Hey Paul I was ErikTheRedd. Happy I actually got to play you in an event. I thought I got absolutely destroyed by your golgari midrange against dimir tempo so it was nice to hear you thought it felt like a closer match. 😊
Dimir midrange is always so scary to play against. Who knows what you could have in hand! It's pretty funny that one of the only opponents I played that was not mono-red was a person with Redd in their account name.
@@haumph Right? I noticed a sea of red when I played against people Friday and Saturday as well. When I saw you posted this video I was immediately like , "I get to see a pro player pick apart how bad my plays were, yay!" 😂
I was at the edge of my seat the whole time. Playing against mono red is scary, and seeing you win so consistently was so cathartic. One of the most nail biting magic videos ive seen because there's also more on the line than just playing plain standard or limited
The first and last time I played Paul Cheon, I was the one playing B/G midrange. I lost but it's at least a good memory haha. GP Seattle '05 Extended format
You missed lethal by not attacking with the 2nd Archfiend and using cut down on the 1/1 in eventual response to any of their spell, their only out would have been triple monstrous rage - at 44:20
Ayyyyyy! Congrats on tak"in it to the house! Great to see a limited player making it out in the real world. (It's scary out there) I want to play in more of the Champs and other tournaments, but it's mostly standard and I only have a chance in the less busted limited environment. I really wish they had more limited events. Or, maybe two tracks to get to day two and then have to play one of each to win it all. Either way, really pulling for you, Paul. you have helped me become a less terrible player, Thanks.
This is exactly the reason why i stopped playing standard. It's just mono red everywhere, just straight forward beats, no creativity... Like sure it's easy to build specifically against mono red but it gets so boring just having to play the same game every time. That's what i love about draft, everyone starts with an equal playing field and you have to build creatively to make things work, the matches never feel the same ! Well played though ! Congrats on the day 2 !
First match game two is why i tend to not board out all of my copies of llanowar elves when i play this deck. It just seems to always end up messing up my curve. Oh and i also have been getting better mileage out of deadly cover up in the sideboard instead of gix's command
I think it was super funny hearing your takes on Mono red as someone dipping back into Standard. Mono Red is crazy good. It's got lots of options oddly, too.
Was really cool to see how the Llanowar Elves helped the curve keep up with a ton of these aggro decks. It seems like they either have to waste resources on the Elves or just let you catch up w/ ramp. Neither of which is ideal for these aggro decks. Glissa as well is so good in that matchup. Golgari Midrange doesn't always look like the most potent deck but the card quality just wins out sometimes.
Hey Paul! I was GrevenIlVec, the second person you played. Would you mind if I made a mash up of our perspectives for a video? I think it’d be fun. Good game and congrats on going the whole way!
Damn Paul, you have the same feelings about mono red as me. Because of them I often play azorius enchantments in standard, since they are very weak against sheltered by ghosts. But it feels bad to be forced to always play this archetype because of all of those braindead mono red players.
At 44, play cut down first to see if he has monstrous rage? if not, swing for lethal, if yes it's just a +1+1 enchantment and you can still attack with one.
God damn I love scavenging ooze. Idk why, there's just something about it that makes it my favorite card. It's just so like... Good. Ofc, nowadays its way too fast to play little oozy boy regularly, but still.
I also played mono red. My sideboard teched to beat the mirror, anticapating the field being flooded with it. Went 4-3, didnt play a single other red deck. Glad to see my call was correct with the million red decks from this vid. Sad i didnt play them. My vid is posted to my Mtg channel.
Hey Paul, I saw alot of plays where you don’t take advantage of the drain and gain of unholy annex vs mono red. Is that just a tempo decision? Edit: didn’t watch enough games nvmd
I don’t really know much about side boarding, but is Archfiend good against mono red? Big blocker early seems good, but if you are blocking with it then you lose to its ability. Just wondering the idea behind keeping it in
Yes mono red is the most infuriating experience ever. You either play against mono red and give up equity everywhere else or vise versa. Mid range G/B is kinda middle road though
You too can *BUY* that mono red deck in the store. Because wizards says mono red is stupid and a problem in every format but limited and historic in their arena direct, then said "F it, PUT IT IN THE BUYABLE DECKS, $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!!!!!"
At 43:55 why not play the Cut Down BEFORE attacks? Obviously going for the double Archfiend attack first is scary because if the Cut Down doesn't work, you're fucked, but if you cast it before attacks and then they save their creature with Monstrous Rage then at least that's one less monstrous rage they have to cast on your turn and you can try to play safer with blockers, if not they're dead. But also yes, playing against Mono-Red IS just the most tilting experience ever 😂 Great games nonetheless!
Depends on the build of mono-red. The super spell heavy version with a ton of pump spells / leyline of resonance, I agree. Not against the quinn tonole version.
@haumph there are 15 hits in the main plus 15 hits in the sideboard.. taking a shock and getting to look at their hand turn 1 is better than a ton of cards in your deck.. red has no value engine and requires at least 4 spells to kill you. Every 1 for 1 is in your favor. Even if its just taking a shock with duress. The fact that its a 1 mana card makes it better than about half of your deck. When you cast duress turn 1, reds winrate goes down by a huge margin. Its also one of your best cards against boros. Your cards are better than theirs. The longer the game goes the better. Duress slows the pace of the game down. Its just almost always one of your best cards against any form of red aggro. Also deals with urabrask forge which is their best way to beat heavy removal decks like yours.
Mono red is just such a caveman, brain dead meta. I like magic because it causes you to think and makes plays. Mono red is just, play creature, make creature big. Attack all😂. Sooooooo boring. I liked the golgari you played though
@@haumph But I seem to face them much less than most (Constructed) creators out there, so I understand there might be an element of fatigue in play that I don't have on my end. I guess they're more rampant in Mythic? Who knows.

Makes a 5 mana 6/6.
"I guess the way that you can look at this is it's just 5 mana make a 6/6."
The S-tier pro commentary I came for.
Thanks for watching
"channeling their inner Reid Duke" 🤣 Never heard that before but it is so fitting.
This is a great video, helped me a lot and so fun to watch the nail-biting suspense of the mono-red vs. golgari midrange
Congrats Paul! Dominating both limited and constructed. Way to go!!! Looking forward to see your Day2 vid. Good luck!
Thanks and Day 2 video coming tomorrow!

Feel exactly the same.
yeah it was very scary to play against. always one good burn spell or pump spell away from dying it seems
The first and last time I played Paul Cheon, I was the one playing B/G midrange. I lost but it's at least a good memory haha. GP Seattle '05 Extended format
That was a long time ago!
Good to see you playing competitively. Really enjoyed the vid! Looking forward to watching day 2

The sideboard commentary was REALLY helpful, thanks, man! Keep it up
No problem!
Really nice seeing you playing also this format. Bravo!
Hey, thanks!
Welcome to constructed suffering Paul! Where everything is mice.

It was nice to see you playing traditional standard, I hope you can repeat it sometime.
nah standard sucks
glad you enjoyed!
Great vid, would love to see more standard content down the line!
Noted!
I think it was super funny hearing your takes on Mono red as someone dipping back into Standard. Mono Red is crazy good. It's got lots of options oddly, too.
I see Paul Cheon new video and I click play whatever format is being played! Keep up the great content!
Glad you watch it all!
Just hold on a second.. that game had me rolling. Bro your the goat.
Appreciate it!

Yeah Llanowar Elves too strong!
Listening to you vent about mono red was cathartic
Wow you navigated those red matchups beautifully. Hard games even with a slight edge.
I don't think I played them perfectly but just well enough to get some wins!
Damn bro. No prep?! What a 💪! GG’s Paul! Keep the entertainment going!
Will try my best!
44:01 could have gone for lethal here with cut down since act of treason is your main way to lose
i am aware
Dude! This was awesome! Congrats 😎👍
Thanks a ton!
Great stuff mr Cheon, GGS
GGs!
1:18:04 does scavenging ooze not work great against the enduring creatures? Full control - eat it as it goes to the graveyard before it returns?
It does work
I believe in singleton Bronco I just know he's going to handle his business
sure will!
Hey Paul! I was GrevenIlVec, the second person you played. Would you mind if I made a mash up of our perspectives for a video? I think it’d be fun. Good game and congrats on going the whole way!
Go for it!
9:54 Any consideration given to Anoint vs. the Enduring Innocence here to exile it and invite a chump at the cost of giving up the +1/+1 counters?
Playing against mono-red/red aggro IS stressful. You always feel like you are on the edge of losing.
totally agreed!
Oh yes, But is a one of the best matchups you can get
Damn Paul, you have the same feelings about mono red as me. Because of them I often play azorius enchantments in standard, since they are very weak against sheltered by ghosts. But it feels bad to be forced to always play this archetype because of all of those braindead mono red players.
Standard has become the mono-red gauntlet
Sure seems that way. Glad I brought golgari midrange over dimir midrange!
At 44, play cut down first to see if he has monstrous rage? if not, swing for lethal, if yes it's just a +1+1 enchantment and you can still attack with one.
good job Paul great games :) good luck on day 2 :) and really want to see you play at world champs :))
Hah that would be awesome. Thanks!
Well played!
TY!
44:09 why not swing with both demons, then play frillback to gain 4 life for some padding and cut down the 1/1 mouse to win the game?
God damn I love scavenging ooze. Idk why, there's just something about it that makes it my favorite card. It's just so like... Good.

Paul just fucking farming mono red, it's beautiful

GGGGGGGGGG dude!!! only 1 loss is unreal!!! how did day 2 go? it was today no?
Video coming out tomorrow!

not a "gruul-ing" weekend, a golgari-ing weekend
that's a stretch but I'll allow it

My guess is that a lot of the top 250 for Constructed just play Best of One. Hence all the Red?
Well done!!
Thank you!
How many "qualify" was that in the opening?
sounds like you kept count
Congrats !! I qualified to the event with merfolks so I had to bring them again, only 3-3 but I am happy with my run. Will be rooting for you at day 2
Much appreciated.
Paul is so good
:D

Yeah that was a mistake. One of many that I likely made as I played almost 0 games to prepare for this. Happy with the result though!
Duress is one of your best cards against mono red you should be playing all copies

I qualified for my second ever time this week only to find out it was standard 😢 I went 0-3
oof :(
Today Paul learned how bad standard is right now
Aggro aggro aggro aggro, (real deck with real magic cards), aggro aggro...
Yeah that’s more or less how the day went haha
You had one game where you could’ve won. The one where you got tilted after.
ok
