    Joe D! One of those rare finds who turned out to become a Legend. So happy the Detroit Pistons scouts and GM Jack McClosky did their homework in drafting him out of McNeese State at #18 in 1985. In four short years Joe was 1989 NBA Finals MVP.

    Now imagine if Michael Jordan did this in a Finals game. Scored 17 straight to help his team win and blocked a last second shot to ensure the victory and then went on to win the Finals MVP. Or what if he set a record for most points scored in a Finals quarter after he badly sprained an ankle. Idiots who think that the Pistons were only thugs who couldn't play basketball have no clue what they did to earn their 2 championships in the late 80's early 90's. They just don't understand how great that team was or the struggle they went through to get to that greatness. Thugs don't win championships, great teams do.

    • @artmeddaugh6669
      @artmeddaugh6669 2 года назад +1

      Exactly! I've been preaching this since the late 80's. All my Buddies (who weren't from Detroit) back then called them Thugs, Bullies, Cheaters, A-Holes, you name it. They were wishing this team failure in every playoff game. I probably stood and paced more than I sat while watching these playoff games. It was exhausting, but that turned into exhilaration in 89' and 90', and I was sure to remind them anytime I could that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and that my Bad Boys are a team like no other. Greatness comes in many forms, and those Pistons teams rose to the occasion time and time again after bitter defeats and failures, to achieve the title...BEST IN THE WORLD!! Bad Boys 4 Life!!

N jordan got the steal from Malone in 98 then hit the game winner after carrying his team offensively. Jesus the man has to do exactly this one specific thing now?🤣

    I know this is a video about Dumars, but the 1989 Lakers went 11-0 in the Western Conference Playoffs and didn't have Byron Scott in this series and lost Magic in game 2. The 1989 Lakers is probably the most forgotten underrated squad in NBA history. Detroit would have probably worn them out in a game 7 if the Lakers had a full squad.

      @iandouglass7135 5 лет назад

      He definitely had the ability in a big way, but I think he only ran two isolation plays in this entire clip. Joe was the real reason they traded Dantley, because Joe had ALL of the skills of a point guard, had great range on his shot, and made quick decisions. He didn't hold the ball and gum up the offense. Half of his shots here are the result of great ball movement to get away from the Lakers' trapping defense.

      I think Joe Dumars' performance in 1989 should be a testament to his own greatness, not a condemnation of Isiah's skills and impact.
      The 1989 Finals was open season for Pistons guards as a whole, not just Joe alone. Byron Scott was hurt and Magic wasn't sticking with those guys defensively even when healthy. That's why Joe, Isiah, and Vinnie (Johnson) averaged 66 points between them that series on 58.1 percent shooting.
      That series aside, the beauty of those Pistons teams was the ability for any guy in their nine-man rotation to step up when needed and for the others to cede the floor when the time was right. Earlier in his career, Isiah was in constant takeover mode, which is why you tend to see gaudier numbers. By '89, he'd found a nice middle ground, where he was always ready to step up and dominate when required, but he also knew how to feed a hot hand.
      In the 1990 Finals, it was Isiah's turn to takeover (akin to his 1988 run on the bad ankle). Against the Blazers, he averaged 27.6 points and 7 assists (54 percent shooting, 69 percent from three) in earning Finals MVP honors. On the contrary, he spent most of his career as the top dog of those Pistons teams. Others would have their moments (Dumars, Dantley, Tripucka, Laimbeer) but no one got it twisted - it was always Isiah at the top.
      Conclusion: Isiah Thomas & Joe Dumars are one of the greatest backcourt duos in NBA history.
