing about Ornstein becoming the king of storm made sense originally but with the comparison it's starting to seem less likely. If Ornstein is the god of war under the name of Faraam, thematically that'd line up as well with Ornstein's lion armor when considering the lion knights of Forossa.
That's crazy one, but I like it. There is something really weird going on with Ornstein's backstory - in DS1 we fight illusion with a part of a soul, in DS2 there's this dark Orstein who might be fake or not, and in DS3 we find his armour laying on the ground. It just doesn't add up.
@@KamilMalach Maybe the Nameless King split his soul into pieces, with each one forming a separate Ornstein. Then in Dark Souls III the Ornstein we read about, who went searching for the Nameless King, felt compelled to reunite with him to allow him to return to his full power.
@@rigorm136 This is a bit of a stretch but it's also the closest example I can give. In Cyberpunk 2077, there's a part where Johnny brings you to this hotel that he used to live in years ago. In it you can find a pair of dog tags, and Johnny said it belonged to a fellow soldier that took a bullet for him. He died so Johnny could live. Thing is though, the dogtags are Johnny's if you look into it. So if you take all that into consideration what he's saying is that he stopped working for the man just before he went AWOL. One of the best things I've found about souls lore is that there's a lot pointing towards misleading information or the fact that you just get straight up lied to, an example of which is Gwyn sacrificing himself to the fire. A lot of things point towards him never doing that at all, and actually he sacrificed Ludleth to the fire. Why would Gwyn, a being similar but separate to humans, sacrificing himself to the fire then brand all humans? Wouldn't it make much more sense for a human being sacrificed to brand all humans? Anyway, point being. Ornstein, the firstborn, the god of war Faraam, etc. may have separate names in descriptions, but it's all notes taken by those who aren't those people in the first place. You're reading someone else's observation, not making the observation yourself. Ornstein could have left his name behind, ergo the nameless king. Everyone knows Ornstein well enough for an illusion of him to work in Anor Londo after all, but no one really knows who the nameless king is.
@@Violivios Bro you literally fight gwyn in ds1, the ludleth theory makes no sense. Also ludleth is a lot smaller than gwyn and during the soul of cinder bossfight Gwyn’s soul manifests itself inside the soul of cinder in order to fight you.

Cool. I particularly like the father/son comparison. Such fine touches. It’s the little things that make these games great.
Never once to thought that their moves were similar and now it so fascinating.
The level of quality of this video is heartwarming. For some reason it made me happy.
Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! That's the video that I spent the longest time making
The slight shake in nameless hand when killing his wyvern still gets me
OMG THAT'S WHY THE WYVERN IS GUARDING THE SUNLIGHT ALTAR!
Really fascinating, I think it speaks to fromsoft's consistent world building that could maintain this level and thought and detail within just one boss encounter. The movesets, statues, everything had been fleshed out.
I honestly hadn't noticed the similarities between the altar model and Gwyn at all. Excellent video, really extremely complete. ❣
The nameless king has a name and it's Timothy Carbuncle Gwynn Junior
This is such an amazing work. Thank you!
I raise a glass to Faraam.
He knew that his kingdom was less important than friendship
Your videos are the best for drawing references, thank you!
I think a lot about this while making them!
YOOOOO! That's so cool! So the Nameless King is literally just like fighting Gwyn in his prime, but also Ornstein!
Just admiring one of the best Crestfallen Warrior's video! Such subtle comparison.
11:20 Dark Souls Demastered at it again.
Though I’d usually agree cleaning up his socks is a nice touch tbh.
Bro answering questions ive been asking myself weekly since 2013
I'm glad that dark souls 1 is not forgotten after many years.
The statue for the Nameless King in DS1 looks like Grave Keeper Agdayne from DS2, in terms of clothing. I could be wrong, it could be the clothing of those blue guys in Earthen Peak with their spears.
The blue guys at Earthen Peak are from the Undead Crypt
やっぱり無名の王はグウィンの息子=王子だったんだよな
03:16 I love how the mood changes suddenly with OS
Also the animation at 3:09 looks like the combination of ornstein's flying slam and long dash.
I had no idea those were Nameless King statues. Nice
2:25
"Gwyn where did my perc go?"
"Uhh I dunno ask Frampt"
I knew there was something familiar about The Nameless King's move set. I never could place where i recognized it from.
3:18 nice song transition
You can hear a faint plin plin plon in nameless king's theme
_Crest is the Best._
Amazing research about the true state of a statue.
• the sun warrior at the last frame... amazing Crest, just amazing
8:06 the face i made when i saw him
I remember a theory suggesting that the nameless king is the actual first lord of sunlight and the lord of cinder we see might be someone else entirely
gracias, esto es un gran trabajo.
I always thought it felt weird seeing nameless kings death animation. It always looked suspiciously like a death animation the player would have
Should've compared NK with Dragonslayer Armour too. Same weapon art, similar attacks. Was probably his armor from when he was a knight. Dragonscale set is his regal attire.
2:26 disappointing that Gwyn's flapping attack wasn't referenced in the nameless king's moveset
Gwyn got his son's crown from the same crown store as his own. By the time they started getting pointy, the warranty had expired. In truth, Eidas was the proprietor of the crown store, and this is yet one more detail in the plot against the gods.
DS1: Nameless King
DS3: Nameless King SSJ3
It’s crazy how much the nameless king changed from when he started the warriors of sunlight to when he betrayed his own father
Absolute banger of a video

I think we do need some text sorry. Where does the complete statue come from? Was it hidden in the game files somewhere? Why is it holding the spear so awkwardly?
I think the statue was put together manually using the scattered pieces lying around at its feet
even the ost of the nameless king's 2nd phase has the iconic plin plin plon
The red wyvern wasn't just watching the bridge in Dark Souls 1 all this time for nothing! It was guarding the statue of the nameless king, its master. Now that's what I call deep lore.
Dark Souls will always be my favorite Fromsoft game.
nameless king boss fight with the king of the storm was so good and still is, i miss this kind of boss design in FS games
No body:
The Nameless King: 😮
fun factoid including the chicken nameless king has 3 phases (no cutscene not to big to notice but he gains a few moves at half health when he is doing it solo notably more lightning based moves) more of a phase 2.5 but still.
Please do one for the Soul of Cinder and the Player character movesets!
One neat thing to add also, the backstab animation of the spear from Dark Souls 2 looks similar to the attack the Soul of Cinder does when he grabs you with a spear.
3:13 one of the best transitions ever
The Nameless King is the estranged son of Gwyn, hes the one who was mentioned in the first game as the god of war who was banished
Great transitions!
I will never forgive From for making Gwyn like this >:-|
And Nameless King like this :-O
Holy moly, gwyn's armour front looks like the helmet of ds3s winged knights
He untied his hair to reveal his flowing locks
13:49 WOW how did you find this?? Nice video btw!
I recognized it as a DS1 death animation and then checked DeS
Yeah but the description of the miracle sacred oath kinda disproves this
@@KamilMalach Maybe the Nameless King split his soul into pieces, with each one forming a separate Ornstein.
3:20 Ornstein jumpscare
Came for comparison but left with tears
why is it the endurance stat adds so little carry weight i have 40 endurance and when i use any great sword or great weapon i cant wear a full set of Armour (Ds1)
Use the havel ring
I guess it makes sense the sunlight altar is about Gwyn, he's the only one who can make a Lightning made of Sun Light as you can read in the miracle SunLight spear, while his son inherited the Lightning as you can read in his weapon.
I'm surprised you didn't try compare the animation of Gwyn and the Soul Of Cinder's phrase 2 attacks.
I think the nameless king might just be my favorite video game character ngl. Video is hella cool for solidifying everything. That animations comparison is nutty. Reminds me of Sekiro.
loving the fullmetal sound track, fits great
i wonder if the statues of the young squire in irithyll are actually stautes of the nameless king
I know in the DS2 is just theory. But dayum its the best armour Nameless King ever wear if its true.
(Its the armour set on the cover and animated trailer)
