  • If you were curious about the Kindle Scribe and notetaking, you have come to the right place! Here I take a tour through the device (updated through August 2023) and talk about what it can and can't do. Then I give my thoughts about Amazon's role in this market going forward.

    I think you are right about the future for Scribe. However, owning several of the e-ink devices, including Remarkable and Nomad, I still enjoy note taking on the Scribe. I find that the internal lighting system on the Scribe is sorely missing on the other devices. I hope Amazon continues to support and improve Scribe. It could be a major money maker if they make it attractive to business, schools and the like.

    When the Scribe was released, I found the reaction it got in the eink writing tablet space ranged between disappointment to indifference. However, when compared to the reaction of the vastly larger market of existing Kindle users, I found it to be one of excitement and marvel - a Kindle e-reader that you can actually write on was something that was new to this market segment that comprised of many people that were not aware that this sort of technology already existed. And this latter market is the one I think that Amazon was aiming for. Existing e-ink tablet users will compare it to other e-ink tablets and in this space, there are perhaps better options (although I am rather fond of the Scribe). However, in the existing Kindle e-reader user space, the Scribe is simply the most versatile Kindle out there - like you said, it is not competing with remarkable, boox etc., it is competing with Kobo, and perhaps also other Kindles.

      Demographically, the Kindle audience is VASTLY different than the folks who are into devices from Boox, Supernote, or even Remarkable. When I post on Reddit in the latter forums, I get a lot of views, some upvotes, some comments -- my posts don't blow people away but they are well received. I've posted on the Kindle subreddit a few times now, including with this video, and at best I'm getting indifference and even a touch of hostility (to be fair to that forum, my content just doesn't fit in there, so it's not that they are bad people).
      It's fun to go into the Kindle forum sometimes and count the number of posts which are people showing off their Kindle in various cases and settings. Can you imagine that happening on the Boox subreddit!?! So that's another barrier for Amazon. Their product is aimed at one demographic, and it's hard for me to imagine them pivoting to focus on another, less lucrative, one. If they did, they would have to brand it in a way that made it clear that their new device was aimed at a different set of people.

    I'd almost expect them to start piecemeal selling services like, "oh you want layers on your notes, pay this additional dollar per month on your Prime subscription!" That might be too petty even for them, but if it happened, I wouldn't be surprised.
    It would be nice to get another 10 inch basic device in 300 ppi, though. Like an improved Meebook P10, or Boox Note Air 3(00).

      Isn't BMW doing something like that? I hadn't thought of that until you mentioned it, but now it seems like a completely plausible idea. Sigh.

      @@jeffreymoss Yeah, one of those car companies is trying to ding you subscriptions for things like heated seats and using your radio or something. Soon, we'll have to pay monthly to use our air conditioning and the ability to roll down our windows!

    the act of reading and writing is just so intertwined that it's just natural for a kindle scribe to be born. If Amazon can take a bigger market share by being a hybrid e-reader and notetaker, then it will do so. As journaling becomes more and more popular as a way to "disconnect" and be mindful, there is a very promising market for digital notetakers. It's not really fun to carry multiple notebooks with you wherever you go. I can't even imagine how valuable this device would have been to me as a student.

    For that lined notebook the lines seemed a bit big, is there an option to use a lined notebook with smaller (more lines) on one page?

      @jeffreymoss  6 месяцев назад

      Yes, they have a template with more lines, I see one with 32.

    100% agree, their hardware is good but often sold for very little... because the hardware is a means to an end, selling stuff.

    I wonder what the use for converting the handwriting? Better typing using a computer.

    • @jeffreymoss
      @jeffreymoss  5 месяцев назад

      I feel the same way. I do like being able to search on handwriting though and that's facilitated by the same feature. Both Boox and Supernote do that and I've found it useful in the past.

    Yup. Having your customers scribbling away and organizing their lives / being productive and studying or writing on their Amazon device is totally not what Amazon-the-Bookseller wants. The only way that they'll think to vastly improve the Scribe's functionality would be if Boox suddenly teamed up with a competitor and started selling hundreds of thousands of epubs! Or maybe if Ratta put 3D Surround sound speakers and Bluetooth on the A4X2 so that they could sell Taylor Swift albums!

    A great e-reader, but with their obsession of converting everything to their own format, and that by their _'send to email'_ function... little else. I for one am not impressed by its note taking abilities which is why I opted for Supernote. However, if all I wanted to do was read, you'd be *hard pressed to beat it* and as for the hardware, it leaves my much beloved Supernote in the dust... well, excluding Supernote's Heart of Metal pen that is! 😁

    • @jeffreymoss
      @jeffreymoss  10 месяцев назад

      I'm a huge fan of the Heart of Metal pen!

    • @karlmunford7000
      @karlmunford7000 10 месяцев назад

      @@jeffreymoss Me too... my wish would be that they'd put a _'bump-button'_ on the top I could click, or maybe bump against my chin to toggle between pen and eraser as I spend a little more lime than is convenient looking for the icons in the menu bar.
      I purchased the Lamy to circumvent this issue but apart from feeling like I was skating on ice when writing... spent more time trying to locate the *black eraser button on the black pen* than I had looking for the icons with my Heart of Metal, likewise when I purchased the Amazon Scribes premium pen, which though slightly better still suffered... whose eraser on the end of the pen is limited to a _'fine size'_ [on the Supernote] without a fine tip to directed it making it next to useless.
      So, I've stopped trying to circumvent this issue and resolved myself to _'icon hunting'_ with my Heart of Mental which while writing, feels fantastic.

    Ageee with you…. Amazon is too comfortable to be doing things that can’t make them more money. If the Scribe also enables users to shop on Amazon, then perhaps the story may be different. Right now, it’s just a big Kindle that users can take some notes.
