- South Africans went to the polls on 29th May - and the results were damning for the ruling African National Congress party, which has led the country since the end of apartheid 30 years ago. For the first time since 1994, its first election, the ANC failed to secure at least 50% of the vote (the threshold needed to form a government).
The drop in ANC support is seen as a verdict on its governance of the nation. Many Black South Africans accuse the government of not doing enough to dismantle apartheid-era socio-economic structures and injustices. Nothing exemplifies this better than the existence of Orania, a Whites-only town in the country's Northern Cape province.
The town has been a source of tension since its establishment in the early ‘90s during the last days of apartheid. The founders and the residents of the town claim its purpose is to preserve the culture and identity of the Afrikaner people, White South Africans of mostly Dutch, French and German descent.
However, many people think the town and its policy of not allowing non-White residents is nothing but a racist endeavour to maintain some vestiges of the apartheid system. The residents of the town insist that its existence is protected by Article 235 of the South African constitution, which guarantees self-determination. However, many have argued that the cited part of the constitution does not in fact permit people of a particular religious or cultural group to live in a secluded place away from other South Africans. In 2000, the Northern Cape High Court adjourned ‘sine die’ (without a further hearing date) after Orania’s proponents challenged attempts by the government to incorporate the town into the nearby municipal authority.
In 2019, Zamani Saul, the elected leader of the Northern Cape province, vowed to set up an inquiry to review the legality of Orania. His calls were backed by senior ANC official Panyaza Lesufi, who in 2020 stated that South Africa cannot move on from apartheid as long as places like Orania are allowed to exist.

I was giving him as an example but the fact is that it's a structural problem. Not as bad as elsewhere but still one of the major challenges the country has to deal with. All the best. I think jealousy is one of the biggest problems here,thirty years ago a country that was the power house of Africa was handed over to the ANC ,everything was functioning properly eg railways ,SAA ,municipalities ,hospitals education and many more institutes .Where are we now ,look at the condition of the roads etc.These few people have taken a piece of desert and are turning it into a paradise through hard work and determination.I am sure it has not been easy for them ,why has there not been a attempt by any other race group to stop depending on the government to help them survive, and also taken a step to help themselves and make something work properly.I guaranty you if it is taken over by anyone else it will maybe survive for three to five years and it will also be destroyed.Stop complaining and do something for yourselves.

Absolutely correct! I have only in the last 5 years become more familiar with South Africa. Not an expert but an informed person. It was AJ+ who turned me into the neo apartheid experience still in South Africa. It was during the water shortage crisis times in South Africa. I watched a report by a real journalist from AJ+. I forgot the name of the female journalist. But her report showed something I will never forget. A video footage of a teeline. Where on one side it was bare dirt as far as the eye could see, clustered with shanty shakes made from cobbled together things. No modern infrastructure anywhere. No running water, electricity, roads, or anything else. Directly on the other side of that thin treeline. There was a suburban neighborhood that would not be out of place in middle class America. Later on I found out that whites held 70+ percent of lands and a similar or better percentage of "businesses" , banking, and so on. Nevermind farm lands. And Julius Melema and his EFF party only confirmed my suspicions that Apartheid had not ended, but also added to my deepening understanding of the reality for indigenous South Africans. Very beautiful. Orania is a good example not only to the other peoples in South Africa, but to the other peoples in their world, to form their own communities, DO THEIR OWN WORK, form communities where people care about their neighbors and help each other.
Orania as it continues to grow and prosper can help others in South Africa, yes pay taxes and share electricity (sell) to neighbors and the national government.
Other racial and ethnic groups including various Black and colored peoples and tribes should be encouraged to study the success of Orania, and set up similar communities, smaller communities no larger than say 3,000.
The Mega city , slums of Cape Flats and Soweto are not good models, neither is downtown Johanasberg with now abandoned tall buildings with elevators that don't work because the national electrical company doesn't work because of ANC corruption

I was looking for this comment because his framing of "Africa was only black, Europe was only white" is not only ahistorical, but racist af. To your point, in order to justify a whites only town in South Africa he has to ignore the literal apartheid that has only ended on paper. I won't disperage his ancestery leading him to living there (that's for the people of South Africa to decide) but he has no right to carve out an exclusionary place for europeans in a country that has a very recent history of his people doing that very thing. If he's going to live in South Africa then he needs to live in South Africa, not some section of a land his people are still stealing from the South Africans.

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) - More than 200 protesters in South Africa have demonstrated at the Uganda High Commission against the anti-gay bill recently passed by Ugandan lawmakers.
The demonstration on Tuesday was led by South Africa’s leftist Economic Freedom Fighters opposition party, which urged Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni not to sign the bill into law.
LGBTQ activists also joined the march and called on the South African government to speak out against the bill as it threatens the freedoms and safety of the LGBTQ community in Uganda.
Homosexuality is outlawed in Uganda but the recent bill has introduced harsh punishment for several acts, including the death penalty and up to 20 years imprisonment.
Almost all lawmakers of the 389 who attended the parliamentary session voted in favor of the bill, but Museveni has the powers to veto the bill and not sign it into law.
