    Yes, as others have said, "1/8" is not "thin" material. I have only used flux core a couple of times in my 25 years of welding, so I don't know a real lot about it, but it is good to know that when you do need to use this process, that there are different types of flux core products for different types of jobs.

    I've been a stick welder all my life. I recently purchased a Hobart handler 140. Really enjoying this new toy. Wish i had purchased one years ago. People are sleeping on flux core and the 110 units. So handy, easy, and a great weld. Originally bought for thin medals. I'm not afraid to weld anything up with this. Renewed my passion for fixing and building things here on the farm.

    I got excited for a moment too with the thought of thin and flux core, lol. I thought it was going to be some auto body panel "thin" sheet metal, 1/8" is like the frame thickness which is much easier to weld, even flux core. I've used flux core to patch body panels which is very thin stuff, but had to use a piece of copper behind it as to not burn straight through, it worked, not ideal, just what I had to work with as gas is too expensive for hobby work on my own projects. Still, a good video, I'm just torn on calling 1/8" thin sheet. Then again, I'm not an experienced welder, just a hobbyist / repair my own stuff as it breaks.

    I'm very new to welding but I'm able to weld 2mm angle iron using 0,9mm (=0,035 inch) flux core, with ease. For those who have a cheap welding machine (like me): the key is not to use "synergic" features but instead set the machine by hand. My settings are 330/16V, and I can move pretty slowly, and thoroughly. At first I tried synergic settings, and I was just burning through, instantly :)

    Thin? Ha! That is NOT thin. The reason I own a FCAW machine is for auto body work. About 1/32" to 3/64" usually, 1/16" max. I run .35" t11 hot and fast, and pulse the trigger as needed to cool the puddle and not blow through. Takes practice but its relatively easy once you know how to control the heat.

    Hey there, You're the man I need. RUclips let me down on this.
    Can You show us how to fuse 3-6 mm (1/8'' - 1/4''') round stock with MIG (FCAW), no gas?
    I tried it on DCEN, as is usual for flux-core, with the machine set to half the material strength of the rod. I can not by hand manipulate the amperage, but I can set thickness increase/decrease the puddle heat a bit by means of electrical reactance (Technomig 210 dual synergic 230V). I got solid tacks most of the time, but soon as one of them doesnt stick, any further attempt results in burn-through. I try to fill it up and just melt the rod away... I can't keep the pistol on. Also, I don't know what to look for (like puddle and flux crust I usually see when doing larger welds on square tubing). I just can't reliably do it man. I need input :(

      Weld some test pieces the same thickness and then break them. The welds should not break at all or if they do only after significant permanent bending of the base metal. If it passes that test and you're confident of your consistency then you should be good. I would definitely do this before welding on thick chassis members. Flux core can work very well but an underpowered machine or a poor quality wire can ruin your day.

      The polarity matters a lot. Use electrode positive on flux core by mistake and you get loads of spatter and poor penetration. But a gasless only machine will be set up with electrode negative anyway so you should be OK.

      @@benc8386 Ben C thanks, I recall watching a video here about that, all I remembered was the splattering. Being a more automotive guy, I just assumed the "ground clamp" would be negative. Just trying to continue learning. I have a tig welder too, but I have only used it for stick (so far), stick seems inappropriate for rusted ass floorpanels (rust cleaned up on the topside, but it's super thin and rusted on the backside even after overlaying with sheetmetal).

    • @benc8386
      @benc8386 5 лет назад +1

      @@Synaux Stick is going to be difficult on anything less than 2mm and more or less impossible on less than 1.6mm. TIG is great but tricky when out of position on a car floor especially as you need at least three hands. Flux core can be used on car bodywork OK although short circuit MIG will do a neater job.

      @@benc8386 See! I have no idea what I am talking about and I nailed it! :P
      Tempted to go TIG, but it without experience (I will practice) it seems significantly more finicky. I bought a decent TIG welder for aluminum only....suggestions for "steel" electrodes on super thin shyt? Or general tips (no tungsten)

    • @benc8386
      @benc8386 5 лет назад +1

      @@Synaux 1/16 tungsten is good for thin material but it doesn't make much difference. A 1mm filler rod is recommended or even thinner (you can use MIG wire). For lap joints the main thing is a really tight fit so just hold it down with a screwdriver and fusion tack in a few places to get started. Then the biggest problems are blowing holes (gotta direct and control the heat carefully) and distortion (keep the travel speed decently high, pulse the pedal, and do "back steps"). Practice on offcuts while sitting down comfortably and once you've nailed that worry about trying it on the actual car which will be harder because out of position.

    As a complete beginner that is really well-read and studied, I think you unintentionally mislead folks into thinking you were going to show us how to weld thin metal with Flux Core. There are lots of You Tubes that show many methods of using Flux Core to weld thinner metal.
    I think because (and I don't know it is just what I think) so many folks are getting into/got into welding due to Harbor Freight and others offering extremely low-cost investment welders to allow an average person to purchase and then teach themselves to "Weld", we are looking for that entry-level on how-to-use our newly purchased tool.
    Does this make any sense? Thank you for doing this, it is just a bit over my head but maybe not everyone else.
