The Murder of Emma Keyse: John Babbacombe Lee, 1884, by Mark John Maguire

- The case of the murder of Emma Keyse in 1884 is quite unique in British Criminal History. The crime itself is fascinating, but it is what followed that has ensured the enduring fame of the case. John Babbacombe Lee was a man born under a lucky star, but did he really get away with murder?
A number of people have asked if they can help support my channel - I don't have any adverts on my channel (and don't intend to) but if anyone wishes to help defray the expenses of making these videos in some small way, they can buy me a cup of coffee! www.buymeacoffee.com/MarkJohnMaguire
Just love your videos can't get enough of them
I can't be the only one who clicks 'like' before she's even opened the video?! Look forward to the book Mark. No doubt I shall read it in 'your voice'. x
Would be great if he read an audible version as well, though I know that is LOADS of work.
You are not!
YANA, You are not alone. I do it, also.
Thank you very much!
No, you are definitely not alone. I click the “like” button as soon as I open it. Mr Macguire is currently my absolute favorite RUclipsr. I love his voice.
I love your videos. Please keep doing these! I particularly love how you go back to cover crimes that happened long ago and are seldom discussed.
Congrats on your book!!! I adore your pre-1900/unheard of cases. Thank you so much for all you do.
Thanks, Garreth - I am so glad you like them!
I am enthralled with your presentations. Please continue to create these fascinating stories.
Thank you, Linda - I will do!
Thank you Mark ! You're a real star & no one can narrate stories quite like you. Excellent.
Thank you, Micky!
An episode of the early tv series ONE STEP BEYOND deals with a man who couldn't be hanged, who, due to current law at the time, wound up being released. He began to think he couldn't be killed since someone later tried to shoot him, but the gun failed. Supposedly based on a true story.
Thanks for the posting, so well done (as usual)!!
Your podcast are in a class of their own. I always enjoy them thoroughly. My only complain is there's not more of them. I'm aware that there's a lot of research involved. Eagerly waiting for the next one.
Love this as ever. Wait and wait for these to pop up

Just got the notification for this new video! Can’t wait to watch. Thanks Mark!
Thank you, Cay!
Just to show appreciation for the almost perfect grammar, pronunciation and enunciation which put this channel head and shoulders (and more) above other channels dealing with similar subjects
Almost??? Who are you The Queen. 🙄 He is perfect in every way on how he tells his stories. 😉

Oh so glad to listen to this!
Make sure you do the audio book to your book! Magnificent voice. Thanks for the upload!
Thank you! Will do - it will take a little longer for the augio book, but it will be done.
Oh happy days. Thank you. A new video. Just what I needed to take my mind off bad new from doctor this week. Always enjoyable, interesting, insightful and well researched stories. ❤️
Oh I am sorry to hear of this - I hope you will make a good recovery as soon as possible. Take care.
Well researched and well presented. As always.

awes channel yes! a real 💎
I've been spoiled today. So many of my subscriptions uploading on a Friday evening. What a treat. :)
Oh happy day, another presentation from my favorite presenter! I can’t wait to read your book.👍👍👍
Thanks Kathryn - I will post about this soon!
Mr Maguire, I think I speak for many others as well as myself…you are absolutely as fascinating as your stories. Thank you so much for your tireless research and narration.
How kind of you to say so - than you, Cissy!
Hello from Milwaukee, WI 🙋🏻♀️
I currently live 4 blocks (.2mi /.3km) away from 454 E. Holt Ave. My Mom grew up just down the road from 922 S. 10th but on 9th street. And my Grandparents, Great-Grandparents, and various other relatives/ancestors are buried at Forest Home Cemetery.
What a small world. My ears perked up when you said Milwaukee, I almost dropped my phone when you read the address, LOL. 🙀
As always, thank you for another stellar narration of a perfectly written story!! ❤️
Isn’t it a small world though!
That is so cool 😎
Hi neighbor!👋 I too live very close to Holt Ave. I grew up in Bay View. My family is buried at St. Adalbert's. What a small world! I'll be making a trip to Forest Home to visit Lee's grave as soon as this heat lets up!😩🔥 Take care & have a great day. ( Maybe we'll bump into each other at Piggly Wiggly!) 😂🐷

Thank you, Michelle!
Excited for the video but even more excited for the book! Congratulations, Mark!
Mr. Maguire's research and writing are exquisite; the recitation delicious! We are blessed to hear the English language written and spoken in all it's nuance and power. Maquire takes us on a fantastic journey leaving me wanting more at the close.
Ah - thank you, Bill - lovely to hear!
Can’t wait to get your book! Please let us know as soon as it’s available!
I will post about it very soon, Debbie - thank you!
Congratulations Mark!! You’ve got a lot of fans right here! I for one am a huge fan of yours and look forward to your book!!
All the best!!
Thanks so much, Kadine - coming very soon indeed!
You have the most underrated channel on YT. The quality of your work is certainly not reflected by the current subscriber count. Well a last I can say I was here before you hit your first million mark 😊
It's taken a massive leap since the last video. He was at 1.3 thousand for a long time, now over 30 thousand, hopefully it will keep jumping up like this.
@@irishcoffeetruecrime yes hopefully 😊
Thank you very much - I am delighted you have such confidence in me! :)
I never get tired of your beautiful accent and pronunciation of the English language. Plus you have the most exquisite vocabulary. I enjoy picking up on the "unique" words and repeating them after you - trying to mimic you, with my native New York, USA accent. You sound great on my Kia Fortes speakers. I can pull up your channel on the car radio - right where I left off at my desk...and viola, there is that perfect voice with perfect intonation.
@FSS2000 No, it' s more than that. It's like English taught to you by good ( literature& language ) teachers . Us foreign learners can appreciate that greatly. Nowadays I recommend his documentaries to my own pupils..
Thank you very much indeed - you are too kind!
I always look forward to your narratives. You do an excellent job in researching the story, facts, and aftermath.
Many thanks, Nellie.
Just brilliant. As always. Best channel on YT
Thank you very kindly, Sinjin!
Another exceptional telling of a fascinating story. I hope to be able to buy your book soon!
Thank you, Pam - I will post about the book this evening!
This guys narration and accent is quintessential for British crime noir story telling. Exquisitely done!!!
Thank you, Bren! :)
Thank you! Been waiting patiently, love your work
Thank you, Marian!
Another brilliant narration Mark! Thank you so much! I cannot imagine who 'dislikes' these essays. Each to their own I guess. I, for one, love them! More please!
PS...I can't wait for the book release!
Thank you, Stephanie - I will be posting a reading of chapter 1 of the book tonight, plus details of the book. Then I will return (promptly, I hope!) to another episode in the series.

Yet again a great story shared with us. Thank you for your energy putting these stories together. I wish you every success with your book.
Many thanks, Naailah.
Love this channel. I know it requires lot of research, but wish he posted more often
His videos are four times as long as Brief Case, so I can forgive if it takes much longer to upload new ones 👍
Thank you, Mark, for another wonderful episode.
Thank you, Kaitlynn - I'm delighted you enjoyed it!
I didn’t realise that so many of the drawings in your videos are your own!
You’re a very talented man. It was lovely to see you so excited and relaxed at the start of the video, you’re really coming into your own!
Congrats on the book, I will be buying a copy whenever it is available. Once again, great video, well researched, produced, and narrated,
Thank you very much, Madeleine! I must confess I have felt a little awkward in front of the camera, but it is getting easier! I will post something about the book later today - many thanks again for your kind words.
Excellent as always, cheers Mark, appreciate your hard work and the quality of your output.
Thanks, Damien!
I'm absolutely thrilled at the idea of the book, cannot wait to get my hands on a copy! Well done, it looks brilliant!
Thank you very much! I am going to post about it shortly!
That was one of your very best videos. Thank you.
I'm glad you liked it - thank you, Fizza
You are so amazing! On the level of Alistair Cooke doing Masterpiece Theatre! Can’t wait to read your book!!!! Wait a second…you do the drawings and you’re sitting at the piano. Are you telling us you do the music, too!? Nooooo!
Thank you so much - the piano music is certainly mine, but I make no special claim for the little piece I wrote for the series! It seems to work!
I knew it was going to be a good day, when I received the notice of this video! I always look forward to them, and set a time aside to allow me to watch it uninterrupted! So well told and researched! A real professional job. Its a pleasure to watch your channel grow!Thank you again!
Thank you, Sandi - that's a lovely comment!
Fascinating story. Ending was so unexpected. So well told, sir!

Excited! Saving this one for nightfall! Somehow adds to the ambience of the storyline!
Wow! I'm definitely getting your book. I love your work!
You are very kind - thank you: I will post about this very soon!
I'm looking forward to reading your new book, as your videos absolutely fascinate me.
Thank you, Rose - I shall upload a video about the book soon.
Mark...what joy to get the alert that you had posted another masterpiece of crime. To all followers, I checked out Mark’s background this evening...I suggest you do the same...absolutely fascinating. Thanks so much MJM👍🕵️♂️. The only slight quibble I have is the way you sometimes repeat bits of the story.
Backhanded compliment!?
@@onetime7408 One the contrary I love his stories and illustrations but if one can’t make a simple point then it’s a bit sad.
Mr Maguire has been a barman, a labourer, a soldier, aircraft sealer, head of international relations at the welsh office and principal private secretary to the presiding officer at the national assembly for wales. For anyone who's interested
Thank you, Mike!
Now my week end is complete! Thank you!
Again superb. Thank you so much. What I appreciate a great deal is not just the bare bones of the account but the context, with its sociopolitical implications of the times . You are an unbelievably good storyteller. (Or should that be fact teller?!).
Thank you very much!
Saving this to watch later tonight with my feet up and a drink, happy times 😀
Cannot wait for tonight. Snuggled in my blankets listening to this new post. I am truly excited.

Happy to be 4
I now have a date for tonight! Can’t wait.
I'm always sad after watching, when an episode ends, just at the fact that it's over. That says a lot. Looking forward to the next, and to hearing more about your upcoming book.
Thank you - I will post something about the book in a little while.
I'm so glad your back. Your channel is a mental escape for me. I am a nurse and I'd have to say humans are the scariest thing I have ever come across. I hope you are well and look forward to more videos. We'll wishes everyone.
This former nurse, ret psychiatrist concurs.
@@barbarajohnson3876 👋. I'm many years away from retirement, planned retirement, life is unpredictable. Hope you're well. I've always said when I'm tired of being a floor nurse maybe I'll teach. Idk, id have to go back to school though because I have an AA, an AS, and a BS, and it's my understanding you need a masters or bachelor to teach.
At least a Bachelor's. We r retired in panama, since 2008, and loving it. Stay safe
Nurses love murder mysteries....well I do !
Thank you very much - I'm so glad you like it! I agree with you - humans are the scariest things - but they can also be the nicest things. We seem to have the widest spectrum between good and bad imaginable.
This piece is an exemplar of allowing the facts and context of a horrible crime speak for themselves. Your mellow voice and delightful sketches gently draw us through the story and it is lovely that there is never intrusive music to distract the viewer. Thank you MJM. Good luck with your book - consider me first in a long queue of buyers:)
Thank you very much! I will post on the book very soon!

Thank you, Sarah - I will post about the book some time this evening!
Congrats on the upcoming release of your book.
Thanks for another great video/story.
This channel is by far one of my favorites. I love the captivating elegance which these tragic stories are told. It is a combination of dark tragedy and art and that is quite an achievement.
Thank you very much, Melissa!
My favourite story teller. I’ve gone to bed early just to listen and escape the noisy tv. ☺️
Fascinating story! Well researched, written and wonderfully presented, as always. Very interested in seeing your new book and the illustrations, though I'm also hoping you'll be offering an audiobook version of it, as well. Many thanks for this riveting presentation.
Many thanks - yes, I will do an audiobook of it too...but expect it to take several weeks...
Im stuck all day in my kitchen all day and could not believe my luck when this video showed up.
Me too! I was getting ready to wash dishes and thought, I'll see what's on RUclips and listen while I work. 😊 I'm an hour late, but, I wouldn't have this to listen to if I hadn't been.
Well, I was just heading down to my kitchen when I just saw the post of a new episode. In my case I won't be able to view it until I am I am done in the kitchen! 😀
But I have to say I enjoy listening to Mark as a bedtime story. Hope you both enjoy the latest. Cheers
And I’ve decided I can put off heading to the kitchen a little longer in order to watch this
@@mrsharmeyer8520 good thinking!
I wasn't stuck as you say, but I certainly had things that had to be done in the kitchen and I did them while listening before reading these comments and absolutely just smiling. Have you ever spent hours in the kitchen and afterwards although all signs of mess are gone, you can't really remember what you accomplished specifically?
One upside to growing older and having a memory thats less reliable, is that I can listen to Mark's essays a second time and it's almost like the first time all over again.
Congratulations on the publication of your book. Love your channel.
Congratulations! Opening a proof copy for the first time - there is little to equal that rush of pride and excitement! I will be buying your book and, if it is half as erudite and well researched as your videos, I'll be happy. I didn't realise you do the drawings as well. You are what my mother (bless her) would call 'a Renaissance Man'.
Me too, love his illustrations.
WOW! What a story. Almost unbelievable, thank you for this excellent presentation. I love listening to your voice and well written stories.
Wow! Friday night and a new story from my favorite guy. All is right with the world ❤
Agree!
Happy day! And doubly excited to hear about your book.
As always Mark an excellent narrated tale. Must take you some time putting this together with your attention to their personalities, motives and the scenes surrounding the murders - which are so thorough one can imagine being there and overlooking all the events! I love this sort of detail and cannot wait for your next story. Good luck with the book - looks fantastic, well done!
Thank you very much, Celeste - yes, much work, but satisfying!

I first learned about this case years ago when I was in my teens, listening to "Babbacome Lee" by Fairport Convention. I used to wonder who the song was about...
Haven’t watched the main part of the video just yet but had to comment my congratulations on the book!! I’d very much enjoy reading it when available. You’re little grins while sharing your drawings is a great thing to see!
Thank you - I will be posting about the book soon!
First, I want to congratulate you on your new book, Mark! I am looking forward to reading it and I am sure that all your subscribers are impatiently waiting to read your book. I love old murder cases especially ones from the UK .. What a well-researched fascinating story. Besides being a good writer you are a great storyteller that holds your audience to the very end. The story you have chosen is a good one with a good plot, with a dramatic appeal, masterfully narrated by your silky voice that is a treat to listen to. I do like that you always trace what happened to the individuals after their trial. The accompanying sketches are very effective. As far as I remember, you had drawn up to 30 sketches in this story. Thanks for your hard work.
We always take great pleasure to see your enthusiasm for work you do. Every job is a self-portrait of the person who did it. My appreciation for you is much greater than these words.
Hoping that you will remain with us for many years to come!
Thank you so much!
Thank you, Madonna i am so glad you enjoyed it - and I value your comment!
Can't wait for the book. Please narrate an audiobook for those who are like my husband. He's lost his vision and can't see clear enough to read anymore. Which is hard for a big book reader like him
Oh yes, please. I second this. I will be buying the book just to keep also Mark but audio would be fabulous.
Agree. Mark's diction, clarity, and lack of any accent makes him perfect for all sorts of voice work.

How thoughtful of you! I am struggling to reply, somewhat, to be honest - it takes me about 6 hours to get through a tranche of comments. I am happy to keep doing it for as long as it is possible!
Very interesting. I don’t think twenty two years in prison in Victorian times would have been a cake walk. However, the fact that he deserted his wife and children tells you something about his character. He may have cheated the hangman, but not final judgment.
Do you think you might put this on audio CD with you as the narrator? It would be wonderful! Especially for those of us that are unable to read books anymore. Love you videos and am always excited when you publish one. Thanks!
