I had the honor of serving under a Philippine US Naval Academy graduate. The young LT. chose to serve in the USMC. This Lt was outstanding in every way. Just a damn good Marine Officer. We went our separate ways in the Corps but reunited in the very middle of the desert during Desert Storm. I was walking and he was riding a and boom met at a desert intersection. It was indeed good to see him.

On the average, 20 Filipinos graduate from West Point yearly, though only one is sent by the Philippine government and will join AFP thereafter. The rest, sons and daughters of Filipinos living in the U.S., go straight to the US Armed Forces.

Can you blame them if they join the US military instead of the Philippine military? The U S military takes care of their service members whether you are a a ranking officer or not. They have excellent lifetime benefits even after they retire from the service. Unlike in the Philippines if you are just an ordinary soldier they are taken for granted. They even have a hard time securing their pensions.

West Point style of leadership is for Americans which means Filipino WestPointers have to unlearn when they come back to effectively lead Filipino soldiers.
