Love your joy of inheriting a friend's tools! Demonstrates true humility and a charscter of gratitude. Patrick, you sre an infectious ambassador of woodworking. If chisels were pets, you be Dr. Doolittle. Way to rock. 😂
Nice rack. Inherited tools are the majority of what I have from flea markets and garage sales. Picked up some good chisels and hand planes over the years including some Stanleys that were built in the 1800s and early 1900s. Since no one seems to be teaching shop these days, no one learns to use them and we can get them pretty cheap. A little restoration and they are good to go. Love seeing older wood repurposed for projects like this as well. Good job.
Love the design so much I made one myself. Worked fantastic. I unfortunately didn’t have thick plexiglass, only about 4mm thick. I soon found out to oversized the holes in the Plexiglass, to allow for wood expansion/contraction and not to use a cordless on the screws as either will crack the plastic. But I’ve had the rack for a year or so and it works well. Love being able to see at a glance which chisel to use.
The Design is really well done. It's easy to see the different sizes with the plexiglass and I personally like the orientation. Up/down rather than Left/right for space saving.
+Richard “BrainFizz” Morley thanks Richard i really think the way everyone stores their chisels is no good unless u have super fancy ones and you like to show them off lol thanks for watching
Nicely done! Using the plexiglass to leave the width visible is a great idea. While I was watching you make the repetitive cuts to get width, I was thinking that the next fancy tool somebody needs to build is a dedicated adjustable dado machine, one that can mechanically set the width based on a size you input. Now, there's a Christmas present!
+Wood Tools Workshop thanks and thats a great idea for the auto adjustable dado saw good thinking stay tuned maybe i will come up with something thanks for watching
+The 2 Car Garage Shop thanks Scott i as well like the plexi it really work good for things like this and the dust collection on the RAS is working so so good thanks for watching
That is the best looking one I have seen yet. I am going crazy or where there worms comes out of the wood as you was cutting it. I take it all the screws was for looks. Turned out great Patrick Thanks for posting.
well Chris your eyes are not tripping there might have been a few bugs in that wood b4 i sprayed it with raid and then burned the crap out on them and then soaked it with clear spray paint to seal them little guys in haha and the screws r for looks and to hold the plexi in place thanks for watching
I just took a piece of wood and drilled holes in it for the different sized chisels that I have. I have the same chisels you have but I have noticed that mine get dull cause nothing is protecting the tips and it is on my bench. I am going to give your method a shot cause it looks like it works.
It looks great. Makes me think some of them may be apt to fall out. Maybe its just my shop set up that shakes too much from hand sawing or other similar activities. The plexiglass front is a nice touch for good visibility of what tool is where.
and when I walk by and my shirt catches the handle and a chisel hits the floor blade down I'll spend the rest of the day sharpening it . nice job but it should be mounted horizontal
the wood used looks like a piece of side rail from a baby bed..i've used the same wood for many shop projects, as well as made some baby beds into small benches.. cool to see another who recycles stuff
I don't know what made you think of the plexiglass but that was a very slick idea. see through tool racks should be available for everything. I think that's why I like magnetic so well. And who cares where the tools were bought. it's getting them from a friend is what is so cool
exactly these may be low quality chisels but with some work I got a few of them razor sharp and you're right I love the plexi fronts to see the tools thanks for watching and for the great comment
i like it , it keeps them off the work bench and as you know it get cluttered every day and you can easily see the one you need and if one is missing thanks for watching
This is so cool. I love that you can see your chisels like that. Great job. The spinning carmichael head is little creepy but yet intriguing in a strange way.
Could have titled this video "radial arm saw...the only tool you'll ever need." lol. Nice simple yet very effective project. Think I'll make one similar.
Nice one Patrick. My daughter walked over when you were putting the screws in and say wow is he making a xylophone? I started laughing....well maybe i will ask him to make you one i said.....lol.
Awesome idea mate, just what i was looking for, but i think i will angle my chisels a little bit maybe 75 degrees , so there is less chance of accidentally being pulled or knocked out, great video mate👍👍
Cool. Easy to see and chose the one you need. Kinda looks like those child xylophones. For extra fancyness magnets could be embedded to hold them even more.
+Fredrik Rambris Fredrik i also thought of magnets but i see no point the chisels are held in so good they wont just fall out , on my vid when i installed it my impact drill shook it more than it would ever move in a normal situation thanks for watching
Patrick, great design for a vertical rack with plexiglass. I am making one that will fit in an open tool cabinet and handles will point out into the room for easy access and I can mark the size of each for eay view. Thx.
+Patrick's work shop It may depend on how similar "similar" is I guess. I drilled a bunch of holes (one with each bit) in a 2x4 and put it on the side of a small enclosed plane till I made. Will try to get a picture of it posted tonight :)
+Jim Dockrell (Watertone) yeah me to i cut my self a while back on a chisel hanging like all the traditional hangers and when thinking of this design i wanted to have the tips sealed and this it what i thought of thanks for watching
Great idea, great execution & video. Considering doing the same, but adding a stand/hook combination so I can have the rack snap onto my workbench out of the way but in easy reach or stand up on top of my assembly table
Hi that is so clever mate, I noticed when you were cutting out for you chisels your blade was burning the wood. This could be a build up of resins on the saw blade, you could clean it with methylated spirits. No naked flames when doing this. Cheers
I don't think I've ever seen chisels stored horizontally on a wall, but it looks like it works well and I love the use of acrylic. I suppose if they ever get a little lose in their holder, you could add a small magnet to the slot. Are you back full throttle for content creation now?
+MonkWerks with Fr. Thomas yeah if it got loose i suppose a magnet would hold it but remember that the handle is lighter that the point so the weight holds it in an i kind of make a tight fit and to answer your other question you will just have to wait and see thanks FR. Thomas thanks for watching
I think if it was me, I'd angle the slots a bit so the handles slope upward. That would keep any vibration from causing the chisels to work their way out. Other than that, it's a great project. I like the way the plexiglass makes the blades visible.
thanks Lawrence for the tip i'll tell what I have had this now for awhile and not one time did any chisels jump out lol and you are totally right about the plexi It makes it much nicer to see the ones missing thanks for watching
I love the use of found materials. Most of a set of chisels is a great gift.😁😎
Love your joy of inheriting a friend's tools! Demonstrates true humility and a charscter of gratitude. Patrick, you sre an infectious ambassador of woodworking. If chisels were pets, you be Dr. Doolittle. Way to rock. 😂
thanks so much for the kind words and thank you for watching
Your right, an awesome chisel rack..Very nice...Well organized..Well worth the extra effort....!
Good idea putting them vertically. Thanks for sharing!
Good job.
That's an interesting way to mount the rack. Pretty cool.
Your right about that, awesome job Patrick....!
It's pretty great, Patrick. I like that you can see the sizes through the plastic. Hope you enjoy them!
+Kinderhook Woodcraft thanks so much yeah the plexi does make it user friendly thanks for watching
i will enjoy the chisels thanks
Storing them sideways is awesome Patrick! That's a grip of chisels.
+AdventuresInDIY thanks Chris it is a few but it keeps them all in one spot and off the work bench
It reminds me that cool kitchen knives stands. Very cool project.
+KK Make hey Karol im not sure of the knive stands but i like how this works for my chisels thanks for watching
Great job, I love the mix of acrylic and wood in projects. Great to see the sizes at a glance. I'll have to make one of these for myself.
Very cleaver, time to gather my chisels, and rack them up...
Undoubtedly the the most awesome chisel rack ever! Interesting design Patrick, and I like the vertical orientation. Nice work!
+GuysWoodshop thanks Guy it looks and works great thanks for commenting and for watching
The Design is really well done. It's easy to see the different sizes with the plexiglass and I personally like the orientation. Up/down rather than Left/right for space saving.

+Richard “BrainFizz” Morley thanks Richard i really think the way everyone stores their chisels is no good unless u have super fancy ones and you like to show them off lol thanks for watching

thanks i have a few more ideas like this but it will have to wait till i finish the table saw restoration i am working on thanks for watching
Nicely done! Using the plexiglass to leave the width visible is a great idea. Talk about an excellent use of the RAS! Nice design, Patrick. Looks super handy!
+Michael Lawing thanks Michael yeah the RAs works great for these types of cuts and many more thanks for commenting and for watching
It looks great. Makes me think some of them may be apt to fall out. Maybe its just my shop set up that shakes too much from hand sawing or other similar activities. The plexiglass front is a nice touch for good visibility of what tool is where.

So cool I'm gonna copy your design if you dont mind but add some neodymium magnets behind them so I can store them vertical as well. Great job brother
