- A simple video of me going through my collection of atlases and geography books. A lot of people have asked me about what types of books I have and which atlases I use so I wanted to share with you my geography library. I feel like a kid going through my toy chest!

I know right
Atlases got me interested in geography. Geography got me interested in history, anthropology, geology and a lot of other earth sciences and humanities. Even with the internet I enjoy opening an atlas and looking at the world.

And that folks is the magical feeling that experiencing travel can give you too... We just see a bunch of books, but he remembers the details of being there! Get in the car and go see stuff!

Wow! That's so awesome you have all those geography books & atlases! When I was a kid I always loved looking at atlases & maps so much that my dad would buy me a map from any place his job sent him & I was always excited getting a new one. Still to this day, I have a duffle bag full of different maps & atlases.
That sounds pretty cool. I used to have a ton of old folding maps of cities but lost them in a fire.

When our kids were both in college we downsized. As a result, I donated about 150 large maps that I had laminated. They loved them but that thought I was a lunatic. I still keep 15. I still have two paper boxes that have the really nice maps, and travel books. They weigh 30 pounds each. Keeping them because they don't expire.

I have somewhere north of 350 maps and charts. The largest part of the collection consists of the Nat Geo maps that were included in copies of the magazine. Some date back to WWII and the most recent are probably from the '70s. There are also a bunch of state and city maps and a few real antiques including a 1956 NC map that is only 6 years younger than me. Interestingly, it looks very much like current NC maps but is very noticeably missing the interstate system.
I've often thought about framing the NC map between two sheets of glass so both sides can be viewed, but simply don't have any wall space to hang it.
Most of my maps live in a wooden box that I built and which serves as our coffee table. It has an elaborate 14 inch diameter, 32 point compass rose wood burned into the top with eight point roses on the ends, with the word "MAPS" on the long sides.
We are probably going to be downsizing and moving to the beach in a couple of years so she wants me to get rid of the maps but retain the box to use as the coffee table. It looks pretty good, even if I do say so myself.
I love watching you because I never knew there were people like me how was such a nerd for geography also those atlases you buy each year are great I really enjoy just reading them. Thank you very much for your videos.

Glad I’m not the only one who studies maps of locations as I read or watch videos!
When I watch travel or sailing videos I ALWAYS have Google Maps open in a tab. I also have a 16 inch globe right beside my desk that I find myself referring to at least weekly, usually more, because you can't really get the relationships of places on the earth with flat maps.
It is nice to know there are still so many of us.

I stopped buying Rand McNally Atlases maybe 15 years ago, because everything was available on the evil computer. I really enjoyed looking at them and thought what the hay and pre-ordered the latest RM Atlas while watching your video.

Yep, when I was 6 years old I got my dad's world atlas out of his book shelf (as huge as the one you showed) and was gone in my mind for hours. Never met anybody else who had this feeling about maps, so wonderful to see your passion! Keep it going Kyle!
I ❤️ my Delorme Gazeteers! When I was a kid, my family had the NG Atlas of the World and I used to lay it on the floor and read it for hours!
I think it would be interesting if you could make a video about different applications of Geography in the job world. For example, you could talk about remote sensing, what it is, and what it’s used for. Geospatial intelligence is another interesting application of Geography knowledge. Love the videos! Keep it up!
I actually have a video from a few months ago about careers in geography. I go over a lot of various applications within geography.

I love maps and I liked seeing all your books. Makes me not so embarrassed by my ever growing collection of travel books. Never heard of Bradt Guides - so now I have more I can buy - thanks Kyle ;-)
In the late 80s/early 90s, in the SoCal area of California, there was a book of maps made for the area and used by residents. Really detailed pages of the area. For example, if 3 people from different areas wanted to meet, someone would say "Let's meet at page 65, Grid 4-C" and it would get you close enough to meet. Do you recall those? I ran with the Hash House Harriers and that is how we would meet up to start our runs every Saturday.
*edited* After posting the above, the name finally came to me. They were called Thomas (Brothers) Guides. If you are the least bit interested in how the L.A. / Orange Co. area of California changed over the years, they make for interesting reading. New ones were published every year.
I have the one for Monterey Bay area. Great maps.
Rand McNally made maps like those until the mid-2000s. I was fortunate to pick up one of the last ones of the Chicago area from 2005. Now used ones go on eBay for HUNDREDS of dollars.
So neatly organized, I am jealous. I also love to see other people who love books as much as I do!

I have a collection of Rand McNally atlases for every year back to 97 except 98. I usually get one atlas to use and one to put in my collection. It is pretty interesting to see the freeways that weren’t there back then

I have a similar bookshelf and I can never throw out a map. Looking forward to your future video covering Acadia NP where you’ll pick up another pamphlet to add to your collection. New Brunswick has a nice NP as well on the Bay of Fundy if u want to go up the Maine coast even farther. But then you’d be tempted to go even further up to Nova Scotia, Cape Breton and Halifax. But then maybe you’d be able to get Sarah Maclachlan in a video.

I loved the World Reference Atlas! I own at least two additions (pre- and post- cold war)! In high school and college, I was such a geography nerd that I read through them, tackling one or two countries a day for several months!
I loved looking at maps as a kid. My aunt had a subscription National Geographic and after she finished them, she gave them to me. About every two months the magazine included fold out maps, which I collected in a box. As former USAF F-16 pilot I worked with maps professionally many years. I also got many of topos, especially the kind for driving my Jeep Wrangler in New Mexico and Arizona for a total of 15 years. Very interesting tour--I'm jealous of your library!

What fun. I'm a Photoshoper and am a total nerd about all my stuff. BTW, when dating my hub of 40 years, he introduced me to Steely Dan. Best studio band of all time. Pretzel Logic with headphones is sheer perfection. A touch of the divine.

Love this show. I have a BA in Geography from UT Austin. Love paper maps and those Atlases.
You should add the Maine Delorme Atlas and Gazetteer to your collection. Delorme is based in Maine, and the Maine version is the original state atlas of the series. Also at a much higher scale than most (if not all) of the other states! This atlas has a long history of hanging out in Mainer's trucks to navigate backwoods logging roads. Just remember, as you probably already know, many of Stephen King's Maine locations are fictitious. Awesome collection though! I too collect NPS brochures. Great videos, keep it up!
I love this video!!! I've gotten rid of most of my geography textbooks, unfortunately. I still have my Atlas of landforms which I'll bet you would absolutely love. We move so much we don't keep all our old road atlases that I've been getting them for about 30 years. I do still have a couple of textbooks on physical geography and the environment, but mine are so darn old (early 80's). When we travel we always have a road atlas with us as well because cell phone coverage is not reliable. Thank you for reminding me about those Gazetteers - I'm going to have to get a whole bunch of those!

There need to be more of us! I have no idea what got me into atlases but I was just drawn to them early on.
After moving to Michigan from Texas almost three years ago, I finally had the opportunity to take my family to Sleeping Bear Dunes a couple weeks ago, and when you flipped through your NP map collection, I caught an oh-so-brief glimpse of your Sleeping Bear Dunes map! Such a beautiful place...
Just before you pulled out that old Nat Geo hard cover atlas I was having flashbacks-from as young as I can remember, I was barely even bigger than that book, but I would pull it off the shelf and lie in front of it on the floor and study it for hours. I knew nearly every country’s map before I could do subtraction. And I remember being maybe 4-yrs-old (it was before I was in kindergarten), looking at a map and I asked my mom to show me where we lived; then I asked her to show me where my best friend lived (she lived four houses away), where my aunt/uncle/cousins lived in California, and I was so fascinated by it all and by how much information there could be in one image. And each time I looked at a map it seemed I discovered more information. So I kept looking, and looking more, and the information never ended so I never quit looking...
I've had many Wisconsin Gazeteers over the years. They always get beat up. Ironically, I could get lost in it for hours, lol....
Thank you so much for this video. It helped us to determine that The International Atlas by Rand McNally was the very best gift we to give to a young family member, even though it's the 1991 edition and doesn't have all of the current countries and their capitals. It's a fantastic book for geography lovers. Thanks for your story about when you were young and looking at it. Your enthusiasm was encouraging.

I could spend hours just paging through them. Also, a very good series of historical Atlases came out several years ago. They were always heavily discounted at bookstores, so bonus for me!
One thing about the US Roadmap Atlases is that they really need to make them very durable. Thin paper is not going to cut it. We used to live in Eastern Pennsylvania, and those pages were tattered to pieces.
Yeah I end up getting the new ones after a couple of years of use at home and on trips

This is some wholesome content. I am not really deep into geography, but I travel a lot and try to collect informational stuff about the places I visit.
Love seeing folks who are passoniate for something. Kyle your videos are great.
Love this video! This brings back a lot of fun memories. The atlas that got me into geography at a young age was National Geographic's "Our World" picture atlas (1990). Nice, colorful maps with a decent level of detail on each group of countries along with a concise inset for each country with basic facts: flag, capital, population, largest city, etc. There was also a picture or two from each country depicting culture, terrain, flora/fauna etc. It was my first real window to the world and I pored through it endlessly; it was simplified enough that as a grade schooler it didn't feel like an overwhelming amount of info. There was a second version of it printed in 1994 and I remember comparing the USSR/Yugoslavia in the old version with the post-Soviet additions in the second one to keep up to date.
Also loved going over road maps. I would go to AAA as a kid and get free local maps of every city they had in the Bay Area along with state maps and Tourbooks (which had great information on each state) to the point where I'm sure they got tired of seeing me, lol.
Lol I did the same thing with AAA. I was pretty young so I think they thought it was "cute" that a kid would want all those maps and didn't seem upset even though they were technically for people going to those places
I have a large collection of geography books too, but in French. Atlas, guides, maps ... Rather concentrated on France and Europe, but also Turkey, Egypt, Quebec or Morocco. Thanks a lot for your videos ! 🤩

I enjoyed this. I'm obsessive about my geography texts, atlases, maps, gazetteers, and cartography textbooks before the advent of desktop GIS. And we share the same alma mater: I'm California State University, Northridge, BA in Geogaphy in 1979. I'm glad to follow you!! Chuck.
My first book I bought at 5 yr old in 1988 at a school book fair was a 1964 atlas that I still have to this day. I used to trace river systems, draw state boundaries, etc... I build geospatial software today so I can say that book pointed me in the right direction.

CSUN! Me too! 1979. I’m from Woodland Hills. By the way, I just finished reading “How the States Got Their Shapes.” Highly recommended.
I'm not sure about now, but in the 90s and early 2000s CSUN actually had one of the best geography departments in the US. That's what got me to move there from the Central Valley

Hi fellow traveler and CSUN grad. Love, love your channel, your presentations, your excitement! Such a refreshing and informative series of videos. It is so nice to leave the negativity and repetition in general media, to watch one of your fact-filled uploads.
We love geography and world travels; we’ve been to 112 countries so far, plus 40 states + Guam + Puerto Rico. Of course, we started travels long ago. In fact, we used to give travel to our children, rather than toys, starting age 5 to 15. Do you keep count? Love seeing new places. This Covid lockdown meant, we could not go anywhere for 14 months (unusual for us). I too keep travel books, maps, trivia books and the national parks brochures (LOL, crazy, i’m not alone). Do you teach geography? Anyway, great job, keep up great work.

Man, the National Park brochures. I have a ton of those myself. They're fun to collect. I don't know if you do the Passport to Your National Parks stamps, but if you don't, you most certainly should. You would love it. It is just such a rush tracking down all of the different National Sites and getting your book stamped for each one.
I love the lonely planet collection you have. It's the best travel book IMO.
Since you mentioned having atlases that go back for a while, I'd be interested in a video highlighting any interesting changes/differences over that time. Great vid as always!

I used to have all of the AAA Travel Tour guides for the states and provinces. I think they had one for Mexico, as well. They were pretty cool. Maps are definitely better the old school way. Kudos!
