- Growing up on 90s NASCAR, it is almost second nature to know how impactful diecasts can be to a kid. They not only make incredible memories but help the sport grow and thrive in the process.
Unfortunately, that is far from the case in 2022. We are stuck with a diecast industry that is disappointing, stagnant and downright sad.
This video takes you on a trip down memory lane, looking at the diecast industry of the 1990s and it moves to today's landscape with ways to improve the unfortunate products we are dealing with today.
We just want NASCAR to thrive and grow and truly believe that diecasts are a huge tool in accomplishing that.

Completely agree. I always wondered why Authentics doesn't just buy up the rights to all the small teams and make a few, like you said. It ahouldn't be that expensive.
Plus, kids want to race a full field of different cars, not the three identical William Byrons and that one rogue Kyle Busch left over from 2019 that stores seem to have.

Yep. There was Racing Champions, Winner's Circle, Hot Wheels, Matchbox, Revell, and Action which was pretty much the only brand where you could find uncensored diecasts.
I was born in 1993 and I spent a lot of the early 00s having floor races between my bedroom and the living room. A lot of my diecasts are either gone or in a box under my bed. The only diecasts I have displayed are my favorite Dale Jr Budweiser cars from special paint schemes to race wins. All of them are in 1:64 scale.
One thing I want to bring up is how QVC had a show called “For Race Fans Only,” man did I watch that show every time it was on. I also would look through the monthly RCCA magazines my parents would get.

I got into collecting NASCAR Diecast around 2006-2007 and what’s it come to is unfortunate. Can’t stand the idiots that defend Lionel for decision making…
Hot Wheels needs to get some big name drivers and make some diecast they would be far better quality than anything Lionel makes.
Man I felt this so much! Hurts my heart. I grew up the same way with diecasts. Got them everywhere. Became a fan as a kid because diecasts. Now each car has 15 different paint schemes every year. Back in the day all you had to do was look for the orange Home Depot car and you knew that was Tony Stewart. It’s not like that anymore. Like you said, you can make a kid get into nascar just by having tons of diecasts. One of my favorites as a kid was the number 9 Cartoon Network car. How appealing was that for a kid! It just doesn’t exist anymore. No more diecasts. No more driver appearance. Or random house cars at random businesses supporting their sponsors. None of that.

I’m a bit late but I’d just like to touch on a story that I had that made me get into nascar.
Back in the 2010s, I had no idea what nascar was, but I loved cars. My mom saw a Kyle Busch m&m’s diecast and thought it would be cool for me to have, so she brought it home for me. I instantly fell in love with the sport. This is how much diecasts mean to a little kid like I was back in the day. But now, it’s insanely hard to find nascar diecasts every time I go to the store. I wish they would be more prominent because nascar is always pushing for kids to be hooked on to the sport, but it’s hard to when you can’t find diecasts.
BEFORE I begin watching this video I wanted to pass along my condolences for the loss of your father. Monday would've been my dad's 60th birthday. He died at the age of 42 from alcoholism. It hasn't gotten easier and knowing his birthday was around the corner it just made the past week SUCK

I lost my Daddy two years ago to alcohol. He was an avid diecast NASCAR collector. And has some really neat ones.
That’s why I build plastic models of cars.(I do every type of car on my channel but I got some NASCAR on my channel.) On the occasional stroll through the diecast aisle at Walmart I rarely find any NASCAR.

I still have my box full of NASCAR die-cast ranging from 1:64 to 1:24 scale, Haulers and posters and a Tony Stewart car shaped rug. It's sitting in my parents attic right now. I acquired all of it between 2002 and 2012

I miss Brickel’s Racing! I live in NJ and use to drive 2.5 hours to the store every few months. The staff let you wander around for as long as you wanted and did not hound you or follow you around like a lot of shops did. Many good memories and loved seeing the store image. I also enjoyed the image of the little boy in the retail store aisle at 3:12 with the Racing Champions cars on the shelf. The good old days for sure! I enjoyed the video very much.
I still remember when I was little, the first time I saw the first edition of 1989 Racing Champions in the store. Finally, toy replicas of the big name Indy, Nascar, and NHRA competitors. And then when the 1990 Indycars came out, with Little Al, Foyt, Rahal, updated Andretti designs...

Racing Champions 96-98 packaging was ideal. Same backing card design and stand for every car (printing costs lower). It was also easy to spot that distinct all red package from a mile away.

When I was a kid, My Mom and Dad would go to Family Dollar to get small stuff for the house. I remember as soon as we got there, I would race (lol) to the toy aisle because I was always guaranteed the Nascar Racing Champions Die-casts. I would collect so many of them and imagined new races. I’m 24 years old now and to look back at it. Good Times! Still have them in a box locked away. I never gave them away lol
Great video man. Boy did this hit me, minus the siblings, this was me. I am 36 and was a nascar fan to the bone. My carpet in my room was permanently partially flattened from the Daytona shaped rug races i would have. I remember having the entire 43 car field represented, and yes, Earnhardt would always win ans Gordon would always crash early lol.i collected about 400 of the 1:64s as the 1:24s were really expensive. When ebay was in its infancy i would pick cars i wanted to add to my collection. I played with all of them except a rare couple but got so much enjoyment. Especially when you would get them in cereal boxes, i got johnny benson's 4 pop secret cars from like 20 upcs, and i still have all of them today. I saw we most likely share 90% of the same collection. This really hit home, so glad there were kids who had an enjoyable time with nascar growing up like me

I'm lucky that there's an antique mall not too far from my house. They have tons of classic diecasts and sell them for decent prices. Last week I found a Dale Earnhardt Matchbox for $7 which is dirt cheap for anything Dale Earnhardt related.
Awesome video man. I completely agree. They need to bring back companies that care about their consumers to create diecasts again. Until then I'd never buy one of these cheap 3d printed plastic crap of a toy.
I Was born in 2006 so I am a late 2000s person, I didn't start watching NASCAR til 2014 and didn't start going diecast hunting in stores til 2016 but I sometimes wish I could find diecast everywhere like how it was in the 90s and 2000s when you can find them at places like not just Walmart and Target but also Dollar General. Nowadays it's just Target and Walmart that are the go-to stores for diecast collectors like myself which is a bit of a shame
Great video. I collected many of the die cast from the 1990's that you had featured. I sold most of them when I was in my apartment in the early 2000's and needed some cash.
I'm finding a lot of what I had at flea markets and antique malls at a fraction of what I had sold mine.
Today's die cast I buy what I find interesting. It's difficult to find it as much like the trading cards, the die cast are swept up by flippers as soon as they hit the shelves and put online for sale at 3-6X retail price.
It's nostalgic to think that racing champions was started nearly 34 years ago, and their Nascar line died a slow, painful death.

Thank you so much! Agreed 100% on the landscape of it all. It is a shame to know that cars and cards are being flipped. It was always a thrill as a kid to walk in and see the shelves loaded up with all the things we wanted. Hate that so many today won't get to experience that.
Another issue with today's diecasts is that on every single diecast with Lionel, there's a paint chip on it (big example is the PTC Mold which they still won't get rid of it.) These things aren't made with love and care anymore
Lionel needs to go back to making trains

You don't have to mass produce it but give the true collectors all they want
But the problem is that Lionel only listens to Chase Elliott fans and cancels great cars such like Ross Chastain's GoPro car, Alex Bowman's 2022 Nashville car, that Cody Ware Nurtec car etc.
It amazes me how people could defend this company and to be ignorant saying when we are trying to criticize Lionel (you're so ungrateful and if you don't like it, don't buy it)
I don't consider those people diecast collectors if they have a mindset like that
We need an actual company that cares for its fans to come over like Greenlight
Sure they have their quality issues but they have it more under control then Lionel does and ever will
They don't have a dumb preorder system where if you want a diecast to be made, you have to pay $10 dollars for it online and wait nearly a year to get it also like you said in the video
If anything, these cars are uncreative, the price keeps going up, the mold is the same, they won't be new features on the cars because Lionel is cheap, and they never try stuff out like Racing Champions, Winners Circle, Team Caliber and Spin Master ever done
I have more interest in trying to get a Seth MacFarlane Autographed photo more then a diecast and that should say a lot with Lionel
The 1/24's are plastic things and they want you to pay $100 dollars for them and my response, it's just not worth it
Once again the Preorder System, DNP System and MOQ System is all flawed
It's a shame that a "best seller" diecast gets canceled which pretty much says that Lionel baited us also these Metal Chassis cars from this year, give me a break
They don't have Rubber tires but Lionel wants you to pay $3 more dollars for all these cars
And I'm Canadian so if I even get any of these cars from the U.S., I have to pay a lot of even more money to ship

I collect NASCAR diecast and I have races it is super fun like my 64 car race and drag strip I liked the video great job
I have to agree also with you on this. I started buying Diecast in 1998 and all the way into the 2000s.Sitting on over 300 diecast cars today thinking one day they would be worth something. Well I still enjoy looking at them. Thanks for the video.
This is an awesome video, man. I miss the variety we used to have, and even the lower-end cheap diecast that RC/ERTL were making kicked ass. That was the early 2000s, and NASCAR about dominated the aisle. They have gone back to using the PTC molds and I wouldnt take them if they were free.
I’m taking advantage of every diecast I can get. This market shrinking with inflation scares me that we may have an end of an era in diecast.

I was just thinking about the same thing the other day! I ordered the 5 pack of Kyle Busch’s 5 Xfinity wins in the 54 car in 2021 sometime around August 2021 and literally got them in the mail in September of 2022! By the time I actually received them I forgot that I even ordered them it had been so long! It’s a shame!

Well said. It's not just NASCAR doe cast although they have probably been hit the hardest. Hot wheels, matchbox, etc. The RUclipsrs I follow for hot wheels don't really make videos anymore or they are so few and far between.

Here in Canada finding NASCAR diecasts is just about impossible to find unless there are specific hobby stores that bring them in. The big box stores like Wal-Mart or Toys R Us (which still exists in Canada), don't carry anything NASCAR related anymore. As a Kid in the 90's, every single big box store had them. Wal-Mart, Zellers, Sears, Toys R Us..everywhere. I have a really full collection of diecasts from those days and its because I was rewarded for being a good kid when I was out with my parents. Fair deal to me!
In the mid-late 2000's at the peak height of NASCAR popularity, Zellers became the official merchandise store of NASCAR in Canada. They had everything. Shirts, hats, flags, garbage bins, school binders, notepad books, Christmas ornaments etc., along with the Diecasts. You name it. It was heaven for a few years. Then they closed down in the early 2010's. Target opened in Canada for a few years in the early-mid 2010's and that was the last store that I knew of that carried anything NASCAR diecast related. They lasted for 2-3 years and went bankrupt. No NASCAR Diecasts in any department store since then. If I want to get any, there is a Canadian supplier online who has great deals on them, but the convivence of just going out and seeing what a store has in stock and buy a couple, those days are a thing of the past I'm afraid.
Racing Champions was my favorite. I didn't mind Winner Circle but the mass majority of my collection is Racing Champions from the 90's and very early 2000's. Racing Champions are still a company that still releases diecasts today. It would be amazing if they got the bid in to be a supplier for NASCAR again. And just like it was in the 90's.. its okay to have two companies do the same thing. Let Lionel slowly produce their stock while Racing Champions fill up the shelfs at our favorite stores for us to buy year round.
My favorite 'obscure' diecast I own, referring to when you were talking about the odd diecasts like with Bobby Hillin Jr., was a 1997 Craftsman Truck Series diecast of the #01 Billy Ogle, Jr.. He literally made 2 attempts at a start that season and failed to qualify for both races.. and RC made a diecast of that truck lol Other than the card that came with the diecast, I dont think there is any actual pictures of the truck he raced.

Ugh, it's always a bummer to hear how those stores disappeared and didn't stick around. The thrill of seeing things first hand and the excitement of the first moments in the store is something that will never be topped!
I have to wait till a US family trip to get a newer NASCAR diecast for $6 and not $30 on eBay! I think there haven't been any since 2015 because when Spin Master gave the rights to Lionel and Target Canada closed, they both happened in the same year.
@@onewhitedude Yep, my last diecasts I bought in Canada locally was when Target shut down and they were on clearance for $2.94 each.
I'm an elliott fan, but I absolutely HATE how lionel has to produce every logo variant of his, just get the primary for christs sake!

Yesterday there were exactly 33 diecast cars that got cancelled in the 1 64 scale. It's a shame what the diecast industry is nowadays

I finally opened up all mine that were in there packages from the 90s and gave them all to my daughter last year and now we blast them off of each other is fun to think I got them when I was 15 now my 4 year old is playing with them so I can appreciate this video
I feel like I’m on the more supportive side of Lionel diecasts. I’ve gotten back into collecting with the new car this year and am very satisfied with the quality of what I’ve gotten from them. However, the bogus pre-ordering reqs make it so that cars are CONSTANTLY DNPing. It’s not acceptable that there are multiple full-time Cup series drivers (including both RCR and Kaulig cars) that did not even have a single 1:64 diecast produced this year.

My real question is where did everyone go? Back in the 90s and early 2000s we Had Racing champions Winners circle Hot wheels QVC and those were just the ones I know off of the top of my head. How come it's just Lionel now? And why doesn't any other company want to get into Nascar stuff? I've been saying this for a while now. But look at Spinmaster with Monster Jam. They are a prime example of doing it right. 4$ 1/64s and 10$ 1/24 not to mention having a big section in just about every Walmart meanwhile Nascar stuff gets 2 pegs and normally sits out of stock.
I totally agree with you my friend big time I've been in NASCAR fans 1965 I am a DieHard fan and there is a big problem with it if you go to a race you can see diecast and bunch of other drivers but the prices are just way too high one car will cost you at least $10 and that is just ridiculous considering you know back in the 90s they were only like two or three dollars it doesn't seem like companies are really pushing the hot wheel size diecast like they used to they are more pushing the larger Scale Diecast and the little one I have over 2,000 NASCAR diecast in my collection they are all hot wheel size and I am always looking for more but the ones that are hard for me to find are the ones they don't make anymore of course the Buicks and the Oldsmobiles those are the two hardest ones for me to find when I get on eBay or anywhere else I'm always looking for all those keep your passion of NASCAR keep your son playing with the cars NASCAR from back in the day try to really teach him what Nascar really means tradition of Real Racing real driver nothing like it is now basically ever since the greatest NASCAR sponsor left NASCAR in 2003 and I am talking about the greatest Winston Cup Series ever since they left it seems like Nascar has gone down and it is not as exciting as it used to be back in the 90s and 2000 I really enjoyed your video you keep it up have a good one and God bless

I never had some nascar diescast rill last year but I remember as an european fan making floor races with my f1 cars and playing with my Fernando Alonso'12 car and having some fun, sadly this went to worse

hey i just came across your video and i defintely agree with you a kid born in the 2000 era but didnt collect nascar since 2020 i definetly seen a change from the cars in the 2000 diecast and the only reason this company kinda does the same thing every year is because no other company is going against the other company like spin master winners circle etc which arent around anymore this is why you see the same things everyear because no other diecast industry is making diecast except for lionel racing and if other diecast industry's wants to take part in this i defintely would see a change in lionel racing performance and they would make diecast better in total or not who really knows

I live in Europe and Nascar Diecasts dont exist here and i have to buy them on ebay and they cost an arm and a leg to buy and sometimes they dont even ship it here and its so tough getting diecasts for example i need Tyler Reddicks 3CHI from 2022 and they dont even ship it to me and i have looked everywhere and i found one that shipped it to me but it costed £50.00 like thats awful pricing

I'm glad you did collect NASCAR diecast car from Racing Champion from big to small. By the way I still kept NASCAR diecast car whenever it's open or closed for protection. I have mine own collection for favorite NASCAR driver or some of random drivers too. Thankfully I only have NASCAR Winston Cup Series, Nextel Cup Series & Busch Grand National Series diecast car. I never ever had a chance to get NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series diecast at all. It is mine ultimate goal to have top 3 series collect diecast.

My complaint with the company making the 1:24 scale now is they so cheaply made unless you shell out big money for an Elite. A car from 2000 looks almost real with detail upon detail. You think 20 years later, the detail would be unreal, and it is. Just not in a good way. Instead of jumping forward in detail, they look like a Racing Champion from the 90s. I bought some Team Caliber diecast a couple weeks ago for $15 for 2 of them. A 1999 and a 2000. They look like they could start up. 1 even has different right side windows to put in it. It makes me sad that they just don't care anymore.

By 1994 they were making some really decent quality and by 1996 they ditched the black windows in favor of clear ones.

that and diecast now a days are so expensive, at $10+ a car, if your lucky to have a store that stocks them, i have someone in my area that is getting one made by lionel and he's only getting 700 made and for him to break even he has to sell them at a 125 a car, if you wonder how much that translates to, it cost him $87,500 for get them made, yea its something special he's celebrating being sponsored for 50 years with quaker state in '23

You're living and witnessing NASCAR A.D.(After Dale) nowadays. Dale Earnhardt Sr. was the one dab of glue that held the entire NASCAR merchandising industry together, and nothing's been the same since he's been gone. It was his merchandising company that t manufactured most of those diecasts, whether you know it or not. Each and every driver benefited from the NASCAR merchandising industry Dale's Company were making. Drivers would invest money in his company and rake in huge profits. This is the part of NASCAR that was not well known or discussed at the time. The Company that made most of these products was Action/Sports Image, and they made everything from the Racing Champions cars, to the larger 1/24 scale cars. I still have a huge collection of them. Every now and then I will pick up a professionally-made Custom car, that the Diecast companies never created a car for.
The only reason I even watch NASCAR nowadays is because I win money in my NASCAR fantasy league, every year. If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't even tune in. I don't even have a favorite driver anymore.
Action did NOT make Racing Champions cars. The 2 companies were competitors. Sure Dale Earnhardt Sr. was one of the most popular drivers in the 90's, but there were many fans who hated him too. Bill Elliott used to always win the Most Popular NASCAR Driver award for some reason. Fred Wagenhals of Action used to get many drivers to sign exclusive contracts with his company (using money obtained from sales of stock shares), which meant that Racing Champions could no longer produce diecast of that driver. That was a bad thing IMO because Action products were not sold at mass retail, so cars were more difficult to find and the cost was higher. Later on, Action worked out a deal with Hasbro to get Freddie's exclusive drivers into mass retail under the Winner's Circle brand.
I will NEVER buy an Elite after 2021. Overpriced with no detail.
NASCAR itself is in decline, so therefore less demand for a healthy diecast market...and those days are NEVER coming back!
