A Honeymoon for Three: The Death of Christina Kettlewell, 1947

- It was quite unremarkable that Jack Kettlewell and his bride Christina should go on honeymoon to Dinnertime Rapids, 100 miles north of Toronto, in Canada. They were a young, attractive couple, who had eloped - but it was considered a curious thing indeed that Jack's close friend Ronnie Barrie should go on the honeymoon with them... Rumours already abounded about the relationship existing between the two men, who spent all their time together, even sharing a bed in their lodgings. All this was to be placed in sharp focus, when the bride died from drowning during the honeymoon - and their cottage was burned to the ground. What had happened? Was it murder? Or suicide? The evidence was finely drawn between both these possibilities, and when the dust had settled, there was a suspicion by the authorities, that someone had got away with murder...
A number of people have asked if they can help support my channel - I don't have any adverts on my channel (and don't intend to) but if anyone wishes to help defray the expenses of making these videos in some small way, they can buy me a cup of coffee! www.buymeacoffee.com/MarkJohnMaguire
Let me know if you come to Kona, Big Island! I will gladly buy you a cup of Kona Coffee!

Felt like I owed you for 20+ hours of content.. thanks for your work on these, it really shows in the quality of the videos.
I can't believe that your channel is a self created youtube channel. I mean no disrespect to you or youtube creators. I'm just so impressed with all your videos and it never ceases to amaze me that you have not been given your own show on the mainstream media. I guess so many people in the entertainment industry that are supposed to know talent don't know talent. You are a gem and I wish that I was rich. I would make sure that you and some other creators who are also super talented were rewarded with more than a thumbs up! Thank you for sharing your gift with us!
I couldn't agree more! Top quality all the way around.

I totally agree - Mark should have his own series on TV.
@@david6532 I agree but he is so talented and I am really glad that he shares his talent with us.
Thank you for your very generous comment - I simply do the best I can, and am always conscious of the flaws in my work!
This entire circumstance screamed of a gay couple. No way to know if they could have colluded to get insurance payout. It is very possible that a young lady could fall for a gay man only to find out on the honeymoon that something was seriously wrong. Unconscious enough to be drowned without much struggle certainly possible. No wonder Christina's family instinctively disliked both men. Just terrible.
Being strictly religious i should think the parents must also have been mortified by the details of her true personality that emerged during the investigation
Ronnie doesn’t look good .
Hopefully they didn’t like both men because of their patina of dishonesty not because of their sexual preference which may or may not have been
I mean, like 5 minutes in, I was like 👀
@@kerryberman609 In 1947? No way.
A story to be taken note of, always pay attention to feelings of unease about people, so often is that feeling correct.
The literary beauty of this narrative is light-years above anything else I can remember hearing on an internet source. Hardly anyone speaks such impeccable English anymore. Thank you.
The literary beauty you admire is called articulation. The narrator, Mark John Maguire, is a highly educated author, poet and artist.
Thank you very much indeed, Michael!
No background music!!! How completely ahead of everyone! . At last ! Maybe others will learn from you. Thank you so much.👍👍👍
AMEN. A talented orator doesn't need music to manipulate how people should feel about the words. I actually don't mind background music if it's really subdued (as opposed to busy or dramatic) and at much lower volume than the speaker. For a long time I used a bluetooth speaker that went in and out of 'standby' mode, with a fairly loud 'POP' any time there was total silence, so any voice-only video caused this every time the person paused for even a second, thus I had to open a second tab for RUclips, just to play 'white noise' simultaneously, to keep the speaker engaged. But since then I've upgraded and can enjoy music-free speech all by itself, ha.
Another fine video! I found this one especially hard to stomach because of the many shots of Ronnie with that smarmy grin on his face. It makes you want to reach through time and punch the creep. Poor girl, I feel so sorry for her in the clutches of this pair.
Lavender marriage was the term used for those days
These older stories are so much more interesting. Beautifully told as always.
Three years after Christina’s death Jack remarried. Jack never mentioned his first marriage or Christina’s death to his new wife. They had a family together before separating in 1969, and the couple never officially divorced.
Jack’s son Richard married a woman named Sharon who was an avid archivist and loved researching family history. You can guess what happened next. In 1992 she stumbled upon microfilm articles that covered Christina’s unexplained death. Sharon was stunned, but her and Richard never mentioned the discovery to Jack. He was in poor health, and he died in 1998 never knowing his secret was out.
This is why women like to dig about your past !
Thanks for that !
Interesting, thanks!
Thank you for sharing this.
" He had somewhat overextended his finances " - what an excellent example of the English understatement.
So happy to get this notification of a new They Got Away With Murder case. Poor Chris, she was so naive & stood no chance against these 2 crooks. Thank you Mark for another fascinating account.

A dull and rainy day in the Highlands just got a whole lot brighter! Thank you Mark, always an absolute delight to hear from you!
Glad you enjoyed it - thank you!
It is always a welcome sight to see you have posted 😊 so thank you. A few little blips in playback did not detract. All good.
Poor Christina. She was tricked and trapped. Those rotters murdered her, you're right they *did* get away with it! And while Ronnie I feel did the heavy lifting, planning, plotting etc. Jack certainly did his part in this young, innocent girl's abuse, misuse and callously discarded. I am very glad she was buried under her maiden name. That is some justice. 🌹
Thank you!
You have one of the most captivating narration styles.
And the voice to match......so professional
Don't know about Canada but before 1967 homosexuality was illegal in uk so I suspect many men married as a "cover".
I think it’s touching and noteworthy that she was buried with her maiden name and NOT as her tragically briefly married name.
She must have been off her head to get involved with these two. Her parents were against it, her sister too, people distrusted Ronnie, she herself had serious misgivings and yet she went ahead … Crime certainly paid this time. Poor grieving family!
I have no doubt the crime was committed exactly as you theorised. It's so frustrating there was no justice, such a cruel, insidious crime. It's a breath of fresh air listening to you talk. So many You Tubers struggle stringing a sentence together and pronounce even simple words incorrectly. It's wonderful listening to someone so articulate x
Thank you, Heather!
Bravissimo!!! You are an amazing presenter and narrator Mark! The stories you present to us are not run of the mill stories presented over and over again on various channels. They are obscure and I crave those. This was a fascinating story. Thank you for all of your efforts! Pure genius!
I truly wish Christina had gotten out of that situation and lived. How absolutely tragic that she succumbed to such a dark and twisted plan. She was so young.
Thank you very much, Kelly - you are most welcome!
Feel so sad for poor Christine, she knew something was very wrong, yet who would have thought the plans were that wicked?

Poor young woman. I can’t help feeling, if it happened to my daughter, I’d make it my life’s job to see those worthless fiends suffer for it. But, vengeance is the Lord’s, they say.
Your you tube true life murder stories, told in your beautiful eloquent voice have brought me so much pleasure. Thank you
Thank you very much, Taslim!
Ronnie and Jack were certainly accomplished in their criminal partnership when it came to this terrible murder and insurance fraud. To me, it seems obvious that these two men had maintained an intimate relationship since they were very young. Clearly, Ronnie was the “mastermind”, and hats off to him, in that those incredible letters penned by Christine to him proved to be an insurmountable barrier to investigators. Surely, there exist some very interesting reports locked away in Canadian police records. Police investigators must have been so frustrated! Poor Christine must have been, in some way, a very pliable personality. Her sisters must have known their sister had been a victim of these two men, and I would be interested in what they had to say to the police about her character. Perhaps one day those archives will be opened to the public, and more answers will be found. It is particularly sad that she was unable to reach her former fiancé, who may have been able to extract her from the horrible situation she was in. This case is certainly, as we say in America, “one for the books!”
Thank you so much Mark for all the hard work you put in to bring us these cases. Yours has to be the best channel on RUclips and I re-watch your videos over and over.

That poor girl, I wonder why someone as bright and smart as she was would have accepted such an unsatisfactory relationship when she deserved so much more. Both men used her to get the insurance payment.

My very favourite part is where you take the time to find out what became of the murderers afterwards. Sometimes nothing, sometimes karma. I can’t believe that the case ended with an undetermined result ! I am certain if you had presented this case in a court Mark, the conclusion would have been a definite result of these two men being clearly responsible for the death of this tragic girl! How awful for Jack’s two children to learn of this horror and the role their father played in it. I wonder if the breakdown of this second marriage was as a result of discovering about Christina? Magnificent work as usual Mark!

You are welcome - thank you, Merrie!
They maliciously and in a calculated way took advantage of a young woman.
It should have been investigated further.
My guess is neither man had much of a conscience.
It was definitely pre meditated, and as for the letters, i think they may have told her they were for a story🤔
or they just wanted to take advantage of her love for Jake to achieve their goals then went 'well we can't have her reveal the truth of our relationship' and just got rid of her. I feel so bad for her, taken advantage of by someone you are in love with is such pain.
Apply inverse psychology, they wanted to force her into sex work
This one has everything- secrets, lies, fraud, scheming, druggings, loveless marriage, mysterious unsolved aspects, evil villains, innocent victim, & of course, murder. Nice work, as always, Mark. #theygotawaywithmurder
Thank you, Candice!
I so appreciate the time and energy you put into your videos…you’re a master storyteller with a superb voice for it.
Thank you very much!
Absolutely incredible as always. Your talent is far beyond that of any the people currently writing things like this for movies/tv/Netflix, so why you're not world famous and feted as a genius, I have no idea.
Really, I think it’s more than obvious those two were rampant homosexuals who dreamed up the murder of the woman they hated for getting in the way of their relationship and getting a tidy profit from the whole sordid deal.
Another masterful narration. Poor girl no doubt besotted by the very handsome Jack, both played by Ronnie.
Interesting that there’s no signs of dirt, cuts on her feet from walking from the cottage to the lake? It’s reads of her being drugged exactly like before, waking up two whole days later, naked and not knowing what happened. Two days unconscious. They drugged her and carried her to the water’s edge placing her to where she would drown. Since there’s no obvious signs of struggle, clean feet, the burning of the cabin to the ground, just happened to save the “suicide letters “, renewing the insurance policy just prior to them marrying. All too much of a coincidence. This was premeditated murder to collect on a insurance policy. I don’t understand how they walked away from this with all the evidence pointing to their guilt. Maybe back then that was the case where the black glove didn’t fit defense, like the O.J Simpson defense? Sad.
"The best-layed plans of mice and men, often go astray" .....fabulous and spot-on quote.
Love the voice and narration style of the Narrator....so soothing to listen to. I could listen to him talk about cement drying and be facinated....🙂
The whole case screams of a gay couple committing conspiracy ,fraud & murder. No hate intended . RIP Christina !
In the 1990s I represented a gentleman with dementia and his two daughters, accused of claiming benefit they weren't entitled to. The daughters had moved in to care for their father when he was in his 80s and could no longer cope on his own. Unaware that they could apply to be his appointees, they were afraid they would lose their home when he became unable to complete his housing benefit renewal forms, so they decided to forge his handwriting and signature and complete them for him, simply copying what he had written in previous forms. Unfortunately they were unaware of one savings account their father had - its not clear whether their father had remembered it when he claimed benefit as he never mentioned it on his previous claims. The account was never accessed in over 20 years. It wasn't there to copy over, is the main point.
The council discovered the bank account and said that he had been overpaid benefit. The appeal hinged on whether he was the one who had completed all of forms or just the earlier ones.
The council employed a graphologist to examine all of the forms and the result of his report was that the case against my clients was dropped.
From my point of view, however, the most interesting thing was that, using a known sample of father's handwriting, the expert stated that two of the forms which the daughters told me they had completed had been completed by father.
That has permanently coloured my view of handwriting experts.
That is very interesting - thank you. I felt I could go no further on the handwriting aspect here, but I agree that handwriting is vulnerable to all sorts of error and misinterpretation...
Handwriting is difficult as a person ages. There can be issues with medication, arthritis or injuries as well as just lack of practice.
My own writing is very different than it was a decade ago as I learned recently in doing a voter registration card comparison.
Fantastic! I read about this one some years ago, but without all the extra details that you've included - superb research, well done. I do wonder if Christina's letters were forged by Barrie - even though the handwriting expert declared them to be genuine, how good was the handwriting analysis at that point (or indeed, today) - it's a soft science. However, as you point out, finding some sneaky way of getting Christina to write them, persuading her through manipulation, lies and subterfuge, would be right up Barrie's street - he was a con man through and through and seemed to enjoy inventing complicated ruses. The story about the blackmail etc was unnecessary and irrelevant, but that didn't stop him from fabricating it and tossing it into the pot - a pathological liar. Thanks very much for this upload and all your hard work, it's a fascinating tale. :)
I came across this channel recently and thought I'd give it a listen- I'm glad I did! Excellent content- I am now subscribed. Thank you!

My goodness who would believe any of this story. Ronnie and Jack were lovers and Christina was a convenient stooge and then a way to make cash. Nothing this Ronnie said makes sense. Why would Christina be blackmailed for an assault when she was the one assaulted? Why did no one else know she was suicidal? What proof is there that Ronnie gave her this money? It's easy to forge letters and signatures and so called hand writing analysis was weak at that time. Perhaps the story was told to her and was asked to write it out. Nothing about this story makes much sense and it's easy to put words into the mouth of a dead girl. This seems a cold blooded murder planned by both Jack and Ronnie. They indeed got away with murder. I hope Christina is resting in peace, and may Ronnie, if there is such a place be burning in hell.

Thank you kindly, Eli!
Aww poor Christina, thanks Mark for telling this tragic story, I knew as soon as you said the three of them were always together there was something amiss, I hope they got their justice from God when they passed!
The thing that bothers me most about this case is the suicide letters because, as Christina was a girl from a strict Catholic family, suicide would have been unthinkable. Suicide is considered the only unforgiveable sin because it is the ultimate turning of one's back on God and there is no way round from it, and she would certainly have been taught this. She cannot have written those letters of her own volition. She might, however, have been induced to write them as an aid to the men writing that magazine article--if there were a story that she could "help" with, she probably might have done so and maybe there was a potential financial inducement for her contribution. There is so much more to this story that is hidden in the shadows of the past and enmeshed in the lies of a greedy man, and we now can only speculate.
I feel so badly for Christina. If she had been more worldly, she might have caught on to what was happening. It seems that, the reason why people say the "good old days" was so nice and safe is because law enforcement ignored a lot of serious crimes.
Yes, the people who want to turn back the clock and live in the ‘The good old days’ are willfully blind to the real history of any given era. Poverty, no medical care, non existent legal rights, way to many wars and let’s not forget the social acceptance of violence by neighbours for any infractions that stemmed from popular beliefs.
They also did not have the means to solve crime. Eg it was very hard to prove murder until DNA in the early nineties.
Spellbinding story…. And as always, beautifully written and read….thanks for sharing!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙏🇬🇧🇿🇦
Thank you mark for another great case, and all the hard work you put in to bring theses cases to us.

Awesome! I've heard this story before, but no one weaves a tale better than you.
You have a special and unique quality storytelling. Dealing with such tragedies is never easily told by a narrator but you do it considerately and with sensitivity.
There was clearly a scam going on here for an insurance fraud and the plot you outline has a definite ring of truth about it. The kids of Jack discovering all this about their father in later years must have been jarring for sure!!
Many thanks and I look forward to the next one, I’ve listened to every single story you’ve produced and narrated on this channel and could happily listen to so many again and again. My favourite is difficult to say but probably the Seal Chart case is particularly intriguing.
These are like unexpected Christmas presents, Mark. Thank you. 🙏🏻
Glad you like them - thank you, Jonathan!
An excellent recounting of this story with a few details that I've not heard before... the photos showing the cabin's proximity to the water are really helpful in understanding such an odd crime scene. 👌 I've never bought the story that Christina was suicidal & it's obvious the letters were dictated (if not edited or entirely written) by Ronnie... even today, handwriting analysis is more art than science and the content itself (the language used & the writing style) is far more instructive.
I get the impression that Ronnie & Jack tried to change their murder/suicide plan (which they'd created those letters for) at the last minute, after finding out the double indemnity insurance payout was contingent on an accident. The crime scene is confusing because none of the evidence matches a single theory... it's like the men chopped & changed between plans in their panic, and by the time help arrived they had no way to sell it as an 'accident' any more. Poor Christina, RIP 🤍
Thank you, so much for re-posting! Great! Best thing on You Tube.

Bravo Maestro! wonderful story-telling. Your drawing of Chris after finding herself naked and vulnerable was charming in the way you kept her modesty whilst indicating her confusion. Murder? I go with Occam's razor - the simplest reason is usually the correct one. She was murdered having been manipulated by both men. Ronnie - a malignant narcissist in charge of his lover Jack [an introvert] and Chris a trusting victim. So sad.

Marvelous, fascinating documentary. Jack and Ronnie were ahead of their time, it's amazing they were able to stay together for the next two years after being outed in the press and all the scrutiny. Jack ultimately followed the inevitable path, not for his own happiness. I do wonder about the wife's insurance policy and Ronnie's post-1956 fate.

Another compelling analysis, many thanks Mark.
By coincidence, a year later (1948) Hitchcock - quite brilliantly - directed the film 'Rope' which was based on a 1929 play, which in turn is thought to have been based on the actual murder of a teenage boy in 1924. I was comparing the brazenness of Barrie and the more subdued (possibly remorseful) personality of Jack Kettlewell with the roles played by John Dall and Farley Granger in that film. The film intimates that there is a very 'close' relationship in the male characters and the original play certainly makes clear that the characters are more than 'good friends'. 'Rope' is a fascinating character study for anyone who hasn't seen it.
No doubt in my mind that Barrie and Kettlewell conspired together to commit murder here and interesting that there is no apparent record of Kettlewell claiming on the life policy. A terrible, tragic end for a beautiful young girl.
Good point! I remember Rope but hadn’t connected the dates, and the relationships surely seem similar!
Love that movie
Yes, Rope is based on the Leopold & Loeb case though. About them wanting to commit „the perfect crime.“
Many thanks Johnny - yes, I recall Rope and the 1924 case. It is possible that these could have influenced Ronnie. I was also reminded of the movie Double Indemnity here.
@@TheyGotAwayWithMurder Yes Mark, Double Indemnity is one of my favourite film noirs of all time, an absolute classic - and I can see where you are coming from on the life insurance side.
It took me a minute to realize where I’d heard these events described before, I didn’t think I’d ever hear an hour-long recounting of something I first heard on Buzzfeed Unsolved. This is great!
Ronnie had two motives. The first being jealousy. He then realized he could get rid of his rival and make a great deal of money at the same time.
The most inane claim was that Chris was being blackmailed by the men that had allegedly sexually attacked her. I find it rather odd that an attacker would blackmail a victim.
You'd be surprised. People who do sextortion today still blackmail the victims of their own sexual crimes.
Perhaps the two men had Chris write the suicide letters under the pretext they were for their “book”.
These guys were renting a room where they slept the same bed? All three of them went on the honeymoon? Clearly these two were gay. Homosexuality was illegal in Canada until 1969. Christina was Jack's beard, distracting public attention away from his affair with Ronnie. Ronnie needed money, Ronnie wanted Jack. Christina was insured. Do away with Christina and presto - problem seemingly soved.
Exactly what I was thinking.
Jack was probably bi

Very interesting ! And very strange. I agree, Christina was supposed to die in the fire but somehow managed to get out. Being drugged, with her face even in shallow water, she would drown. "Crooks".....exactly. Thank you for this, well done.
Such a sad tale, beautifully presented and illustrated as usual.
I;m so glad you liked it, Tina!
Hi Mark
Well I don't think you've left much meat on the bone for us to chew on; your coverage of this case was exceptionally comprehensive.
All I would proffer is to say that it's likely that this case, set in our day, would probably result in charges being laid against Barrie and Kettlewell, based on the circumstantial evidence. I'm convinced that the Crown prosecution Service or DA equivalent would have no problem in convincing the judiciary to take this to trial. The holes in the defence narrative defies belief. A very intriguing tale and one that I'd not heard about beforehand. Congratulations.
Hi Nick - many thanks. Yes, I agree with you, this case would probably produce a result today. There were many holes in law enforcement back then, it seems to me. Methodologies were still developing, budgets were tighter etc. It is a fascinating case. All the best.
