    Firstly, please let an old cavalry corporal offer his respects to the entire Ogrydcziak family. Mom and Dad, you done good.
    But I do have a question....
    As I understand it, each Congressman and Senator can appoint one qualified applicant to each Academy [West Point, Annapolis, Colorado Springs, and New London (USCG Academy) ]. So did these young men completely blow away every other applicant for their appointment year? As the story says, this is highly unusual.

    • @valentinshatilenko7404
      @valentinshatilenko7404 3 года назад +1

      The mother and father are former Coast Guard, which means the Ogrydcziak brothers were eligible for service-connected nominations, such as the presidential nomination (I believe there are around 400 of these per year). The brothers at the very least pursued, and likely received, these types of nominations. Additionally, congresspeople don’t appointment applicants, instead they rank and nominate a slate of applicants, often up to 10 for each academy. The Academies then have final say about which nominees are offered appointment, but each congressperson is limited to 5 concurrent cadets per academy, meaning that for the most part only one, or sometimes two, of the nominated slate are offered appointment. As such, it’s highly unlikely that all three brothers were accepted on congressional nominations, (assuming they applied from the same district). Also, the Coast Gaurd academy does not require nomination, but the Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) does.

      @@valentinshatilenko7404 Thanks for the input, VS.
      I certainly wasn't trying to imply that the nominations are rigged. Back in the early 80's, two twin brothers from my rural high school were appointed [one to the Point, the other to Annapolis], so I know that this can happen. But I was curious as to how it works.
      Good luck to you in your Army career and, whether you succeed in your ambitions or not, thanks for your time.

    What does the colour on the hat at the end mean, I see one blue and two red barred hats.

    • @eliduttman315
      @eliduttman315 6 лет назад

      The colored band on the service cap indicates branch of service. For instance, teal blue is infantry. From his lapel insignia, 1 of the young men with a red band is definitely Corps of Engineers (sappers). I can't be sure, but that blue seems to be aviation.

      The one with the darker band is in the medical corps.

    Why did his father who is a captain salute him?

    • @bobalobalie
      @bobalobalie 6 лет назад +42

      It's part of the first salute tradition. It doesn't matter the rank. The newly commissioned officer receives his first salute and salutes back. It is however traditional fo the higher ranking officer to say "Welcome to....." if the first salute is rendered by a higher rank.

    • @jerryyan5205
      @jerryyan5205 5 лет назад +3

      first salute can't be higher rank or officers. Only NCOs

    • @bobalobalie
      @bobalobalie 5 лет назад +11

      Jerry Yan Please show me the regulation on this............Because I call complete BS on it. The "first salute" is to any rank the newly Commissioned Officer chooses. When a newly commissioned officer choses to use their first salute to a higher rank. The higher rank will salute first and say, "Welcome to the......." or "Welcome to the Officer Corps." Then the lower rank will salute back to the higher rank. This happens QUITE OFTEN after the commissioning ceremony. Since most military families, especially the ones at West Point, have fathers and mothers who were/are Field Grade or General Officers. I know for a FACT that even President Bush accepted the offer of first salute to a few West Point grads in 2002, 2003, and 2004. The former President saluted first, then the 2LTs saluted back. Considering the President of the USA is the "Commander in Chief" and saluted a 2LT first. This clearly isn't a regulation or even a tradition that it MUST be an NCO who salutes the newly commissioned officer.

      You are required to serve for 5 years in the Army.

    • @bobalobalie
      @bobalobalie 6 лет назад +3

      It's actually a total of 8 years. 5 years of which are required to be Active Duty and another 3 years of which are on Inactive Ready Reserve Status. However, many IRR Soldiers were called back at the beginning of the current conflict. Since 2003 many more were involuntarily extended to 8 years while still on Active Duty. If you are on IRR and called back you are required to serve at least another 3 years to fulfill the total 8 year obligation. It could be the last day of IRR, doesn't matter, three more years active duty.
